I had a border collie for 12 wonderful years. He was amazing. He is not kidding about the amount of work you have to put into them but it is worth every second. I could communicate with mine very often with just a look. He is not kidding about the herding instinct either. Mine once broke away from me to herd a flock of Canadian Geese in the pond while he was swimming. It was truly one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. One of the geese wasn't having it but he hung in there until they all, 20 - 30 geese, followed him out of the pond, single file, through the lily pads like he was the pied piper. I haven't been able to get another dog since he passed 10 years ago however I think it is time. I don't think I could keep up with one now and it breaks my heart. I am going to try a Whippet and am going to meet one tomorrow. I came on here to learn about whippets but saw this video and couldn't resist. Brought a tear to my eye. If you have the energy and space I say go for it you won't regret it. If you don't try another breed it wouldn't be fair to them or you RIP Mighty Max the Snow Dog love you always

I have two collies as pets and not workong dogs and there still excellent companions. The secret I've found is to get there fetch and recall down. Then you can take them out for 40 minutes with a ball thrower and run then hard, burning off a lot of that energy without being out all day long.
Supplement with a 30 minute walk morning and evening and the occsssional play session in the house and lots of scratches and you end up with two very happy house pets.

Is having 2 a significant detail in this story? Id love a border collie, but am afraid I cannot keep it busy outdoors by myself more than 2-3h a day on average (some times much more than that but Im speaking on average), so I havent taken the risk so far. Would appreciate your opinion.
@@avery1716 not sure if you figured everything out, but for us, we had to teach fetch with lots of treats to build value in the activity. For chasing, we were taught to get the dog chasing you instead by running away. It took a few times, but she’s in the habit now and never runs away. Hope everything is going well with your pup!
@@avery1716we get our six month old border collie to come to us with his ball, say drop it and when he does we give him a treat we have been working on this for a couple of days and he seems pleased to please us and get a treat too!
One thing I never see mentioned is border collies are also excellent search dogs ..you can hide treats or balls round your house or garden give them a sniff of the object first and they will search out and find what you have hidden..this game really tires them out because its mental stimulation and the dog is non stop sniffing and searching and making decisions.
Not my border collie. I think she genuinely has no sense of smell.
My current BC is Rusty, a Red and White 2 yo boy. He is my third BC I'm raising from a pup, 29 years now. Every day I'm out, I can meet between 10/20 people who come up to us to meet him. Truthfully, I don't recommend them to most people because of exactly what you said 'You Have to Raise them.'
My last BC was Franklin, a beautiful Tri Color that i got from East Tennessee Border Collie Rescue in Knoxville, TN. After i saw his pic and saw the look in his eyes, I knew he was going to be a great one and the one for me. When I called, I said 'First off, I've had a BC and they are Awesome...I'm Amazed there's a group to rescue them as a Breed..' It got absolutely silent on the other end until finally she said '...Well to tell you the truth, they are smarter than many of their Owners...and That's where the Trouble starts...' 😂😂
Too many people have seen them in movies and commercials or meet them as they do mine and are taken by their Beauty and their Smiling Demeanor. So thanks for Strongly explaining the how much work they are. Especially if they won't be Working Dogs. All 3 of mine grew up in my recording studio here in Nashville TN, but I still RUN them At Least 2/3 hrs a day and they get to hang out with lots of people most days. Lots of real nice dogs around, but I can't imagine having any other Breed in my life. 😁👍
I have a 3 yr old border collie/ lab mix and she is very smart and is a very fast learner, she also loves to learn new things and is very treat and toy motivated. She has calmed down a lot now that she’s 3 yrs old, but once you take her out to play fetch, she’s the energizer bunny. She is a good dog, very affectionate.
Love it I have a border collie Zeke his father performs at the Kentucky State fair every year and has great blood lines but all he will ever have to do is be my best friend and keep me company these last few years of my life ❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏!
So long as you can give them a couple of walks a day and play time, collies are great!
My nana had a couple over the years and they were the best dogs ever. The family talk about her last dog bonnie often. Everyone in the neighbourhood knew her and loved her.

I have a border collie pup and one thing I would stress is ; " you had better have time for this animal or you will pay that price" . They can be very destructive when bored & boredom comes fast & frequently . I can't imagine a more loving , sweet animal but boy -o - boy ; sometimes she pushes all the buttons .
Border collies can be very hard work, and as fenrir points out in the video, its not all plain sailing.
Mines a rescue, he was 18 months when i picked him up and was almost completely shut down and very reactive, local trainers didnt want to know (mention rescue borders to them and watch the faces turn white in terror!). The first 12 months was extremely hard, as he would react with cars, bikes, kids, fireworks and thunder almost to the point of collapsing at some stages. then add on the fact hes like a child with adhd ... notices anything that has been moved in a room and then plays up.
whizz on 2 years and hes almost the perfect dog, and its all down to learning to understand why, and set the boundaries.
ive even given him a job, of pest controller on the local golf course, at first light we walk around and hes off herding rabbits, squirrels and foxes, dont worry hes never caught one!! but he sees it as his duty to herd them off the course, combine it with trips out to the local woods and hes alseep by 5pm most nights .... a tip for you! try not to take them to the same place all the time, vary your walks and get them to sniff everything and find them a playmate if possible.
Best breed bar none. My first ever dog was a collie and I found him so easy to train. I'm on my 3rd collie now, and I'll always have one. Most loyal friend you'll ever have.

i also am getting a collie as my first dog, and i’ve heard many people say that it’s not a great choice for first-time dog owners. did you find that it was difficult to adjust to that?
you mentioned that yours was quite easy to train, but was it a big step for you to have such an energetically demanding dog as your first dog?
@@van.sunshine I truly believe that a Collie is an excellent first time dog. The only thing is you have to be able to give it between 1 and 2 hours exercise a day and it must be nearly all off leash. If you don't have access to open fields and can only walk it on a leash then I wouldn't recommend one. They are the most loyal, devoted and rewarding breeds that you can possibly own and I can never have a different breed now, because of the Collie's intelligence and ease to train, all other dogs seem a bit unintelligent towards them. The opportunity to exercise them is all you need to provide and they will provide so so much more back to you. Best of luck!!!

Having a bc in an urban environment for the last four years has been very difficult.
Her penchant for chasing cars has not waned. Lots of hiking and throwing stuff keeps her in shape but I feel I'm failing her. Having recently become disabled due to blindness really makes it tough.
I used to take her to the park daily for exercise now I rely on someone else so it's only about three times a week. I try to compensate with lots of play in the house and my small yard. She has been very resilient and is the sweetest friend I could ask for.
Ive got 4 border collies as of now, and I agree completely agree with all you said ! great vid!
We just got home today with our border collie pup of 13 weeks. We waited until we were secure in life and kids were grown up before we began this journey. I plan on taking him to the frisbee golf course to get some good walking in.
Last year I bought my first Border Collie for more than 25 years. Yes, he requires a lot of attention & yes he was the runt of the litter. But, by country miles, he is a beautiful, most loving collie I had. He is so focused and attentive. We tried recently to take him, back to his birth place, to see his mother. We promised the farmer, we would ( Cumbria).

Her dogs are done after 15 minutes. Mine gets a second wind and will play for hours even as a puppy! Lol
Considering getting a border collie myself, my best friend just got one and I've been longing for a more active and bigger dog myself for a while now (I've grown up with dogs + I have a dog right now, a large 10 year old male jacairn terrier (jack russel x cairn)and I've been babysitting a quite unruly 1 year old male labradoodle) I really love doing agility and obedience training and altough the alaskan husky is my dream dog I think the border collie might be a better fit for myself

My bordercollie pup is 5 months old and yes, a LOT of work! We live countryside but no farm nor animals around 😂 And yes, it’s challenging to keep up with this energy level. We will definitely choose a sport like agility or treibball. I love him to bits but honestly, I’m not sure if I would choose again this breed. I’m not the youngest and even if I try my best to satisfy his breed specific needs, I have the feeling like it’s never enough

I’m just planing to get a border collie but I am getting afraid because in all the videos I have watched is said they have a great amount of energy.
In the past I have a Belgian Shepherd and she was never “upset”, I mean I have a big yard where the dog can run and play if I can’t take her for a walk.
But I can walk the dog twice a day for 30 minutes per time or play with her at night when I’m back from work.
During the weekend I would be there for her and take her outside the whole time.
I love this breed but I am feeling insecure if she fitted my lifestyle..
I wish I could get one, they've been my favourite breed for so damn long, but my parents will never let me :')

HI, I have a 6 year old male that I got at 8 weeks. I will be 70 myself soon and he is my best friend by far. I purchased an e-bike so I could keep up with him. We are in the country and there is a cement plant, gravel pits and an asphalt plant on our road. We bike 6-7 miles a day in 2 segments and about 1000 miles a year in our neighborhood. No leash,no collar and he is perfectly road trained and doesn't even flinch when two gravel trucks pass us going in opposite directions. My health is failing and my only real concern is that I won't outlive him. We are so attached at the hip I don't think he would ever be happy again if I passed before him. The smartest animal I have ever known!
@davidreinhardt5088 You're doing excellent exercising her but be careful, 4 months ago I was walking Roxy and slipped in a mudbowl breaking my ankle in 3 places fortunately my brother looked after her until I was fit enough, another time I was in a park rinsing my hand in the lake after bagging poop and ended up overbalancing and ended up in there, she's worth it though and also amazingly intelligent.
what are some other dog options that are similar to the border collie but maybe a little less energy. I am good with once the puppy can handle an 8 mile jog alongside my bike daily for exercise, amd training time. I either live in a fenced half acre yard or a little over an acre but no fence. Dog would be with me 24x7 I am technically disabled but not dead. I have heard the Aussie Sheep dog is a little more low key then the border collie.
Here’s some good options you should think of: Australian Shepherds, Rough Collie, English Springer spaniel, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling retriever and a brittany spaniel. They all have a bit less energy than a border collie and they are all very smart dogs like the border collie. The closest would be rough collie and australian shepherd but the others have a lot of similarities too. But if you want a dog that’s similar to a border collie activity wise but not as much energy, go get yourself a golden retriever. Extremely smart, active and playful. A lot more patient then a border collie and will show you as much love as they can give. I own a border collie at the moment and he’s an amazing dog but he’s soooo energetic. So go get yourself a golden retriever and you won’t regret it at all.

@@zillie8167 I ended up with a cavalier king charles spaniel who was the first born and has a good balance of running around and always ready to lay down and take a nap.
mine just attacked me, again, i’m sure i could a comment here from months ago, this is a smat dog, but she was turned into the humane soiety at 5 weeks, we adopted her at 5 weeks….i’ve done calm training, no yelling, or punishing….i was sitting on the floor, watching videos, but hadn’t thrown her ball, she not only nibbles, she barks and lunges, i know she’s trying to herd me…
i make her heel, she isn’t alowed to run out of the gate, or to go into or out of the house without release. so she has calm structure, i’m at odds.
obviously i’m not getting rid of her because i love her. at the moment i’ve removed all of her toys, and i’m in the chair….taken away things for her to herd. she also will not cuddle, so that and this behavior is not fun. she missed her early morning nap….this is usually when it happens.
i’m at a loss how to proceed, don’t want to send her away, i’m having zero interaction right now, she laid down and is sleeping.

@@FenrirCanineLeaders yes and no. She developed a habit early on with barking and biting and over time I noticed it’s when she’s tired, she’s trying to tell me she’s tired. I have my husband put a metal grate to block her from him,that’s an improvement so I don’t always have to discipline.
If I’m in the room when she does it to him, she comes to me and tries to do the nibbling but she knows I’ll grab her collar and tell her no, but lately putting her in a sit or lie down stops her…she does know “place” now, so I’ve been using that too when i know she’s tired, I used it this morning and she settled to sleep quickly. I have been saying are you tired? I’ve used nap since the beginning, want to nap as i put her in her crate, and good nap when she woke up, so now that seems to work too…Molly place….once there…yes. And then I’ll say, tired…nap….and she settles in.
This mostly happens in the early morning and at night, I can see her face and body change, she looks tired. One thing that has helped is watching the clock and getting her outside by 9:20 before it starts to hit her. If I get into my room by 9:45, I give her a treat when she climbs into her bed, I don’t put her in a stay, if she’s tired she lays down for the night.
As a working dog I believe she has to be told it’s ok to clock out and rest. I have used signals that tell her I’m not playing anymore, one is I stare at my Ipad, or sit at my work desk, or sit down to sew…those times I do not play.
99% of the time we play fetch, or tug, or go for a walk, then she eats…and sleep comes easy…but I give the signal I’m not playing (I also use a verbal cue, time out for play is finished.
It’s winter here so a walk at 5:30am, or 9:30pm is not possible…but I have fetch and tug worked out for inside…not as exhausting as running outside, but it’s movement…i play games where she has to think, all this is before her final pee and poo.
It’s all so much better than just a few months ago. I need to resume training quiet, that worked for my previous dog, then I taught him speak…and he’d then stop barking on command.
What has been the biggest hurdle is getting her to cuddle…but this week I read that some border collie females don’t like cuddling…but I think it’s because somewhere around 1.5yo I got too loud when she was biting, I didn’t think it was loud but I’ve learned how much she doesn’t like loud sounds…this was also around our 4th of July and this year it frightened her.
I’ve been working desensitizing her, when gets close, I taught her cuddle which means we snuggle faces, i started at her shoulders and i touch her, sometimes i use one hand and for a second i hug her, talking to her in a soothing voice…i see it getting better, but at this rate it will take awhile.
Currently I’m sitting on the floor, I’m on my ipad, so she knows I’m not going to play, something woke her, she got out of her bed, checked the window, came over with a ball, but i never looked up, she laid back down, she head is about 12” from my foot, so quite close…for her standards…so there is trust, but she has room to escape if needed. I’ve never hit this dog, I don’t hit my dogs, I make a correction but not anything that is too much because she has a soft temperment…I’m trying to correct with words, she loves games with instruction, she’s a BorderCollie/GSP, both these breeds take verbal instructions for herding and hunting…so a few months ago I leaned in on more verbal training, that seems like it’s when it started to get better.
This is a long post, I appreciate your interest, this is complicated so i felt giving a full answer. Wish I could find someone here to tweak these few behaviors.

Hey, non professional dog advice person here!
For actual advice, I'd suggest watching Zak George's series with Inertia. She is a border collie without a traditional job. Zak raises her from 8 weeks to adulthood and you can follow each step on the series.
Now onto my advice, they don't need to herd, just walk them the appropriate amount of time or do fetch or frisbee activities with your dog.
Then, all they'll need is mental stimulation, which I'm sure they'll get from learning service tasks (assuming you want them to help you with your health problems).

Considering your age I assume you are in school yet. If no one will be with the dog all day when you are in school then I would not recommend getting one until you have the time to devote to them. If left on their own they will become neurotic and no amount of exercise at the end of your day will negate that trait. Good Luck, they are a truly special breed!
The best home for a Border Collie is one that has lots of space for them to be able to exercise and work, as they need to be very active every day. Living in an apartment is not fair for them.
Can mental exercise be a (partial) substitute for physical exercise? I.e., if I provided 24/7 mental stimulation, would a Border Collie have less of a need to go on hour-long walks (or runs, bike rides, swims, etc)? I can't really find much information on this, but from what I've read, Border Collies appear to require something to do, making it seem like they wouldn't need as much physical exercise if they were occupied with things like puzzles and games. Is this true or am I drawing the wrong conclusion? I'm looking into getting a Border Collie myself. I've fallen in love with their looks, temperament, intelligence and everything else, but I'm not very fit so I'm not sure if I'd be able to provide several hours of physical exercise for a Border Collie. I just want to make the right decision, not impulsively get one and eventually rehome it because I can't properly care for it. Thanks in advance!
I'm not an expert but nobody has replied to your comment so far so I thought I'd try to help out. Border collies need both, put simply.
Dogs can typically only really be mentally stimulated when that initial edge of energy is taken off.
But even if you're not so fit, you won't have to do much of anything if you're throwing a ball or frisbee, for example.

@@zillie8167i like this reply…my border collie will arrive soon and ive been reading about this breed and they all said the same thing…it’s making me nervous but i really love this breed, i am a first time pet owner as well but I am choosing this dog despite all the warnings that this breed is not for first time owners because im so attracted to how they are…on top of that, this dog does not fit my lifestyle but since i am working from home and my work starts late in the afternoon too, I just think i may be able to find time for her…besides, I want to become active as well , im sure this breed can make me go out from my place as I am sa very homebud person…

Maybe a weird question, but... Am I wrong in assuming these dogs are like cats, but you can train them and their energy levels are basically opposites?
To clarify, I'm looking for a suitable Emotional Support Animal. With my depression, I have a tendency to dissociate and isolate. It's my least favorite thing. I've gained weight in recent years, leading to more depression over clothes not fitting anymore. I want to get out. Be active. Go on adventures!
I've mostly had cats. While some are great for affection, most are the "why are you touching me" kind. I like dogs, but... they seem less intelligent than cats and not much challenge. The more I learn about this breed, the more I think I may be finding the right dog to get me off my @$$ and moving. 🤣
Getting there. Went to PetCo, yesterday, and priced supplies. Toys are decently priced, but leads and food are going to kick my butt. 🤣

@Mr. Bee Pretty sure I'm already pushed over the edge. It's just a matter of finding one and getting over the initial cost hurdle. I've got a GoFundMe going, so we'll see what happens. $600 for a puppy is kind of steep.
@Mr. Bee The initial cost is what gets me, really. I'm one of those people that would be heavily impacted by a $400 emergency. There are so many organizations that help with service dogs but no one helps with an ESA. Maybe someday I can help change that but right now there's nothing. My therapist is convinced it would help me. I just can't afford the initial cost.
