I'm from there as well! At the 3:48 mark it shows a corner shop called Derbys Tailory...that was my grandfathers barbershop in the 70's. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Although I was not born and raised there, but my mom, older sister, and my family lived there at Rockingham their whole lives! The memories i had having fun playing with the sand with my cousins at my great grandma house. She is now 91 years old! I even celebrated my birthday at her house, i was turning 6. I was born and raised in DC, but i consider Rockingham my second home. I’ve been going here since i was a toddler, I remember the many times driving under the railroad bridge I would guess which family member house we’re going too😂. I’ve even attended an elementary school there , but it was temporary, I’ve made many friends. I was 4 September 2013, the beginning of the school year and i remember when my mom told me that we would be living in Rockingham for only a month, i was so happy. I just love the scenery here, Hamlet stuck being in a time capsule just amazes me. I will always love Rockingham & Hamlet❤
Hey I just found you on here I subscribed to your channel and I was shocked your from Hamlet I live in laurinburg just down from your childhood home born and still live here yes it's sad to see our towns not like their former glory even clio bennettsville and mccoll maxton all nothing I hope people still tell the kids coming up about the stories of our local towns and keep them alive even I don't know everything that once was here but I dream of what it used to be probably the simpler days no cell phone or Internet and everything not like this crazy world now. Have a good 2024 please do a video on laurinburg if you can soon.
Thank you for watching and subscribing. I only lived in Hamlet a few years. Haven't lived there in over 30 years but I enjoy riding through there when I'm in the area. Always brings back memories, good and bad. The town is very sentimental to me. I didn't go to Laurinburg much but I do remember it.
Nice job on the video. I'm pretty sure I went to school with you there. I think we had shop class together, right next to the cafeteria. As a matter of fact I used to live about a mile down the road from your old place. My memory isn't the best these days, but pretty sure on more than one occasion, I would go to your house to play video games with you. If I'm wrong, oh well, good video either way.
Less than thirty seconds into this video and I see the fork I would take to get to my grandma's house / family's land. I grew up spending every summer and school break in this little town -- Even had my first kiss there. Hamlet will always hold a special place in my heart/mind.
Further in now -- I also rented videos from that cool store, and my aunt worked at the Convenience Corner for 20+ years. Recognized the mall where Penny's and Belk used to be. I saw lots of movies in that theater as well. The quarry always fascinated me driving by it, used to call it the dirt factory. Wild how small the world is sometimes. Thanks for this video!
That is so cool! Thank you for watching and commenting. What years did your aunt work at the convenience store? I went there all the time after school. And I think the video store was called JB Video?
My wife and I were married in Hamlet in 1968. But, we grew up in Rockingham. My Dad managed a drive-in restaurant in Hamlet for a short while right after I went to University. You missed the glory days of the two towns by about twenty years. I remember much of what you reviewed and enjoyed your story.
I've lived in Rockingham all my life. Your father had a great job. I remember when that quarry was just a ditch. Now there's a huge hole in the ground. And by the way I'm 67 years old.
My high school years were the worst years of my childhood. Wouldn't want to re live them for anything. People were just too mean. And we were just kids. I often wonder where the not so friendly one's ended up in life.
Kids are only mean because they have a rough life at home and jealous of other kids. They want to make another person have a miserable life as well. I went through a lot during school years in 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade. I also went through a lot even at home my whole childhood. My best friends were animals. They can love you no matter what we go through in life and I survived my horrific childhood. As an adult it made me a strong person mentally and physically and I let nothing stand in my way. I help feed stray animals in return. To recall one of the mean kid in my elementary school as we got into high school together he became the of the sweetest man on earth and I asked him what made him become such a great person and he told me he had excepted the Lord in his life. In our high school there was a Bible study class.
funny i came across this. i wasn't even looking for anything about Hamlet. you got there late 88. The railroad had already laid off almost everyone that worked the railyards. the rail station set empty for a spell before it was turned into a museum. Bradshaws had already closed (an ice cream place on 74 just past the lake heading towards Laurel Hill. the old red brick Georgian style hospital set right in front of the train tracks over by Jefferson Street. i lived there on Minturn close to the public library and where the old Catholic Church used to be. funny they built the Masonic temple on the old Catholic graveyard. Hamlet hospital had a nursing school. it was a 3 year program. my mother and one of her sisters noth graduated from there. i remember when a train jumped the track over by where the old Hamlet Hospital used to be and took out the bridge just behind the hospital. the hospital was about 5 to 10 yards from the bridge. there was an A&P kind of in front of the hospital and to the left just off main Street. the playground behind the church on Jefferson was behind my back yard of the house i lived in on Minturn. i liked it there but that was before everything closed.

Great storytelling ! I can definitely relate. The pace was very well done and the music is perfect. Thanks for doing this.

Randomly, I also am from North Carolina. I was born in Wilmington, when it was a MUCH smaller town.

Probably in prison or dead!☹️
