    I've known about FTA since the early 2000s. I grew up with family that had a huge dish with C band. I hope FTA doesn't go mainstream. The government will find a way to lock it down and corporations will find a way to monetize it.

    • @FarpointFarms

      Good point. If too many people start getting into it, they will lock it all up like they did in the 80's with C-band.

      I've thought about this a bit but imo I don't think governments would ever let it/want it to go mainstream for sake of taxes. And most people honestly are just not intelligent enough to set it up themselves. Most people could barely hook a stereo up or plug in RCA cables back in the day. Reason I say this is basically every country uses FTA satellite like shortwave radio used to be (and still is) used as part of their internal propaganda efforts against other nations. So Voice of America has its own FTA satellite networks for people in the Middle East, China has its own FTA channels, etc, etc. A big thing is in Iran internet is firewalled and controlled a lot, so FTA satellite is kind of the main means of how stuff comes in the country, and nothing can really jam or censor it very easily, the most the authorities do is steal the LNBs or crush dishes every so often.
      The only reason imo to use it in modern day is to have a backup information source since the internet can be censored, but it's VERY easy to get free IPTV of all the same networks on FTA satellite and of course paid channels, too. So it's not like the early 2000s where satellite cracking was the only way to get free TV. Even outside of doomsday scenarios stuff can happen and you can be without internet for weeks in a natural disaster, so having FTA dish as a backup is a relatively good idea imo.

      It's a fun hobby! You won't like it if you imagine that it will replace Cable TV, but if you just enjoy the strange and off beat, than this thing will be fun to play with. I really like it and can't remember why I didn't get this going sooner.

      I had to give up on pay TV years ago. They force stations you don't want for prices you can't afford. Worse yet the shows get worse and worse. TH-cam is way more informative.

    my understanding is there still live feeds and number of channels on C. more than ku they say but you need a 5g filter a no less than 8ft dish, i think you need a motor and disceq 1.2 for it to auto track sats

    • @FarpointFarms
      @FarpointFarms  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have part 5 that talks about C-band. I have setup a 8 foot motorized C-band dish and there are a LOT of live feeds as well as FTA channels out there. There are also 2000+ live radio station feeds out there as well. It's a great way to stay informed.

      @@FarpointFarms i need to check that out! i don't see much info on the solid 6.9ft KU/C band dishes, some swear by no less than 8ft dishes going to check out part 5

    Hey Erik, I happened to find a FTA satellite receiver on Facebook marketplace probably about 2 years or so ago, and I did buy a dish, and fooled around with it a little bit, but I haven't fooled around with much since.

    • @FarpointFarms
      @FarpointFarms  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should give it a second look! While it's no replacement for cable TV, it sure can provide some fun as you stumble across random interviews, and live feeds for all over the states. Plus there are usually news feed and even a Unnameable network news channel. One Satellite has over 100 channels from all over the world, so if you speak a second language there is a ton of stuff there. The best bang for the buck is to pick up a STAB HH90 Dish mover so your setup can see all the sky with out having to manually readjust the dish.

    • @morganrussman
      @morganrussman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FarpointFarms when you mention a unnameable news channel, is that literal or figuretivly? As for speaking a 2nd language, I don't personally speak any other languages outside of English. I did buy that FTA satellite receiver off Facebook marketplace that I think was probably a 2,000 to 2,005 type model. I forget what year it was exactly without looking, but I did pull opened the lid and pulled the hard drive out of it and think I found a date of probably about 2002/2003 or so. For subscription tv, I'm not interested in that stuff all that much. Over 2,000 tv channels just to pick out about 10 or so channels just for you to watch? Yeah, no thanks. I think I fair more towards OTA, it's free, you don't have to worry about outages, or a tv company cutting a tv out on you if you don't end up using a tv in over a week. Actually, that last statement is what DirecTV used to do on my parents when they were together pre 2012, DirecTV would shut a box off if we didn't use a tv in over a week. But, anyway, I don't think I would watch enough channels or watch TV enough for me to feel like it would work worth my while to pay for tv.

      @@FarpointFarms that's what i had. But it used the cards. Using the wide dish and 4 lnb setup. 1080: A couple of years ago, I went out and paid a couple of grand for a 4K TV. As is always the case with technology, you can buy the same model right now for half that. My point is, it is a consumable investment...a depreciating asset. So you have to ask yourself: "What am I getting in exchange for losing money, when I buy tech?"
    Others probably have a different opinion but...I have 4K...TRUE 4K, I changed out all of the cabling and everything until the TV said it was receiving a 4K signal...and I cannot tell the DIFFERENCE between 4K and 1080p. 1080P was considered "High Def" before 4K was created, and honestly...I don't think there is enough improvement in the jump from that to 4K to be worth what you have to spend to get it.
    Just one man's opinion.

    I been involved in FTA satellite stuff since i was young. My dad bought a Strong satellite box (which was top of the line at the time, witha. Diseqc controller and toher things that were considered fancy in 2003) when i was born so i could watch cartoons that would come on paid satellite (they wasn't scrambled at the time, they were on an Astra satellite, i think Astra19E), then after they got scrambled my parents subscribed to a service that became bad over the years, now i got a Solovox V8s plus that has some workarounds
