FTA Satellite Systems Part 5: C-Band Dish Install, Movement, and Scanning. The Big Dish Is Live!

  • Time to wrap up my series on FTA satellite systems. With the help of Robbie Strike, and a deep dive down memory lane, I now have a 8 foot C-band dish here to go with my 36 inch KU band setup. This big beast scans the sky for the latest news, and wild feeds that pop in from time to time using a minimal amount of money.
    The GT media V9 box was 44.99 with shipping on ebay, and the dish mover was 89.99 with shipping from ebay as well. I used new old stock Radio Shack Coax for the feed horn and car speaker wire for the control wires on the mover arm.
    Was it worth it? Aren't all hobbies??? Sure! LOVE the 105W radio feeds, and am currently saving up for an Edison 4K receiver that will pick up the few stray signals that this current box wont.

    Family had a C band in the 80's. Fun to watch the wild feeds. Inherited a C band dish mounted on the roof when I moved. Used it for a while, then cable moved in. Didn't use the dish much after that. Now scouting around for possible yard installations for a new dish when I'm able to get 1 (Ku band) or 2 (C band) dishes :)

    I will just stay with my roof antenna that’s been up there for 40 years. I can pick up 32 channels on it and that is plenty for emergency situations. People will still need backup power for any of this to be any good! Very interesting video!

    A friend of mine has a 1.5 meters Ku Band dish and since he can't install a USALS H-H Motor because it's too heavy he uses an actuator and a positioner exactly like yours for the C Band dish. In my case I only have Ku Band dishes and my largest Ku Band dish is 100 cm and has a USALS H-H Motor. I also live in Europe and C Band is not used only Ku Band, there are lots of free channels.

      So, it depends. C-band has a lot of odd ball live feeds, backhauls, and still has some really interesting channels that you can also find on subcarriers in the USA. I love it, but it's not for everyone and certainly can't replace Cable TV if that is your thing.

    All of this is so interesting. I talked to a guy at work who told me about the good old days when he sold and installed dishes. It got me interested and here I am. I'm wondering where I would even start if I wanted to get into this. What kind of costs am I looking at for getting started from nothing? Where can I find resources on aiming? I love your and Robbie's videos! They certainly make me want to get into it. Thanks for what you do!

    • @FarpointFarms
      @FarpointFarms  ปีที่แล้ว

      Your best bet is to drive around the rural areas and look for one of these dishes. Not many use them anymore so if you see one in a yard, leave a note in the mailbox asking if you can buy it from them. This one cost $50 plus the gas to get it.
      Beyond that? You will need a dish mover. If the people you buy the dish from still have a receiver, use that as a dish mover. That old unit wont work for picking up signals, but it's fine for pointing the dish. Next you'll need a FTA box. You can spend $30.00 and get a decent one that gets 85% of the free signals, or spend $225 and get one that can pick up nearly every free signal.
      The only other costs are the bag or two of concrete to set the dish, and wiring from the dish to the house.
      I built this one over the course of a year with the dish first, then the wiring, then the mover, and finally a good receiver. Love it!

  • @pennylessplantation
    @pennylessplantation 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great info again!! Is that v box necessary to move KU dish? Wasn’t sure how those worked, was wondering if the receiver could move it. I hear Bongino is taking Rush’s slot, there’s nothing like the original definitely but Bongino is a good choice. Thanks for the info, again.

    Hum, so these huge backyard satellite antenna systems are now mostly for the hobbyist - kind of like sitting around using an old shortwave radio, just to see what you get? In other words, these dish/receivers are pretty much useless for any meaningful content anymore, yes?

    • @FarpointFarms
      @FarpointFarms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Is it a hobby? Yes. Is it useless for people used to Cable TV. No. There are still a lot of FTA channels up there right now that you can watch 24/7. There are also a lot of "Feeds" that come and go at certain times of day. These are commercial free and are streams of all the shows that are sent to affiliates. There are also 1000's of random live feeds of news that also pop up. Lastly there are literally 1000's of radio stations to listen to for free as well. Think XM, but more, and free.

This channel is active only when some programming regarding the President of Mexico. This center is owned by the Secretary of the Interior.
