I met Tim Flannery at Adelaide university back in 98 when he was a professor of paleontology & director of SA museum. Nice genuine guy with a real passion for our planets wellbeing.

The US subsidizes huge amounts of crop such as wheat and corn, which has also created artificial demand (Sugar epidemic, Bread in the food pyramid for example). Maybe they can transition slowly into seaweed subsidies too.
I've learned somewhere that in days of early civilization, humans used seaweed to fertilize fields... Maybe that could be a thing.

It's still a thing in a lot of coastal areas. I've done it myself. It's a very effective fertilizer.
Seaweed is great as fertilizer, but that process does not remove the co2 seaweed embodies from the atmosphere. The goal of this talk is to remove the co2 completely and lock it up at depth.

This deserves way more attention
The mass production of seaweed can be paired with sea sponges. Sea sponges help keep the seaweed healthy by filtering the water of bacteria and pollutants. Later on it can be used to produce sand. (There is a huge global shortage of sand)
I've been reading a lot about alternative protein for human and animal nutrition and seaweed is also an amazing source as well.
This is inspired thinking. Great video.

Great presentation, reminds me of one of my favorites that is a talk about how we could easily feed the world population with these underwater ocean farms. Lines up perfectly with this one, so not only famine wouldn't be a problem but climate change too, what a great idea.
Great presentation! We could combine Oceanic Permaculture with Onshore Permaculture to store the carbon back in our soils!
Could you make an organic co2 filter with the idea from the seaweed. it would have to be replaced a lot. Start somewhere? How does it grab co2?

That would be counter-productive. If people eat it most of the carbon would go back into the atmosphere. The whole point of this idea is to bury the sea weed into the deep oceans.
This is indirect c02 capture right because the seaweed pulls the c02 from the ocean water and not from the air.
This could be a really huge idea, like analogous to humans going from hunter-gatherers to farmers. If you could put even a fraction of the world's roughly 30 million career capture fishers to work as marine permaculture farmers it would give them job security (and for many, relative on-the-job safety), it would help with carbon drawdown, and would probably be more productive for the input of effort to output of marine protein into the supply chain.
That is a modest graph at best considering the rates of change are mostly exponential.

Awesome theory! The seas definitely hold a large part of the answer to climate change. Yet, 9% is unbelievably gigantic, it would already be amazing if 0.09% could work as a technical challenge. Like anything related to climate change there is not going to be one single solution. Instead, it will be a collaboration of leading scientific entrepreneurs such as this guy., each with his or her own part of the solution. Let's focus on giving space to such innovations!
9% is indeed a considerable amount of surface but over time and with the right investments, I think we could achieve this. Even though a lot of opportunities are thrown away when it comes to solving climate change, with enough media attention, a lot could be changed. It would probably take at least a decade to make people aware of how critical our situation is and that we need to intervene and it is why TED talks like these are important.

seaweed for water and cannabis for land.
Weed releases terpenes. When mixed with car exhaust create ozone. Denver Colorado is currently dealing with this issue. Plus weed uses a lot of electricity and fresh water.

Introducing a new paper on marine algae. Title of the paper.

if i had any saying in this i would switch to hydroponic interior farming and lab grown meat. that alone would allows us to return 90% of the land we currently use for farming and cattle and turn them back into forests. we currently use 40% of the earth as farm land... that 90% would make a huge difference.
Unfortunately those two solutions have their own problems. While hydroponics reduce the amount of land and water over traditional farming. It requires a ton more energy and huge start-up costs. We also would have to convert traditional land to hydroponic farms, since urban/suburban land is too expensive. If you are looking to do multiple story farms its way too expensive due to construction and lighting. Right now there are only a few crops that justify growing hydroponically. Lab grow meat will also be very expensive. This is mostly due to the media it is grown on, the most popular is FBS (fetal bovine serum, literally unborn calf blood taken from slaughtered pregnant cows). While I applaud the efforts going into this I am not sure it will ever be economically viable. The simplest and easiest method (from an agricultural perspective) is veganism. And while I am not a vegan, nor a vegetarian; I do try my best to lower my animal based food intake. I wish money wasn't the driving factor in business, but unfortunately if you cannot justify things financially it is hard for a business to take on the endeavor.

Could definitely use a lot of that seaweed to restore depleted farmland, to produce carbon neutral combustion fuels, maybe to produce fibers/materials and such.

Indeed. I'm loss why so many do not understand this. Personally I would genetically engineer good tasting seaweed to make a great product, make tons of money, feed the world and solve climate problem.
Money can be made from it, simply by selling the seafood at market rates. The problem is the investment finance model, which demands a high rate of profit for anything commercially unproven.
I agree, but it still can be a profitable endeavor. Seaweed for human or animal consumption, protein production off the same source. Remember there will be inedible or discarded parts of the production that could be released in the way he speaks, but the initial startup costs are the true hurdle.

What about micro algae?
How does it take the co2 out? Can we manufacture a product like this? Can we grow and bury the seaweed? What do we place over the dead seaweed when buried to make it more effective? Could we make a jell like seaweed product?
Great talk, Tim. I'm assuming you meant 200g protein per person per *day*, as 200g per year is not really worth calling out. Still, that's lots of yummy seafood that can feed a lot of people. 😋

Hi, maybe someone could make a plan on how to make a mangrove forest that isn't so "annoying" to the human notice? That sequesters carbon for long time, and a large amount, but it's smelly. Plus, something people don't "like"

I was thinking today (and I have been reading a lot about seaweed for drawdown and 3-D ocean farms), yes seaweed, lot's of seaweed, but how do we sequester the CO2? Oh, just leave them in the ocean, duh.
after a bit more reading, looks like the seaweed will have to be buried in the sediment of the ocean floor. No small feat but hey, it's got to be more feasible and cheaper than a lot of other carbon capture methods at the moment. And it can be scaled-up, lotsa room out there

I didn't ask to be born, yet here I am living with anxiety and fear every day knowing that the planet is going to have a global catastrophe pretty soon during my lifetime and it's going to affect everyone. Honestly, I don't want to live anymore. I don't see a future if all governors and citizens around the world aren't willing to take part in fighting climate change. I hope that we can manage to pull through and manage to stop climate change though.

What will likely happen if we put up huge seaweed farms in the middle of the ocean is, people will notice more seaweed washing up the beaches when on vacations, say "Ewww", and band together to oppose seaweed farms.

Why discourage planting trees, though? It may not make a huge difference, it's not useless. Encourage people to do what they can.
Can't we use seaweed for food packaging? (Basically the concept of sushi) That way we can just throw the package outside or in the Oceans to serve as extra food for the rest of the living residents of this planet.
And as toilet paper. Tissues are made out of wood. Wood comes from trees that are dying by the masses and it takes alot longer to grow while seaweed, mycelium (fungi) or bamboo just take a few weeks.
Also add turtles to make it a self regulating biosphere. The excess turtles can be released back into the Oceans to tackle the massive amounts of yellyfishes that are eating the dwindling pythoplankton population.
Maybe in the near future, someone will realize and founfd a way, to utilize the seaweed into animal feed. The animal then lock up the CO2 long term, convert that CO2 into protein that we are all can enjoy as nowadays meal.
Instead of dumping it why not use it to fertilize soil and help fight deforestation?

@@abz998As pointed out in the video, trees just won't cut it. And seaweed just disappearing isn't the point. Carbon staying out of the atmosphere (such as several km down in the ocean) is the point. It's gonna be broken down as sediment and basically become part of the seafloor, going back to the ground where it should've stayed.
I have to say that western always see a big picture. And the reason is that they have solved the internal problems.

The whole seaweed farm and animal development would work if the ocean was filled with plastic.

I would say do it to a lake before you do it to an ocean since you don't know how it is going to effect the water, animals, and soil.
Better to test it out in secure isolated conditions. The outcome could be worse than what they are trying to counter. Think of the introduction of cane toads into Australia or the accidental transport of brown snakes into Guam among a thousand others.
