Hi Timothy, Another great, enjoyable video! The entire area near the train depot is Hamlet's Main Street Commercial Historic District, which is a national historic district. The district is the original town center and includes buildings built immediately before or between 1900 and 1940, and contain notable examples of various unique architectural styles. The building that you said might have been a hotel was, in fact, a bustling hotel during its heyday.
I just filmed Greer, SC today and think Hamlet could copy what they have done with their town center. It was very active this morning and it had some great streetscaping.
@TimothyFrench Let's hope Hamlet's leadership can begin focusing on their town's needs more effectively, as their town already has the infrastructure in place to become a really nice environment.
I recognize Hamlet mainly from a deadly factory fire that happened in 1991. The owners didn't give a RIP about employee safety. So much for "good" domestic jobs!☹️☹️☹️
When I was a kid and before they built the 74 bypass we used to have to go through hamlet to get to the beach. I remember seeing that Piggly Wiggly and there was a Hardees in Hamlet that we always stopped at. Hamlet was our half way point from Mooresville.
Thanks for sharing. When I was a kid our halfway point was a small restaurant of which I cannot remember the name. But years later I saw it sitting empty and felt sad about it. I have good memories of the place.
Thank you. I'm visiting family here and will be walking these streets in a couple weeks. I'll certainly give some of these shops my business. Nice video.❤
This was on a Tuesday afternoon. Unfortunately, a lot of our beautiful town centers are empty like this. The big chains have drawn people away from their historic centers, hoping to replace them all together. And any drive across America will show they have been quite successful. It is my hope and belief that people are growing tired of this and want to return to a vibrant town center once again with a variety of independent businesses to choose from. That’s for watching and asking the question.
It is like a lot of those former mill towns down there-Raeford, Lumberton, Laurinburg, Hamlet, et. al. Just sad. This is what happens when American jobs are sent overseas. You should talk to the old timers in these towns.
To satisfy your curiosity about Hail Mary's, it's a sports bar.
Love it. I should have known.
Thanks for sharing. 👍
Thank you! A place to go while I'm up there. Looking for places to eat and hang out.

Sounds like a terrible fire. Thanks for sharing

Which day of the week did you go to Hamlet? Was it a Sunday? It seems quite?

Yep. I will never understand how sending our jobs away helps Americans.
Seems kinda dead!😢
The town center was, but outside of the area it was busy at the chains and franchises.
