My father played for the AFL and NFL and when he died last year, we sent his brain to the Boston University study for CTE as per his request prior to his death. We found out last month that he had stage 4 of CTE - the highest level of traumatic brain injury he could have due to his playing days. It was a shock to us, since he didn't display (or hid) most of his symptoms. CTE is a HUGE factor in this tragedy, I'm sure. Prayers to the families devastated by their loss.

I'm sorry for your pain. I hope you have lighter days and less heavy ones ahead. I know it isn't easy having someone taken away in any way from our routine lives. Your response made me think of Aaron Hernandez's story. So sad. CTE is an unseen ghost. I wonder how many players have passed away and not had their brains studied. It's deeper than we know yet. Again, hugs 🌺🤘

So sorry for the loss of your father . I respect him so much for allowing his brain to be studied.
I suffered 2 concussions as a child one the brain swelling was so much I was blind for 5 days. As a mother I didn't allow my son's to play football. Luckily after I explained why , they chose sports with less chance of brain injury.

I immediately wanted to know about his head injuries playing for the NFL. Also, I want to know if he had suffered a head injury or a fall resulting in a head injury as a child.
My brother at the age of 4 was hit by a car and suffered paralysis on one side. He never lost consciousness, but his vibrant personality changed. He became paranoid, easily agitated, and had difficulty learning when he was already reading prior to the accident. Later in life he had difficulty relating to people and working with others. Doctors ignored his condition for decades because he never went unconsciousness during the accident. I was always afraid for years he would commit a mass shooting. But finally he found a doctor who listened, diagnosed him and put him on Lithium. He immediately felt, as he put it. "Normal ". He then went to dozens of people in many states apologizing for his years of bad behavior became he didn't know what it was like to feel normal. My brother is my hero, it is rare that a man will own his behavior so publicly and humbly. I have mad respect for him holding on, getting help, and his atonement. He his now helping others who have suffered like him. It's he head injury the medical community is now paying attention to.

Chronic pain patients have been having their pain medications taken away and living with chronic pain can cause severe depression. Lots of veterans have been committing suicide before they have had their pain medications taken away that gave them a better quality of life and they saw no hope after loosing pain relief. It’s horrible. My heart goes out to all of the families. It sounds like everything just piled up until he lost it. As a coach I have to take really specific course learning about signs and symptoms for concussions, and I have to stay on top of keeping my education current, as new information comes out constantly. We all know that no one is excusing the plumber, we’re just exploring why. Especially when there is a commonality.
In this case the commonality is so scary, people spend a little extra time on it because you’re adding another statistic to a theory that is glaringly obvious

This is so sad. My heart aches for these families. For a long time, CTE was treated as if it were a non-issue. This tragedy shines a light on its devastating effects. Ironically, these players wear the most advanced protective gear when they play these dangerous sports. In the early days of football, there was less protective gear, but also less injuries. Some have theorized that the advanced gear has also come with less attention to becoming injured or injuring someone else. There is a feeling of invulnerability that promotes riskier behavior on the field. No advanced protective gear can be a panacea against injury.

So what do you want the nfl to do? Fire every player that gets hit or diagnosed with a concussion or possible concussion? That said, I have quietly observed the evolving of tolerance. I am strongly in favor of tolerance, but it begins to morph into excessive permissiveness, which then lends itself to our upcoming generations expecting to be excused for poor choices. It's a complicated situation, with no real answers. I hope we find some answers before we reach insane levels of criminal behavior being excused through some loop in our legal system.

@Tam Rose Draconian punishment is shown to have no effect on detrring crime. So its just kinda uninformed and fascist for you to bring up. Most mass shootings are committed by people with no mental health issues. So its just kinda fascist for you correlate the 2 based on anecdotal evidence. Locking up a spacific part of our population would be eugenics, and fascist.
The issue is guns you stupid fascist.

Guns are a part of the problem. Mass murder doesnt need a gun but it is the tool of choice for most casual killers. Too many made. Too many being made available. It takes more effort to use other weapons.

This is a very sad story. Those poor workers unaware of what they would face. The grandparents taking care of their two little grandkids. Two innocent boys secure in their loving grandparents home... I think of the boys parents and Adam’s parents. So many lives hurt. Praying for the families involved. May they find comfort and peace. 🙏

Our AFL players in Australia don’t have all the padding and helmets that American players do and they get hit hard throughout their careers but none of them have ever gone on a shooting spree. No sympathy for the shooter only for his innocent victims.
