Planting Bamboo in Florida / Propagating bamboo from cutting 7/31/18

Well after doing this for the last 6 months and researching how it's done and talking to a bamboo nursery worker I figure I know enough to show how it's done. Best time of the year is late spring and summer*. May is when it starts to rain and get warm and humid here in FL.
Now in July with lots of rain and mosquitos it's perfect.. Well perfect if you can keep things from flooding. High moisture and humidity are the key. You need a green fresh piece if possible. The cuttings I took in Feb were drier and more dormant and harder to keep wet and humid. You need a few but not to many leaves and branches on your specimen. As long as you can keep a few green leaves on your cutting its alive. When all the leaves turn brown and fall off your cutting isn't strong enough or getting enough water and it's dying.
With any luck I think these should sprout some roots within a month. These are the greenest cuttings I ever collected.
My cuttings from Feb. did pretty well and I got over half to grow but it took a couple months.
If you can dig up a specimen with some roots it's almost a sure thing to grow. The ones I dug up all grew and made 12' culms already. These specimens should grow to 70 feet.
One thing I did here but failed to mention or talk about is to put the cutting in a tub or bucket of water when you cut them and give them a good soak for at least a half hour or so. When I did these it was raining so much and so of then I don't think it would have mattered either way because these did all drown in the rain.
**update most of my July cutting ended up drowning from all the rain. Also these cuttings were from mature, hard, older, woody specimens and it took a long time for them to sprout any roots if they even did. The ones I did in Nov and Dec 2019 grew roots in as little as 4 days. The young shoot tops were the main difference that I can think of.

I have dozens of videos of other clones too.
This is Bambusa vulgaris and this particular one grows in an extremely compact clump with new culms that will come up BETWEEN other culms that are almost touching. It's almost hard to understand how they can put a shoot up right in the middle of a bunch of tightly clumped culms but that's what they do. I see other examples here on TH-cam and they grow 6 inches to a foot apart and spread out more.. Maybe my harvesting shoots from the perimeter made them more compact.

Update May 17 2020:
To answer a broad question regarding a species with 1400 different varieties and how to clone it is best summed up with: "It all depends on the species". They say that running bamboo won't clone or sprout readily from the stalk if buried (not sure what species they were referring to) and some species I don't think you could sprout unless you had one of those cloning chambers at a research facility with a major university or huge agricultural company. Some species will sprout easily and some will just not have it.

Another super easy way is to throw them in a bucket or barrel with an air stone and an aquarium pump. I left them in there for months and only killed a few from drowning.

If you put them horizontally don't cut snorcles uneven from the node point. Cut between two nodes, so Both sides have same amount of snorcles. Where from the new trees shall get food. And what we do, sprout them before putting them into the soil. When roots come out within 12/14 days we put them into the soil where drainage is good, no stagnant water. Let me know the result pls. @@QuaziAhasanHoSM We are having a very dry season with very little rain so far this year. It's getting warm and we got a little rain over the last few days. My other bamboo's are just starting to make some new shoots from the ground but all varieties seem to be growing branches everywhere for the last month or more. It seems like they have enough energy to push branches out, will they have enough strength to make roots? I will try some new cuttings soon. Thank you very much for the advise Quazi. People think I know everything about bamboo but I'm the first to admit I'm still learning, and there is much to know. What kinds of bamboo do you have in Bangladesh?
@@seetheforest well that makes two of us, learner. We have more than 400 species here in Bangladesh, and ours is a tropical country. We don't try to propagate in rainy season because of heavy moisture. Which causes the ryzhom to rot.
@@QuaziAhasanHoSM I figured you would have many species. In Florida we have only a few. The biggest growers in Florida maybe have 50 species at the most. We don't have wild bamboo you have to find it and move it. I have about 6 different species.

If your collecting get some newer shoots after they get some roots and a few branches with leaves. A few roots and leaves and it will be able to grow. Start off with part shade and move tgem into more open sun over a few weeks. Then plant them in the ground with a bunch of leaf and mulch they will grow like rockets.

Florida is a grower's heaven, the real Garden of Eden.
It grows a lot of weeds and bugs too. But the bamboo makes a beautiful change for sure. 👍

@@designstudio8013 Heat, fungus and bugs. Bugs that eat plants and human flesh everywhere. Mosquitos are nothing compared to the "sand fleas" or no-see-ums which are basically a set of tiny sharks jaws with microscopic wings hunting for any tender spot they can find.
@@designstudio8013 well in the 9B and beyond we have just one or two seasons and we work steady year round to make it. We have Fire season and Hurricane season here.

I wanted to see a simple bamboo propagation and now lmao.
I’ve added perlite with Mushroom compost. Its mid November & I’m keeping them (Big Blue) inside (Jacksonville, Fl 32226). Its pretty chilly this week so I’m keeping them inside & chasing the sun from window to window, got house’s heater on, & soil is damp. Sound ok? Just stuck them in 3 days ago. Ever used growth hormone? Thanks so much. Enjoying following the time lapse you’ve documented of this too. 👍
It's getting pretty cool here too. 58 over night and days in the 70's. I just started the last bunch of my D. Longinternodes seeds and the cool night on day two didn't seem to hinder them from sprouting. I had about 75% start that morning. I gave them a mass planting putting 22 in a 3 gal container. I put them inside until they poke up.
Your should love mushroom compost. They don't need any growth hormone. Worm tea and organic matter like leaves and wood chips make the best food. I use a lot of charcoal in the bigger pots. Mine just put up a couple big new shoots.

They did sprout and started to grow a little leaf but they got flooded so much they eventually drowned. If I would have planted them in the ground with all the rain we got they probably would be three feet tall by now if the rabbits and dogs didn't eat them.

@@philiplim2718 in Dec 2018 I had roots sprout within 4 days. Seems like that is the best time but I have no idea why yet.

Mosquitoes?? Buy mosquito doughnuts and put them in your tanks and tubs of water you are growing your plants in. Or dump all the water out and rinse very well to get mosquito eggs and larvae out of containers. You will have no more leg and ankle biters in the shade. Thanks for the video!
what is a mosquito doughnut ? We don't have those in Los Angeles.
@@motplease6841 If you can’t dump the water out. Home Depot has them. Bactimos briquets. Torpedo fish are another chemical with charcoal in it. They both last 30 days in water. But if you can dump it out do that instead and keep dry. No water no mosquitoes. Any man made thing that collects the smallest amount of water will breed. If it’s a standing body of water then you need chemical. If you have a pool or swamp you can buy gambusia minnows and release in the pool or swamp and they will keep the mosquito larvae and frog eggs eaten up and keep the pool clear of them both! As long as the chlorine is dead in the pool they will live a long time and breed if they need to. Fish are asexual so they change sex if they need to breed more.

Did the younger shoot in this video grow well?
I have dozens of massive new shoots (upwards to 8 inch in diameter) that grew ridiculously fast last year. It's a variant of Golden Green stripe bambusa, but it looks a bit different and grows much larger than it should.). But it grew so fast their size/weight made them break off about 20 feet up. And the new smaller ones all broke off about 15 feet up from the hurricanes we got this year. So, all of my newest shoots are now becoming massive bushes with huge branches coming off of them. So I'm considering propagating them.
But, from what I learned, the newer shoots usually don't propagate well.
The cuttings I planted last year are still a bit thinner (like a branch) but the new shoots coming off them (about 5 times each over the past year) are growing nicely, but easily stunted and broken off.
I've so many new bamboo now that I started giving the newer, smaller ones away on the side of my house lol.

New shoots need to get some leaves and start branching before they can be cloned. Sounds like you got some monster big ones.

It should as long as it has adequate water.

As soon as they start making some roots you can put them in some dirt. Don't move them into the sun right away they need to get some leaves growing first. Keep them moist.

@@Xray.71 I was told Buddha belly will sprout really easy... I couldn't get the piece I had to go. It needs a "happy" place with all the right light water and temp. If you had a good rainy season you could probably just throw them in the ground anywhere and they would just start growing the next day. But that isn't always the case. If you get roots you did great. Just take it slow.
@@seetheforest if you don’t have any I can hook you up. Same technique you showed the TH-cam world. Of all the pieces I cut sprouted after scraping but I’d say most….Some “sticks” that are in a bucket of water are still green and pushing out new leaves without any visible roots so that’s got my head scratchin’…… figure leave them in there until roots pop out or maybe etch a different section…. They’re all in the shade….

Yes. And if you are harvesting and cutting near the ground the saw works better because the walls are very thick and the tubing cutter takes a LOT of force to cut that nearly solid piece.

I found some clumping bamboo in my Florida backyard here in Suwannee Co.
Don't have time to wait for it to grow, so just cut off the tops & am using the
ends as punji sticks to keep the neighbors at bay.

When they start pumping out roots and they’re transferred by itself, do you add a fertilizer?
I add a little compost from my worm bin. I try not to ever use any chemical fertilizer.

Not sure but it could. I know other phylos like cubensis or Moso are runners and root and spread easily. You might try cutting a culm maybe 5 feet long or more and burry it a few inches under the ground. It could grow if it has enough even water and some shade. Don't over do anything. Keep it cool, moist but not wet, and no direct sun at first.
you dont fill the opebing with water? I saw some videos saying to fill the cane opening at top with water?
A little water will get in from rain. I dont know if I would fill it. Some people say that the top should stay open for air. I have seen a video from India where they put mud on the top and wrap it in plastic to keep it from drying out. I wrapped some plastic on a few of mine but can't say it helped.

@@nickkailey7682 Not sure I understand your question. This is how I make newly sprouted clones. I have planted these and they do well. It does take a season in the ground for them to get going but after that they grow like crazy. This bamboo is Bambusa Vulgaris and in a warm climate like Florida it does well. Different species may be harder or easier to sprout and I found these will sprout better in Nov when the temps go down into the 60's at night..
Running bamboos do better in cooler climates and you can't clone them like the tropical clumpers.
Hi im curious hows these bamboos now (July2023). Have they grown - taller and with plenty of shoots? Thank you for your video, this had served my reference to propagate.
They are 5 years old now and over 40 feet tall and almost 3" in diameter. They joined together and make a nearly solid hedge. They also protected the North end of the house in hurricane Ian last Sept 28. This year we have had little rain but they are starting to put up some new shoots..

@@obijuankenobi420 if they get rain they can do 30 feet a month. I have some now that just shot up 15 to 20 feet in the last few weeks with our late season rain.

The smaller bamboos that only gets about 20 feet tall like some black bamboos aren't as spectacular as the really big stuff that comes out of the ground the size of a human arm or leg. Sometimes you don't even notice them until they are 3 to 5 feet tall. Our late season rain is doing wonders after a super dry summer.

Best to get them in water as soon as they are cut but depending on the species they could survive. If they still have green and leaves on they could make it.
