(Which if the case, would probably lead me to watching her videos despite me being kinda drunk. But at a minute of content...yeah, that's really fun...)
I’m always looking for smaller channels to watch. Especially livestreamers because you actually can talk with them directly. They also usually do more obscure games
OMG, the guard spec story I'm still trying to get every gold symbol in emerald frontier battles, and the last pokemon I added to the team was a curselax. I had to level up until lvl 85, so I used the elite four many times. By the way, with fully HP + SP Def EV train, starting at level 38 I was able to win :-p You know the mightyena on Sydney likes to spam sand attack, and I needed at least a double boost by curse to overcome the trainer at that level. Guard Spec is magic there, the AI does not understand that you are safe from that attack XD
Metagross+ Latios allows you to sweep the entire frontier. It's what speedrunners use. you can find walkthroughs with movesets that they use and strats online
I spent a lot of time getting the gold symbols too. So much time in fact that I now hold the record for the longest Factory streak. I'd recommend saving lots of your time and using the pc box cloning glitch to clone 5 Pokemon holding 5 rare candies over and over to avoid having to battle the elite four for exp.
In the first 3 generations the AI is stupid, it is clumsy, and it only makes random attacks, but I think that if you go with a Pokémon with white smoke I think I still do not read that you have immunity to the sandatack, or someone with keen eye, I think that from the 4th generation they do things differently, but these games are not like the final fantasy, being it was thinking for children.
Another really fun challenge! I personally really enjoy playing the lower level runs more, as you can have a lot more variety in fights. Also I love that Pikachu was such a glass canon at times, it was there and then gone xD
Funny story, I got the inspiration to do my first gift pokemon run from your "In game trade only" videos. I was actually the first challenge runner to do a gift pokemon only run and they quickly became my most watched videos by far. I have you to thank for that in a way, as I probably wouldn't have thought to do a run like that otherwise, as pretty much everyone was doing solo runs exclusively. Seeing you do a gift pokemon run is kind of surreal to me, but in the best way possible! Thanks again for what you've contributed to the challenge running community :)
On our way through, I took the helix fossil. I knew if I didn’t say what I took you’d all ask. Actually now that I think about it everyone ask anyway. Comments are good for the TH-cam algorithm.
20:50 Finally a recent video where you mention this XD Alright, so for the Normal/Fly distinction I can explain that one for you. Without going too deep into lore and speculation. Every move of Pokemon has an aura effect about it radiating energy of that "element" (for lack of a better word). In many cases it is this energy striking the target rather than the physical object. The exception to this is Normal and Fighting. What makes a Normal type normal is the lack of energy influence. This is why Normal Typing has no strengths or weaknesses, it is the physical object making contact. Fighting type moves similarly are the expression of Martial form. It has a small amount of energy (Chi effectively) but taken from the natural form (thus it's interaction with other types), however as it is still fundamentally applying a direct physical impact Ghosts can still phase through it. The existence of Chi gives Ghosts something to interact with which is why Ghost can harm Fighting types. Flying goes back to the "Element" thing I mentioned earlier. While a normal peck would pass through a ghost, the move "Peck" is a name given to a small gathering of Fly type energy focused at the tip of the beak. This is also why we have things like Whooper using Ice Punch, and Doduo using fly.
Odd story, but I used to have an emulator on my DS and play Pokémon Yellow. For some reason, the version of the game my dad got me didn't work in the sense that if I caught a Pokémon and saw it's Pokémon entry, it would just go blank? That meant that I could only have Pikachu, the three starters, hitmonlee or hitmonchan, and so on. In a way, I kind of already did this challenge when I was a wee little boy. 🤣
Fun Fact: Guard Spec is basically canned Mist. A Guard Phys would most likely be canned Safeguard (also 5 turns, statuses are more "physical" than stat drops, plus canned Protect would be busted)
@@ethanrose9682 Well, at least it's not Consumable Item Protect. That is literally the definition of busted. And maybe that's why there's no Guard Phys
The funny thing for Germans is that "Gift" is german for "Poison", so at first I thought for a moment that you were only going to use Poison Type Pokémon 😄
I suggest a Red/Blue run with only Magmar. If you look at its move list you’ll understand why. If you want throw in no Tms for added challenge I’m pretty sure magmar would have one of the highest base stat totals for a mon in a single run that you’ve done so far.
Magmar would be a bit boring and eventually not that hard. Its TM move pool includes Psychic, Body Slam, Mega Punch, Hyper Beam and since it doesn't learn anything until lvl 36 for Leer, lvl 39 Confuse Ray and lvl 43 for Fire Punch, MDB would just have to grind levels and only use Ember and Mega Punch most of the run until then. So it would just be lvl 20 Magmar to defeat Brock, probably 30ish to defeat Misty and then after that the run would slowly become a breeze, though Lorelei would pose potential problems.
Fun fact about when Guard spec is helpful - for the algorithm, ofc: Guard spec is used in Alpha Sapphire + Omega Ruby any% speedruns. Without it, the team Aqua/Magma leader is going to lower your stats when you try to set up. If they don't lower your stats however, they use Embargo instead, which means you can not set up anyway. GLHF with that!
Yes, please make more videos like this one! You could play through Johto with only gift pokemon. There are 2 gift eggs, a shuckle, a gift eevee, a spearow, and the starter. Guard spec is useful in challenge runs that allow items against teams with intimidate. For example, gen 3 venusaur champion has gyarados and aracanine with it. In a nuzlocke you can get an easy win setting up dragon dances with a gyarados against pidgeot and then using guard spec before sweeping.
Challenge: Pokémon Firered with only 1 Growlithe should be quite interesting. Decent stats, decent movepool but in a region that is quite harsh on fire types.
That was an awesome run! Brings back to myself playing Yellow(which was my first Pokemon game). And you're right, I can't think of one time a guard spec helped save me in a gym battle
While I was playing through Pokemon emerald i was battling archie in the first turn misclicked and used gaurd spec instead of x attack and it really saved me as his mightiyana kept on spamming sand attack and failed and sharpedo kept on spamming scary face. This one is important because i was trying beat the game with just my starter and if i lose a single battle i lose the challenge.

What an awesome thing to do giving these channels shoutouts. And you did good detailed ones not just saying their name. You're awesome for the TH-cam community.
This is a very low energy week 32 of asking for Pokemom Sapphire with only one Absol. It's a cool, overcast day here and I don't wanna get outta bed. EDIT: oh this is shamefully embarrassing, this is actually week *33*.
its so hard to not hear that since the pronounciation is the same in german too :)) so almost every time i hear "gift" i think about starting with bulbasaur.. getting nidoran later and so on.. xD
Here's my Guard Spec story. I speedrun most Pokemon games, and in Gold we use a Guard Spec for the final fight vs Red. At that point we have a lvl 62 Feraligatr and he leads with Pikachu. Thunder doesn't oneshot, so he has a 75% chance to use charm on any turn that we havent attacked yet. We use a guard spec turn one, set up our x attacks and x speed and with some luck we win the fight with Pikachu never landing a hit. The guard spec protects us from all the Charm attack drops
Wow, that a nice blast from the past. I actually did something very "similiar" to this years ago before the internet was not only dial up. instead I used pokemon Ash actually used, and well since most the gift pokemon are what Ash gets, the only ones I actually caught and used were butterfree and pidgeotto. Luckly Pidgeotto actually spawns in viridian forest so I was able to get it right there. but yeah doing it this way, the rock gym is gonna wall. I had Butterfree to muscle my way through with confusion.
Ahh damn, if only i had a Twitter xD either way, thanks mdb for being one of the few creators left who truly cares about other people trying to get started, we love you, we love your content, and thank you for existing
4:48 says that you entered Celadon. I thought it was Cerulean. Anyway, I have never used Guard Spec nor any of the X items in any of my Pokémon playthroughs. I wonder if it'd be possible to do a Gen 3 run with only Shedinja.
@@skyiloh7460 My bad. Thanks for informing me it was already done. Kinda embarrassed now. Regardless, I personally have never used X items and I have done fine.
Hey MDB! First off, great videos overall! Your Pokemon challenges got me started on your channel and it was an easy subscribe from there (Magikarp run was the first I saw). I was really glad to see this challenge come up! I did it myself recently and had a final team of Venusaur, Kabutops (dome fossil ftw!), Gyarados, Charizard, Jolteon and Hitmonchan. You've also inspired me to do my own theme and challenge runs, and soon I'll be doing solo Butterfree through Gens 1 - 5. Keep up the awesome work man, it's a genuine delight to watch!
On our way though I took the Helix Fossil. I knew that if I didnt say what I took you would all ask. Actually, now that I think about it, everyone ask anyway. Comments are good for the TH-cam algorithm. Edit - Like this comment helps the algorithm. Another edit - This comment will be dumb if he picks the dome fossil.
You should totally try a Radical Red playthrough. Super tough game but you’ve played enough Pokémon to where you shouldn’t have any issues, it’s super satisfying to go through the game with all the improvements
"Gen 1 sleep sucks" True, but if you have the flute, you just use it on the very first turn that your pokemon is sleeping and gg (specially cause if it wakes up, they don't attack, so the flute always the best solution)
Something I never noticed before: if you look closely at dewgong, its right paw looks like it is flipping you off. :D Great content, as always! Thanks for sharing it!
When doing a gen 2 run, guard spec can be pretty useful for red. It lasts the entire battle, and means you can set up against physical attackers against pikachu, since you can spam curse without worrying about charm ruining your attack.
Another awesome video - I loved the shoutouts to the other people as well, there's so many people out there that I'd watch, if only I knew they existed ^^ I hope you have a most pleasant day
Yes please more challenges like this, always appreciate the variety and I hope these are a good break from single Pokemon challenges, enjoy all the challenges
Commenting for the TH-cam algorithm! Also, checking out a couple of those smaller Pokemon streamers 👀 It's really cool that you're shouting out smaller streamers, by the way, and I think the way you're doing it is super creative! 😄
Yellow was the first game I ever played (all the way back in the late 90s), so this was a fun throwback! I never realized how different the teams and even the available wild Pokémon were from Red and Blue.
Holy crap, I actually did Pokemon Gold with only Primeape last year. Primeape snaps Gold like a twig, so I'm sure that Mankey can handle it, although I never did Kanto, so that'll be interesting for me. As for this run, it was kinda neat to see the starters again, I'm so used to them getting replaced that it was nice to see some of them used. Also, dang, Aerodactyl is really good, I forgot it even existed.
I have to say that I really respect this! Promoting some small channels and giving them a chance to gain few more views this way! Too bad that I missed the opportunity for not having a twitter, but it's not like I would have been lucky enough to get picked anyways.
It has been a while since I looked into the route or did a run last, but if I remember correctly in one of the older routes for Pokémon Sword/Shield speedruns Guard Spec was used in one fight for safety to make sure you did not get confused/sleeped/something like that. Great run MDB! Thanks for the entertainment!
I did a no-catch run-through of Blue Version last month which is basically the same thing except your also allowed to buy the pokemon from the game corner. I remembered concluding how easy it would be to do the same run-through in Yellow with all four starters and then the large variety of others to fill out the team. Fun challenge!
This was a really enjoyable video! :D I absolutely loved it. Also, I do play pokemon, but I could not tell you what a guard spec even does lmao. I uh-- I don't use it a lot lmao I'm gonna guess it increases defence? xD
Commenting before you get to far in the video. I used to do only gift Pokemon in Yellow when I was a kid (and thought you had to have 6 Pokemon to get to the Elite Four). My favorite team at the Elite Four was Pikachu, Venasaur, Charizard, Blastoise, Hitmonlee, and Aerodactyl. Can't wait to see what team you end up with!
I actually used a guard spec to beat some random trainer in emerald who kept spamming growl while I was trying to train up a mon (zigzagoon I believe). Ended up losingmy only other mon to a crit while switching to reset attack, so in a moment of desperation searched through my bad and actually found a random guard spec, so I used it and one. Honestly never thought that thing could ever save me. And also remembered to pack revives next time!
About the Guard Spec thing, it's actually used in the speedrun for Ultra Sun and Moon, against Ilima's Yungoos, so it can't Leer or Growl you to the point where you can't kill Smeargle.
22:23 The reason why Exeggutor's sprite looks good is because it was ripped straight from Pokémon Gold. Every other front sprite in Yellow is original afaik. Edit: Ninetails' sprite in Yellow comes from a beta version of Gold. The final version uses different sprites.
About Dire Hit: critical hits ignore stat stage modifiers, so it might be usefull to reduce your crit chance with dire hit (lovely bug) if you have your attack increased 2 or more times. It's very specific and usually you wont even bother, but it might help. Also, if not for the bug Dire Hit would be increadibly stong in Gen 1.
Man you should have taken the dome fossil on this run.... that would’ve literally been galaxy brain... only time you get to use it and it’s not even the helix fossil lol. Love your stuff man!

I'm not Swedish but I watched enough hockey growing up to know that Kjell is pronounced Shell. And if you ever do a nuzlocke name the pokemon after users who asked you to do a nuzlocke as revenge.
It’s really nice of you to show small youtubers and streamers. I might watch green clonk because bravely default is a game I like.
This guy Is a gift that keeps on coming! It's amazing how he can help every other fellow youtubers/streamers that are on the Rise and actually male an impact on their life! Keep going strong MDB!❤️
Hey, just wanted to say you that your content is very entertaining and funny. Keep up your great work, we appreciate it
It's kind of funny that "gift" means poison in German
its so hard to not hear that since the pronounciation is the same in german too :))
so almost every time i hear "gift" i think about starting with bulbasaur.. getting nidoran later and so on..
All hail the Almighty Algorith! Good to see you again MDB! Beating Oblivion at level one is still a standing challenge.
He *might* be able to do that, but I believe he may have to use console commands to lower his level back down after doing a daedric quest for the MQL.
You can get umbra at level one, so it is possible. Still quite the challenge.
he could probaly do it.
OK THIS IS PEAK MAHDRYBREAD, HIS WHOLESOME NATURE IS ON FULL DISPLAY
I think there’s a video of that.
He's done that run already.
Also in my opinion, X items are BUSTED
Beat me to it!
OMG THROWBACKKKKKSSSS i used to watch you all the time. guess i can binge this week! :3
I wonder which fossil he’ll take in mt moon???
"Gen 1 sleep sucks" True, but if you have the flute, you just use it on the very first turn that your pokemon is sleeping and gg (specially cause if it wakes up, they don't attack, so the flute always the best solution)
I think it'd be neat to see a nuzlock once a month like the "other game" challenges. It seems like they would got the format
Something I never noticed before: if you look closely at dewgong, its right paw looks like it is flipping you off. :D Great content, as always! Thanks for sharing it!
Yay! Thank you. I've been waiting so long for this.
Bit of a weird run but a cool mix up of the usual formula. Great run, glad you've been having fun with these newer runs.
When doing a gen 2 run, guard spec can be pretty useful for red. It lasts the entire battle, and means you can set up against physical attackers against pikachu, since you can spam curse without worrying about charm ruining your attack.
Love the shout outs to even small channels. Still marathoning these, I'm getting there
Another awesome video - I loved the shoutouts to the other people as well, there's so many people out there that I'd watch, if only I knew they existed ^^
I hope you have a most pleasant day
Yes please more challenges like this, always appreciate the variety and I hope these are a good break from single Pokemon challenges, enjoy all the challenges
Thank you so much for the shout-out, you're a great friend, see you in Mario party!
Not only do I love Mah Dry's channel because of the great content, but also because he is genuinely a really good/ nice guy!
there was that one time where i had little pokedollars and i sold my guard spec and then i bought a potion.... that is all
I was so confused for a second cause I only saw the Pikachu and the Omanyte and went- “Oh a challenge only using Pikachu and Omanyte, that’s weird.”
The gift pokemon runs are always great. I really love this format
I love how a bunch of this run is the Water Onix run people were expecting a few weeks ago 😄 Anyway, thanks for the fun playthrough
Great way to give something back to your fans! Will definitely check out some of the streamers you promoted.
I uh-- I don't use it a lot lmao I'm gonna guess it increases defence? xD
This is one of those runs where you don't watch for the challenge because you know it's gonna be easy. You just watch because of the amazing host
This is amazing!!! 20 plus minutes of how great water onix is!
i am very happy that Fossils count as gift pokemon, this video is a gift to the Pokemon Community
This video really specced my guards
I don’t see how this is a challenge run. This is how I played Yellow when I was a boy. Glad to see you’re having fun though.
About the Guard Spec thing, it's actually used in the speedrun for Ultra Sun and Moon, against Ilima's Yungoos, so it can't Leer or Growl you to the point where you can't kill Smeargle.
I remember Greenclonk was also in the Smeargle video
22:23 The reason why Exeggutor's sprite looks good is because it was ripped straight from Pokémon Gold. Every other front sprite in Yellow is original afaik.
Edit: Ninetails' sprite in Yellow comes from a beta version of Gold. The final version uses different sprites.
Guard spec is used in RSE speedruns! Basically you use it so you don't eat Sand Attacks while you're setting up the other X items.
All I have to say is holy crap thanks for the shoutout on a day like today you reenergized me for the last few hours of my shift while in the car delivering pizzas. Did not see it coming and when I heard it I was like holy shit. Coincidently my birthday was this past Wednesday and this was a nice touch to the weekend.
