    John Bercow as a John Redwood supporter? How times change.

    It's like wondering which of two turds in a toilet bowl will float to the top.

    Kenneth Clarke was, believe it or not, seen as the choice of the grassroots Tories at that time.

    20:10 Bercow's flattery and sweet-talking is a long-standing trait, I see.

    So Ann Widdecombe was a Clarke supporter back then, that's not how I'd have imagined it, not one bit

      And then she jumped ship to the Brexit Party... And Kenneth Clarke was booted out of the party by Boris Johnson.

    How far the Tories have fallen in 25 years. Once a serious party, now a motley crew of authoritarians, libertarians, racists, British nationalists, Christian fundamentalists and weirdos.

    Fantastic upload- amazing to see this so many years on! I remember listening to the 3rd round and being stunned Hague won so easily in the end. Long term it probably was the right decision, as Clarke would've been too divisive. However he was the outstanding candidate in that contest.
    Do you have coverage of the 2001 contest by any chance?

      I don't think anyone seriously thought Hague was the right choice as leader. Clarke was significantly more popular with the public. This was in many ways the Conservatives' "Michael Foot" moment. Choosing someone from the further edge of the party (as opposed to a big hitting, popular former chancellor) simply in an attempt to placate the out of touch elements of the party, but paying a very heavy price with the public. It underlines that party members are often significantly out of touch with the wider public. Just like Labour were crazy to choose Michael Foot over Denis Healey, the Conservatives were crazy to choose William Hague over Ken Clarke. In both cases, it was a suicidal decision to be slaughtered in the following election.

      @@zeddeka Yes, and then they did it again even more dramatically with IDS in 2001. Hague was at least clever and witty in parliament. IDS couldn't come across as clever and witty anywhere.

      Not recorded - I thought it unlikely to produce a winner so saved the tape for the later rounds.

    • @ryanlamb7945

      what do you mean the later rounds

    • @DBIVUK
      @DBIVUK  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This contest still used the 1965 rules for the Conservative leadership - to win on the first round needed an overall majority and 15% lead, which was almost impossible for any candidate to get. It was possible there would be a winner on the second ballot (needs an overall majority), though more likely a third round would be needed (a run-off between the top two in the second ballot).

      i am curious, what is your fascination with this particular year. Do you like myself feel nostalgic for the early years of new labour.

      I'm uploading what I have and what might be interesting to others. Only started recording a lot of TV from 1995 because that was the year I moved on from parents, moved to London, found a job etc. And being interested in politics and elections that was what I mostly recorded. There were a lot of big political developments in 1997.
      But yes I'm nostalgic for the days of a Labour Party in touch with the British people, that formed an effective government which vastly improved British society. Who isn't?
