      I´d love to see moore videos on shield building - and since getting a decent shield could be rather expensive I think a lot of people out there share my interests.

      how would you make a curved round shield?

      I have one
      What direction does your plywood naturally want to bend
      Im trying to make it thw same way, but im finding it very difficult, as it seems that the outer faces of the ply run along the width, not the length, as a result it HEAVILY resists bending...

      This shield blank has the fate of becomming our second imbracciatura (th-cam.com/video/iZ3i9krHmjY/w-d-xo.html). But i can take the oppotunity to focus a bit more on the straps. But other shields are also in the planning =)

    thank you so much i made a view shields with normal planks its more of a tournament shield, its only to look great. but it was like 7 kg so not very useful in combat. now i will try to make this shield. thank you for showing the steps you are great.

    Gute Methode, ich habe es mit mehreren Spannriemen gemacht um die Wölbung des Schildrohlings zu erreichen. Tolles Video. Fechterische Grüße.

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Die Spannriemen wollten nicht gefunden werden, daher in diesem Video ohne =) manche Schritte sind leichter, andere schwerer mit Riemen. Für eine "Massenproduktion" ist irgendwann eine Positiv/Negativ Form als Schildpresse idealer. Dann wäre es auch möglich authentische schilde aus Planken einfach in formen zu verleimen. Kommt vieleicht irgendwann ;-)

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I estimate around 20 € if you buy stuff like the woodglue in bulk, the 2 boards were around 8 eur back then, but wood prices changed a bit.

  • @TheWaylandern
    @TheWaylandern 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very nice method, how long are your clamps ? I have planks of the exact same size

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The clamps to bend the shield have a spaceing of 52cm, the woodclamps to press the sheets together are just standart sizes and additionally the aluminium square rods are just longer than the shield is high (more than 130cm). I hope the right answer was given ;-).

    • @TheWaylandern
      @TheWaylandern 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SchildwachePotsdam thanks a lot, i was interested in the 52 cm ones.
      Initially i was going to bend my planks against a big oil barrel, but it has ridges which could deform the planks, so i will try your method

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Keep in mind that after gluing, there is springyness in the boards, thus the bend will be less than during gluing. Better to use more than 2, if you have the possibilty, you can also take a big board and put 2 parallel timbers instead of the clamps. Or more clamps =)

    Do you build round shields as well ? I mean round bend shileds like a hoplite ? Because we once made a video with shilds build by ourself, but they were flat, so i was curious how someone made that.

  • @the.mr.malave

    Kämpft Ihr auch mit der gebauten Ausrüstung ?

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ja, wir nutzen die Sachen sowohl für technisches Training als auch unkooperatives Sparring. Natürlich nicht die reinen Holzplatten. Die schilde bekommen noch eine Textil oder Rohaut bespannung, und je nach Anwendung wird ggf. die Kante verstärkt (z.b. Buckler oder Rundschilde). Für den Fall der Schild ist für einen höher Intensitäts Kontext funktioniert das ganze auch mit 3 lagen oder je nach budget auch andern Holzarten. Wir werden aufjedenfall Footage posten sobald wir wieder gemeinsam Fechten dürfen :-)

    I know that this is an old video but I do wonder would this step be necessary for a tower shield (not scutum, just a plain tower shield) because I want to make a shield that can is focused on blocking Ranged attacks like airsoft and paintball would a flat shield work or even be better?

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  ปีที่แล้ว

      the curve gives it lots of stability, because the energy of the impact is distributed along the curve and not just dead center on the thin material. So it might reflect the projectly which reduces the damage to the shield by dissipating the energy elsewhere. Here you can find exactly what you are looking for: th-cam.com/video/C5w0h1VkR_M/w-d-xo.html =) Best, Stephan

    Could you use 5 or 6mm thick plywood?
    Im afraid that those thicknesses wouldnt take shape. That they will straighten back up after you release the clamps.
    Im asking because I cant find 4mm thick plywood.
    Also, would you say 10 (2x5) or 12mm (2x6) thick shield blanks are good for historical accuracy?

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It could work with 5 or 6mm, but probably you have to bend it at a way smaller radius to compansate for the snapping back after releasing the tension during glueing. What you can do against rupturing of the surface is using a lot of glue and wet the other surfaces slightly. But I think ending up with 12 mm is the absolute maximum for a shield thickness. You could also use 3 layers of 3-4mm ply to achieve this thickness. For more strength I would go to maximum of 9mm thickness and just add another layer of linen on the backside and maybe a hide topping on the front. Than it becomes like medival fiberglass

    This is the easiest and most convenient way to make a bent shield blank that I know, thank you) I use a more complex system and it doesn't really suit me.

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! It's intended to be a convinient way to build one with little tools. If you have space and the resources, a shield press would be supirior of cause, but it only can produce one at the time 😁. Best, Stephan

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on the Targa, do you mean the scottish round shield, the buckler-type from italy, the tournament-jousting type, a parvese or the HMB-buhurt punshing thingy? :D

    I got 4mm ply and when I try to bend it i hear cracking. is that normal?

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on the bending radius, maybe its to much or the wood is to dry. you could try to wet it a littlebit before bending and always bend 2 pieces together with glue inbetween. (then also a evtl crack will be directly resealed again)
