  • An ability showcase for Giant Robo from "Giant Robo: The Animation: The Day the Earth Stood Still".
"Giant Robo: The Animation: The Day the Earth Stood Still" is a seven episode OVA series, and the second adaption of Mitsuteru Yokoyama's manga Giant Robo. The series is distinctive for its storytelling, where the simple setup is repeatedly recontextualized as the more complex truth is gradually unraveled. Due to the detailed animation and orchestral score, the series struggled with budget, and was released over a period of about six years. The last episode in particular had a wait of over two years before its release. Three additional episodes were sold focusing on the character Ginrei, but these are not part of the main story, and two of them have a comedic and sexy tone that is not present otherwise in the series.
Due to a rights conflict with the creators of the previous live action adaptation, this OVA was heavily restricted on which characters it could include from the source material. To compensate, it instead drew characters from Mitsuteru Yokoyama's entire library of manga, which includes historical fiction such as adaptations of Chinese literature, as well as science fiction such as remote controlled mecha. Appropriately, the OVA mixes superpowered heroes and giant robots, Chinese and western styles, and a deliberate retro style. The director, Yasuhiro Imagawa, went on to provide a similar mix of martial arts and mecha in his later series "G Gundam", and created other crossover tributes to a single artist's work in series like "Getter Robo Armageddon" and "Shin Mazinger Edition Z: The Impact!".
According to various sources, this series was meant to be simple one part of a larger epic. While the OVA did not have any sequels or prequels, Yasuhiro Imagawa later served as writer for the manga "Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Burned", which follows many of the details proposed for the expanded world of the OVA. However, there are significant differences in tone and characterization, so it should not be expected to be a straightforward expansion.
"Giant Robo: The Animation: The Day the Earth Stood Still" has previously appeared in the Super Robot Wars α and Super Robot Wars 64.
For clarity, the subtitles here are not mine.

    ロボにしがみついて激しい動きや爆発に耐えれる

For decades, idea that super robot was built by protagonist's late father was a staple of mecha genre. Then Yasuhiro Imagawa shown us how that would affect boy's relationship with the machine.
    Then he did it again.

I had previously translated the character list from the Japanese Wikipedia article for Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still in response to a comment on a previous video. Just for convenience, I'm copying the same translation here as well.
This lists the Mitsuteru Yokoyama manga that the character originates from, as well as their names from both Giant Robo and their source manga. Note that some of the characters don't appear in the OVA itself, but are in other related materials such as Newtype 100% Comics Giant Robo, The Day the Earth Burned, and the novelization of the OVA.

I know this that there is no one on whole of internet who knows about super robo shows as you in this channel. And not just mecha of modern anime. Can you tell which are your top 10 shows based on story, robo, etc.
can you tell if you did make a story what would you do something different which is never before done in a super robo show.

    • @l_thammy

I actually started this video series to encourage myself to watch more mecha, so you might be surprised at some of the stuff I haven't seen yet. There are definitely some people out there who know more than I do,
Personally, I like to watch things from more of a cerebral point of view, so I put concept and narrative before action and mecha design. Those are important to me too, but even if a mech is less interesting when it stands on a shelf of when it fights, it can still be exciting to me if the ideas around it are interesting.
So if I wanted to make a super robot series, or really any kind of mecha series, I'd first want to look at the real world or other fiction to try to come up with an interesting concept that would mesh well with mecha. From there, I'd look at other mecha to find elements that fit well with my idea and make them fit.
I've always found it a little difficult to talk about favourites because I like so many things, so do you mind if I make that question less restrictive? Let's start with a top ten of mecha things I've covered in this video series so far.
      1. Genesis Survivor Gaiarth. Actually, I thought this one was a bit of a stretch since it's primarily about androids rather than powered armour or piloted robots, but I loved it enough that I wanted to include it anyway. It's effectively a fantasy, but instead of building on standard fantasy tropes, the other humanoid races and monstrous creatures are all various robots which were originally built for some purpose and kept on going after that. It feels something like a cross between Guilty Gear and the best of early Dragon Ball.
      2. Tenamonya Voyagers. This is just a really funny show thanks to Paraila being such an over the top rowdy criminal, getting the heroines into more trouble than she gets them out of. Besides the fact that it was never finished, I did have a little problem in that I felt that the action, while very well animated, was too stylized and ended up being a little difficult to read.
      3. Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still. This is the sort of anime that you can study as literature. It's all about a constantly evolving context, where your understanding of what's happening is radically different from one episode to the next. It's also bombastic in every way, with the setting being an epic of epics, the deliberate retro style and music making things even more grandiose.
      4. Yatterman (2008). Another very funny show. It's just totally devoted to comedy. Entire characters or episodes could be based on a parody, pun, or meta jokes. All the Yattermecha are silly characters of their own. The weaknesses is that it's not as well animated as other shows, and most of the battles are often less traditional action battles and more of vehicles for comedy themselves which might not gel with the traditional super robot anime watcher.
      5. FLAG. Essentially a mecha anime where you're on the outside looking in rather than following the actual pilots. It's probably one of most believable and contemporary settings of a mecha anime. It's not as action-heavy as other mecha series, but it's very visually interesting due to the documentary style.
      6. Kishin Corps. I've often heard Japanese media criticized for its failure to acknowledge Imperial Japan's role in World War 2, so I greatly appreciate this series for having Imperial Japan's military as the villainous faction and explicitly criticizing the Axis powers. It still manages to be a fun adventure even though it's responsibly handling serious topics, and doesn't come across as being any darker than it needs to be.
      7. Bubblegum Crisis. This is a classic depiction of cyberpunk in anime, predating Ghost in the Shell and the animated adaptation of Akira, although I don't think it's as biting as those are. Instead it's just a treat to look at and listen to. The original voice actresses are singers who provide new songs every episode, and the animation is one of the best I've seen in the medium.
      8. MADOX-01. A perfect short and sweet story, just about a guy going about on a fairly regular day that goes massively off kilter. It isn't a zany comedy, but just feels silly because the whole situation is built on a lot of confusion.
      9. Mars. I like Mitsuteru Yokoyama's manga better than Go Nagai's, but his action isn't great. This OVA feels like it's the best mix of remixing the material, making it more tense and exciting while still being a fairly accurate adaptation. Unfortunately, this is one that was never finished.
      10. Battle Clash. I'd actually say I'm an even bigger video game expert than I am a mecha expert, so I had already made some Battle Clash videos before the Super Robot Showcase playlist and just threw one of them in since I thought it fit. I enjoy a lot of the lesser known Nintendo titles, and I'm totally serious when I say that ST Falcon would be my biggest want for a Smash Bros character, although I don't think it's very likely beyond its appearance as a Spirit in Smash Ultimate.
I also feel strongly about some of the works I've covered that are inclusive of different audiences, even if they aren't aimed at me personally. Gowapper 5 Gordam was a fun if fairly typical mecha superhero team series, but even though I'm a man, I appreciate that we got a female lead so early in the Super Robot boom. Legend of Blue Wolves isn't something that I could tell everyone to watch, but even though I'm straight, I appreciate that they collaborated with a gay magazine and made a work for a gay audience. Even its central theme where the heroes respect each others' dignity but the villains take it away feels like something that came out of that collaboration.
Next, I'll talk about some series that I like which I haven't covered on my channel yet, or haven't been able to cover because they were blocked.
      1. Mobile Suit Gundam. A lot of people prefer Zeta, but I like the original the best. I've got some interest in history, so I like how closely it draws from the Pacific Theater of World War 2 specifically, making it different from a lot of western World War 2 works. The TV series, movies, and novels all have distinctive strong points so I don't think there's a singular best version. The setting is also rich enough to support a lot of side stories, and the historical simulator styled Gihren's Greed series of games which I'm also a big fan of. I even picked up the Gundam Big Book of Tactics and Strategy which the games draw a lot of material from.
      2. Dancouga. This is one of those early works that tried to mix Super Robot and Real Robot styles. Similarly, it's a nice mix of a simple senstive story and Rambo-style one man army heroes. I've heard some complaints that it doesn't have enough action with the combined Dancouga, although I'd say that it makes up for it with the amount of action it provides with the separate forms and in hand to hand, and God Bless Dancouga ups the combined mecha action as well.
      3. Baldr Force EXE Resolution. This is a darker series with a big focus on moral complexity, where it's hard to clearly say which characters are good and which are evil because of their intertwining motives. While I enjoyed it overall, there's one episode in particular that I felt was in extremely bad taste and could be triggering to some viewers, so it's very hard to recommend for that reason. The action is not that good, using some pretty unimpressive CG. I did try to make a video since I liked the series but I couldn't get it to feel right so I had to give up.
      4. Zeorymer. This is another dark anime, although much simpler. It's not quite horror, perhaps closer to a tragedy, but it is nonetheless very tense. It's clear from the start that something is wrong and the viewer gradually learning what it is. Zeorymer seems to be more overwhelmingly powerful than most Super Robots but you're left wondering if it's that's a good thing here.
      5. Medabots. Came out of the first wave of Pokemon imitators, and is one of the longest surviving franchises from that time, perhaps due to being a much sillier take on the concept. The animation is great and the action is good, although I think that the parts-swapping mechanic is more interesting than the Medaforce that's introduced later. Sadly, Bee Train only worked on the adaptation of the second game, and the anime's popularity dropped when it did.
      6. Neon Genesis Evangelion. I know people are iffy on this now, but at the time it was very memorable for its aesthetic and psychological storytelling. It's often been claimed that it's a criticism of the mecha genre, but it's actually a love letter to older anime like Ideon, and I think it ends up feeling more modern than those in an enjoyable way.
      7. Tekkaman Blade. While it's often lumped together with mecha, that's only true for its looks at best. It's really just follows '70s Japanese superheroes, specifically the idea that those superheroes are tragic figures who take on hardship to do what needs to be done. The tragic characters are what make it gripping but the animation is poor, so there aren't many good fighting scenes.
      8. Astro Boy (2003). I've always wanted a good Mega Man anime, and I think this is the closest to what I was looking for. Astro Boy is called a super robot several times in the show but it's really more about a world where intelligent robots are starting to be recognized as people, and that change is bringing about conflict. It isn't primarily an action show, but when it has action it looks great. I'm still in the middle of watching this one, so maybe I'd rank it differently after I'm done.
      9. Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla. It's not my favourite kaijuu movie, but it's fun for reinterpreting Godzilla as a mecha story.
      10. The Vision of Escaflowne. A fantasy series where battles are fought with mecha. I remember liking this a lot when it aired, but it's been a long while since I've watched it and I've forgotten a lot, so I'd like to see it again.

@@l_thammy thank you for taking the time to reply. And whoever who had helped.
Your information is valuable. The way you had described the story lines. The way you had also explained the LGBT influences in some. I would avoid those.
I see that nearly 98% of Japanese mecha series are composed with a giant robo or super robo or mechas require a piolet. While the American mecha counterpart transformers are sentient with own personality. Japanese find it hard to see a robo a living being because so far no one in history has encountered such. And it is true that among people series with biological life will have a better reception dragon ball z or Jurassic park compared to giant robo or transformers
A few shows similar to independent robots in anime were brave series, i liked it as much as it's aimed at a very young audience. Giant robo was really good. I have watched.
I have watched a few, some inspired from your channel. Mazinger z infinity, getter robo Armageddon, gundam - 08ms - War in pocket - hathway -SD..., giant robo, big o, dangaioh, dangaizer, black magic 66, gunbuster, cybuster, cibusta (cybernetics guardian), steel demon, metal skin panic madox, detonator orgun. Netflix transformer was really nice.
I am on my way to maybe perhaps roughly sketch out a mech anime comic perhaps with resources. But my life is so...before i do the aliens themselves may arrive. Just joking.
I don't have anyone friends to talk about this topic. I am on my way to completing watching series in my watch list such as Gurren laagan(story seemed all time best), ninja robots, dragon head, schwarzmarken, gravion zwei...
Super robot wars generations. It would have been great if all the robots were in the episode like in the game super robot wars alpha.
There are others i have, i am unsure but heard that these were hit series in those days like tetsujin 28 movie, the brave gold goldran, now i have heard one of these two series is reall good but i am mixed up with the names if it's : knights & magic or magic knight rayath or knights if sidonia. Others i like to watch aldnoah, cassherm robo hunter, harmagaddon, break blade, document taiyo no kiba dagram, fafnse, gaogaiga, gasaraki, Babel 2, robo taekwon, steam detectives. I calculate i can finish watching them in one month with enough resources .
This is my small youtube channel. If you like to check out my animation. Thank you again for your information. - your friend once a heavenly robot Isaac 😅
