Acrocanthosaurus | The King of Early Cretaceous North America

  • When you think, North America and giant carnivores, the T. rex is almost certainly going to be the first dinosaur that comes to mind. However, millions of years before the legend itself, another theropod was ruling North America, and it wasn’t even a Tyrannosaur! It was the Acrocanthosaurus. It was an apex predator that dominated the lands and had a knack for going after armored Ankylosaurs and even massive sauropods, taking on the likes of Astrodon and possibly the Sauroposeidon .

Acrocanthosaurus is such a formidable predator. I feel like the only reason why it isn't more popular is because the name doesn't role off the tongue as well as T.Rex, Giga, and Spinosaurus.

Giga and Spino were only popular because they competed for largest carnivor. Otherwise they would have remained in the same spot many others compared to T Rex. But I do agree this Dino is cool. I seen one at a museum once. It was the star attraction at that museum. I also have a decent replica in my dino collection set of replicas.

@Planet Dee There seems to be a misconception that the Giga was a competitor in size with the T.Rex. The Giga was long and narrow, making it light weight. The Giga's skeleton, including the skull, is less robust than T.Rex. Everything we know about T.Rex suggests it killed anything in its path. To include Rivals. The Giga most likely hunted in groups and was not nearly as aggressive. Both predators are very close in length. The Giga has been measured at 43 ft long while the Tyrannosaurus measured in at 40.5 ft. It's hard to imagine such a robust creature like T.Rex weighing less.

@@PyroBlonde7777 True. Most information goes hand and hand with the idea T Rex was larger as far as weight goes. In addition, as much as I love JP T-Rex, it was slim with no gut. Now modern interpretation shows it with a huge belly which makes sense and increases his mass. Also making him much more vulnerable to his rival, the triceratops.

@@kyachdistent1301 Yes because the T rex is to blame for it's own extinction and it had nothing to do with unlucky timing of a huge extinction event including a giant ass meteor hitting the earth.. How is T rex supposed to deal with that exactly? It's not being inferior that got it killed. It's bad luck. Also Humans have yet to make it to 1 million years and we seem well on our way to be unable to stop our own extinction as well. The T rex had some excuses, things happening outside their power. Meanwhile we are responsible for starting up the very things that will likely kill us unless we get our act together real real quick. T-Rex was fine. I am not saying better or worse then other dinosaurs because I am facinated by all of them. But the attitude around a dino being more or less great depending on how long they managed to live is dumb. T-Rex could very well still be around if it where not for certain events outside of it's control.

I think, this is exactly why Acrocanthosaurus went extinct. Prey items are getting incredibly more dangerous as opposed to just being a simple hadrosaurus where all you need was to chase and bite it's neck. You got new ankylosaurid which had thicker armor and heavier clubbing tail. Ceratopsid that literally grow horns up to 1.5 meters. Sauropods that were getting rarer also much more aggressive and protective on their offspring. Mid-late to late cretaceous produce enough "Alien" like dinosaur that carcharodontosaurid like Acrocanthosaurus were not built against.
You need a new apex predator that can handle these new dangerous prey items, a Theropod that had the power to break ceratopsid horns and crush the armor of Ankylosaurid. A new predator that can survive a full blow of ankylosaurid tail on it's face. A new Predator that can survive an injury of being impaled by a Ceratopsid horn. T-rex had everything evolution wants.
Evolution determines the next top predator and it happens that T-Rex had everything it fits for the new, more violent environment.
Edit : intriguing how environment gives more difficult prey items and then they also created T-Rex as a solution to it, then selectively removed carcharodontosaurid in the process. It's just a better designed killer for a new era with much fitting tool.

    • @rileyernst9086
      @rileyernst9086 ปีที่แล้ว +5

You are forgetting a little thing called the *CENOMANIAN-TUROIAN MASS EXTINCTION.* where all the carnosaurian predators went extinct, (and meso predators like tyrannosaurids, megaraptora s and abelisaurs globally moved into their niches) along with the rebbahisaurids sauropods and some other groups. It is also only after this event that you get those herbivores you speak of. And you don't really get them outside Asia and America. Also acrocanthosaurus shared its habitat with big and robust and armed iguanadonts. You are also forgetting that Tyrannosaurus only is one of many tyrannosaur of many a d most, like Lythronax, albertasaurus, gorgosauris, daspletetosaurus, and even the bigger eastern appilachisaurus were all SMALLER and lighter than Acrocanthosaurus, and they survived in enviroments filled with ankylosaurs ceratopsians and big chonky hadrosaurs.
So yeah i do not think acrocanthosaurus would struggle if it were suddenly thrust into the hell creek formation in place of tyrannosaurus. Any time before the evolution of tyrannosaurus (tarbosaurus and Zuchengtyrannus as well)itself acrocanthosaurus would easily be the most dominant predator on the continent. Probably the world at that stage as abelisaurs were never very impressive and the only comparable giant megaraptoran we have, maip, is also at the end of the Maastrichian. We don't have evidence in the cenomanian for acrocanthosaurus anyway. That is why i said Siats. Acro seems to have been in the Aptian and Albian, so it was still present for a good 20 million years, possibly more but we don't have good evidence for earlier asside from trackways.
Siats is a bit smaller and lighter than acro, probably more allosaurian but everything i said applies still to Siats. Its a heavier predator than Appilachasaurus- the largest Campainian
      Tyrannosaurid.
You're basically just focusing on the last few million years of Tyrannosaur evolution when they got huge. These animals are not typical of rhe family. They were, as therepod families go in size, pretty mediocre before the latest eras of the Maastrichtian. And alas they died before their time.

I saw a skeletal reconstruction of one of these next to a Trex in a museum in Texas and it was formidable, terrifying even. Unlike trex, this animal had slicing teeth and massive claws attached to robust powerful arms.
This animal would grab large, even massive prey with it's powerful claws, put it's massive weight and power on to the prey, while it's jaws sliced through flesh like butter. It's teeth were serrated, reminds me of great white shark teeth, it would slive through flesh very easily.
Carcaradontosaurus usually had these flesh slicing teeth, maybe this is what triggered large animals too big to run fast to evolve armored skin. Early tyranosaurids also had slicing teeth but as armored dinosaurs proliferated, tyranosaurids evolved more robust teeth and more powerful jaws, they also gave up on claws. An interesting example of arms race in nature between predator and prey.

      - it gets included in like every dinosaur media
But tbh, you have a point.
Not only does the name sound cool, but it is also very easy to pronounce.
And it also shorter version of it's name (T rex) which most dinosaurs don't have.
Usually dinosaurs with easier to pronounce and "cooler" names are the ones who are more popular than similar dinosaurs:
      Stegosaurus > Tuojiangosaurus
      Tyrannosaurus > Acrocanthosaurus
      Spinosaurus > Oxalaia
Velociraptor > Deinonychus (tbh I think Deinonychus sounds cooler but most people seem to disagree)
      Argentinosaurus > Dreadnoughtus

I think to be Frank, this is exactly how and why Acrocanthosaurus went extinct.

    • @islamicschoolofmemestudies
      @islamicschoolofmemestudies ปีที่แล้ว

@tossupeaterWhich is why, i already said. T-rex is the answer of what Nature has been offering. Nature offered Armored and Horned herbivore? There's a predator that's going to be created by nature itself to answer that challenge.
This is textbook example of survival of the fittest. Not to be taken as offence.

My thoughts on the acro' predatory ecology is this I think the arms may have been more important for predation when the creature is younger. A regular avain grabbing and pulling with the head will draw tissue over the recurved and serrated teeth cause devistating cuts to muscle and bone like a shark or kommodo dragon bite. I think hunting adult sauropods, particularly the isolated sick and injured in favorable terrrain or at night would have been done. And I think that thise jaws and teeth could effectively immbolise even large animals by damage to muscle anf ligiments.

Hot take: I am not the biggest fan of Julian Johnson-Mortimers animations. The models are nice, sometimes a little too much on the Jurassic Park side, and he really hits the nail on the head when it comes to putting the animals into the real footage environment, just look at the scene at 0:15, the lighting is spot on. However, the movement is terrible most of the time, especially with the carnivores. They look super cumbersome, like they can hardly run, and waddle from side to side, while it's actually suggested that theropods would place their feet in front of each other right under their body.
