Same here. Very frightening! I stick my head in the freezer and breath in and it stops.

Could it be sleep apnea? Laryngospasm is when your vocal cords are irritated such as when you’re intubated…

This is what my voice therapist told me to do: "If it happens again, try and sniff through your nose, tiny little sniffs and exhale with your mouth pursed like you're going to whistle. That opens up the airway."

This happened to me twice under anaesthesia ...
Absolute panic stricken the first time ..
I could hear all around me as one was saying "get another tank"..as I woke up but couldnt breathe in or out whatsoever and I can recall fidgetng my body aiming to breathe bit just couldn't ..couldn't speak or anything ...and my thoughts were foreboding ..my mind was slowly getting blacker..darker .. that's when acceptance took over ..I was a gonna..
But I also heard nurses come back and a male voice was near my ears "try To breathe now.."
As the mask enveloped my face with the oxygen gas flowing in rapidly..
The blackness was first to disappear and my eyes opened again as I took in more air .
    It was petrifying ..
The second time I accepted it was occurring again much earlier on..
And just prepared for the worse without the panic..
How did I manage to be so calm the second time round? I amazed myself!

Thank you for this. I had I laryngeal spasm right after waking up from knee replacement surgery. I couldn't breathe and thought I was dying as I was going in and out of consciousness. They called Code Blue and then I remember I was under oxygen and morphine. Terrifying is not even close to what I experienced. Now I'm afraid to have another surgery...

Did you feel like you were suffocating under water ?? I felt like i was under water trying to get more air by swallowing and swallowing. And then I woke up a bit later and kept coughing up nasty tasting yellow crap

How terrifying it must have been. I was panic stricken as I gasped for breath. I heard the nurse call ‘Code Blue’ and that’s all I remember… I, too, was given oxygen and morphine the rest of the night.

@@melissabrill8367 it did feel very much like drowning but without the water ..
I vaguely recall a gagging reflex but no actual air passed through in or out..I was just trying so hard to breathe nothingness .
