native german here, the sentence "I said yes I was making real progress now" would be "Ich sagte, ja, Ich mache jetzt echten Fortschritt" or "echte Fortschritte". The first thing you have to do is to reverse the backshift of tense. Then the english sentence would be "I said, yes, I am making real progress now" and if you now translate that to german the result would be "Ich sagte, ja, Ich mache jetzt echten Fortschritt". I hope I am correct coz I struggle with the english reported speech... :D. Just wanna let you know that it is not that strict, the past wouldn't be totally wrong necessary. Another "work around" would be to use the Konjunktiv 2 (General Subjenctive), "Ich sagte, ich würde jetzt echten Fortschritt machen". If you have specific language questions I would recommend you to ask on reddit r/German (there are the experts xD)
I love your study with mes I was rewatching last years to motivate me. I’m in yr13 but have started revising for mocks because of interview prep but I’m starting to get motivated
Hey, Eve, I'm from Germany and was struggling quite hard with this sentence as well! Either way, I think there is no direct translation for the "was making" structure in German but I'd say "Ich sagte ja, ich mache jetzt wirkliche Fortschritte" because that implicates it was happening in the present whereas "...ich habe wirkliche Fortschritte gemacht" or any other past tense would implicate that the process was already finished. I hope that makes sense!
Christmas break is so overwhelming I have so much I want to get done and I don’t know how to fit it in, but if I don’t get it done I’ll feel unaccomplished ahhh I hate GCSEs, wish I could focus on subjects I acc like , you work so hard eve!!
Trust me, I’m doing a veterinary nursing degree. I thought the exact same as you but now I wish I could go back to GCSEs because I had so much less work to do and all the information was so much more straight forward 😭
I’m revising for my as mocks and this helped me so much!!! I really want to go to Oxford and LMH and seeing you there has given me the motivation to try even harder! Love your videos xx
Eve, you and the book are such a mood. 😂 I'm so done with Gatsby, and although I'm enjoying the poetry I'm getting a bit fed up. I'm just waiting until we start Dubliners, then I'll be flying! Oof, I feel you. I'm taking French in a Lithuanian-speaking school doing an English IB program, so my second language goes through my third language into my first, and let's just say it can get... wacky. 😂 My poor brain often forgets which language it's meant to be using, so I use some weird hybrid language.
From one lit student to another, what helps me to get through tedious novels is either read some criticism for to see that it is not as boring and useless as it seems, and/ or use the audio book. I often listen to an audiobook at 1,25/1,5 speed, as that is usually faster than you can read. Plus my concentration isn’t as good as to focus for an hour on reading usually, but with an audiobook I can! It also helps your listening skills.
*8 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS! Who’s excited?!🎄 Notif Squad wya?! Love you so much Eve! Such a huge inspiration! One of my absolute faves!💗* *ps I’m a small TH-camr
Don’t dogs just make the cutest waking up and sleeping noises 😂 my dog is genuinely my biggest source of entertainment (she chases her shadows around the room for example 😂, genuinely funny but kind of sad at the same time??), so frustrated, losing my best teacher in biology even though she isn’t leaving the school and about to move onto my 3rd Physics teacher THIS YEAR. Year 10 is going GREAT, already shit scared for my GCSEs
Hey eve! I'm studying languages too - translation and interpreting at the university of bologna in italy - and it's so cool seeing a youtuber doing the same thing! From the clips i've seen i think our courses are pretty similar, we both do translations and i'm reading some books that are probably similar in content to the books you were reading in your last vlog. I'm doing english, french and from next semester will be doing portoguese as well which im so excited about!!!
first of all, this video is making me want to be productive again (and it has also made me feel so ashamed because i've been doing absolutely nothing). Second, I feel you for the Joe and Dianne thing 😍 they are way too cute together!
It's really interesting as a German to see you learning the language and reading books we've read in school! I'm studying English, so we might should talk to each other and improve our languages😊
Another native German putting her opinion into the mix: I think your translation is right. It's particularly difficult though, because "ich mache" can mean "I am making" (Verlaufsform), but at the same time "mache" is conjunctive 1 of "machen", which is the form in which it is used here I think, because it reports indirect speech.
Thanks for uploading this, gives me some motivation to study for my last two exams of this term. I have the first one tomorrow and I haven’t really been studying today because of lack of concentration 😒
you modavate me so much even when i have no revision to do because my exams are over you would like modvate to clean the house or go to the gym or something LOVE YOU xxxx
German being my second native language, I'd opt for past sense for your example: Ich sagte, ja, ich machte große Fortschritte. You're absolutely right, if it wasn't reported speech, then it would be "Ja, ich mache gerade große Fortschritte" but since the introducing verb, sagen - sagte, is in the past, the verb that follows, machen, must be put in the past tense as well. Hope that makes at least a little sense lol xx
bessiebuddy it’s gonna get hard when your in year 11 because you have so many exams and I have had my science mocks , real maths and 2 English already 😓
Wally Whippet looking back gcses arent that hard, everyone makes it sound so hard and stressful with all the pressure but you don’t even need to do that much work and don’t actually need to revise during year 10. I’m now doing a levels.
Jadzz it’s because our school does mocks for year 10 and if you dont get into the band which represents you academic level you get a bunch of after school work and possibly moved down classes :/ My school basically makes it unnecessarily stressful for everyone
bessiebuddy tbh moving down in classes shows nothing. It happened to me and I just didn’t care anymore. I worked a lot in year 11. School didn’t set me homework, didn’t have mocks, yes I did sit my real gcse textiles and art but that was it in year 10. I passed everything and got onto a levels so screw listening to teachers, they only care about the number. If your getting too stressed out over GCSEs then stop. Your mental health comes first ( that’s the one thing I’ve learnt ) and I went to one of the worst schools in the country! I now go to the complete opposite and is an outstanding school.
Love and support you so much! Thanks for all the motivation as well as talking more in depth about your experience at Oxford, it's super helpful! Wish you the best xx
Love you so much Eve! 💕 It’s successful creators like you who make me hopeful that I can soon reach 10k on my channel and be as successful as you one day! love you so much! ❤❤
Hello there! Im your fangirl from Malaysia and i would love to admit that i freakin love watching you studying Eve!!! 💜💜💜 you inspire me and others and set such a good example and role model for the society like for real! Love love love!! Have a good weeks of studying for the upcoming ones!!! 🎈

I am a German who studies Latin so I know quite a bit about German grammar but I had a Spanish exam today and I’m totally confused with grammar now after what you just said haha.
Is it normal in the UK to have classes that last until after winter break? I'm not sure how the University schedule works there. In the US Christmas/winter (whatever you want to call it) marks the division between the fall and spring semester. So our classes end early-mid December, then we have the studying/finals crunch and get to go home until after New years. I like it cause it lets us have the holiday time to decompress.
I'm German and in back in school when I did my A-levels we read Effi Briest and I hated it. I just could not get through it, it was so dull and I could not be bothered to read it. I just recently got rid of my copy a couply of weeks ago, it felt so good! :D (I do get the motives of the story and we did have some interesting in-class discussions, but the novel itself ist just not for me.)
well the subjenctive is not actually a tense but sort of a mode of speaking maybe that's why it sounds confusing explaining it with tenses if it is what i think it is then there should be subjenctive tables for common verbs I might recommend learning those forms because most of them art irregular to some extend. Also, your pronouncation is quite impressive great job! Effi Briest is sooooo dense I was tested on this book for my finals blehhh. If you know Madame Bovary (French book) there are some parallels to Effi Briest, might be interesting for you to have a look at sparknotes for Madame Bovary.
