I had a 91.5 d250. Put the Cummins in my excursion. Used the dodge alt. I've replaced the external regulator and the pigtail. One lead to the vr is on a key on relay. The other goes to the field coil. The other wire for the field winding is straight to chassis ground. I get battery voltage to the regulator but it's barely charging if at all. With lights on at night I can go about 40 miles at 70 before the battery is almost dead. I jump the field winding straight to battery voltage and it will charge at 18 volts. Been through three brand new regulators. Any ideas?

BE SURE all your ' ground ' connections, are Godly clean ; then, tighten up good. Very IMPORTANT, as ANY amount of resistance, will cause improper excite current ; for alternator to ' cut in '' cut out '' charging.... .. Yours is probably an A circuit arrangement ; there is a B type, too. Educate yourselves, folks, and save $$
