I love my clean 100% natural face cream that's free of harmful things like preservatives, crack cocaine, leukaemia, eyelashes of a newborn piglet, machine oil, Doritos chips dust, crushed asphalt and tapeworms. I didn't even know I should look out for these ingredients in my skincare, I'm so scared, but thank god THIS organic beauty company takes care of me.

Sweetheart, clean you should really look up what they mean by clean beauty because they’re taking preservatives out of the skin care and out of the make up so then your stuff rots faster so then you have to buy it more often clean beauty is such a lie and James if you believe me on that or think I’m an idiot for believing that, let me know. It’s filtering over to men’s products too. There used to be a L’Oréal advert where a man was going up an escalator waggling his eyebrows at an attractive woman - but oh no! She wasn’t interested because of the bags under his eyes. ‘She thinks you look tired!’ No she doesn’t. You’re staring at her. She’s probably planning her exit.

Swede here! The name of the chain banning kids from buying certain skin care product is not called Apotek. "Apotek" just means pharmacy in Swedish. The name of the chain is Apotek Hjärtat, translating into Pharmacy Heart.
With that said, I think it's good that you brought it up. It should be mentioned though that these last couple of weeks, the new and harmful skin care trends among young children has been hotly debated in Swedish media. The pharmacy chain did not start the debate by implementing this ban. Their stance is rather a reaction to it after the issue was raised in media, as far as I know.

Tbh I started noticing some influencers on TH-cam discussing more expensive brands and products like perfume and I suspected the reason they were discussing and reviewing (favorably, most of the time) these items is because of the higher commission they make from affiliate links. When I was working there (2014-2021) you had to be 13. However. Once we got a credit card (I know we’re talking about the rewards program but I have to add this because I’m still mad about it), they didn’t care if we asked ANYONE to apply. So they’d go through the CC application and then when they put their birthday in (if they could remember their SSN) it would deny them and tell us the reason (applicant is not 18). That was really the last straw for me. They promised when we got the credit card that they wouldn’t give us goals. That was true for about 3 months and then they pushed pushed pushed us to get CC apps. It was disgusting.
But for BI, maybe it’s changed but it used to be 13. However, we never had to enter a year. The default year in the system was 1800 😂

I was in Ulta yesterday and a mom was in there with her 10 y/o daughter. The girl was just testing everything in the makeup section and telling her mother what she wanted. Just dropping stuff in the little orange bag. She's 10. And her mom was like "Oh yeah that's so pretty" like *encouraging* her kid to get mascara, eyeshadow, blush, etc. And these were not cheap brands. These are like Lancome, Fenty, Estee Lauder. Like WHY are you spending $70 on a foundation for your 10 y/o??
These parents need to PARENT their kids. Stop trying to be their friends. Set some boundaries. She's 10. She doesn't need a $30 mascara. There are grown people with full-time jobs who can't afford a $30 mascara.
Then the parents get upset and wonder why no one wants to be around their kids or accomodate them. Um. Bc they're brats.

The branding and set up was very similar to Sephora so I'm not surprised that Sephora was unsuccessful there. They have a plethora of cosmetics stores and skincare shops to choose from. And Chicor seems like it would fill the same niche as Sephora. Besides, who really shops in store much anyway? Especially when delivery in Korea and online shopping is so much easier and accessible.

Yeah, the whole “clean” and “natural” beauty is just marketing. Too many people think that it’s regulated in some way or is some how going to automatically mean what each individual person thinks is “clean.” But, like you said, since it’s not regulated, there’s no specific definition. It’s just whatever a brand wants to define it…which is usually whatever will work for them. And, you’re very right, it really seems to be focused on those who truly don’t understand it and just jump on the bandwagon based on what they’ve heard from, usually, also misinformed people…

I agree that a company needs to make skin care brand for teens…sort of like Bumble….but maybe a bit more than “play.” My acne started at 9. I truly needed stuff with Salicylic Acid. Sephora/Ulta could even have a section that would have products that are safe for their skin-even if unnecessary. Have a skin type lines: acne prone, normal skin line, etc.(a simple system). It would be good to have educational displays, pamphlets, and so on about why you shouldn’t use retinol under the age of 25, unless a derm. prescribes it. When to go to a derm. What skin cancer looks like, what happens when you exfoliate at a young age…when you should start…I would think 16ish. But they are going to do it either way, so best they make a line that has very gentle exfoliation like Lactic Acid/PHAs instead of AHAs and microbeads,. Hell, they could have an eye cream targeting dark circles for those who have allergies and are genetically prone to them (I had them my whole life and would have started using one around 11 if they’d made one for me that wasn’t too thick). They also need to make sure the containers are bright-similar to Drunk Elephant-and kick off a huge marketing campaign aimed at preteens. “Made just for teens to care for your young and evolving skin.” Or some such slogan with some TikTok star(s) as their spokesperson(s). Having taught, most parents don’t watch what is in products…many don’t even realize their kids are vaping. This could be both a helpful untapped market if done right (safe products for teens).
I taught middle school and hate that kids (especially those 12 and up) who behave themselves, and are polite will pay for others behavior. They are finally embracing sunscreen and want to care for their largest organ, and we kick them out!
I taught middle school, and saw a very nice group of preteens at Ulta the other day (probably about 7th Grade which is 12-13). I thanked them and said they were setting an awesome example. The best part, two of them were boys learning about skincare from the girls. One girl was blessing a boy out for not wearing sunscreen everyday (bit loud or rudely). I look roughly ten years younger than I am because my mom made us wear sunscreen as kids…I told them about it and my actual age. He bought some. After that, I was bombarded with a bunch of questions and was reached. Then how to read labors and look up what “active ingredients do” on their cell phones. I warned them from retinol and AHAs/Glycolic Acid…told them it would damage their skin barrier and cause acne (that nah be a lie…but it scared them into not buying stuff with it in it). I even showed them some good dupes. The store was slammed so I didn’t mind stepping in since they seemed really willing to learn. Most of what I told them, I’ve learned here or on PillowTalk Derm. I recommended both channels to them as well. The whole experience almost made me miss teaching that age…almost. Maybe they could offer classes to preteens about skin care at their age and what products they might need for different issues… and what they don’t need and why. Kids always need a reason “why.” For instance, “Tackling Acne as a Teen….and when to go to a dermatologist.” Could be a Saturday class. Damnit, Sephora or Ulta should hire me!

I somewhat disagree, people are too heavily dependent on a few random influencers reviews, and dont seem to take the vast amounts of possible differences with the skin, the tone, the problem areas, the allergies, the diets etc into consideration, and never do any research outside of a few videos. And it never fails, people get upset and accuse the influencer of lying to them just because it didnt work for them. Take the initiative and do the research yourself, because influencers arent workers of the company and dont know/ will disclose every piece of information about the product, nor should we expect them to, or be critized if they dont. They dont know everyones struggle areas or skin types, theyre focused on their own and what works for them.
Same thing applies to kids, why are we depending on the influencers to know who their annonymus viewers are in order to put out warnings instead of depending on the parent to do that?

Everyone's already corrected you about 'Apotek' but I thought, "I see him avoiding saying Hjärtat" (it's difficult to pronounce so I get it!)--tbh I am glad they're doing this, I hope all the other big pharmacies here, Kronans Apotek, Apoteket, etc. will follow suit. Sephora is here in Sweden and it doesn't have a very big presence. We already have KICKS (which is like Ulta) and Lyko, both of which pretty much already cover what Sephora offers. Part of Sephora's problem when launching abroad is that some brands already have established presences with other retailers and there's no exclusivity offered with Sephora. The Sephora where I live (Gbg) is abysmally small and the selection anemic. Not to mention that their pricing just isn't competitive. I think Sephora did (and does) well in the US because when they launched (late 90s), no one was a high-end one-stop shop like them. Cosmetics were purchased at either the drugstore or department store, same for fragrances. The shopping experience at Sephora felt high end and exciting at the time. Almost 30 years later, Ulta is probably their biggest competitor and I think the only reason Ulta hasn't killed them is because Ulta's main market is a lower price point.

I mean, I DO have problems with several of the ingredients the clean list sephora had includes (and some off the list) but at least having the label to sort by shortened some of the label scouring I had to do. But then again, I don't shop at sephora anymore because I've learned that Korean skincare tends to be more effective for less than half the cost and I just refuse to spend $60 on a moisturizer at the mall anymore when I can get a really good Korean moisturizer for $20-30. I still have to label scour, though. But like, almost all Korean cleansers I've considered buying, ever, were already sls free because it's just not commonly used there for the face.

Clean beauty is like when they forced companies to formulate hair dyes without ammonia (which in the concentrations in dyes are safe for professional use, like a hairdresser who dyes multiple heads per day), and the consumers forced then the use of ammonia substitutes which are less safe but smell less.
Or parabens, which had a demonization and harsh campaign against for nothing.
Most of the times they keep out of the formulas things that are completely harmless (just a difficult name or a bad reputation when ingested -but cosmetics are never meant to "penetrate" inside of the skin barrier) or never meant to be used in a formula anyway (like rocket fuel).

Olive Young is amazing I only purchase from them, that said I do think that it is unfortunate that even though they do global sales while their skincare can be for everyone, their makeup leaves much to be desired due to the ranges. I am fortunate enough that I don't have this issue but as an Asian myself and knowing how popular our brands are now worldwide, it would be amazing if they could increase their shade ranges as an acknowledgment to their overseas fans :3

Ulta has their own version of "clean", they call it Conscious Beauty. They list all the same avoided ingredients (ugh 😖), but also include brands that use recycled or recyclable packaging. I wish the FDA and other countries' equivalents would put out a legal definition of "clean" and "natural" (like "organic" has) to help everyone sift through the BS. 💜🖤💜🖤

I think the reason why Sephora Korea cannot break into the market is because American products also do not appeal to Koreans, so even limited products which are not carried by Shinsaegae (their department store) are just not clicking.

Sephora just has bad timing. When I lived in Japan in the late 2010s, I wanted Sephora to open there so bad because Japanese makeup is on the more natural and I wanted to duplicate the full glam look that westerners were into at the time. I bought Maybelline and Revlon lipsticks and eyeshadows thinking I could finally get some pigmented colors but nope, they were made for the Asian market and were sheer AF lol. But now that the west has shifted towards natural-looking makeup/skincare focused beauty, there's no reason to step into a Sephora when Asian beauty brands have had years to perfect products that achieve the same look at a better price.

I’m not surprised Sephora’s South Korean branch is closing down when they are trying to compete with Olive Young which is extremely popular not to mention affordable also popular makeup brands also have stand alone stores that also sell their own “limited edition” products that big stores might not sell or have limited quantities of so they get major shopping traffic when they do these launches.
Tbh the majority of my makeup is Korean because of the infused skincare benefits and the majority of my items are affordable and exceptional quality.

I live in Seoul and olive young is soooooo perfect. It literally has everything. But there are competitors; innusfree , nature republic , etude house, etc. there’s just no need for Sephora, unless you have a darker skin tone, since Korean brands don’t have lots of darker colors ready to tests in store. That’ll be a bit of a problem now ,,,,,

Brands really should jump on the fun kids line that is totally safe and inexpensive. Brand loyalty is a big thing. Parents will by the kids line from their favorite brand and then those kids will use the expensive stuff as they grow.

I feel like another reason Sephora have done well this time around is the closing of department stores in the UK. You used to be able to get high end beauty from Debenhams, Co-operative society, John Lewis (still around but have closed some big sites) etc. Although Boots have really expanded their range, I feel like there’s still a gap which Sephora have been able to slip into that wasn’t necessarily there when they first tried (purely theory though!)

In Korea sephora is only really good for us foreigners here. Now POC in Korea don't have easy access to products that work for them, and we can kiss goodbye to eyeshadow palettes that arent just the generic poorly pigmented neutral, coral, or pink palettes that are basically all the same no matter the brand unless you know where to look 🙃
