My very first DW. I havent played it since I was a teenager, but it was incredible in my memories. It was so epic and grand for a kid. The generals dying or fleeing was also incredible. It might be nostalgia talking but I felt there was still love in those games, which we don't see anymore.

I agree on most of your points, and others, I agree to a certain point. It was my 1st DW game, so I had nothing to compare it to in the series. I guess it helps that I was barely a teenager. Nostalgia is likely clouding my mind. I think it was the memories of playing with my cousin, brother, and sister that really makes it stick out as my fav DW game subjectively. I do remember the kingdom storylines getting repetitive upon the first or second completion of each kingdom. That's when I ultimately quit the game.
Let's gooooo the review series continues!!!!!! DW5 my favorite is next! I am shocked you gave it an 8/10. Your fans know how you feel about DW4. It's actually refreshing for someone to give their opinions on 4 without having nostalgia for it like a lot of us. DW4 was my first DW game as a kid and I can admit the nostalgia bias gets in the way. It's got a you love it or hate it feel. I actually really like the more dark and foreboding color pallet and themes of the game from the cutscenes to the music, but quite a lot of DW3 fans didn't really dig it, so I think that's why 5 went back to that more vibrant and energetic style of 3. I agree with a lot of the cons. The game is just plain hard. I remember grinding all the characters on The Yellow Turban stages as a kid just to be able to get through Musou mode on easy. I've got to say though, I still think 3 edges it in difficulty when you play on hard with a max level character. I don't know if it's the design of the stages or what, but I just sweat more in 3 on hard difficulty. Maybe it's those pesky crossbow archers or that I grew up playing 4. 4 is my second favorite game and I still think that more dark and realistic style can work wonders for a future DW game(Or not, depending on how Origins is recieved), but 5 really fixes just about everything to be more enjoyable gameplay and story wise. Love these mainline game reviews as you know! Can't wait for how you analyze 5. It deserves a 10 just for that bad a** opening with Zhao Yun alone.
My man!!! Yezzir dw4 is a great game objectively and the biggest knocks for me come from the way the musou mode is structured, the dark pallet I think is liked by most but I do like the vibrance of 3 n 5 more, great game just not a personal fave of mine, appreciate you!
Same here. Favourite is DW5. When i am in the mood nowadays, I on the emulator and clear more Musou stages. Like you said, think DW5 fixed a few more things and that made it really enjoyable to pick up some 20 years later. Waiting for the DW5 review now.
One big downside was the camera controls or lack thereof, I remember as a kid it felt like if I turned my head at the same time the camera would rotate faster
10:15 well, that's exact reason why I found myself playing DW4 over modern entries more often. It's not just because AI is more aggressive in this game, or outdated camera/character controls, but every character plays differently as well. You literally can FEEL the difference. Playing guys like Xu Huang or Zhou Tai you can just turn your brain off and cut through the massess with their enormous and safe wide attack range, but the minute you pick someone like Lu Xun or Zhuge Liang, your gameplay changes drastically. You starting to feel (and I mean REALLY) the lack of range, the lack of deffensive moves, starting to rely on your parry more and more often (very vital DW4 mechanic, btw), utilizing items like Wind Scroll, Charge Bracer, etc. Back, when your victories meant something. In the modern games you don't even need parry system due to it's being useless, so they cutted it entirely (not sure about DW9, many tries to start playing this game, all failed). I miss the DW4 difficulty and fed up over the years eating armies in a few moves. But it's just me.
For sure the unique movements and playstyles were definitely impactful and you had to play different depending on who you played which was amazing totally agree
The worst part for me was they removed weapon drops and replaced it with this new weapon xp system. Personally this hurt’s replay-ability as I enjoyed getting insane weapon drops playing on hard difficulty on DW3
I think a better way to handle this would have been "weapon expertise" rather than "weapon experience". You would still collect weapons and the like with their own stats and modifiers, but you would still be stuck with your basic 4 string if you have no weapon expertise.
I think if I could sum up DW4 with one word it would be impactful. For instance, reaching 1000 ko really felt like an accomplishment, and learning the maps and where the healing items are is almost essential. And a note on the individualism. I would posit that DW4 is more individualistic than the later entries, as the move sets are tailor made. These are what made the character for me, along with the personal growth of their weapon, as opposed to the cutscenes. That being said I still get hyped even time XIahou Dun eats his eye!
@@TheNightowlGaming For sure, DW5 is the goat, but the "next-gen" ones after lost a lot of the original feel for a more over-the-top stylized look in my opinion. Where is our remastered DW5 lol

Weapon leveling is way better than hoping RNG gives you a better weapon. Not the biggest fan of 4 but that's definitely something they got right. Duels were pretty cool too.

Hey just got a PS2 for the first time and am glad I waited for your timely review on the new DW4 game. Can't wait until I save up enough to buy this! 😊
HELL YEAH DW4 is still my fav game LOLL my biggest con with it is the fact that Duels, cool as they are (and they totally should come back btw), they can be very unfair at times. Sometimes your opponent spams their Musou, sometimes they buff themselves. Those I can let slide but whenever they full-heal themselves.....that is straight up BS LMAOOO.
DW4 was my entry point into the series and is my all-time favorite. One thing that I don't think you mentioned is that there is a hidden "super armor" value to each character, which further makes each character stand out. This is very noticeable on characters like Sun Jian, Sun Quan, Lu Bu and Zhang Fei. The best part was, this value was always present whether you were playing the character or it was being controlled by AI. I always got a kick playing as Sun Jian ( who has one of, if not THE highest super armor in the game), starting an attack string, then getting dog piled by about 30 peons and seeing old Sun Jian not give an 'eff and just plow right through the swords and spears being jammed in his face. Your attack animation may get stalled for a few seconds, but it won't be stopped. I would pay good money for a Dynasty Warriors 4/XL/Empires remaster. Why doesn't KOEI-Tecmo like money?
My favorite DW TH-camr. Did you ever make a video of your favorite battles across all games? Or like which game did which battle the best, for example I think the best Chang ban bridge is DW5, or the best hu Lao gate is dw4. Love the content man
The french voice acting, at least compared to DW3, was great. Guan Yu was dubbed by Marc Alfos, the french voice of Russel Crowe, Ron Perlman and Danny Trejo. Also thank god the damages inflicted by the archers have been lowered. The archers in DW3 were a f*cking pain in the ass.
I started with DW4 then moved onto 5. I was a big fan of the linear weapon progression in this game, much better than whatever DW6 started giving us. This is making me want to emulate them again.

Lmao jk i can definitely agree with the a.i. difficult though, between my brother, father, and I we have gone through a number of slammed, thrown, or spiked PS2 controllers even while playing on easy. Also, if anyone whose played DW4 recently, wasn't the Nanman Campaign the same where certain parts of the map looked clear when you paused the game but in game they were blocked making travel excruciating long?
Fu Xi and Nu Wa were in DW3? Oh, I have played DW3 too then~!? Didnt know~! :D Remembered that Nu Wa was ... QUICK. Think she might be quicker like Ling Tong in attack.
Dynasty Warriors 4 was my introduction to the series - the amount of tears as a child because i would get my ass handed to me by Lu Bu / every other character because i refused to use block. Such good memories
The only thing I really dislike about DW4 is how they took small portions of bigger maps for smaller battles. I understand that they did that to save money and time but It made it less epic for me. On a side note DW6 had beatiful maps imo, specially Guan Du. Also I didn't like that in DW4 the soldiers got nerfed on how many attacks they could do. In dw3 it was really fun for me seeing npcs going at it with 5 combo charged attacks.
I am currently replaying DW4. For the most part agree with your points, though I did enjoy the kingdoms story mode, mostly because it added some consistency to the experience but I totally get that it gets repetitive. Two additional bad things I'd mention would be 1) blocking. The enemy is ALWAYS blocking on later levels and it is tricky to break their guard because if you miss your combo then they are right back to blocking. However, every time I seem to block I just get my ass kicked. 2) A lot of the stages look the same. This could be lumped in maps being confusing, but every level has fog and looks desaturated as hell. Two improvements to the game I would make are moving the camera away from the character more, and maybe a lock-on option to better control your attacks.
At 15:51, I’d like to imagine the scenario like this, “Oh look, we’re fighting the enemy, and I, Zhou Yu, am guarded by Antonio and Arturo. Doesn’t exactly sound Chinese, but whatever.” LOL
Dynasty warriors 3 and 4 r my favorite games in the series and the sound track in dw4 the look of the game it’s a little gritty I like almost all the stages too and characters look good too
I still don't know why my game that my cousin played when I got it, some stages won't completely load. When that happened, I tend to just restart my PS2. My favorite thing about DW4 though is the officer edits. Got a lvl 10 weapon for my sword and spear edits! Too bad my PS2 is broken and my DW3 copy might have been crushed from the things because of changing locations 😢. I like the detail when certain enemy officers has that aura around them. Good times.
I literally tried to play DW4 the other day but the autolock is so annoying I had to drop it, I dont know how I could play it as a kid without caring, is one of those features that had aged really bad
why would you want to check for weapon level exp its not like your gonna be able to change it mid battle so there's really no reason to check it. Can't complain about the kingdom based story your right about the repetitiveness it's pretty bad. Thats why it was so welcoming to have character based stories in the later games. That's all i disagree with mainly good video nice to see other people talk about this game.
Needed to add one more thing the difficulty in this game i felt like is peak DW on later missions it got stupid hard especially on the actually harder difficulties but it made it a great challenge since if you play it over and over again thinking your a god just to get thrown back to reality it was a great feeling lol
Yeah the difficulty doesnt bother me that much, but yeah the weapon xp check would be cool, so ik when I can just rush the boss and go on to the next character 😁
The auto lock is the most infuriating thing ever. Lack of individualism/repetition part is very true but it’s almost the same, although different, for 5 when playing back to back Musou’s from the same kingdom (which bothered me). Overall this is my favorite. 26 years old and I’ve been playing since I was 6 & now replaying it trying to get everyone’s 10th weapon/max level. Not an easy game.
I respect the opinion, but the soundtrack of DW4 is by far the best in the series. I’m stoked they reintroduced some of the soundtrack in the teaser of DW: Origins. :)
@@TheNightowlGaming Also, thank you for the content! I love it. I haven't played DW since a kid.
Not an easy game.
definitely not an easy game, fun game for its time, it just didnt age well
I respect the opinion, but the soundtrack of DW4 is by far the best in the series. I’m stoked they reintroduced some of the soundtrack in the teaser of DW: Origins. :)
yeah they did sound awesome from the trailers
@@TheNightowlGaming Also, thank you for the content! I love it. I haven't played DW since a kid. I was introduced to it on the PS2 with being introduced to the series of DW4 and have been a fan since. Nostalgia and the amount of hours played on that with my younger brother are some of the best memories I have with him. Thank you.
@@Dricccc Appreciate the kind words 🙏🙏
I loved the difficulty.
100% on the voice acting
Thank god they got rid of Diaochan’s DW4 voice actress 😂
Some of them weren't great, but definitely better
Cao cao voice fckn suck
My personal favorite DW
Niceee
Awesomeness
😎😎
never forget "Cow Cow" and "Cow Pee"
Legendary
The Lv11 weapon and Power rune make the damage too big even on Expert mode so easy
it does make it easier
If want more challenger dont use attack item or I rather stick with DW4 ,because it dont have power rune and lv 11weapon even lv 10 max item and stat still hard to beat except Lu Bu
The autolock ruined this game for me 100%. Glad DW5 fixed it.
Yeah it seemed the worse in this game
Bad for me: almost no massive maps anymore, it didn't feel like a battlefield but more like objectives
and the morale system, it's so scripted, even when you kill almost all generals the others keep full morale which makes your allies lose
I did not like this one over DW2&3
one of the toughest games
my favorite games on the series 5>6>3 4 is not even close to being on my top 5
Nice! Nothing wrong w that!
Duel 💩
4 is my least favourite of the originals. There is hardly anything about the game i enjoy.
aint nothing wrong w that !
