As a kid I used to watch natural disaster videos and this one always stood out to me. This video really put into perspective how disastrous and enormous this event was.
It was terrifying.
I was in UK, miles away, but it made me feel physically sick, the shock of it, seeing how many people were just wiped out.
A huge force of Nature.
This video had the most detailed explanation of the rupture zone, how the quake occurred, and about how water levels in the Indian Ocean (and therefore the world) were permanently altered.

It's still shocking that most of the people living in the danger zone had no idea that when the water goes out to sea it's coming back with force. Remember watching people running out and grabbing fish unaware of what was happening.
My parents had us watch Nat Geo every weekend when I was a kid, we learned all about natural disasters including tsunamis when I was quite young. I just figured everyone had. But obviously not.

I was in sixth grade when this happened. I was too young to understand much less care about the event from my comfy home in Nashville. Now that I'm older and revisiting the event...It's stuck in my head and can't believe such a thing happened in my lifetime. I hope all the areas effected have rebuilt strong and the families of those lost have found peace 18 years later.

Here in Great Britain, December 26 is a bank holiday called Boxing Day. So, we call it the Boxing Day tsunami. I remember watching it surrounded by my family and thanking heaven for them, whilst across the other side of the world 230,000+ people lost theirs. We always raise our glasses to them on Boxing Day. This video is superb. It’s detailed and scientific and your clear voice and diction is perfect. Thank you.🙏

There’s no evidence of the whole of the San Andreas going at the same time, much less the San Andreas (strike Slip) and the Cascadia (subduction) zone going at the same time. They are two completely different types of faults.

I lived in Seoul Korea and had planned to go to patong beach in Thailand. We weren’t able to go because there were no seats on the airplane. We know now God was definitely looking out.

Did God favor you and condemn them to die? People miss flights all of the time & it’s extremely common for someone making a last minute decision only to find the flight they want sold out as in your case. One could just as easily say you were saved by your poor planning, or your spontaneity. I’m offering a perspective not judgment.

Um hi. There were actually 5 earthquakes with a magnitude of 9 or higher. In 1952 near Kamchatka, in 1960 at Chile, the 1964 Alaska earthquake, the 2004 Asia earthquake and then the 2011 Tohuko earthquake. Just wanted to let you know.
Even here in Luderitz, Namibia we saw 2aves up to a meter high. The higher waves were in the bay next to our town. Out on the other side of the peninsula on the other side of the bay, you wouldn't have noticed it that much. As soon as it wrapped around the peninsula and went into the bay that's when it greatly gained hight. Firstly parts of the bay near the entrance are up to 70 meters deep. Secondly the bay is long and narrow, some 10 kilometers long and 3 kilometers wide. At the lower end of the bay is a 2 kilometer long flat pan. There the wave was just over a meter high and crossed the entire pan, and went over the road on the other end and continued beyond the road for about 100 meters.
It should have been stated, 'In recorded history', rather than 'in history'.
I was in Grade school when the Alaskan quake hit .News reports showed the Power of mother nature.I was flabbergasted and always remember that event when I hear of other magnified calamities.. Mother Earth will have it's Say. And have it's WAY.
Seventeen years leter, and there are moments when noises associated with what I experienced that day scares me.
A day before, I had a dream, in which I saw the Triton Hotel, where we stayed destroyed by a natural catastrophe. Thanks my persistance to see that abundant vegetation, we cancelled the trip to Galle.
Otherwise ,who knows what would have happened to the three of us, have visited the turtle hatchery.
We were welcomed for two days in a temple in Urugasmanhandiya. It had a capacity for 60 persons and hosted more than 2.500 people, all from diferent places near the coast.
Five days later, I returned with a lot of health, assistancce, distributing the medicines agains malaria and other diseases.
Sometime I wonder, if the german, lady who was im the same hotel, as us could have been reunited with her lost daughter.
Every year, I place an altar in their memory and light colorered candles .
May all those who died in this tragic event rest in peace.

Silent tsunamis studies by Prof Imamura try to create explanation for abnormally large tsunamis. Its a interesting watch to see the studies he is doing to show the impact these combines events can have. This is for sure one of the first widely documented events, but the world defiantly is familiar with destruction. There is plenty of geological evidence that this is avg in comparison of what can occur. Same can be said with volcanoes, we have not seen what is possible. If we do, it could be world ending.

I've often wondered if it's possible for people to use explosives to blow up the tectonic plates when they get stuck. Get every one evacuated first then let rip.

Why do I remember some pictures shown in this video and why do I think that I died in 2004 in aceh indonesia and I was reborn in Srilanka 2004 during the tsunami I was in a hospital and then I moved to japan and again died on March 11 and again took rebirth on July 5 again now I am 13 years old.

The oceans are interconnected. The tsunami caused by the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa in Indonesia (between Sumatra and Java) was detected on tide gauges in the UK about two days later; it was very small by the time it reached there. There are strange things that a tsunami can do in response to the local contours of the sea bottom. I have met people who experienced the 2004 tsunami in India and the people in Ernakulam on the west coast had worse damage than those in Chennai on the east coast.
Not sure how the waves from this reached the arctic (north of Canada), Mexico (you’re blocked by Indonesia and Africa), I could maybe see Chile, but the you still have the issue of Indonesia. Maybe check your geography? Otherwise great video!!

You're wrong. The video talks about the victims of the earthquake, not the tsunami that subsequently killed 180K people in Indonesia. But our other videos tell about it. This video is about what preceded the tsunami. So, as has been said, the earthquake itself killed "only" hundreds of people. Instead of attacking, listen carefully next time. We have studied this disaster really well, you don't have to worry.

Incredible miss-information visually.. most video is from Hollywood movies.. very little if any of it, is of the actual tsunami ... The key indicator is the "breaking waves" .... there were no breaking waves reaching the shore of Sri Lanka, or India ... or anywhere else for that matter caused by this significant underwater tectonic subduction and shift... But, you did get 160 thousand views .. nice work! ... too bad you don't have any video of the actual tsunami... but then, you don't really have to.. do you... :-)
