    We have never played or watched football in my family. However, when we went to my dad's family-my uncles and grandpa would watch football, the cousins were all within 16 months in age so we would go out and play on their 52 acres in Central FL , often in shorts and t-shirts. The older women would be in the kitchen cooking. In my family, stuffing was "stuffed" into the bird and the dressing was placed in a bowl on the table as a "dressing"

    I live along the gulf coast in alabama and here in the south we call it dressing. I don’t think I ever hear the word stuffing until I was an adult. And our dressing is made with cornbread and some plain bread that is crumbled up together. Add sautéed onions, celery, seasonings and lots of chicken stock so it’s mushy. Then bake. My great grandmothers use to add oysters to theirs. One pan of plain dressing and one with oysters. My mom simplified the process by adding w onions and celery to her cornbread mix and then bake so it takes the step of sautéing out.

      I live in Tennessee, and ditto on "dressing" (not stuffing,) but we never add wheat bread to ours. Self-rising cornmeal already has wheat flour in it, and I like my dressing full-bodied and hearty.
      We make two skillet loaves and mix the dressing in a roasting pan. The next-day dressing with turkey from picking the bones mixed in, and a big dish of white gravy, is my favorite part of Thanksgiving. Even better than pies.

    I'm in the states (northern Maine on the border with Canada) and out family has taken to celebrating Thanksgiving during the Canadian Thanksgiving. There is still color out in the trees and no worries about snow or ice for those that have to travel and the temperatures are still fairly nice. By the end of Nov; the weather can be so iffy for driving; snow can be clashing with my pumpkin decor :{ So happy to have switched! What my grown kids do is have our family Tday now and make a Friendsgiving in Nov. so smart.

    Hello from the United States in the state of Alabama!! Yes, I'm very southern...everyone always knows where I'm from when I start talking...lol!! Our Thanksgiving meal is similar to ya'lls. I make dressing; my grandmother's recipe, made with cornbread instead of bread you use!!
    Have to season it with a lot of sage...that's what makes it delicious!! The day after Thanksgiving is shopping day, know as Black Friday here in the states!!
    We head out around 6:00am and shop all day getting most of our Christmas shopping done on that day!! The Saturday after Thanksgiving is Football Saturday in the South!! Relax, watch football, eat Thanksgiving left overs!! On Sunday we bring out the Christmas decorations and put up the tree & decorate everything...inside, outside, all through the house!! Monday is usually a day off work and school, so we just relax & sometimes do a little more shopping!!

    I’m refreshing my memory on freezing Thanksgiving side dishes. I’m a bit older and was never a fan of freezing cooked meals but it will be much easier for me to make these sides ahead of time. We always called it stuffing and I think dressing comes from the South, where they probably got it from the British. I do my Grandmother’s stuffing, which my Mom made too. It kind of has an Italian flair to it since she was from Italy. She always added ground veal, not sausage, and boiled, chopped gizzard I believe it was and it was sure tasty. My Mom still used the gizzard but I dropped it. Funny but my daughter likes it. You girls are a pleasure to watch. Happy Belated Thanksgiving.

    When I was a child, the kids would be in the yard playing football and running around. Mom's in the kitchen along with the aunties and Grandma cooking; Dad and the uncles are in the living room watching the football games. Then dinner, everyone would gather around the table and say what they're grateful for. THEN, it's chow down time!! 😋😋
    I'M AN AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN BORN IN THE STATE OF TEXAS; WE HAVE ALWAYS CALLED IT DRESSING! OVER THE YEARS, THERE HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT VARIATIONS.
    THE NEW ORLEANS BRANCH OF THE FAMILY ADDS OYSTERS WHILE THE TEXAS BRANCH DOES NOT!!

    Football for sure. Sweet Potatoes vs Yams; Although they are both root vegetables, they belong to two different plant families-the sweet potato is from the morning glory family while the yam is related to the lily. Yams are starchier and less sweet than the sweet potato and can grow much larger. My point of view for what it’s worth lol. Love your recipes.

      This is true, and many people, including companies that make canned "yams", incorrectly use the term yams to describe both vegetables. Sweet potatoes are the orange fleshed ones. North Carolina (where I live) is the largest producer of sweet potatoes in the US. We love em. :)

LOL. we had the yams ( marshmallows) . but mainly it was turkey and ham with mashed potatoes and gravy and corn from my sister's garden. we had blueberry muffins for rolls. and a fruit salad my grandma made with mayo. If it is inside the bird it is stuffing, and if not then it's dressing. If not stuffing the bird my dad would make a pouch from tin foil and put the dressing in it and put it in the roaster with the bird. Growing up our dressing/stuffing never had bread in it. It was mashed potatoes, diced onion,a bit of butter, and summer savory. I'm in Nova Scotia.

    Every year I want to freeze the dishes ahead of time but now my oldest does the meal but i do our traditional family stuffing. Our stuffing was made by my Italian grandmother with an Italian twist and was always stuffed in the bird. Since I’m a bit older it will be easier for me to do ahead of time. It’s called stuffing in my area, I believe it’s dressing in the South. We do football and there are big parades in some major cities, including Philadelphia near where I live and of course, shopping. Nowadays, Black Friday is done more online and I see they are even moving it up more every year. Crazy. You did a good job on the Green Bean casserole. My youngest daughter introduced us to the dish a number of years ago. I hate it and wonder where it came from and why is it so popular. Found it’s way to Canada too. Our creamed corn is usually crushed up and smooth, a throwback to the Native Americans. Until the internet, I did not know about Canadian Thanksgiving. Happy Thanksgiving, Canada.

  • @MelissaThompson432

    If you can buy it in the US or Canada, regardless of what the label says, a sweet potato and a yam are exactly the same thing.
    In fact, as far as I can tell, in Asian and African dishes "yam" often means cassava.

    I always thought dressing was a moister version of the side dish and stuffing was a crispier version. 🤷‍♀ When I make it I call it stuffing and I make my bread cubes small like Stove Top stuffing because my mom didn't have a recipe, she made Stove Top. My green bean casserole has both Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce and I love it. I love sweet potatoes with sumac, za'atar, and seasoned salt... sweet and savory at the same time but without heat (I'm a wuss with spicy foods). We make sweet potato rolls too. And I have a killer sweet potato brownie dessert made with a can of yams, a box of white cake mix, sweetened condensed milk, sugar, and butter. So yummy!!! Growing up the tradition was to watch the Macy's day parade but as an adult I don't watch tv anymore. My hubby uses all the time off to tackle some big project and just yesterday declared that he was debating what this year's Thanksgiving Project would be. Last year's project was building a chicken coop. For the record, I can't stand the whole Black Friday thing for so many reasons. Some stores are even open Thanksgiving night. Its a shame that Christmas became so commercialized. I feel like Thanksgiving weekend has been ruined because of it. That said, I do like to kick out my online shopping that weekend with all the sales, so I'm partially to blame. I wish US companies would take orders with the understanding that they are closed til the following Monday and orders will be processed then. That way no one has to work those days in retail.

    • @FreezerMeals101
      @FreezerMeals101  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are some great yam ideas! I'd be interested in trying that dessert! I also like the idea of the Thanksgiving Project. It's a great way to spend time! Black Friday in Canada is a thing, but the deals aren't as amazing as they are in the US and we don't see the huge line ups and ferocious shoppers like they show on TV. It's pretty calm here. I agree that the online deals do make it nice to do Christmas shopping. Everything is going up in price so you have to catch a break where you can! Thanks for watching!!

    I made the corn recipe for thanksgiving. It was not good. The corn had a weird texture and all we could taste was the cream cheese.

    Oh ladies, you are so missing out on some good flavor. Here in the south of USA we like to use cornbread. White bread. Really?🤢

      Christie here: I would be very interested to try that. I'm curious to know what it would be like because cornbread is quite sweet. Well, at least the cornbread I've had has been sweet. It would totally change the stuffing. At first I thought: Ew. Sweet stuffing. LOL. But then I thought it would be nice to try!
      The white bread stuffing here is very simple but still tasty. I wanted to show that anyone can make stuffing with as little ingredients as possible but there are many other options! Today our family will have a ground beef stuffing made by my mother-in-law. I've had it before and it's not my favourite but it's just another take on stuffing. She has another one that uses chopped garlic sausage in it and it's very nice too. Maybe I'll pop by for your thanksgiving and try the cornbread stuffing! ;-)

      Hi Christie! I know what you mean about the sweet cornbread. I personally don't like it, so I usually leave the sugar out or put just the tiniest bit in my cornbread. The mixes you buy can be too sweet, but there are brands here in TX, such as the Texas Brand that aren't too bad. You really should try it. It is so good. Btw, this was the first video of yours that I watched. Y'all are just too cute! God Bless you

      @@phyllislandry6401 that is how I try to do it for the holidays. Cuts a lot if work time on the day of. Do you like your cornbread sweet? If my grown son had his way, the top would be covered in butter and sprinkled with white sugar as soon as it comes out of the oven. He's a diabetic, so needless to say he doesn't get his way!

      @@FreezerMeals101The Southern Dressing I fell in love with in Texas was made with ‘Southern Cornbread’ which has no sugar in it. I am from the Midwest and grew up eating ‘Northern Cornbread’ which has sugar in it. I made the mistake of using my ‘Northern Cornbread’ in my cornbread dressing ONLY once…the sugar made it inedible to us. My Texas Bread Recipe uses 1/2 Southern Cornbread and 1/2 dried bread cubes…delicious.

    Oh no! The bottom sludge of American cooking... green bean casserole. Where each individual ingredient is great and comes together in a thoroughly gross combination.

    It is supposed not good to stuff a Turkey.

    • @FreezerMeals101
      @FreezerMeals101  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's gone out of fashion a bit. The turkey takes longer to cook when it's stuffed, therefore you can overcook the meat, or undercook the stuffing, making it possibly dangerous to eat if it hasn't come to at least 165°. It's purpose is to help season the turkey, but you can add the spices on your own and cook the stuffing separately and still have the best of both. I think there are still a lot of people out there who still stuff their turkeys and as long as it's done safely, they can go right ahead. Cheers!
