  • William Longespee, illegitimate son of Henry II, married to Ela of Salisbury by Richard I, sheriff of Wiltshire; lieutenant of Gascony; constable of Dover; and Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports; later warden of the Welsh Marches; sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire about 1213; finally buried in Salisbury Cathedral. The first to receive this honour.
He lead quite a full life, distinguishing himself in battle, siding with King John in the Baron's Uprising until eventually he is believed to have been poisoned.
His effigy is carved from stone and mounted on an oak box that is heavily decorated and painted.

Look at us. All related in some small way. It's amazing. I'm related through his Daughter Ela Longespee. It's a distant relationship but it's still a relationship lol.

An effigy series is an excellent idea! I think thanks to Tobias Capwell effigies have fairly recently been highlighted as an excellent resource for understanding plate armour, but barring effigiesandbrasses there is rarely a good place to see them.
