Dr. Barnett, I am so glad I found you on TH-cam. I'm so greatful for you speaking how I was raised to believe. I have a question that I pray you see. My dear friend had a horrible abusive childhood and never followed God's word due to the Scientology church his parents belonged to he turned from religion. I prayed for him to become a Christian and tried talking to him about it but he would just brush me off. The last conversation I had with him was when he had his heartattack and was afraid he was going to die. I told him to just know where he was going if that happened and to talk to his Christian fiance for guidance. He passed away shortly afterwards before repenting however, he told her that he wanted to start going to church on a regular basis as soon as they got settled in and even began praying with her. I know he was heading towards the right direction. I just wonder if God read his heart and took him to heaven. Sorry for the long post but it has been bothering me. How can someone get so close to finding Christ but die right before?

Anyway, it won't put a damper on your heavenly experience. Like I said, you only think you love these people now, but you are simply deceived. Love and hate are easily confused in this world where we don't know anything.

But there is less evil people who do good deeds for sure and love others, do charity , take care of the poor or animals. Why would those people have eternal suffering incomparision to let's say Nero or Hitler etc. I know there are levels of hell and suffering but still I have trouble with this. Just think about it, hell must be so horrible that Jesus was willing to die a torturous death all the while mocked as well. Literally hung on the cross and asked the Father to forgive those who were doing the torturing and crucifixion. Praise God he rose from the dead and conquered sin and death!!!

It's funny how Christians who secretly revel in the idea of others suffering forever in Hell somehow think they have traded in a worldly morality for a more pure and Holy one. This is as purely evil a belief as has ever been held.

I like Pastor John Pipers assessment of predestination:
God determines from eternity who will be saved, who will be lost. But he does it in ways that are mysterious to us so that on that day no one will find any legitimate fault with God. No. The redeemed will know we are saved utterly by grace while deserving hell and the rest will know that they suppressed much knowledge of God’s grace and they deserve to perish.

One thing I heard John Piper say that's not right.....he said that no one knows whether there're truly saved or not until they die and find out. He even said he's not sure because of predestination (the Bible says we can know and can be confident) He definitely said that, but I can't find that particular video anymore, so maybe he's changed that idea.

(Mysteries that are hidden in plain sight) This parable of the rich man and Lazarus, “without a parable did He speak to them” had nothing to do with a hell or eternal punishment. When these mysteries of God’s Word was spoken, Jesus would always leave clues. Who was the man with no name, who had five brothers, who was the man with a name, or what prophecy was fulfilled when the dogs came? These clues make It crystal clear what the message of Jesus was. From the pulpit today most, but not all, teach this parable with this implication. If you don’t believe you will burn in hell in eternal torment, forever like the rich man.

24:00 the wood doesn't perpetually burn forever, it is burnt up and destroyed, just as it says we will be destroyed, not eternal destroying process. Matthew 10:28 says both soul and body can be destroyed, so how can you be tormented forever if both body and soul is destroyed? The punishment is eternal because you cant raise from death, you are dead forever, therefore eternal darkness. And it says the fire is unquenchable, not your suffering. But it still might be eternal torment, because Isaiah 66:24 and Mark 9:48 says their worm will never die. But other than that, the other verses make more sense with annihilationism.

*NO!* The Hades and Gehenna that Christ spoke of did NOT originate with him. Hades and Gehenna were Greek-modified views of the afterlife adopted by Jews during the intertestamental period (1 Enoch; Judith; c.200-100 BC). Christ could not have meant that Hades and Gehenna were real, because he would be denying the Old Testament view of death (cessation of life) and embrace the Hades/Gehenna of the Apocryphal books.

I have been fighting this for about 5 to 6 years now that I became really aware of that it's sin( more or less been doing it for about 20 years total). I do believe in Jesus, I speak about Jesus to my girlfriend and friends, people online etc. But this makes me fearful. That Jesus will say I never knew you to me..I struggle so much with this sin and want to overcome but it's so hard . Am i not freed? Is my faith not strong enough? I don't know. Your flesh is fighting the process. As a Christian you will being the world, the flesh and the devil. But you have the word of God, His Name and the Blood of Christ as weapons. Fast and pray, read the Bible and remove yourself from people and things that will cause you to fall into sexual sin. Are you sleeping with your girlfriend, watching porn etc. These vices will trigger sexual sins. God loves you and wants to deliver you. Also talk to your pastor. Get in a men's group at church. I struggle myself with the same sin and I feel bad as well after. It's hard to resist but know this. It's a human trait, all we can do is keep asking for forgiveness, he knows our struggles, Jesus himself was tempted tree times by the devil and he over came it and the devil flee from him we too must resist and when the temptation comes, pray first to the Lord for strength to overcome that desire... remember temptation isn't a sin unless you act on it. Jesus was tempted he didn't act on it he attack back with his words from the word of God.....we're temped by sin if we act on it then we must pray for forgiveness but if resist it,then sin hasn't over taken us brother.

Good talk. That's why we must repent, be baptized in full immersion in the name of Jesus Christ. Then we must recieve the Holy Spirit with the bible evidence of speaking in tongues. Look up Acts 1, the promise of the Holy Spirit that Jesus had told them that was coming called the comforter. Told them to wait in jerusalem. Acts 2:1 the day of pentecost 120 of them including the apostles and his mother Mary were waiting. It was around 9.00 in the morning. The Holy Spirit came as a rushing mighty wind and filled the place where they were sitting. Fire appeared symbolising the Holy Spirit. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Then again Acts 10.44 when Peter and some of the Jews went to Cornelius house. While Peter was speaking to Cornelius house hold about Jesus, the Holy Spirit fell on all of them that herd the word. How did they know? For they heard them speak with new tongues and magnify God. Acts 19:1-9. Different time period. Paul the apostle found some of John's disciples. He asked them, have you recieved the Holy Spirit when you believed. They said they didn't know about any Holy Spirit. Then Paul told them about Jesus. They got baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and recieved the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues. And people are still recieving the Holy Spirit with the bible evidence of speaking in tongues today, it hasn't stopped. Only when Jesus returns will the pouring out of the Holy Spirit cease. Mark 16:15 these signs shall follow them that believe. One of the signs is speaking with new tongues. Read 1Corinthians 14:1- to the end of the chapter. Don't be decieved. Amen.

It is not that some Christians are any less serious about the Bible as God’s Word, but, so they wonder, perhaps there is another way of interpreting the Bible when it comes to the topic of hell, perhaps the proponents of hell are a lot more unbiblical in their position than they ever held possible.
Here, then, are some of the Biblical writings against the traditional concept of hell as an eternal place of fire, despair, decay, and conscious torment.
    1. The Bible is Ambiguous About Hell The first thing that needs to be noted is that the Bible is actually quite ambiguous about the idea of hell.
In the Old Testament, there was little thought about an afterlife in some paradisiacal state of Heaven. When people died, they simply went to Sheol, the place of the dead, where deceased souls remain in what is described as a whispering state (Psalm 6:5; 9:17; 49:14; 139:8).
God’s blessings pertained mainly to life while here on Earth (but see Psalm 16:10): Abraham looked for offspring and a promised land here on earth (Genesis 12:1-3).
In the New Testament, the Greek notion of Hades pops up here and there (Revelation 1:18; 20:14). Hades is similar to Sheol. It’s a place of no return for the dead. The idea of Hades is tied to that of Greek mythology.
Jesus, however, preferred to use the term Gehenna a term that referred to the Valley of Hinnom (cf. Matthew 10:28).
Then, in Revelation, there is also a pool of fire in which Hades, unbelievers, the devil, and Antichrist are thrown (Revelation 20).
All in all, too many terms and definitions to be able to speak of a clear definition of hell as a clear concept or real tangible place for the dead.
    2. The Idea of Eternal Conscious Torment is At Odds With a God of Love It has almost become a cliche: a truly loving and good God cannot possibly tolerate the eternal punishment of sinful beings.
While there are all sorts of discussions that can be had around this argument to nuance it, such as the concept of time and eternity or the nature of hell, it is at least true that the idea is quite valid.
Can you imagine being in Heaven and then waking up on something like day 6,984,561,884 of your time in Heaven and saying to yourself: “I wonder how my former non-Christian colleague who was an atheist is doing in hell?”
    This idea is ridiculous.
Yet, this is the concept of eternity as the eternal time that those who favor hell as an eternal place of conscious torment use to conceive of hell.
Those who oppose this with the argument of a loving God, have a point: such hellish eternal torment is not compatible with a God of pure love.
It is too simplistic to think about God (cf. Isaiah 55:8).
That is not to say that God cannot be “angry”, or that there cannot be any punishment. It just means that eternal conscious punishment is an unbearable thought, not just to the love of God, but even our simple human love.
    3. Jesus Spoke Metaphorically About Judgment It is essential to understand that
Jesus’ talk about hell was metaphorical.
A great problem for those who take the Bible literally is that they don’t get it when the Bible employs metaphorical, symbolical, or imaginative language.
Jesus’ talk about hell is a good point in case. When talking about hell, he spoke about Gehenna (Mark 9:45; Matthew 10:28). Gehenna was common parlance among the Jewish people in that day.
Gehenna refers to the Valley of Hinnom which, in Jesus’ time, was the garbage dump in Jerusalem where you could always see smoke from the never-ending fires as well as maggots and worms in whatever was rotting there.
So when Jesus warns against ending up in the place where the fires always burn and the worm doesn’t die, he is talking metaphorically about the state of punishment and regret that people will find themselves in if they reject the Son of man.
Jesus is not giving some supernatural information about what the place, hell, is really like, but he is warning us of regret more than punishmentt that will be the fate of willful wrongdoers.
    4. Hell is a Place For Believers, not Unbelievers
This is a very controversial statement of course. But when you look at the teaching of Jesus, who spoke more about hell than anyone else in the Bible, it becomes quickly clear that his audience consisted of believers, not unbelievers.
It seems Jesus was concerned that his audience would not take his messages all too seriously. However, the people who listened to him seemed to think they were okay since they belonged to the people of Israel, or, like the Pharisees, to a sect that observed the priestly laws, or, like the priests and the Sadducees, to the group that was actually in power in Israel (cf. Matthew 23:33). An analogy might be a University Professor who suggests the failure of a required course if the students do not learn the material.
In the Bible, as soon as non-Jews (Romans, Gentiles, Greeks, let’s say “nonbelievers”) came into the picture, any talk of hell immediately stopped.
The Roman Centurion’s faith is praised, the Samaritan woman by the well finds salvation, the Gentile woman who had a demon-possessed daughter is treated according to her faith, but no hell is ever mentioned.
That is odd given our ingrained idea that those who have never made a decision for Jesus are destined for hell.
Therefore, one could wonder why evangelists today would tempt nonbelievers to make a decision for Jesus by threatening them with hell.
    That is simply a falsehood.
Hell is for believers, i.e., for hypocritical believers.
The danger for believers to become hypocritical is ever so great that hell needs to come into the picture.
    5. Revelation speaks metaphorically in the Bible, Jesus’ metaphorical language concerning hell is continued in the last book of the New Testament, Revelation.
Biblical Scholars know that basically, everything said in this book needs to be taken as imagery, metaphor, and/or symbolism. We know this because Revelation belongs to a particular genre of literature, Apocalyptic literature, in vogue during those days.
In Apocalyptic literature, weird beings appear, and the barrier between Heaven and Earth is obliterated. Numbers take on symbolical significance, and places, events, and characters take on a metaphorical function.
The metaphor stretches our minds because it connects things we don’t typically connect. In Revelation, it says that the pool of fire will devour death and Hades (Revelation 20:14).
Of course, we can’t take this literally. It’s metaphorical. If anything, it might as well mean that the pool of fire will end it all, even eternal torment in hell, since Hades (hell) is thrown into it.
In the end, we can only speculate.
A most important lesson is that even in an inerrant Bible, the metaphor doesn’t give us infallible knowledge but stretches our imagination and confronts us with mystery without solving it.
    6. Belief In Hell is Believing More than Is Revealed
Those who reject the notion of eternal torment in a place thought of as hell do so because the Bible does not give enough warrant to believe that such a place with such torment exists or that it should be part of Christian doctrine.
Of course, these rejectors don’t think there’s no punishment, no justice, or setting the score straight.
Of course, these rejectors have a healthy respect for God’s wrath against iniquity.
But they don’t buy the whole eternal-torment-in-hell concept.
Believing such a thing is believing more than is revealed and going further than Jesus’ teachings.
The Bible warns against adding to the Gospel (Revelation 22:18).
On that basis, many a doctrine ought to be removed from Christian theology.
Rather, God is a God of Hope for the broken-hearted (Matthew 5:3).
There are already enough people who have absolutely no need for hell since they have already lived in it their entire lives.
Think of the Yezidi girls in ISIS territory.
Generally, they are not Christians and are sold and abused as sex slaves by ISIS.
Do you think that God can’t wait to throw them in the actual hell, so many Christians believe hell is prepared for unbelievers once their miserable lives are over?
Isn’t it much more likely that the God who cares for widows and orphans is dying (pun intended) to extend his love and comfort to these suffering beings whose lives have been ruined by an evil that does not need hell?

This says a lot about a God who creates people to whom he knows will reject him, just to burn them. And this God is a loving God?
I'm a sinner you are sinner because Christ's Dad put that tree in the garden and let Adam and Eve decide for us.
How is it God is sooooo loving and not willing any should perish but yet so many have died without hearing about Christ.
Think of the 1500 years between Christ's death and Columbuses discovery of America. All those people in North and South America lived and died for centuries.... without Jesus..
Why isn't Jesus honest in the Bible? Why doesn't he just come right out and say it. I've come to save you from what I will do to you if you don't accept me.
Oh yeah and if it's so dark there then how did Lazarus see Abraham and the Richman?
Only evil could come up with a place such as hell to punish anyone who dies a sinner especially seeing how they didn't ask to be born one to begin with.

Bingo. It isn't possible to hold a more evil belief than the existence of Hell. Especially one sanctioned by a purely good being.
There are literally an infinite number of ways to hold people accountable for wrong doing, sin if you like. Christianity picked the two most ridiculous ends of the spectrum, and just said "eh, fucq it. Let's just go with it". The only way to atone for sin is to punish the one innocent man for everyone else? Then if you don't accept this offer, or don't find it credible, or believable you suffer eternally for your lack of credulity?

Look up the definition of lawlessness. There are commands about keeping the Sabbath and following God's Holy Days (not the world's holidays). Read the Bible and do what it says. If you love Him, keep His commandments. It's the way we say, "Thank You!." Only He could pay the price we owe. Repentance is turning from something to something else. The only thing to turn to are His instructions for living a righteous life and following the example of our Savior. Plan on being persecuted by those who say they believe.

Jesus tells us in Matthew 24:4 "Take heed that no one deceives you". because that is what this video is doing. Satan told Eve in the Garden of Eden "you shall not surely die" Gen 3:4 and he has been telling this lie ever since. The immortality of the soul as prompted by Greek philosophy (Plato & Socrates) has been adopted by most religions in some form or another. But as stated in the bible, God's word is clear that at death the body returns to the earth and the Breath of Life returns to God as stated in Gen 2:7 & 3:19. A living soul requires a body and the breath of God (Ezek 18:4, 20 & Eccl 12:7). Also see Eccl 9:5 & 10. Jesus refers to death as sleep in Mark 5:39, Luke 8:52 & John 11:12-14. There is no one currently burning in hell and there are no bodiless spirits floating around in heaven. The Bible tells us that only 3 human beings were taken by God to heaven: Enoch walked with God (Gen 5:24); God buried Moses and then resurrected him (Duet 34:5-7; Jude 9) & Elijah was translated by God (2Kings 2:1-11). Moses represents all the righteous dead who will be resurrected and Elijah represents the living righteous who be translated without seeing death at the second coming of Jesus as Paul tells us in 1Thess 4:13-18).
Don't believe people who try and take a few scriptures like 1Thess 4;14 and twist them to make you think that Christ is going to bring back with him all the spirits that have been supposedly floating around in heaven all this time to reunite them with their bodies. You need to read the whole chapter as Paul is trying to comfort those believers who lost loved ones by telling them that they will be a resurrection for those who sleep in Christ at His second coming.
Some scholars suggest that Luke 16:19-31 should be interpreted
literally, that is, as describing the state of the dead. But this view would
lead to several unbiblical conclusions and would contradict many of the
passages that we have already looked at.
First, we would have to admit that heaven and hell are close enough
to allow a conversation between the dwellers of both places (Luke
16:23-31). We also would have to suppose that in the afterlife, while
the body lies in the grave, there remains a conscious form of the spiritual soul with “ ‘eyes,’ ” a “ ‘finger,’ ” a “ ‘tongue,’ ” and which even
    feels thirst (Luke 16:23, 24).
If this passage were a description of the human state in death, then
heaven would certainly not be a place of joy and happiness because the
saved could closely follow the endless sufferings of their lost loved ones,
and even dialogue with them (Luke 16:23-31). How could a mother be
happy in heaven while beholding the incessant agonies of her beloved
child in hell? In such a context, it would be virtually impossible for God’s
promise of no more sorrow, crying, and pain to be fulfilled (Rev. 21:4).
Because of such incoherence, many modern biblical scholars regard
the story of the rich man and Lazarus as a parable from which not
every detail can be interpreted literally. George E. Ladd says that this story was probably
“a parable which made use of current Jewish thinking and is
not intended to teach anything about the state of the dead.”-G. E. Ladd,
“Eschatology,” in The New Bible Dictionary, edited by J. D. Douglas
    (Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans, 1962), p. 388.
The parable of the rich man and Lazarus presents a sharp contrast
    between a well-dressed “ ‘rich man’ ” and “ a certain beggar named
Lazarus, full of sores’ ” (Luke 16:19, 20, NKJV). The account teaches
that (1) status and social recognition in the present are not the criteria for
the future reward, and (2) the eternal destiny of each person is decided in
this life and cannot be reversed in the afterlife (Luke 16:25, 26).
Please read and study the bible for yourself and do not take a single text out of context. Satan is using movies, TV shows, books, music, etc. confuse and mislead people on the true nature of the state of the dead as stated in God's word. Don't be deceived, your eternal life may depend on it.

It is a shame that this isn't at all about the final state of humanity but about Hades - as the video says is the abode of the *dead* not just the unsaved and is a coverall term which includes paradise/abraham's bosom. It is not "a living immortal soul in the vestibule of the lake of fire" - that is just not in the text and is an imported idea. It is possibly a soul in Hades but Hades is emptied and destroyed in the Lake of Fire in Rev 20 so they cannot be one and the same.
Jesus doesn't talk more about hell than heaven.
The last book of the bible does not use the word 'gehenna', it is only Jesus and James who uses the word and James only once.
This video is just one long sermon of someone imposing a view on the text rather than letting scripture speak.

Up until about 500 A.D., Christian beliefs about hell were reasonable and beautiful. The prevailing view then was that hell (the lake of fire, actually) not only punished but also purified the unrighteous. It was temporary -- each person's finite punishment would fit their finite crimes (sins). (The Greek speaking early church fathers knew that _aionios,_ the Greek word that is mistranslated as "eternal" in most English Bibles, doesn't mean "eternal.") Once a person's punishment and purification were complete, he or she would go to heaven. Everyone would eventually make it into heaven and be blessed, with heavenly rewards varying by person, based on the lives they led.

Most leading early church fathers were Christian universalists:
"Christ saves all men. Some he converts by penalties, others who follow Him of their own will ... that every knee may be bent to Him, of those in heaven, on earth, and under the earth" [Isa. 45:22-23, Rom. 14:11, Phil. 2:10-11, Rev. 5:13] -- *Clement of Alexandria,* _Commentary on 1 John_
"When death shall no longer exist, nor the sting of death, nor any evil at all, then, verily, God will be All in all" [1 Cor. 15:28,55] -- *Origen,* _De Principiis 3:6.3_
"What else does 'until the times of universal restoration' signify to us, if not the aeon to come, in which all beings must receive their perfect restoration?" [Acts 3:21] -- *Eusebius,* leading historian of the early church, _Contra Marcellum __2:4:11_
"A few drops of blood renew the whole world, and become for all men that which rennet is for milk, uniting and drawing us into one." [Col. 1:15-20] -- *Gregory Nazianzus,* _Oration 42_
"Christ captured over again the souls captured by the devil, for that He promised in saying, 'I, if I be lifted up, will draw all men unto Me.'" [John 12:32, 1 Peter 3:19-20, 4:6, Psalm 68:18, Eph. 4:8-10, and maybe Matt. 12:29] -- *Athanasius,* _Expositions on the Psalms, 68.18_
"The peace [coming] from the Lord is coextensive with all time [eternity]. For all things shall be subject to him, and all things shall acknowledge his empire; and when God shall be all in all, those who now excite discords by revolts, having been quite pacified, [all things] shall praise God in peaceful concord." [Psalm 145:10a, 1 Cor. 15:28, Rev. 5:13] -- *Basil,* _Commentary on Isaiah 9:6_
"So the Son of Man came to save that which was lost, i.e., all, for as in Adam all die, so, too, in Christ shall all be made alive." [Luke 19:10, 1 Cor. 15:22] -- *Ambrose,* _Exposition on the Gospel of Luke 15.3_
"For the wicked there are punishments not perpetual, ... but they are to be tormented for a certain brief period, according to the amount of malice in their works. They shall therefore suffer punishment for a short space, but immortal blessedness, having no end, awaits them; ... the penalties to be inflicted for their many and grave crimes are very far surpassed by the magnitude of the mercy to be showed them. The resurrection, therefore, is regarded as a blessing, not only to the good, but also to the evil." [Isa. 57:16], *Diodore,* _De Oecon_
"Some among the wise and learned … have alluded to this in an enigmatic way, by adducing that God is not only just, but also merciful, and that it becomes the One who judges with justice to have sinners suffer in a measure that is proportional to their sins and then make them worthy of blessedness." -- *Theodore,* _Liber Scholiorum, 2:63_
"'All the kings of the earth shall adore him.' Some, indeed, in the present life willingly, but all the rest after the Resurrection; for not yet do we see all things subject to him, but then every knee shall bow to him." [The "kings of the earth" are rebellious unbelievers in Rev. 6:15, 17:2,18, 18:3,9, 19:19,21 ... but check out what happens in Rev. 21:24-27!] -- *Theodoret,* _On Psalm 72:11_
"Death shall come as a visitor to the impious; it will not be perpetual; it will not annihilate them; but will prolong its visit, till the impiety which is in them shall be consumed." [Matt. 5:26] -- *Jerome,* _On Micah 5:8_
"After the complete abolition of sin, praise shall be sung to God; which praise contain (implies) our being incapable of turning to sin ... when every created being shall be harmonized into one choir ... and when, like a cymbal, the reasonable creation, and that which is now severed by sin ... shall pour forth a pleasing strain, due to mutual harmony. Then comes the praise of every spirit for ever abounding with increase unto eternity." [Psalm 150] -- *Gregory of Nyssa,* _On Psalms, Tract 1, ch. 9_
Other church fathers who believed in eventual universal salvation include *Asterius, Bardaisan, Cyril of Alexandria, Didymus the Blind, Dionysius, Ephrem the Syrian, Gennadius, Hilary, John Cassian, John Chrysostom, Marcellus, Maximus the Confessor, Maximus of Turin, Methodius, Paulinus, Proclus, Titus of Basra & Victorinus.*

His name isn't Jesus because in thekir language at that time the letter J didnt even exist in the hebrew alphabet. His name is Yeshua. That being said, by the answering of prayers He knows we are worshiping Him through the translated name we chose to give Him, so it seems He doesn't mind too much. Just seems disrespectful to me, so I call him Christ, our Lord and Master 😁😇🙏

I agree that the love of the Lord should be preached. Jesus however spoke about hell 3 times more than heaven. It's out of love that he doesn't want you to go down. It's out of love that warning after warning saves from hellfire. When I hear love and grace, i feel ashamed from my sin because my heart isnt hardened to the point where i dont receive it but some peoples heart are too hard and the preaching of love and grace goes over their head.but like with any addiction we use love and grace like a crutch. Jesus said when we go out to preach say "Repent! For the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"

Not teaching hell and "sprinkling" christianity or "easy" believism are why so many people are going to end up in hell. Jesus even said - Matthew 7:21-23 - 21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
