In Kali and Silat, which incorporate similar empty hand striking concepts as Muay Thai/Muay Boran, we call those blocks "destructions", as they are designed to destroy any incoming "weapon" (fist, etc.). They're simultaneously offensive/defensive and allow for transitioning between offense and defense to flow much more easily and smoothly.

Yes, limbs destruction... train a lot in Panantukan/Pangamut.

Correct, Silat and Kali use a lot of elbows too, but not as "conventional" as muay thai/boran

    Hi Sylvie! Love the channel!
The elbow blocks you described and even the rotation with the arm movements is a foundational keystone of Muay Thai Chaiya (a lineage of Muay Boran). I trained it north of Chaing Mae in Mae Taeng! Some call it the durian fruit style: trying to grab something that is spikey so your opponent hurts themselves from your pointy elbow and knee defence.
Thanks for all the hard work you do!

Hi, Sylvie, in Thai it is called That Malaa, which means to put on the flower...as the movement looks like you are putting a flower on your hair, and also the opponents punch being the flower gets defflected and goes to your hair, or impact with your elbow and damages the hand.
The wonder woman blocks you reffer too, would be called Bphud in thai, meaning deflect.
This are all practiced in thai boxing, combininng the elbow techniques like wieng sok ( circular elbow) That Malaa ( putting on the flower) and Choop sok ( kissing the elbow) you will have that elbows from the guard that you reffer too. NIce video! Love to watch your experiences in Thailand. Cheers!!

Hey Sylvie, love this video. Thanks. In Jiu-Jitsu one might do this block with both arms and charge into a person’s chest when they throw a haymaker. At my school it’s called a “rhino charge.” While we would then look for a body lock and take down, it could lend itself to a Thai clinch I suppose.

My coach has trained me to block like this lol mostly for hooks since since I’m not advanced enough to enter a fight that allows elbows, but this is also great for body shots. You kinda roll with the punches to take some impact away

All 5 m training, my master didn't let me wear gloves but white cotton tapes. Tbh, I feel like as you say feel more when elbow or punch. He says that you can't find any gloves at street fight. You have to make your hands and feet tough and rough. So you won't whine if you have to punch someone. He doesn't teach to fight on the ring but to defend if something happens.
But I wear gloves now when I hit a bag, I asked him a permission, hahaha.
I shared my little experiences to you too.

nice!!!! when defense & offense combine together , opponent is hard to read.
i've been training werstling, bjj, mt ,
many skill & concept in traditional martial arts is excellent in any condition,
such as palm strikes is better than punch in empty-handed,
nearly have the same damage to ur opponent ¬ easy hurt by their skull
low, middle, kick beautiful, but when chin crash chin...chin crash elbow...
our leg will get broken or injure
in traditional mt /karate ,when catch opponent leg,
will immediate use elbow or any skill to destory their joint, not only td
(off coz wont really hit parnter in sparring )
and oblique kick is extermly useful in real fight , i've watched ufc game use it& trained too,
all kind of traditional martial arts is want to maim ur opponent,
in those condition, will narrow the gap between weight, height,
useful or useless just all about how u train , sparring to set up gd sence & reaction,
some of my classmate said traditional martial arts all trash b4,
but after they sparring with me, they understand real fight is different
those Kali and Silat, chinese kf sifu weak coz they dont have sparing,
even not used to opponent so they never know the timing, distance, how to set up,
    ,afraid punch/kick/knee/elbow....etc
    sorry my eng is bad...

I always block that way since I was beginner. I was taught that it is called the horn block. But I find that it leaves me pretty susceptible to being attacked on my body because a smarter fighter will pick up on it and feint attacks to get me to to block. Haha but it's just become my default blocking method so it's kinda hard to kick the habit

    • @8limbsUs
      @8limbsUs  6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

PRSer In Muay Thai the body is protected by the knees and shins, not by the arms. This guard leaves you no more open than any other. Just learn to defend the body elsewise.

I've been a fan of traditional martial arts defenses for a long time and think modern boxing defenses are overrated, once you integrate elbow blocks, leverage blocks, palm strikes and stiff arms into your game you can transition so fast into the clinch that the opponent doesn't even realize what happened. When every defensive maneuver is a strike or every offensive maneuver is a block it becomes that much harder for your opponent to read your defense.
