  • Frank Milne recorded this medley of four popular songs on roll #01119 in December 1938. The pieces are: "So Help Me," by Jimmy Van Heusen with lyrics by Eddie De Lange, "At Long Last, Love," by Cole Porter, "Heart and Soul," by Hoagy Carmichael, and a song by Frank Milne himself titled "Whisper a Lovely Melody," for which no lyrics are now known. Milne was one of Aeolian's most prolific artists for popular music, particularly after the depression and competition from the invention of the radio led to the merger of Aeolian and Ampico, amid the woes of the piano industry. The piano is a newly-restored 6'6" Steinway Model OR in a burl walnut artcase. The piano and player were completely restored and rebuilt in early 2012 for the instrument's owner near Washington DC. See www.historicpianos.com for more information on this instrument and other reproducing pianos.

I just listened to the same roll at home. I enjoyed "whisper a lovely melody" so much I thought I'd Google it. It's a pity more isn't known about this song.

Our high school had a Steinway Duo Art grand piano ... with the Duo Art guts ripped out of it. It always made me sad to look at the empty spot where the parts should have been. I love seeing this beautiful piano, properly maintained and intact. WAY cool!!

Sorry, I hate to be a fly in the ointment...but...these hammers seems to be "klanky"....it may be the close miking of the piano. Anyway, the sound is good and direct. Not an indictment but just an observation.
