Long Intros, multiple tempo changes, multiple instrumental solos, multiple instruments used, drums, guitars, keyboards, horns, strings/violins, great vocals and lyrics, Great LIVE SHOWS. We call this style of music.... Classic Rock, and it's many variations.
John Mellencamp is from Indiana, he's pretty big here and is from the Bloomington area, I believe. I love most of his music, this is one of my favorites. "Jack and Diane" is a good one also, "Pink Houses", "Wild Nights", "Authority Song", etc...! Definitely a rabbit hole worth going down.
One might say John Mellencamp is the quintessential All American Rocker from the middle of America. All the necessary elements to make some great Classic Rock. Try his 'Little Pink Houses" next on his list.
I was at that one too...amazing show! When he sang the chorus on Jack and Diane you could hear everyone singing along. That was the biggest concert of that summer. Too bad Heart couldn't compare to JCM.... half the crowd ended up leaving partway through their set (including me!)
"I Need A Lover" was the first John Mellencamp song I remember hearing on the radio, way back when. That's when he went by the stage name John Cougar. That introduction is quite spectacular, evoking the wall of sound tableau Bruce Springsteen perfected, right down to the piano licks and the backing vocal harmonies. The instrumentals are top notch. Pat Benatar covered the song on one of her early albums. I saw him open for Heart in 1981 or thereabouts. He was great live. Mellencamp's later work turned his songs towards less elaborate arrangements, "Hurt So Good", for example, was a gigantic hit for him a year or two later, followed by "Jack & Diane". But it was his 1983 album, Uh-huh, that turned him into a top tier rock star, placing three singles in the top-forty -- "Pink Houses", "Crumblin' Down", and "Authority Song". And his 1985 follow up album, Scarecrow, placed three singles in the top-ten -- "Small Town", "Lonely Ol' Night", and "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.". Good stuff.
John said the long intro happened because back when they were recording this he & the band were real young, just starting out. They didn’t know how to transition from intro to the first verse so they just kept playing until it felt right. lol
nice commentary about the meaning of the song. maybe the lover also wanted the wham bam, thank you man too? Haha. Great song, always loved it. And yes on that intro!
This song is tied with Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns by Mother Love Bone as my most favorite songs of all songs!! 😊 I am SO enjoying your reactions and the songs you've chosen. Much love! ❤
He went from being John Mellencamp, then... John Cougar, then... John Cougar Mellencamp, then back to John Mellencamp early in his career. We all knew who he was/is now.
If you want another "bad attitiude" song from John Mellencamp, try the "Authority Song." Musically, mostly a straight up rockabilly number, but great "f*** the man" lyrics.
The old Houston Apollos of the CHL used this as their pregame intro music while taking their hot laps. One player in particular, Alex Tidey, would be first on the ice and just ripped through his laps almost in time with the music.
@@johntarnowski9086 Benatar's version is a cover , Mellencamp is the songwriter and the song was first released by him in 1978 on the album A Biography when he was going by the name Johnny Cougar. It was not released in the U. S.. In 1979 it was released on his album titled John Cougar. The song was covered and released as the debut single in 1979 by Pat Benatar for her album In The Heat Of The Night.
Just a straight ahead rock banger. I always thought that the macho rock persona he had in this is just bravado designed to cover up his insecurities and whatnot but who really cares? The song kicks butt and even though he has many, many great songs in his catalogue, this one always hit me the hardest.
Loved your comments on this, JM. I have a daughter and 2 daughters in-law. I’m not sure what got into JM putting this song out. His catalog is good. I’m 64. As young men we were encouraged to write this kind of thing as a letter, to never send it, and eventually burn it. That would have been good advice for JM. Hey-you have the same initials!
Would live if one day you could react to his song paper in fire or maybe do tom petty's American girl You have so many great artists in your playlists with so many great songs from them that are awesome
“Ain’t Even Done with the Night”, “R.O.C.K. in the USA” and “Pink Houses” are excellent.
His concerts were so much fun, everyone dancing. His dancers were crazy good!!!
One of the greatest instrumental intros in Rock n Roll.
I love this song because of the killer intro!
A jaw-dropping musical masterpiece.
John Mellencamp has a big catalog, many hits to discover. ✌🏽

John was my first music obsession ❤😊 Pink Houses is my favorite video because I think it captures what he is conveying in his music ❤😊
Saw him as Cougar, amazing live!!
His greatest hits album could be a concert!
I saw him when he was John Cougar opening for Heart. He put on an amazing show.

John has a big catalog of hits...it would be worth the dive
Love John's music. To me it's like small town rockabilly style. He cares deeply for small town living.
I really like JMBoys' review and comments. He hit the nail on the head. Song is awesome and the intro outstanding.

And now the intro drives you crazy
Saw him do a his in concert twice. Excellent show.

Aint even done with the night!!!@
He released this song when he was called John Cougar. I think the execs didn't like his real last name "Mellencamp."
This is by far his most underrated song. Thanks for review what no one lese will!
Saw John cougar saw John cougar Mellencamp saw John Mellencamp. 1978 1986 1987. Texas.

If you travel south from Indianapolis you will hit Seymour...and there is a stretch of interstate dedicated to John Mellencamp! (His hometown)

Great American singer songwriter
This is my favorite John Mellencamp song. This was also very respectably covered by Pat Benatar. Check out her version too.
Not covered. They had the same management and they both were given the song and released nearly the same time

Pat Benatar did a great cover of this song a year after John released it. He's got a lot of good songs.
Check out Scarecrow

I always thought he had the best American band in the 80s.
Now do Pat Benetars version. They were released close together
Thought it was an instrumental, didnt you ?
