I would first spray into the hole to kill the larvae and the bees themselves. Then I would pump the hole full of caulking till it ran out of the hole and then smooth it off for painting. No steel wool needed.
@@misspiggy9647 Yes I have changed my view on this and I now see that the steel wool is absolutely necessary. Carpentry bees do a helluva lotta damage to houses buildings and decks.
But the bee holes in my trellis are in stained cedar wood. Not going to paint this, and not sure paint would go over stain anyway. The real problem was when the woodpeckers came and are going to demolish this trellis if I don't do something. I do want pollinators but don't want damaged wood.
Great tip! Now, how do we prevent new holes or encourage the bees to go elsewhere?
I never tried steel wool but the bees will drill right through caulking
Thanks for the tip!
Looks like the bee wasn't happy at all!!
Dust the holes.
The bees will just make new holes

What does the steel wool do?
The carpenter bees can't saw through it.
I would had been severely stung by now!😬. You are brave!!
The males that are buzzing around her don't sting, but they do get close, as you can see.
They don't sting
The males can't sting, but they can be very scaring buzzing around like that...to people who are freaked out about bees.
