No matter how far the farming technologies have come including tractors that can be programmed to do the job without manpower, so much depends on the weather to be successful. Thank God for farmers for we all need them to survive! Love this song, this artist, and this reaction!❤😊

BS! Maybe back in the 80’s, he changed and became a celebrity and turncoat to his mid west values. He gave concerts supporting Obama and Hillary Clinton who mocked and screwed over middle America! Doesn’t he know they considered him a deplorable and red neck clutching his bible and gun? He’s a total fraud and sell out to the US!!

My grandfather's 1200 acre farm now has a huge Wal-Mart on it, along with a paved road and a couple fast food shops. It was heartbreaking to see this strong, life-long farmer with a 6th grade education break down. Farming was all he knew! That land had been in my family going back to the late 1700's. Unfortunately, the Farm Aid movement came too late for him, but it has helped many keep their land and continues to do so. Support your local farmers!

Thanks for a great review guys! Growing up on a corn farm in Iowa, this song has always struck hard. Every line could be from my biography. My parents held onto the farm until I graduated in 86, then had to sell out (just like most of our neighbors). Farming is a business where you have no control over your cost of production or your sale price. You just have to do the best you can and pray you make it through one season to start the next. Farming is also a lifestyle that gets in your blood and is hard to turn from. 40 years later, I'm not growing corn but raising cows instead.

“The crops we grew last summer weren't enough to pay the loans
Couldn't buy the seed to plant this spring and the farmers bank foreclosed
They called my old friend Schepman up to auction off the land
He said ‘John its just my job and I hope you understand’
Hey calling it your job ol hoss sure dont make it right
But if you want me to I’ll say a prayer for your soul tonight…”
The government screwed him over, now he’s bankrupt. THEN they called his friend (Schepman) to auction the land for pennies on the dollar. What great line.

Here in the states the large family farm is almost a thing of the past. Corporations have consolidated their control over agribusiness. They are now moving on to housing. One economist calls it technofeudalism. We're going backwards not forward.

I have lived my entire 55 years in one spot. As a kid I was country. We were surrounded by 2 lane country black tops and dirt roads. Nothing but forest and farm land. But now.... the land is covered with housing complex's and large neighborhoods. My own Grandfathers farm is now a neighborhood. There isn't anything left of my childhood growing up on that farm. They even cut down the 3 HUGE oak tree's I once played under. Every day it seems another section of land is cleared for construction and it tears my heart out to watch it happen. They call it progress. And depending upon your goal I guess it is for some people. Particularly the politicians and developers. But for those of us who have worked this land for generations it's like a part of you has died. I use to enjoy summer evening rides after dinner on the backroads. Windows down as I hear the cicadas and see the sun setting through the tree's and over the fields of corn. I no longer take those rides because it's too upsetting to see what's become of the area.

The agenda is to force private farms out of business and to transfer the farmland to giant agriculture corporations. Control the land, control the food, control the people. John Mellencamp is among my favorite artists, so talented, and so many of his songs have real substance to them. He has a fun side, also, and I urge you to explore that side of him. When you feel like dancing barefoot in each other's arms, check out "KEY WEST INTERMEZZO (I SAW YOU FIRST)" th-cam.com/video/RlMPYwGWLcI/w-d-xo.html , and if you're just in the mood for a nice, upbeat groove, listen to his cover of "WILD NIGHT" th-cam.com/video/1nPPRQeTxTY/w-d-xo.html . Not sure if you've heard of it, but in 1985, John and country legend Willie Nelson organized an annual benefit concert, that still happens today, called Farm-aid, to help wherever they can in the USA. Here, the government & corporations are edging the farmer out of business on a major scale. Generations of farming families have lost their livelihood AND LOST THEIR LAND, that had been in their family for generations.

Young person trying to start out as a farmer today. $2,000 - 4000 and acre. You need 1,000 acres to keep up, so $4,000,000 input just to own land. Another $4 million in equipment. And ever 5-10 years have to buy equipment to replace what you had. Farmers are still working from start to the end of their lives to pay it off in the hopes MAYBE they can pass it on to a child that wants to farm. Which, oh right their kid will have to pay a huge tax on when they inherit it. They never get any of that back. It is all sunk cost. Why you see so many farmers working til they are 70-80 years old.
The only way my father's farm was paid off was him dying and my mom collecting life insurance to pay off the debt.

In 2022, the median wealth of a US farm household was $1,376,404, while households that operated commercial farms had a median wealth of $3.5 million. This is significantly more than non-farming families, with commercial farmers having a median net worth that is 23x the median American family net worth.
Obviously this video is 38 years old but farmers take off of hard working Americans, they are given billions in subsidies they don't even need. At least 10,000 farmers took over $11B in farm subsidies over 39 consecutive years.
Under Trump, Farm Subsidies Soared and the Rich Got Richer. Subsidy payments to farmers ballooned from just over $4 billion in 2017 to more than $20 billion in 2020 - driven largely by ad hoc programs meant to offset the effects of President Trump’s failed trade war with China.

It has been happening all across North America Andrei and Domenika for decades now. Politicians just want cheaper food so they can gain votes from city dwellers. Politicians who have likely never worked hard 14 or 16 hour days for many years on end just to try to make ends meet like farmers and ranchers do. It is little wonder we have such leaders who are completely divorced from reality. In Canada we have a prime minister who was born a multi-multi millionaire who knows nothing even of a working life, having only ever been a replacement drama teacher. And now we are relying on a man and his colleagues who have never had any connection with real working people, and this country has never been in worse shape because of them. They are simply indifferent to the destruction they are creating all around them because of their corruption. They have their own fat salaries and millions stashed away. Yes, it makes thinking people angry! 🤨🤷😡

My family's farm was given as a land grant for his service in the Revolutionary War by Continental Congress in 1780 to my grandfather 8 generations back . For 8 generations we owned and farmed that land until the TVA built a dam on the river and put our entire farm at the bottom of a lake . .They government used their " eminent domain " law to FORCE us to sell them our land AT THEIR PRICE . That land had been in the family for EIGHT generations . We were the only ones to EVER own that land .That is PART of why I trust the government in everything they do and want to give them even more power ( yeah right ) Incidentally , I have been growing an all organic vegetable garden on MY land for more than 50 years , no chemical fertilizer,no pesticides , no herbicides , no hybrids or GMO plants . I compost lawn clippings, leaves , and al bio-degradable kitchen waste by feeding it to my worms and when they are done , I spread the compost with the worm castings on the garden for fertilizer . I am currently growing tomatoes, snow peas, green beans , yellow beans ,3 varieties of peppers , Swiss chard, cucumbers , garlic , beets , and carrots . All of them taste MUCH better than the vegetables one buys at the store and they are much healthier to eat

This song was profound then and even more so today. Farms and ranches going under and suburban encroachment taking over. Ugly neighborhoods, more traffic gridlock, and big box stores running the local business owners out. Progress is just another way of saying higher taxes and massive strain on natural resources, along with an uptick in crime. I want to buy my food from the U.S. farms and ranches then from a foreign farmer! God Bless the small family farmers and ranchers and a big stinker look to the corporate growers and raisers who are helping, along with our government, destroying a great way to live and raise families. Just my take on this! Put OUR PEOPLE back to work and stop this global bullshit for cheaper labor and high corporate profits that only the CEO's are enjoying!
