The video was generalized to fit a broader audience but the song was actually written about a young female soldier that died in his arms and that is why at about 4:30 he sings "and someones little girl was taken from the world tonight."
The letter he hands to the "wife" in the video would be as a representation of the letter the young soldier wrote to her next of kin before she went into combat and that he would have ultimately handed to her parents in real life. She was from New York and that is why you hear him mention New Yor City in the song.
He uses real time on the scene video footage that he shot and that is why you also can see real time war zone footage of graves and children in "No Bravery" taken from his tank.
Hard themes to get your head around and probably harder for those that have lived through them.

The video actually works great with the song. The lady probably already knew her partner had died. But the song is called Carry you home. He did in a way. He brought the most significant things her partner had with him to her.

Plenty of soldiers have brought back items from dead comrades. It's a fairly regular thing.
And the point "carry you home" carrying the important items and bringing them back to the people who loved them.
As for the cliffs, she just happens to live by the cliffs and he showed up while she happend to be outside.

I don't believe he told her he died. He brought her the letter and tags from his fellow soldier instead of just sending them on. She had already been officially notified. A respect from him to a comrade. Could be wrong.

A bit of an odd reaction, guys. Other commenters have already explained what was going on and that it wasn’t random that he brought her personal effects home. Glad you made it clear that you liked the song, though. From what I’ve read and seen in interviews, James Blunt’s service in Kosovo was difficult (if you don’t know, there was a genocide going on) and I gather that he saw things that really bothered him. As a few others have, I’d recommend that you watch and react to his official video of NO BRAVERY. He took the footage himself when he was stationed there. The words and film are very somber, but it’s a gut wrenchingly powerful song. He’s an incredibly underrated singer/songwriter and got a lot of hate from the press and his peers shortly after YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL became such a massive hit. Anyway, IF you can spare the time, I’d love to see your reaction to NO BRAVERY. Thanks.
