Some of the small detail parts might need to decide replaced on the shield often. But what you made is more than just a cosplay outfit. I love your work. I love how you are using some actual shieldwrighting techniques (such as bending the wood after gluing them together and proper shield strapping) but you also take alot of artistic liberties too, to bring the fantasy element to life. The design is beautiful and you have done an amazing job!

  • @Avetho
    @Avetho 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This type of shield has two notable, _unique_ uses that I can see:
    *1.* The bottom of the teardrop could be sharpened like a pike as a heavy stabbing weapon or to spike the shield into the ground for stationary cover
    *2.* The ornate cutouts on the side would be reinforced against shear force to provide a method of trapping the sword of an enemy, allowing you to disarm them
    *Kind of 3.* In a magical setting, which emphatically and quite unfortunately reality is not (or fortunately depending on your faith in humanity), that large purple shield boss could be a gem enchanted to generate a surface boundary layer over the connected, mana-conductive shield metal (perhaps mithril) that allows it to withstand greater physical impacts via diffusing the force vectors outwards, or to ward off magical projectiles by way of mana dispersal or even absorption and conversion of the mana into the gem as extra fuel to maintain the barrier.

    Nice build! Fun fact, the "hooks/holes" on the sides (the whole top part of the shield, actually) can actually be found on historical germanic dueling shields from the XVth century (look for the Talhoffer Fechtbuch for some examples), so the design is more historical than you may think! It may be seen as an hybrid of the germanic dueling shield and the teardrop shield of the XIth-XIIth century. Although, for practical use, it would be better to replace the straps by a single vertical handle running the whole length of the shield (with the added advantage of not having you elbow sticking out of the hole).
    Keep up the good work!

    As a hobbyist weaponsmith and -carver, I must say, that is one sexy shield you got there! It's like a slim kiteshield with cutouts. Those cutouts COULD maybe be used to hook weapons or stuff aside if your character has some insane speed/strength...
    not only that, but it's pretty well made. The only thing that might be useful next time is to add a layer of fabric that's glued on to the wood, to give it extra strength and make it more like a IRL shield. Outside of that, very well done!

    Holy cow. If I saw a warrior in battle with that shield I would not think "easy target", I would think I could get stabbed by the pointy top of the shield or if I try a stealth attack from behind I get stabbed with the pointy bottom of the shield when she holds up the shield and simply pivots.
    The shield suggests a whole alternate fighting style. Less "this shield will protect me" and more "this shield will allow me freedom of movement and it will hurt you". Brilliant design.

    I love that after making an armor with crotch spike she get's defensive over a design for a shield, that would perfectly well, especially with a spear.
    The only significant difference between the shield she made and one that would actually be used (other than material of course) is that the bos would likely be hallow. In all other aspects the design works perfectly fine.
    The holes would be hard to abuse by a potential attacker. Even with the holes the shield offers plenty of cover and the holes make it easy to attack while wielding the shield.

    a bit of medieval-nerd trivia: the wooden shield would have been perfect even if it looked "wooden" since all European medieval and ancient shields where made out of wood, but there is nothing wrong with making it look like metal either... Even if most medieval shields where made of wood, some had a metal (generally steel or Iron) middle section (called boss) or may have had the rim covered by metal (bronze, copper, some times iron). In some other cases (i.e. ancient Greek hoplon), shields may have had a thin sheet of bronze or leather covering the face

    "His shining shield was scored with runes,
    to ward all wounds and harm from him"
    - Song of Ëarendil
    Thought it fitting ^^
    Now you just need a weapon and helmet to complete the set.

    Technically, you can find a fair number of shield designs that had cutouts in the sides. They were usually wielded alongside a spear so you could stab through the cutout while covering more of your body. I believe the Minoan and Mycenaean Greeks used them, mostly.

    Honestly from a perspective of having access to magic, perhaps the indents on the sides are to allow spell casters to poke a sneaky spell through when on the defenisve.

    Actually, the holes could be used to poke your spear through to stab at enemies, which would be pretty interesting in a shield wall

  • @josephehlers2007
    @josephehlers2007 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I know this video is old, but I just wanna say that the shield looks amazing, and can also be used pretty well too, as it can be used by a right or left handed person, as with the holes being on both sides it allows the weilder to poke their spear or sword through the holes while they hide behind it in a shield wall or testudo formation, and because of the holes on either side, it doesn’t matter what hand your dominant in, you can use both left or right hand, and while it may not be the best at protecting against arrows or bolts, it would still work well as an all around fantasy infantry shield, probably like elves because they are usually the pretty looking faction in fantasy and the shield is definitely pretty, and also not a bad design if you are to use it in battle, sure their are weak points but no shield is perfect, but it’s a good all around shield and I wouldn’t bet against it in an infantry vs. infantry/horsemen battle, as it can be used very well, just as long as they know how to use it!

  • @jlarts

    While the shape itself may not be exactly historically accurate there are examples of very similar kinds of shields. To me this style of Elven shield that Weta Workshop put together looks like a cross between a Norman tear drop and a German tournament shield from the Talhoffer treatise (lots of weird looking full-size shields in this one).
    But historical or fantasy that's a great looking shield and I would love to make a similar one.

    It turned out BEAUTIFUL!
    I still don't understand attaching the shield to your arm, or the economics involved in its use.
    What is the best position to hold a shield in?/What is the best handle or bracer to use on a shield? Is it possible to create a variable handle that allows you to grip it however you want? Can a handle double as a way to attach the shield to your back for carrying? What's the best technique for attaching your handle to the shield itself? What is the best ambidextrous handle option?
    If anyone would like to help a total noob, it would be very appreciated!

    The sheild’s holes are actually not that bad, especially if combined with a stabby polearm or crossbow. I’d have the hooks go up instead of down, but your sheild is both epic and functional!

  • @pjduker05
    @pjduker05 ปีที่แล้ว

    As a military historian I can say your shield would actually be very useful if combined with a spear, pike, or lance. You should make a fantasy spear to go with it. Something long with a huge fantasy style spear point. Colored to match your beautiful shield!

  • @LavenderRain24
    @LavenderRain24 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should try putting together a warrior's chariot to go with this outfit! That would be epic! OH and maybe even a HORSE'S ARMOUR!! Perhaps even a male version of the armour complete with a helmet and perhaps a hand made bow and arrow set as well?? SO COOL! Though if it were me making it I would've done the dark areas around the 'gem' in the centre silver to match the outer parts, then would've done the intricate details (the gold markings) dark purple to match the centre piece but overall a great design!!

  • @spamhonx56

    Couldn't help but smile at the 'this is a fantasy sheild' disclaimer, for a few reasons:
    1) it is a perfectly viable shield shape (and a really good looking one too)
    2) the LotR shields that shape are made of metal, which would be really heavy, and so historically we see shields of this size or bigger made from wood. Specifically, multiple cris-crossing layers of wood. Plywood, if you will.
    This shield is accidentally more realistic than the prop it is based on.

    Wow, yesterday I watched for the first time one of your videos ( the one were you went a week into the cabin to paint ). Since then I watched a few more and I am very impressed by you skills and talent; it seems there is no limit to your creative mind. I just wonder how you know all this. Did you do some sort of art school, because you know all these materials for different things.
    Watching your videos makes me want to work on my hobbies because you inspire and most of all, its really nice to see how happy you get when your creation is looking great.
    I feel a bit sad, that I am not in the position to support you, but I can't look into the future ;-)

    It’s so brilliant how you made the wood curved and the final result is incredible. Every time I see your videos I think about making my own things xD Like an armor or a shield (but I would definitely try something easier and smaller, because I have a better chance to be successful than I would be with yours xD) You are a person who can give me the feeling that everything is possible if I would try. And I will try. When I have my own home (one room while living with my family is a bit less place than I need) xD

    Beautiful shield, however, I recommend one change: Instead of forearm grip, use a center grip. It would allow more functionality seeing as how this basically a kite shield. Having said that, forearm grip still works well for cosplay purposes.

    You should do a crystal spear along with your daggers because then it WOULD be a useful shield too!!! It’s what the design is for I believe!
