  • Metroid Prime Remastered is an excellent example of having lots of control schemes, twin-stick, gyro aiming, motion pointer controls, frankly there's so much granularity that it's a bit overwhelming. Thankfully there's one that better than all the others 😎

  • @nintoforgi
    @nintoforgi ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I'm coming in with an open mind, especially for dual sticks which I can easily envision being so natural at this point it takes over my preferences, but I've always thought that the original control scheme for Metroid Prime doesn't get enough credit for how relatively intuitive it is, especially to people who are getting used to simultaneously controlling character movement and the camera. You're able to turn without taking your hand off the jump button, both visors and beams are easily and intuitively switchable, rooting yourself in place to aim is mapped to the same side as Samus' arm cannon. It feels a little clunky and weighty, but I kind of enjoy that in a way too -- Samus isn't invisible in the interaction, it feels like you're controlling someone whose body works differently than your own.
    All that said, the true masterstroke here is that all these control options exist. One of my core wishes ever since the announcement of MP4 is that they wouldn't completely abandon the old control scheme as though it were a mistake. It remains to be seen of course, but I feel hopeful now they might include it for weirdos who liked it like I do.

    • @zemocon2868
      @zemocon2868 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You're not a weirdo because you know how to actually play the game. Metroid Prime was not created dual stick setup in mind. The entire game is designed around the original controls. Dual stick movement was only implemented to this remastered version because most people seem to think the game is a fps. It's not. The genre is a fpa for first person adventure. Even back when the original game was released, there were many dual stick movement- fps games. Metroid Prime's original control scheme is intentional and perfect for the gameplay.

      @@zemocon2868 it feels horrible to play this way, whenever I need to turn around I could easily fall off. The prologue would have taken me 15 minutes in the original Gamecube version, but it ending up taking me an hour here, since I spent so much time experimenting with the control options. Right now, I seem to have settled on twin-stick with gyro on. I'm finding that I lean towards the right stick for horizontal camera movements and the gyro for vertical movements. I'm towards the end of my first playthrough, and I've been playing with the classic control setup so far.
    I'm going to force myself to use dual analog in my next playthrough, but a few things annoy me about it.
    Trying to hit R for rockets while holding ZR to charge is a real pain. Yeah I could still use A to charge when I want to use super missiles, but then I have to take my thumb off the stick I'm now using to aim, and having 2 buttons for the same thing like this just makes it really obvious it wasn't designed to be played this way.
    Having to take your thumbs off BOTH of the sticks to switch beams is also not great.

    I think the Scan Visor was moved in dual stick mode so it would be on the same direction as Wave Beam. That way, you'd press Right for both the second visor and the second beam. It wouldn't matter with classic controls because the D-Pad would only switch visors and not beams, or vice-versa.

  • @chfgn
    @chfgn ปีที่แล้ว +4

    “Nintendo decided not to use [twin sticks] for some reason”
    This was exhaustively discussed and well understood in 2002. Dual stick controls were the universal standard for FPS games at the time (because Halo) but Retro was desperate for Metroid Prime to NOT be a first person shooter. Genres were a lot more rigid back then and FPS had a lot of baggage and reputation for being ultra violent, fast paced, and twitch-reaction skill heavy. Retro intentionally limited the controls so that players *had* to use the lock-on system to fight enemies, which allowed them to focus on combat mechanics that focused on weak points and strategy instead of having the fastest thumbs.
    What has changed in the years since then is that Halo-style dual stick controls have become the universal standard for virtually ALL games, not just twitchy FPS action affairs, so they no longer carry that association or stigma for mindless action. Also as a result of that proliferation the average player’s tolerance for alternative controls has significantly diminished.

    I experimented with the various control options but ultimately returned to the classic GameCube style controls. I would have stuck with the Wii-like Pointer controls but I got too annoyed with how easily the aiming would drift and how often I needed to press ZR to recentre it (this would be the best option if it didn't drift so easily). So I just put classic controls back on, those were perfect and didn't need changing. Even though I have GC controllers though I didn't use them and stuck to a Pro controller because for some reason they mapped the map to the start button instead of the Z button, with Z just functioning as another R trigger, so there's actually no way to open the options screen on a GC controller (and there's no way to fix this). So classic controls with a Pro controller worked for me.

  • @esmooth919

    The control scheme that works best for me is dual stick with gyro aiming on the camera. I keep my weapons on the d-pad, and my visors on the X button plus d-pad. 10 times more comfortable than the GameCube control scheme, and I don't think I'll ever be using pointer controls, because I don't care for playing with separate joy-Cons.

  • @bradystardust7708
    @bradystardust7708 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I truly believe that the original control scheme is the best. The motion controls of Prime Trilogy made the game too easy, and these new controls make it too easy as well. The original controls feel the most "metroid-esque". The stiff aiming is a core part of the difficulty of Metroid games. "Making a shot" is part of the gameplay loop. Becoming fluid with the lock on, strafe and side step dodges, only adds to the metroid formula of "improving your movement options". This new control scheme disincentivizes experimentation by giving the player an aiming tool that empowers the player in almost every situation. The game was designed around the original control scheme and the new one gives new players the Coward's Control Scheme. The cowardice, in my opinion, is not trusting players to adjust and learn from the control scheme. If a player cannot learn to play a game, then they are an adult who does not want to learn. Children are open to learning. Children learn to play a game, if they are interested in it. Think about how many games with obtuse control schemes you probably learned as a kid. The original control scheme is not difficult. You mostly lock on to targets and use the sidestep on the B button to avoid damage while you navigate an area. Do you remember playing Super Metroid and having to navigate pits of acid or lave while jumping around to shoot enemies? The new control scheme incentivizes standing relatively still and picking off any thing that enters your field of view from a safe distance. Sure this could be utilized by speed runners and hardcore players to make some really awesome stuff. My issue is that I don't believe this should be the primary control scheme for new players. This should not be the default control scheme for the game. I am very disappointed that this will be the new standard for the game. Changing the controls of any other game would a big deal, but here it seems like everyone is happy with the control change. Did nobody appreciate the original control scheme? I love Nintendo Life and I'm not mad at anybody, I just hoped that somebody would share my feelings. I love you guys and you make great stuff. Sorry for the rant haha

    As someone who has never played a Metroid game until Prime Remastered, the Pointer Control Scheme on Joycons has easily become my favorite way of controlling any first person shooter ever. Maybe it's because of my experience with Light Gun games in Arcades, but having Samus' Arm Canon aim separately from the camera itself feels so incredibly smooth, I'm able to play the game at a faster pace than I ever have before. Being able to swap targets quickly without constantly changing the angle of my view keeps me from getting disorientated, which tends to happen when I'm playing a fast paced shooter on mouse and keyboard. It's certainly not the most accurate thanks to Gyro needing to be resynced, but for a casual shooter experience - especially one with a lock on button, it is the most immersive I've ever felt.

      Moving and looking and jumping in other control schemes was my biggest concern. Thankfully, they let you jump with the L button, so you can easily jump and look around without taking your thumb off the right analog. And when you lock on, jump is still mapped to B, so you can use both interchangeably depending on what mode you’re in. I find gyro just too unnecessary in a game like this. Splatoon makes sense because of how much fine tuning you’re doing, but here it feels like an extra thing I don’t feel like throwing in the mix.

    Usually, the first thing I do when turning on a game is check the options to see what I can tweak. With this game, I was so enraptured by how it looked that I played all the way through the intro sequence without even thinking about it. Glad I saw this, I was hoping gyro aiming could be enabled for twin stick, but I might have forgotten to check for the whole game.

    I play with the Dual-Stick control scheme, usually with split Joy-Con with gyro on and free aim with gyro and stick enabled while locked on, with gyro on the default setting (which is pretty low), and Right Stick sensitivity turned all the way to 100. I find this way better because I can turn faster and I can fine-tune my aim without overcorrecting with gyro pretty low. I've also learned to turn the gyro low in Splatoon as a result and have been doing really well, since I only need the Right Stick for actually turning, and now, my shots are registering more. I barely even touch the Right Stick while locked on but will occasionally to better adjust my hand position, which is really easy to do by pressing Right Stick in while locked on. I don't think they mention this in anywhere official. Like Alex says, gyro while locked on is a bit worse, but once you get used to it, you can balance your aim and hit the basic shots as well as other enemies that may have jumped out closet to you since you started locking onto another.
    The Dual-Stick control scheme might be great if you remove the Lock-on in Echoes or if they bring back Hunters to the Switch.
    I tried hybrid, which is fine, but making the Left Stick sensitivity high for turning is too much, because you're turning a little even when you're just moving forward. I do like hybrid, though, and it reminds me of Federation Force's default control scheme.

    I'm glad they included the classic controls. I've had a hard time getting use to the new controls. I prefer the quick gun switch with the other joy stick and I didn't like the ZR + R buttons for the super missile. I really hope they remaster Metriod Prime 2 & 3 this is a very impressive remaster! Kind of bugs me they haven't made a Zelda Wind Waker version for the Switch yet. That would also be a slam dunk for Nintendo.

    I have a Power A wireless Gamecube controller that I use for Smash and I have to admit, it is very accurate to the original controllers. The advantage, it added a select/minus button to the middle and an additional Z bumper on the left side to bring it more in line with modern controllers. I haven't used it with the Prime Remaster yet but I'd highly recommend it if you're looking for a Gamecube style controller on the Switch

    It is a bit awkward that way to shoot missiles with R, but I think it works out fine, I just slide my finger up to the R button while holding a charge for super missiles and it works, also the Remaster still has Rapid Fire Missiles and I can use my index and middle fingers for R and ZR to do it making quick successions.
    Its great that they gave us this many control options, but would be super nice if the game allowed us to change individual buttons within MP Remastered, I use dual stick and one thing that bothered me was L for jump and ZL for lock on, it felt weird that I had to use that for jump when my right index finger is on shoot all the time.
    Luckily you can change the buttons on the Nintendo Switch settings and I changed L and ZL and it felt much better that with dual stick my 2 index fingers would rest on the 2 most used buttons.
    Also in the MP Remastered settings I had it set where I would use just the D-pad to change the beams and holding X and using the D-Pad to change Visors, seeing though as I would change the beams more that the visors just made more sense to me.
    I think in the MP Wii ports there was an option to change the A and B buttons for jump and shoot but dumb there isn't an option like that in the Remaster, when I play the game again soon using the joycons with pointer controls, I'll change the button layout so its more like the dual stick so that shoot is ZR instead of calibration reset.

    Thanks for drawing attention to the twin stick + gyro aim! I felt like there was something missing and that was absolutely it! Splatoon controls ftw...I can't play shooters on gamepad any other way.
    As a side note, I had similar disappointment with the gamecube controls. Its beyond frustrating popping into morph ball or thermal visor at the wrong time. No idea why they changed it...the remaster devs had to have known their players would have 20 years of muscle memory to unlearn.

    I’ve been trying this game for the first time. My experience from playing a ton of other FPS games such as the Crysis trilogy, Borderlands, Doom 2016, wolfenstein, even SW Republic Commando, and a lot more, I find it really comfortable to just use a dual stick controller with at least two macro buttons on the back to map whatever two buttons for easy access. It’s been my go to way to play basically any game on my switch and PC, not just FPS games.
    Edit: it’s too bad that, unlike most fps games on the switch, the bioshock games don’t have gyro/motion controls to speak of.

  • @GabrielSchlaefer

    The best control scheme for _Metroid Prime_ is the one introduced in _Metroid Prime 3: Corruption_ and expanded to the previous games in the _Metroid Prime Trilogy_ for Wii. You can move, jump, aim, and fire all at the same time due to the Wii’s brilliant IR motion controls, and this is simply not possible with any other control scheme. The smooth yet responsive movement of the Wii Remote, especially on the highest sensitivity setting, eliminates the dizzy, frenetic jiggling characteristic of twin-stick shooters on display in this video, and allows the player to enjoy the exploration-driven world of Metroid Prime as it was originally intended.

    I believe honestly THE best control scheme settings combination to use with a Pro Controller is this:
    *Control Scheme:* Dual Stick
    *Camera:* Gyro+Stick
    This is about as close to making it feel like you're playing Metroid Prime with a proper *"Mouse+Keyboard"* control scheme as you can get, cause you can still use the Right-Stick to control your general camera movement and the direction you're facing, but with the Gyro enabled, you're able to make fine-tuned reactionary adjustments to your aim on the fly in combat without always feeling like you NEED to lock-on every time in order to hit your targets which feels REALLY good when in combat or for just looking around at your surroundings for secrets.
    If you own a Pro Controller I HIGHLY recommend giving these control settings a try, it feels REALLY good playing the game this way.

    • @Thudd224
      @Thudd224 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Dan Sutherland you'll want to get a switch Bluetooth adapter and a controller with scuff paddles. I recommend an elite series. Cause they're built well, and have programmable button layouts. I've got my jump / dash on my lower right paddle. Morph ball is on left bumper. Dead swap is my lower left paddle. I have a button layout specifically for prime with those buttons set that way so I can swap over to that mode once I'm loaded in and not have as much struggle with the menus.
      Oh and the reason she this movement feels like doom is because team retro , the ones that made the prine games, ate the same studio that makes doom. So to be more accurate, doom plays like metroid prime with a good controller.

    You wanna get your mind blown? Metroid Prime uses pretty much the exact same controls as the old Resident Evil games (for moving, aiming and shooting, the only things these games have in common), especially the GameCube RE games:
    A - fire
    Z - map
    R - aim
    L - change locked-on target (like the GCN ports of RE2 and RE3 as well as the REmake)
    Left Stick - walk forward and backward, turn left and right in place (a.k.a. tank controls), aim when holding R (exactly like RE4)

  • @peanutt82004

    Gyro gives me motion sickness because the viewpoint never fucking stops moving, while twin stick is perfect for me. If you also have an issue with motion sickness but want to play this game, experiment by all means but give twin stick a shot, it locks where Samus is looking and gives you full control as to when the viewpoint needs to move when you're not locked onto an enemy.

    I appreciate having multiple control setups to choose from. And giving us traditional, dare I say modern lol, dual stick controls was definitely a must. But for myself, I prefer the classic controls. To me it’s what makes Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime. When I first played it on GC 20 years ago I loved how unique the controls felt. It just felt different in a good way. I wasn’t playing an FPS but rather a Metroid game that was specifically designed for the first person perspective. The fact you had to stop and stay in place to move the arm cannon up and down made sense to me. Ultimately, it’s a very subjective discussion about the controls, so play with whatever setup feels best :) What a masterpiece this game truly is!!! So happy Nintendo finally gave us this magnificent remaster.

  • @StevenUlyssesPerhero
    @StevenUlyssesPerhero ปีที่แล้ว

    The reason the GameCube Prime games didn't include twin stick aiming is because the first game started development the same year the control scheme was introduced (Alien Resurrection for PS1,) and it took a while before players and reviewers warmed up to it. (Go look up old reviews of that game, the controls were actually lambasted at the time.) Evidently, Retro decided on their single-stick lock on solution early in development, and were too busy making the game to go play other console shooters and notice that a new standard had been established.
    Your guess is as good as mine for why it wasn't an option in Prime 2 though.

    I know there's a setting in Classic to move the Map from + to R or ZR; I wonder if you did that before activating the GameCube controller, whether it would remember that map used to be up on Z rather than block you from the Logbook/Options/etc.

  • @mvdk5042

    I thought there was an "original map button" setting for the classic scheme that would make playing with a gamecube controller work perfectly as an emulation of the original control experience.
