I traded my 2000 Soft Tail Night Train for a 2019 Breakout 114. Never thought I'd part with that bike until I rode the Breakout. It absolutely pulls like a freight train. Love the ride.

@@MattLaidlawDo you need the Fuel Pack for the stage II ? When I put the stage I on my '17 Breakout the chick at parts told me I needed the Fuel Pack for that and of course I didn't. That was around $300 for nothing. I should have returned it but I held onto it. So, when would I need that damn fuel pack ? They started talking about self tuning meaning me with an app in phone. ??????? What ?? With these new bikes coming with this 117, wow. Thinking about going up a couple stages. I've been shopping these bikes. I live in Maine, and the dealers around here are almost giving Harley a bad name. Yiu never feel like they appreciate your business. I'm a business owner, and I know that if you treat your customers great, you'll get great customers. All that said, I thought your review, was honest, direct and answered so many great questions. Great review Matt👍 for anyone interested, I just finished a 1000 mile ride(my first long ride ever) on my '17 Breakout. I was nervous(this is my first bike btw) because having only been riding a year, I didn't know what to expect. The riding position was definitely a factor. Storage was a factor. Everything Matt hit on I agree with. I made the trip out of necessity as I moved. Honestly, it didn't turn out that bad. My trap muscles are sore because of the heavy backpack and I'm starting to feel it it my lower back as I type this(I finished the two day trip yesterday). All in all it went good but a big part of my statement is out of lack of experience/variety . Remember, this is my first bike and I have probably less than 130 miles experience on other bikes when I was learning to ride. I practically learned/fine tuned my skills on the breakout. I know without a doubt if I made that trip on a touring bike, it would have felt like a Cadillac compared to mine and I would realize just how truly brutal my ride was in comparison. Nevertheless, ignorance(for now) is bliss. I love riding...it's still relatively new to me. Appreciate the videos Matt!😎👍

Takes some balls… no experience and a 1000 mile ride after just 130miles under your belt.
Seems like this bike has a lot of compromises .. form>function.
I had a 2010 Fatboy that was bad ass. Looked so cool and was dope to ride (on shorter rides.. Under 2 hrs and not too much hwy)
Just got a crazy deal on a 2019 road king with 4K miles on it.. anyway.. it’s been the perfect ride for me.
I hope your breakout is still running strong. And they do look damn good. I love the style

just a quick note to remind non harley riders that these motorcycles are poorly designed when the seat is setting on top of the motor, it is a air cooled engine and there is no space for the air to cool the rear cylinder so the heat is massive and very uncomfortable for the rider and expecially on the right leg is hot as hell especially at a red light in summer time riding..

I am on my second 2017 CVO Pro Street Breakout. I went backwards from a Milwaukee 8 Softail frame because the CVO Breakout is such a GREAT looking ride. '18 Breakout 114, (FXBRS, my first Harley) 5'4" rider (29" inseam) 36 yrs old... bike fits great, stock seat, bars, and pegs. I've done 4 hr rides without pain in my legs (my legs aren't fully straight to reach the pegs). I can get both feet down comfortably, but on the balls of my feet, NOT flat-footed, while at a stop. When riding solo I feel myself getting into the "clamshell" position to try to get out of the wind during 75+ mph highway stints, but I think that is also part of the "attitude" of the bike. When 2-up, I'm more straight up, blocking the wind from the wife. Just got a sundowner seat for her, and she wanted the lower sissy bar and small pad. She's more concerned with her butt sliding off the back of the seat than with leaning back. I'm planning a solo trip in the future that could be up to 12 hrs long depending on traffic through some metropolitan areas and I don't have any concerns about my comfort on this bike. That being said, I come from a sport-bike background, so this is way better than the torture rack my Ducati 1198 is. I've also done OKC to Houston, to Tallahassee to Daytona and back, in '15 on a Yamaha Venture (1300cc bagger). While the Breakout is definitely not the Lazy-Boy the Venture is, it's not that much worse. Just my $.02.

I've had my 18 Breakout for just over a year now. Your review is spot on all over the park. I've had the stage 4 kit installed and done a few cosmetic customisation's but its basically a kick ass bar hopper. I've compromised by adding a wider pillion seat and a short backrest for the missus which I remove 95% of the time. I'm 5' 11 and find the forward controls just fine. The drag bars put you in a more aggressive riding position but I find this style is easier to corner, brake & change gears. Apes (IMO) look all wrong on a Breakout. I know they suit some bikes and people enjoy that riding position but not for me.
The breakout ticks all the boxes for what I want in a Harley. The few negative things I have heard in reviews don't really affect me. I rarely would feel the need to ride further than my fuel tank capacity. Its good to stop, get off, stretch the legs and have a look around every hour or so.
Another good review vid Matt. Keep them coming. Cheers

I have owned a 2003 Dyna since 2008 so it is beyond time for a change. I will have to pay a visit to a dealer because I am stuck between preferring a Breakout and the new Harley Fat boy. It has to stay loud, as loud pipes have saved me from myopic cage drivers more than once. I prefer a bike with floorboards or the ability to have them fitted.. Just hearing them run makes me wanna crank mine up and head out following the front wheel to see where it leads... as you do. Best get it serviced asap. I have a 2018 114 Breakout. I'm 5'8". The drag bar was too far for me. I want to sit straight up. The seat that Matt talked about worked, but I decided to changed to the standard handlebars. They worked perfect, but pull away from the style. I'm looking for a compromise that looks aggressive, but doesn't involve ape hangers. Everything Matt said is true. She really is a fun light to light Bar hopper. I have cruised with my Dad on his Goldwing on hour long trips. It's was only the wind that was a problem. The ride is very smooth. Still thinking about pipes. I really want that Harley sound, but Cali emissions make it tough. I think I'll stop by this weekend can check you guys out.

I test rode one last fall and totally loved it. If I was looking to buy a new bike, this would definitely be my choice. The greatest pleasure I get riding is leaving the city for mountain/country roads. As long as you ride the bike within its limits, you can have a great time. With that in mind, this (or any bike) can be a great ride on twisty roads.

It isn’t the bike you put 10k miles a year on so it’s not a primary vehicle for the most part. Most 20 somethings can’t afford a 18k toy and used they still aren’t under 13k. Love them though!

@@dsiz9421 I think the Harley “brand” is one of the strongest “brands” of any business that currently exists in the world and that’s an incredible thing to have if you’re a business. The dealer network should be very careful about not tarnishing that by not fully focusing on risking client long term relationships at the cost of some short term sales. Having a dealer that’s been around 60 years knows the value of that.
I think the guy above is right about price and with that comes some degree of exclusivity. People in their 20’s and 30’s have other life priorities going on like wives/kids/mortgages and have less disposable income but as you get older you’re freed up of some of these things and you start to think about doing something for yourself. I’m a real estate agent and as I’ve got older I’ve had 2 Porsche, an Aston Martin and a Bentley Continental, I’ve also learned to fly and at almost 60 I’m doing my bike licence and will have a practical Honda Transalp 750 and a HD Breakout because I love the way they look. They’re a piece of motor art. It’s nice to have nice things. I’ve probably got 20 years left to live if I’m lucky, so why not 🤷‍♂️ - younger people will absolutely want them but it’s not quite their time yet (apart from a few enthusiasts may be).

I just bought a new 2018 107" Breakout left over from last year in Wabash, Indiana. I Got the screwing from them. Was discounted in price. Paid $17,400 put 10% down. I realized they gave me financing at a Harley bank with 16.69% interest for 84 months. Payments $340. I called bank about interest and was informed the Harley dealership set that high rate and they can't change it. So after I make a couple payments I am taking a couple thousand to my bank and they will refinance it for 5% to 9%. It's the second new Harley I bought from them in 10 years. First one was 6% interest (had bad credit then). I will never buy another one from them. But I like the bike. 😊

They probably should have kept the original CVO handlebars. The drag bar doesn't bother me, but with the old bars, it'd be a little less clamshell riding position.
I don't know that I feel a huge power difference between the two engines, but the 114s I've ridden seem to have a smoother on/off throttle response which I prefer. Also, the round air filters on the 107s stick out into my leg more.
This is my overall favorite HD. It doesn't handle as well as the Fat Bob nor is it near as practical as a Heritage, but aside from the side mount plate, it looks perfect and is still a blast to ride IMO.

Just watched this and thank you for recognising that it's not just height but body proportions that are important. My son and I are both 5'10", but his inseam is about 5" longer than mine and his reach is longer, like his legs.
He sits comfortably upright on a Breakout, legs with a comfortable bend and with relaxed arms and elbows. I end up with my legs at full stretch and leaning forward with straight arms in a rather uncomfortable clamshell position.
    But we are both 5'10"

Its a grey area really. At that point if the motor company decides that the failure was caused by the headers they will deny the claim. It doesn't void the warranty. The power train warranty is voided by using an aftermarket tuner. Screaming eagle slip ons on the softails are pretty quiet.

Hey Matt, just bought hubby a 2022 breakout in Gauntlet Grey metallic, 12 week wait now for it to be made and shipped to Australia. Any future reviews on the 2022 breakout?. I hear they are being completely fazed out this year and are currently made in the US and assembled in Thailand I hear. And even some of the well known Harley sites like Saddleman etc don’t list a breakout after 2020 and upon chatting to them they were surprised and had no idea the breakouts continued till 2020 and have revamped there site to include the current model. Be good to do a review and your thoughts of any difference between no they are made in Asia and Harley dealers said the continued the line to supply the high demand in Australia and the UK but this will be the last year of production. Hope to hear and do hope u do a follow up, thanks and god bless.

Great stuff as per usual matt. I write for a motorcycle mag here in NZ and bought a breakout . im only 5.6 and it fits well . at first i thought man this is a little bike, being used to riding the big 2000cc kawasaki and the tripple triumphs. it is smaller in stature but it has a lot of heart . i had custom bags made for it and i can tour on this bike all day long . i personally went with the breakout vs a street glide initially for the muscular look . But have fallen for the knees in the breeze ride style its a winner for me. im about to load it up and head away for 7 days in true chopper style. living the dream

People arent interested in "Electric scooters" and overpriced "Electric bicycles", nor adventure bikes or Sport bikes. What's next for HD? Golf carts, Snowmobiles or 4 Wheelers? Perhaps an HD Snowblower? On a separate note Mr. Matt Levatich drove one European M/C Company (MV Agusta) almost into bankruptcy. Hadn't he departed they might not have recovered. I'm shocked that the Board of Directors at The Motor Company haven't taken a firmer stance on the financial crisis that is currently under his watch. Matt Laidlaw would square the Motor Company away and make them profitable again. Thanks for your response Nick.

My rear tire is shot but it was fun destroying it.

The triple trees have a 2* rake as well which shortens up the trail, hence it turns quite quick (the old WG and a few softails had 3* trees) so this model has 36 degrees all up which also means installing longer legs will shorten the trail as well so beware as it may cause tank slapping issues.. I’m adding 4” overs to mine and very likely a steering damper, the damn thing handles better than the height allows. Btw I’ve built bikes with 43* on the neck, add 0 trees and you get 9” of trail, add 6* trees and it drops back to 3 1/4” with 8” overs... and what’s with you Yanks, don’t tour on it etc.. I also have a C6 Corvette convertible and I see so many people on USA forums demonise owners who install a tow hitch like hey you can buy a pick up truck: ok if you have space and a load of spare cash: I just want to tow my race bike and teardrop van in style without the added cost of having a special vehicle for every occasion: we here in Oz will tour on a 250cc bike or never leave the city on a bagger with all the gear on it. My 2019 Breakout will see a few trips exceeding 10,000klm over two or three week periods (I just sold a 2011 SG and the fairing was all but useless, the Breakout hits you with nice clean air, add a roll up on the headlight and 🙂) Btw the 5 gallon tank off a few of the other models will bolt straight on but I suspect the aftermarket will also play well.. or customise the tank, it’s what we had to do back in the day... when we all wanted the smaller tank lol: funny how times change.. I’m 64 and lovin’ it.
