  • The Indian Ocean Tsunami was one of the worst national disasters ever in recorded history. What made this so deadly? Was it the disaster itself, or the response to it in the immediate aftermath?

    I left the Andeman island almost exactly an year before the Tsunami hit the island. When i first left, i coincidentally met my childhood friend, and his parents where we next shifted, about 9 months later they moved from the mainland to the Andeman islands. His mom was my dad's childhood friend. On one destined day, we got a call early in the morning, informing us about the tsunami. My friend explained it tye following.
    " the water came rushing in and before we realized half of our building was underwater, somehow we managed to get on the roof, soon realizing it wouldn't be enough as another wave came in and washed us off the roof, the next time i remember was me wedged between a tree trunk with mother holding on to a nearby tree, all i remember her saying was, hold on, don't let go....A wave came, and she was gone"
    My friend was left with injuries all over his body because of the debris, however his waistewas particularly in a bad shape because of being sucked and stuck between a tree branch. My friend watched his mother for the last time that day, and sadly, her body was never found as well.

      @JFrazer4303 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It was shown that even a low wall holds the first surge back giving many minutes for people to get out of streets that will be instantly impassable once the water starts.
      Now people just need to use those minutes to run not dawdle. That's what they're teaching.
      They also have excellent warning systems as well as their "Kaiju walls".

    As the video points out, there were simply no advanced warning systems in place in 2004. Also, many people near the epicenter of the 9.2M megathrust earthquake felt strong shaking for several minutes but didn't have a clue that the earthquake would trigger destructive and deadly tsunami waves. There are videos of people seeing the strange sight of the sea receding ahead of the first wave who curiously went to investigate and thus stood no chance of survival as it bore down upon them.
    In New Zealand we lie on the major plate boundary between the Indo-Australian and Pacific plates with a subduction zone beginning to the east of the upper south island that stretches all the way to Tonga. Recently along this fault line there was a magnitude 8.1 megathrust earthquake that ruptured near the Kermadec Islands that didn't thankfully produce devastating tsunami waves. Our Civil Defence agency occasionally plays TV ads telling us if an earthquake feels long or strong it's time to get to higher ground.
    What is quite common in the country I am from and still live in is the amount of complacency that is prevalent. Occasionally when news articles are released about the risk of major earthquakes in this country there is always that element of people who call it "scaremongering" as it's "not likely to happen in our lifetimes". These kind of people would no doubt whinge about not being educated enough if a major earthquake does strike our country. Just over 10 years ago a 6.3M earthquake devastated the city of Christchurch and killed 185 people, so it stands out as a clear example to not take earthquakes lightly.
    Even in Japan in 2011 with that megathrust earthquake it still managed to claim almost 16K lives and Japan being a very seismically active country had pretty decent warning systems in place.

    • @meglukes
      @meglukes ปีที่แล้ว +9

      As someone who lives very far from a tectonically active area, it’s hard to imagine being near the ocean, feeling an intense quake, and being like “eh, whatever, might as well take a leisurely stroll and look for damage or something instead of getting to higher ground.”

    • @shacktime
      @shacktime ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Had the nations that love to treat these “exotic” locales as their cheap tourist destinations helped deploy early warning systems the death toll would have been MUCH lower. Heaps of vacationing Europeans were killed in this catastrophe. Selfishness invariably makes victims of everyone.

    • @CYMotorsport
      @CYMotorsport ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is not true. Island of Java had specially designed systems to provide advanced warnings. But as you can read in an interview in Nature, Nanang Puspito outlined the lack of proper phone connection which barred them from alerting Jakarta the necessary information to take action. Jakarta had knowledge of the earthquake. But even if they could, the most advanced systems like in the Pacific Ocean first alerted Thailand and Indonesia no serious threat was looming. It took an hour to correct that. By them, the tip of Sumatra wouldn’t have truly had time regardless.
      And They also had other systems but they just were inadequate. Thailand and Indonesia are on the warning alert system. This network has incredibly accurate scientific systems to measure seismic activity. The Indian Ocean does not have that infrastructure however yes each country does have devices in place to measure seismic activity. But when inadequate, it makes it very difficult to make accurate predictions in a timely way.
      Also none of those videos you reference are from the area of Aceh which was the land site closest of the epicenter. Those videos exist but they are relevant bc this would have been first instance in this specific tsunami. Meaning, the retreat was an estimated hundreds of meters. You are reading that correctly. I’d like to think I’d react correctly but that’s literally unbelievable. Biblical even. It’s one thing if a tell tale sign presents itself. But hundreds of meters of retreating ocean? That would be like being in a monumentally large thunderstorm then immediately on a dime it get calm and clear. I’m from Oklahoma so Im very familiar with the signs as the plains get twisters regularly. I know it’s possible for weather to calm just before given tornadoes almost always atleast in the plains occur on the leading edges of the fronts. So it would make sense as the system curls to get brief reprieve and thenUnimaginable devastation. The more calm, the bigger the edge, the bigger the tornadoes. But if it’s a huge storm and it happens THAT fast, I might not think this is dangerous bc how could that Happen in that sequence? Much like it’s highly unusual for water to reheat hundreds of meters. But this wss also one of the largest quakes every recorded. It’s important to capture the nuance of the situation. They were just idiots. This was impossibly unique. And honestly for them given the water retreat, they actually couldn’t escape regardless unfortunately

      I had a vivid tsunami dream once that is up there as the most terrifying nightmares I’ve ever had. I was swimming with my sister in a beachside hotel pool, and I noticed the waves receded way too far. I shouted at my sister, and we got out and began walking back toward the hotel. My mom started shouting at us from the balcony to get to higher ground quickly, and before we could leave the pool plaza and enter the building, water was visibly rushing forward. We ended up being pinned to the wall by water, and my sister was able to begin climbing balconies. I’ve always been shorter and weaker and I scrambled for a while but was able to get up eventually. Watching the people get stuck in debris and screaming was to most difficult part. I remember wondering where my dad went, and if mom was okay, and it was just a horrific nightmare. Couldn’t sleep after that one and had to call my parents just to check in.
      I can’t imagine the lasting scars of those who have actually lived through or lost someone to a tsunami. My heart goes out to them.

    The waves that day were bigger than usual which was enjoyable. My Dad now retired then worked at the Kenya Ports Authority.
    I just remember my elder sister who wasn't swimming yelling at us to get out of the water. We did and about an hour later beach officials were asking people to leave the water. If you don't like swimming in the ocean because you are scared or can't swim then cool, but theres nothing wrong with swimming in ocean water, periodic exposure to (non contaminated) salt water is not bad for your skin. @@sigisoltau6073 it is because there are so many chains of islands that can break the waves before it reaches the coastal areas.
      The tsunami's destruction had the farthest reach at Piring Beach, Sibolga, and Nias, for the west coast region. Both locations are on North Sumatera Province. At Nias and Sibolga it varies between 1-3 meters.
      Coming south to the West Sumatera Province, there is another archipelago, Mentawai, which helps breaking waves from Indian Ocean. And any waves from Sibolga direction had weakened since there is a shallow water.
      Based on simulation, there should be many tsunami waves on Mentawai and West Sumatera coastal areas. Nevertheless, the height was low enough to cause massive destruction.

I was lucky because at that time I lived in the mountains, 500 kilometers from the most affected scene, but the earthquake shaking was just as strong. Dead bodies everywhere, lost families and friends, the sights of what used to be where a town or village stood but after that, it was leveled to the ground. Thankfully in Hawaii we are right in the middle and quite a distance away from tsunamis… what the idiots in the other response to your comment are missing is that Hawaii is one big chain of volcanoes and some still active and that’s a risk as an under water eruption or landslide is plenty enough to cause damage. Thankfully those are rare but the people are well informed and the warning systems quite effective. Like more recently during the NZ earthquake and Tonga eruption… thankfully I was actually taking a natural disaster course during that time so learned a lot about it as it happens since well we covered it in class in real time. One thing people underestimate is in both cases of tsunami warnings we had although we didn’t get hit it had a significant affect on the tides and currents (our lecturer showed us a normal tide gage compared to how it was that day and oh boy was it a massive difference). What that means is stronger currents and ocean conditions than usual and Hawaii already being a very dangerous place , it made it way worse. So if you were a clueless tourist swimming in the wrong spot that usually is fine you could get caught in a rip and end up off shore…

      the closer you are to the land, the deadlier it is. There's a story in Indonesia how a group of fishermen sailing off to the sea. They felt the sea was hauntingly silent, then a shake- one big wave that left them in bewilderment. A few hours later when they returned, they were greeted with the sight of their destroyed homeland. Can you imagine saying goodbye to your family for your job, when you were about to leave everything was so lively, but when you return you were left with nothing else.

    what I'm curious about is how copacetic the infrastructure of high-risk areas are to quick, universal evacuation, and how that can be improved. After all, there's little value in an early warning system, if everyone just ends up in a traffic jam together while still in the danger zone.

    • @BlueCyann
      @BlueCyann ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. Unfortunately I don't think any warning system could have done much for Banda Aceh. Too many people, too close, too flat. Almost nobody could have gotten anywhere helpful in the maximum of about 10 minutes they might have had to do something.

    Another factor was the lack of awareness from the public in these places… meaning even once people were warned many either did not take it seriously or did not know what to do and what not to do… for example seeing tides retreat does not mean it’s a good time to go shell picking on the exposed sea floor… it’s a sign that you must pick up your legs and run faster than you’ve ever ran in your life towards high ground. Not that long ago Tonga was hit by an underwater eruption and a tsunami absolutely ravaged them… although infrastructure damage was intense, there were very few casualties considering the violence of the tsunami and the proximity of the islands… that is attributed to the fact that these people are constantly well aware of the risks and were well prepared to react quickly and get themselves to safety. Since 2004 that’s has changed a lot since countries that are not used to getting hit understand they still might get hit and people tend to be better prepared now a days… added to the fact that information can circulate quickly it’s a game changer. I lived in hawaii during the Tonga eruption and the earthquake in NZ in the last few years, we almost immediately got a notification on our phone that tsunami warnings were in affect and even though we had a slight chance of a significant hit considering the distance, we were still warned to be ready to head to higher ground and stay clear from the beach…

The # 2 most violent earthquake in history, south of Banda Ace the waves were 38 to 40 nts high, shame nobody could share a video with us because Indonesia is very poor and they didn’t have too many video cameras as they did in Thailand in 2004, or Japan in 2011, it was a monster Tsunami caused by a monster Uber thrust in a 9.3 earthquake.

    actually in 2004 i was in India (even now) we decided to go to church near sea on Christmas day but we thought we can go tomorrow morning so we enjoyed the Christmas day and headed to town and we reached there after 10 hours to see police saying restricted area and saw people screaming and we even saw some bodies. we thought it was some bomb blast in church and we asked the police abd he said big waves hit the city and we even didnt knew the name of it and we were sent to a camp nearby because we were forced to. after reaching we saw people with sadness and fear in their faces so we came and sat by the radio and it started to say " in india 18,000 people died of a huge wave, mostly in our state and we were scared. and after we decided to stay there because we had some of our realtives there. and some one in the radio its a tsunami and we were confused what is that. after some time some people asked can you rescue people to my family and only men and we refused and we were scared that what happens if other wave come but some explained if you were in sea youre safe and only in the coast its a problem and after a long bargain we accepted to join them we headed to sea and we could only see a lighthouse, a mosque and the church and we going inwards to sea we were headed to island but find none and we found that itd underwater so we had some skilled in our boat so they dived inside to see the remains and they came back and there werr full of bodies which sunken and eated by the fishes and one of divers got injured in leg so we had move immediately. and heard that its origin was from indonesia nad all of its detail. after 3 days we were sent with the missing relatilves and we weee very thankful for god and very guilt for the people who died.

    Actually, the first tsunami warning system in the Pacific started after the disaster of 1946 when a strong tsunami hit the Hawaiian Islands unexpectedly. The first warning from this system occurred in 1948. This was based purely on seismographs detecting earthquakes in locations where a tsunami could theoretically be generated; there were no ocean sensors for decades after that.
