- Rosalina is the newest Mario princess, and yet her voice has been super inconsistent! Over the course of a handful of years, Rosalina had 3 different voice actors! So why does Nintendo keep changing her voice? Why doesn't this Mario character sound like she used to?!

Personally, I like galaxy Rosalina’s voice the best. She’s designed to be this calm and spiritual space princess and her voice in that game fits perfectly. It just doesn’t feel right that Rosalina has a more energetic personality in newer games when she was never designed to be that way so her newer voices just don’t fit her imo. No hate towards those voice actresses but I prefer the old one
Yes! Her old voice matched everything that made galaxy so great- and it really set her apart from Peach and Daisy.
don’t forget that in Mario Galaxy her voice had a very noticeable echo to it

I kinda like the first one because it's a very distinctive voice. We had Peach as the happy, cheerful, carefree princess; Daisy as the strong, no nonsense, energetic princess and Rosalina as the motherly, calm and otherworldly princess.
The newer one, while it stills retains some semblance of her maturity, steps a bit into Peach's territory with the bounciness and excitement. It makes me feel nostalgic of the original, warm, maternal voice.
I have few things to say:
1. Even back in Mario Kart Wii, her voice actress Mercedes Rose was credited as "Mercedez Rose". Honestly it feelt like a curse that her voice actress' name was either misspelled or a completely wrong one AND misspelled. 😂
2. I believe the reason Kerri Kane's voice clips are used in Smash to this day is because Rosalina in that game is still based on her more calm and mature appearance from Super Mario Galaxy and during the 3DS era Rosalina was still portrayed in such manner until Wii U era arrived and she became more upbeat and playful. Btw Kerri Kane also voiced Rosalina in Mario Kart Arcade GP DX and we got to hear few lines that weren't ever used before!
3. Rosalina used to be my all-time favorite Mario character until Laura Faye Smith came along voicing the character. This is no hate towards her: she's a wonderful person and a great voice actress, but during 3D World, to me, Rosalina became a shadow of her formerself. I personally don't like her new upbeat personality though I do understand Nintendo wants to go this way since she's a character in a video game series mostly marketed towards children and families and the characters need to be more upbeat and colorful in order to appeal to most of those audiences.
Also one thing to note is since LFS started voicing Rosalina, the echo effect from her voice has disappeared.
Ps. I'm so happy you finally made this video! I knew the interesting story behind her voice and the women behind it, but finally someone talking about it on youtube is great.
So my favorite Rosalina voice actress is Mercedes Rose as I've followed her career a little (she has starred in few commercials and in a youtube series by her daughter, Paige McKenzie called "Haunting of Sunshine Girl") and it is very interesting, but I love Rosalina's voice by Kerri Kane ❤
You put it into words so well! It feels like they kinda painted over her characterization in the Galaxy, and now she kinda only feels like Rosalina in the sense of her model in newer games.
Kinda feels like another character cosplaying as her, almost. Always happy to have her in spinoffs! I just wish she was a biiiit closer to her original self, yknow?
It feels like Nintendo is afraid of her feeling like a somber character, but even in MK Wii that never really felt like the case to me. :]

BTW, my favorite of these actresses is Mercedes Rose. She's the only one who gave Rosalina real depth IMO.
as someone who always gets their names spelled wrong, and it's especially heartbreaking when it's something important and permanent, I would be absolutely heartbroken if I achieved the dream of being in a Nintendo game and my name was spelled wrong in the credits...
For what it's worth, it was spelled correctly in Mario Kart 7 and many games afterwards.
it was Mario Party 10, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash and Mario & Sonic at the 2016 Olympics where the "Kerry" misspelling came from and those didn't feature her voice at all.
@@Robbie_Haruna On the other hand, her name is *still* misspelled as "Kerry Kane" even in Smash Ultimate (a game which features her voice), despite it being spelled correctly in Smash 4.
Also it's so sad that Laura does the voice, and she doesn't even get the credit for it.

I love how all her voice actors reflect on her character development. She’s slowly coming out of her shell and meeting new people, Being introduced to new things, And genuinely becoming more happier. It may not be the most obvious character development but it’s enough to really appreciate her character over the years.
It's interesting to hear so many perspectives on a character like this.
While I may not like the voice change in MK8 for the higher pitch, some others really enjoy it, and think it shows possible character development.
For a surprising number of people, the third actress is representative of Rosalina for them-- and it's kind of a fun discussion if you ask me

My personal headcanon is that in each game she gets more energetic and is more open in her personality as apposed to just swapping VA's. It honestly makes the most sense for me as she was more open with Mario in her first game and ever sense then she embraced who she truly is.
My favourite Rosalina is the most recent one, because it's the one I grew up with.
I do like the original Mercedes Rose the most, simply because it's fits the original concept of her character. But I can appreciate the work for the other 2 as well. Plus, if you use the description Thomas gave in the end, you can call it...
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!!!
When we first meet her, she's still burdened by her past, and the whole Bowser thing just makes it worse. But after Galaxy 1 and 2, she goes off with Mario and friends to play different party games. It's then when we see her begin to cheer up, and become hopeful that there are better times to look forward too. And then, she finally gives way knowing that there are friends that not only care for her, but can have lots if fun with. Giving her thaf energetic and bouncy voice.
Mercedes Rose is my personal favorite, because she has the essence of the character, og rosalina was very calm, brave, wise, more mature, and the voice plus had a reverb effect to give her more mysterious sound.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who prefers her original voice actor. :/ I got use to her new voice now but I wish it at least had that echo effect. It's like because she spent more time with Mario her outer space presence wore off or something :(

My personal list is Mercedes, Laura, then Kerri. None have been bad tho!
Mercedes captured her powerful, solemn nature. She sounds reserved, but was still capable of showing excitement at her own way. And I LOVE the echo/reverb in with her voice.
Laura does sound a little similar to Peach, but I think she has a solid voice/range. I do wish they would tone her back a little, but I think she sounds like a mom having fun 😂❤
Kerri kinda got the worst of both ends. The higher pitch to her voice and super echo effect makes her sound ditzy to me. Like she isn’t QUITE sure where she is 😭💀

Rosalina smiles and sounds full of hope, despite her character story and what she does as a result of it. Makes her very memorable despite being a novelty character.
Mercedes Rose is still my preferred voice of Rosalina. She gave Rosalina a true distinction from the original 2 princesses, but as the games continue, the less distinguished both Rosalina and her voice become. No disrespect to the other 2 voice actresses.

The first and last voice actors I like the same amount but I feel like the second one is a little too energetic to the point where I feel like it doesn’t fit her personality enough

Rosalina can't be quirky. Thats just how she feels. Elegant, graceful, and wisdom are strengths and she feels like a real person. Smash and Mario kart make sense for her to be a bit more energetic but the other games just make her feel watered down. It just feels like Nintendo is making their characters feel 'one size fits all'
Mercedes Rose is my favorite, I prefer her calm voice in Galaxy and Mario Kart Wii.
not ganna lie the first voice is my favorite. it wan't my first, but Nintendo took a different direction with Rosalina as a character in that game and I like that. we don't see to many deep emotions in Mario games.

I can’t believe Nintendo would make rookie mistakes like that. I hope Laura and Kerri don’t take it too hard.
I'd argue that Galaxy's Rosalina is stoic, poised, and mature rather than solemn, lonely, and emotionless. I prefer this over her other voices because it made Rosalina stand out among all other princesses in the franchise - and I would argue princesses in modern media in general - which tend to be peppy and energetic. She offered players a new kind of character to resonate with (me for example), but that priceless character of hers was lost by her new voices and demeanor, along with many fans' connections with Rosalina. Her Galaxy voice and demeanor will always be the best and truest; I think Kerri Kane's voice stayed pretty true to Mercedes Rose's voice, but I am not a fan of Rosalina with Laura Faye Smith's voice. It simply is not Rosalina. I understand that she may have "warmed up" by being with Mario and friends, but I would argue she has always been warm. Her mannerisms convey that she knows who she is and accepts herself as she is; there is no reason for her to act differently and change how she expresses her joy in order to be more "likeable" for fans.
Well said man. I relate to the last part since I had this one online argument years ago where I mentioned how I don't like the way Rosalina act in party games, but no matter what I kept getting bombarted with the same "don't you want her to open up and have fun?" argument like Jesus Christ. How can you NOT see it as a marketing strategy to over-promote her and make her appealing to "everyone", which ironically made her lose her original appeal in the first place? Istg too much attention has harmed her. Her Galaxy depiction is the only version of Rose that I like and I hate that I will never see it ever again.

While they all definitely sound different, they're also similar enough that I don't really have a preference. I was actually surprised at first to learn that she's had different voice actors, I thought it was the same girl evolving her voice!
I prefer her first voice. But I don mind it when the others sound like it in Smash. I kinda really don’t like how she sounds in Mario Kart 8. As she lost the echo, and while I don’t mind the personality change, (as long if a game could establish why she changed her personality maybe), the way the voice sounds and its tone is a little off for me. Since it strays to far from her original voice. I’m an 3 to try keeping the same voice for a character as much as possible. Unless we are in a different continuity.
Like, it’s fine to have some changes, but I prefer the voice to still sound as realistically close to the original as possible. We can have slight changes if it fits the context of the story or change of the character. But no Ryan Sonic to Jason Sonic to Roger Sonic.
The spinoff games mix and match old voice clips so much that they're probably all developed using the same libraries for a while before they update them to a new voice. Like Camelot games were still using DK64 clips for DK and Diddy on the 3DS lol
I think it's just more noticeable when it's a voice actor for a human character than someone like Yoshi or DK who we've heard have many different voices (and even just SFX with no voice acting). DK has used stock chimpanzee sounds (N64 Mario spinoffs), realistic gorilla grunts (Smash), voiced words by a voice actor (DK64 and the GCN Mario spinoffs mostly), and his current voice that's more of a combination of real words and gorilla/monkey sounds. Not to mention Diddy having a completely different voice in the Retro DKC games than he does anywhere else.

Rose is the voice for the character. She is the character in my opinion. Galaxy is the best mario title in my opinion. Smith seems to be a blind of the previous two actresses.

I would personally say that I like the Mario Galaxy voice the most… it just fits Rosalina’s character the best, and it has the most noticeable echo effect to it which just makes it all the more impactful

However the actual actresses do an excellent job at what they've been directed to do, and it just comes down to my taste Vs what Nintendo wants nowadays
Unrelated about Laura Faye Smith but she has wonderful penmanship; when I met her at a convention and asked her to sign my Rosalina amiibo, she was able to sign her name in very clear cursive on that tiny amiibo base and even drew a little Luma.
Also she's a very nice and plesant lady.

my headcanon? as she spent more time in the mushroom kingdom and visited earth more often than she used to, Peach and Daisy's bubbly personalities rubbed off on Rosalina, thus breaking her out of her shell more and making her voice more peppy :)

For real, I loved how it worked in the story and atmosphere. I can kind of get them wanting to replace with a more peppy performance, and I think if Kerri Kane never moved, she would still have it. Laura Faye sounds like a nice person and her voice is fine unfiltered....but it just doesn't feel iconic and otherwordly. I think Nintendo just wants brand cohesion lol

the only issue i have is that they removed the echo from her voice. as a sad and lonely space princess the echo made so much sense 😞

She was the only calm and collected princess. After my Wii broke I was never able to play mario galaxy again. Remembering her sad story mad me cry. 😢. She is my absolute favorite princess. 😞😞
