I am from Algemesi, one of the badly hit towns, but I live in London. Last time I spoke to my dad was on Tuesday night. It's Friday night right now and I haven't been able to talk to him as phone coverage has not been reestablished yet. I know he's doing fine as I could talk to some neighbors.
The most outrageous bit is that it's been already 3 days and little to no military personnel has reached my hometown. We have more than 100,000 military people in Spain, and we know they are ready to help and waiting orders. Central Government has barely sent 2,000. The affected regions have a total population of 300,000. Nobody in the area understands the lack of response, we cannot explain it. Towns are still without electricity, water, and phone coverage, and it's been 3 full days. Central government blames regional government politicians and vice-versa as they are from different political parties.

I'm from Spain, I'll try to explain
The autonomous goverment of the area can activate alert lvl 2, which they remain the control of the goverment of the area and ask the central goverment for resources, or ask the central goverment to activate alert lvl 3, so the central goverment will take control of the area, also in lvl 3 they can send the military under Defense Ministery
The central goverment on their own, without the asking of the local autonomous goverment, can activate lvl 3 and take full control
The local goverment from PP doesn't want to show incompetence, so they preferred to remain in control, and ask for help to the central goverment, which they haven't had until yesterday afternoon, first asking for 500 military, and today they have asked for another 500 military and for firefighters.
The central goverment from PSOE doesn't want to take full control, so they don't have to take the fall nor they risk of being called dictators.
So basically, the only military that was there for the first two day were the UME (Unit of Military Emergency) who works under the ask from Ministry of Interior, some Local Police and Civil guards, around 1,200 effectives, for an area of 550,000 people affected...
Luckily today, over 72 after the flooding, there are over 5,000 effectives, but the Goverments should pay for what they have done.

It shows one thing: federalism does not work! Each province should have an emergency mechanism. If EU countries are able to use military airplanes to drop humanitarian aid in foreign countries, why can't they do it in their own countries?? These poor people had to walk 5 km to get some dirty water from a broken pipe. Indeed, your government will have a lot to answer for!

As stated by some people, warning systems didn't fail. Politicians did. The same politicians that cancelled the financiation of the emergency response teams in Valenecia. Also, these politicians did nothing to try to avoid this. They just told everyone to just keep acting as normal, and issued calls for help and alerts, really late. Carlos Mazón is the president to thank for this. He also tweeted that the storm would be moving away from valencia, even when the forecast from the goverment didn't state the same. He later deleted that Tweet. I just hope this facts see the light and there are consecuences for this.

Droughts and floods are increasingly frequent due to climate change, resulting in more extreme weather events. It’s crucial to understand that a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions is methane from ruminant animals, which has a greenhouse effect 28 times greater than carbon dioxide. Additionally, nitrous oxide from livestock farming has a greenhouse effect 298 times greater than carbon dioxide. By reducing meat consumption and increasing our intake of plant-based foods, we can all play a part in combating climate change and protecting our planet.”

Why not worryivng about prevention? The mountain and hillslopes that were deforested decades ago have contributed to devastating floods. Don't blame climate change only.

Seems a common theme these days, not helping the people in disaster's. ISNT TAXES part of this, to help!. Look at the USA, three disasters that they didnt bother even helping the people with. Oh some sort of offer of $750 is supposed to help. Whats going on, where are the rescue teams?..

    • @davecooper3238
      @davecooper3238 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

$750 was an emergency payment to help getting past the first few days. The real help does come.

I think the army themselves were busy saving their own families too and that is why they didn't come to rescue these people.

Unfortunately for Spain, France had the same problem in several regions of France at the same time.
Otherwise the French army could have helped, it knows how to manage disasters better.

Shouldn't the central government activate a emergency and call in the military and such.. maybe they feel the floods is only affecting "a part of Spain" so its not a nation wide emergency..

    • @Xiroi87
      @Xiroi87 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

It's more complicated than that, as the regional government needs to either request help from the national government or the national government can choose to impose their decisions, in which case the regional government will cause stir saying they've been overrun. Of course they are each from different political parties.

did anyone in the Gov feel they should offer something?
    I mean
u want Support from Spain right?
Thats like our second closest neighbour.
    Ignoring Ireland.
    Until it requries such aid.
Just do it for the alliance of it.
    I mean spain ain't bad.
Its connected with some rough history
    but who isn't
    except the innocnet
    i think
    send the aid.
may be a bit late now
    if its too late
    next time
    send the aid.
always have teams ready to go.

Couldn´t agree more. I am from Valencia and we don´t need that kind of inflammatory narrative on top this hellish situation that has been brought upon us atm. We already know exactly whose heads we´re going after.

And also making local people speak in English instead of having them speak in the local language(s). That just shows a luck of humanity. Putting more pressure on them, making them think in a foreign language is criminal.

None of us expected this. We had alerts of heavy rain but this was so fast. No one could get into the areas. This area is an industrial estate with major stores including IKEA who helped as did many other stores. Army, police, search dogs, bombers went from our area and many other areas. It’s why I don’t watch MSM.
