What a precious piece of history that has been preserved after almost 70 years and the quality is good. Are the Helmericks still alive, perhaps this film could be narrated if they were.

This couple looks to be in their early 30s in this video. We're talking 1949 here, so i don't think they're alive. And if they are, then they pushing 100 for sure. So i'm guessing they're probably dead.

It's amazing that a video camera from 1949 worked in that harsh environment as well as that Cessna.

The poor dog ( closest to driver, on left side ) was lame in his left front paw/leg. Not sure if the driver noticed, but it is very obvious as they first pull out of camp. Poor baby!

It's actually 67 years old. It was made in 1949. I visited there in 2011. It's an amazing place. I paddled the Alatna river solo for 184 miles and didn't see another person.

The Helmericks wrote a book titled, "Flight of the Arctic Tern" which chronicles their living and flying in the Arctic. It is a very good read. Another book of theirs, "We Live in the Arctic" is fantastic. It chronicles their trip up the Alatna river by canoe and building a cabin and spending the winter of 1944-45 there. They almost starved to death. You can find the book on Amazon. Enjoy it.

The airplane is the Cessna 170, produced between 1948 and 1956. And there were portable color cameras too, like the Bell & Howell 8mm. Cheers.

they should've had some type of shelter for the dogs, and the way they were treating them, I'd like to bitch slap them, they may not be pets BUT that doesn't mean you cant treat them with respect, I've had dogs my entire life and to me the way those dogs were acting around them, they've been mean to them, tails between their legs when they were in contact with them, how often do they feed those dogs? because it didn't look like they were giving them very much food
