- What if MEGAS from "MEGAS XLR" was in Super Robot Wars? An ability showcase.
MEGAS XLR is a 26 episode American comedic Super Robot cartoon series. It aired for two seasons on Cartoon Network before its cancellation. The series is notable for its irresponsible, dim-witted, and destructive protagonist, as well as its contemporary American setting and plentiful references to anime and other media.
The story of MEGAS XLR begins in the year 3037, where the human race has all but lost a war with an alien race known as the Glorft. A pilot, Kiva Andru, attempts to take MEGAS, a highly modified robot stolen from the Glorft, back in time in order to change the outcome of the war. However, Kiva and MEGAS instead accidentally land up in Jersey City, New Jersey in the year 2004. There, MEGAS is found and overhauled by a slacker, Harold "Coop" Cooplowski, based on his love of video games, hot rods, and wrestling. Unable to pilot the modified MEGAS due to Coop's unusual control scheme, Kiva instead resolves to train Coop to fight the Glorft. While the Glorft are presented as Coop's main enemy, most of the episodes are self-contained and focus on unrelated foes.
The series also shares a number of characters with MTV's Downtown, an adult cartoon which had also been directed by Chris Prynoski. In MEGAS XLR, a fictional television network with a similar focus and logo to MTV is frequently subject to collateral damage, probably an in-joke getting comeuppance for Downtown's cancellation.
While MEGAS does have a fair number of attacks which are used frequently, many only appear in a single episode. For the purposes of this video, several attacks which bear a strong resemblance have been considered the same, and most individually used missile launchers have been omitted.

Megas doesnt have a limit to its ''abilities'' to showcase.
It not only has everything Coop needs at the moment,
While also has everything that harms Coop at the moment.
Its such a fun dynamic to watch.
my headcannon is that Coop just changes Megas equipment regularly to whatever he feel like going with at the moment and that is why Megas have so many abilities and never run out of cool things to showcase, as well as being the reason Megas always have everything Coop needs at the moment and everything that harms Coop at the moment.
@@killansoulslayer591 Certainly I can see that happening, heck a lot of episodes happen because Coop keeps trying stuff, like somehow installing a teleporter in megas, or replacing random stuff at random times.
@@Aldenfenris Which would also explain the numerous call-outs and easter eggs, the Yamato's Wave Motion Gun, the Big Energy Sword, the Reflex Cannon, those were all things he swapped in because he thought they were cool at the time.
that "no limit" is actually what made show boring in my opinion. Whatever happened, Megas had the right tool in hand. One time he has big cannon in chest, other time plasma cannon or whatever, another time he had something different. All such somehoew hidden in Megas' torso.
let's take a look at Medabots for example. Rules are simple: bot has machinegun and homing missiles. That's all. The plot is all about how to make good use of that. Megas has everything all time.

If MEGAS XLR made it into SRW I would freak out a little.
That would be absolutely awesome. I actually think that the developers would be silly to try not (despite the IP rights hell that Megas exists in) given the increased playing of SRW in the west, that plus as it is a homage to the genre as a whole, including the most famous (most likely) native IP that was straight up a homage to the SR & Kaiju genres in the west would be great.

So many nods to Space and Mecha anime, it's great. Space Battleship Yamato, Macross, tons more. This show was basically a series-long love letter to the genre.

This show was legit Gurren Lagann before it existed.
And I mean that not in the “inspiration” kind of way (that would be Mazinger & Getter Robo), but in the sense of being a similar type taken in an opposite direction, since both were 2000’s robot animated series with 26 episodes that referenced similarly large quantities of the mecha genre & other retro media in differing ways.
Also GL is more on the Getter Robo side while Megas is on Mazinger’s end, with a lot of the same media showing up in both (Gaiking, Mobile Suit Gundam, Yamato, Captain Harlock, Macross, Combattler V, etc)
Gurren Lagann most likely took inspiration from other gundam anime.

Coop at the beginning is like every space adventuring sci-fi D&D group. All trying to scavenge for parts to rebuild a ship. Yet, Coop is the lucky bastard that finds basically a perfectly good, headless, Mech suit and gets a sweet deal of...2 Credits. And still, doesn't pay the two credits, lol.

He repaired a lot of the systems and mangled even more. He probably salvaged a lot of weapons from other robots too.
As soon as he got megas working he probably went on a spree of salvaging, stealing and whatever else to get the parts and materials to make the weapons and then hooking all of them up to Megas’ weapons systems… unless Megas had nukes and a space battleship inside of it beforehand
@@Xeno-The-Wanderernukes, it probably did (intended for space combat and a war for survival no less), and a heavy beam cannon would sense, albeit not the ship prow. That had to be Coop adding on if not making it outright.
If Megas is ever placed in a fighting game, most of his moves should give a completely random outcome, which can be very strong or self-hurting, to honor the show.
You should also spam different inputs at random to make the moves stronger, maybe
His only reliable moves should be punching, kicking, wrestling moves etc
just have his main moveset be wrestling/grappling, and his supers/hypers/meter moves be either

Big fan of this cartoon as you can tell from my pfp, 20 years from the og 2002 pilot now and it's still a damn shame this show got swept under the rug for no reason other than money.

Megas XLR was never released in Japan, which probably limits its exposure significantly. If there's a fansubbed version, I don't think it's that easy to come across either; the few episodes that have been uploaded to Nico Nico Douga are untranslated.

SRW already has Boss and Musashi as overweight non pretty boy characters. Thinking about it, Coop is kinda like a combination of the two (Carttonishness buffonery + awesomeness).
But yeah, in a hypothetical appearance on the games, it would be better to put both Coop and Kiva to balance each other.
As for villains, apart from the squid like aliens there is the Modok parody and Coop's evil counterpart. Probably fitting as early or comedic foes.
This show had an art style straight out of those "How to draw manga" books from the early 2000's, and yet managed to be among the greatest loveletters to both the fandom and the media it was parodying at the time.

It would be a hoot to see Coop alongside other mecha protagonists. I can imagine that, being the crazy genius, would also come with some of the stranger upgrades to the other mechs, or even drawing inspiration from them for Megas' own weapons.
I'd also expect it to be either post-story where Kiva successfully returns to the future with Coop and Jamie in tow, or in an isekai moment where the group gets pulled into the plot via dimensional shenanigans.

Shows like this are not made anymore due to culture not having any desire to procreate. 2000s were notorious for constant self expression no matter how cringy, or gnarly it appeared to be. The last ditch effort was Sim bionic Titan by Tarkovskiy, and that did not last. But is there a need for that? Soon we will all have personal AI assistants creating any media we see fit for a monthly subscription. I feel like acceptance is the better virtue here.
