The 'Fake Wealth' Industry Making Influencers Look Rich - Instagram VS Reality

  • One thing that’s always baffled me as an influencer, is other influencers showing off their wealth as content.
Videos of massive house tours, making music videos about how rich you are to me seems… tacky I guess.
But there does seem to be this odd industry of influencers pretending to be rich, in order to pretend they are successful.
This is now such a popular thing for influencers and wannabe influencers to do, that there is a whole industry that exists in order to make influencers look rich.
I want to share some of the rich influencer services that are available and then take a look at those who…. don't even pay to fake it…. they just badly photoshop their fake life.

I work as a florist at a us grocery store chain in downtown Chicago. I have a lot of contact with influencers as my set has become a popular photo op. It’s so weird they just tend to act so strangely, putting their Louis v bag on my cart and shooing me out of the way so they can take pictures and make content while I just stand there waiting to restock the flowers. I find it so funny and bizarre but they just come in all dressed up, completely take over and then ignore everyone in the store. I hope I end up in the back of their content one day giving a major side eye 👀

I work in a luxury clothing store and we've once had a girl that told us she was an influencer and personal shopper. She asked for two empty shopping bags because "hers were damaged last time" and filmed herself leaving our store with these two bags, acting as she just had a shopping spree in our store.

grew up with a super wealthy friend. She walks and metros everywhere and unless you know her well you most likely would not know she's wealthy, until she invites you over to her castle of a house and apologise for it being "unfinished" because the new sgraffito plaster for her ceiling is only half finished...T_T never felt so poor in my life. She never brags, but she did educate me that quality is worth more than brands. You would never see her carry LV or Chanel, but she would go to some Italian boutique to buy custom made leather gloves with cashmere lining. Even though her family owns many castles, mansions and chateaus all across Europe, she never brags about it and she barely has social media presence. I feel like all those "influencer" posing with private jets, posing with Gucci bags, wearing Balenciaga logo jacket, or whatever, only have a faint idea of what "rich" people are. The majority of wealthy people are actually super educated, quiet, and actually just don't give a shit about luxury goods. They may pay a lot for luxury experience, and buy quality items, but they would never go out of their way to buy Hermes bag, because they'd rather pay more for customised exotic bags with luxury service.

I'm guessing you've never heard of the Kardashians as well as all the other mega rich celebrities out there? Just because you had a good experience with one rich friend, does not mean all of the mega rich are like this. They are pushing luxury brands and glamorous lifestyles on their social media just as much as these fake influencers are, usually more so since they get sponsored by luxury brands. Let's not put the rich on a pedestal. They are just as loud, wasteful, status driven, and toxic as influencers.

Yes and no. I think when you're that wealthy it's more of a security risk to be flamboyant about wealth. If you are it definitely can make you a target and makes it harder to enjoy outings. I think they also learn wealth is finite and easy to mismanage. Wealthy people still flaunt and do all these shenanigans it's just not for the public consumption and it's done passive aggressive.

People are so obsessed with money, status, luxury items, brand names-especially if they really can’t afford those things. I went through a flood in 2019 and lost EVERYTHING (along with thousands of other people) and I realized how stupid I was to care how many coach bags I had, or how large my collection of designer perfumes was. Because it was all gone in the matter of minutes and I can never afford to replace it all.
At the end of the day, your mark on the world and how you left it when you depart is all that really matters. Not what you wore, or what label you maxed out credit cards for to make your friends jealous. Vanity seems to be all people care about now and it’s so sad.

So true. I lost my father in 2013 and my brother in 2017. Both were good men, kind, good to their communities and gentle souls, and very well known in our smaller community. My dada had lived in the same town his entire life. He was active in volunteer work, Habitat for Humanity, community outreach, volunteer first responder. My dad’s wake took 2 hours longer than planned. My brother was also a volunteer, a Boy Scout and all around dependable guy. My brother’s took about 4 hours longer than planned (about 7 hours total) and was done just after New Year’s, so cold, and people stood outside in line for hours, while it was snowing, to pay their respects. Our feet were numb from standing for so long but we didn’t want to turn anyone away after they waited. Neither was a brand name kind of guy, except maybe John Deere😂. All this to say, you can’t take anything material with you but I firmly believe you get to take the thoughts and prayers of people who care for you and those two were richer than anyone else I have ever met.😊

I’d like to point out that growing up seeing all this on social media (born in 2000) was heavily harmful to my self esteem growing up lower middle class. It still sometimes bothers me. I catch myself posting things on social media that make it seem like I’m doing well, like my freshly done nails or my new hair dye job or the car I share with my roommate and in reality we’re scraping by. Social media has made us feel like we have to show the best part of ourselves and our lives to feel accepted. I feel embarrassed to invite people over because I live in a trailer house. But we own that trailer out right and don’t have to pay anything but utilities and land tax once a year. But the world says trailers are trashy. It’s just things like this that make me think. I don’t want to hide my children from the internet but I also don’t want them to experience the damage I did at a young age.

My mom’s work friend is a perfect example. She owns like 10 mink coats. All of them worth $10-20,000 at minimum. She got them for $100-200 each because she went to estate sales and bid on them. If you can create the illusion that you "belong" there, then is everyone else's "belonging" just based on illusions (as opposed to a skill or a character trait or work experience)? Some of the wealthier students are also so out of touch with reality. They are so inundated with luxury and expense on their social media and among their friends that they can’t perceive the reality of most people anymore. There was a "beauty guru" on TH-cam that I used to follow religiously, but as she became more successful, her video content really started to change and it put me right off. She would do these massive unboxing videos containing mostly PR, but sometimes gifts from subscribers, and her attitude could only be described as a spoiled brat, greedily ripping into packages, and literally throwing them aside to get to the next one. My heart broke for any of the independent brands that would send these handmade, meticulously crafted packages, only to have their products tossed into a pile. I understand that receiving PR is a part of the job, and I have no problems with the occasional unboxing, especially if the person receiving it thinks there's something particularly unique or exciting about it, but it makes a world of difference when the influencer is grateful and/or humble about it.

Very thoughtful. Back in the 1990's, before TH-cam, I was a staffer at Old Navy in a shopping mall, and at the other end of the mall was A&F, and it was a huge rivalry about whose big paper shopping bag with handles that you were carrying around the mall. One day our boss told us staffers that we could not just give out our shopping bags for guests to take out and carry around the mall, that our guests actually had to buy something, even if it were just a keychain, to be given a big shopping bag to carry around the mall, while their friends from other cliques were carrying big Abercrombie bags around the mall. So funny.

It’s actually shocking how easy it can be to fake wealth or vacations, etc. online. Like I live in Ontario, Canada (and mention this all the time), right near a beach (a lake), and during summer, people have palm trees everywhere. There’s even a beach near me that brings in massive palms every summer, so you can literally go to a lakeside beach that makes it look like you’re somewhere tropical. I post a lot of summery/beach pics, and once again, I mention I live in Canada all the time, and yet people still assume I live near the ocean (usually in California) or somewhere tropical. If I wanted to, I could absolutely lie and fake that I live somewhere else with pretty minimal effort. I wouldn’t do this, because I’d feel horrible about lying, but it’s wild how easy it would be to do if I wanted to.

There is just a whole genre of “influencers” that push things way too far for the sake of views, such as Myka Stauffer adopting a special needs child for views and then “rehoming” this child like he was a pet that wasn’t house trained. Many are much less extreme examples of pushing certain diets, or preaching toxic positivity and ableist ideals. They are not portraying a realistic lifestyle and sometimes even shame others for not living the way they do. I definitely feel like this is a massive trend, especially with GenZ, I find it so strange 😫 like just live life, find joy in the little things, not fake how much money you have for social media & rub it in peoples faces! 🙄 it’s just really sad. It can definitely make you feel like you’re not good enough or not where you’re meant to be! pls do a pt2 James! ❤

its surprising how far some influencers go to fake a situation but for get that they have all this younger viewers who actually look up to them and what they put out as content and am glad someone is talk about this 🧡🧡.

I personally think that constantly flashing wealth further stigmatizes those of us who are poor and the negative outlook on influencers altogether. Sometimes, it can even feel alienating and discouraging!

It's jealousy and reality. I mean you can't be constantly basing how you feel over what people do with their own lives. That's not healthy neither can you make others responsible for your feelings but on the other hand it's easy to compare yourself if you are already down about your situation.

I have 4 kids, ages 22, 21, 19, and 18. My 18 and 19 year olds both unsubscribed from TikTok and Insta bc they "were spending too much time on it." I think they just didn't like the pressure. But either way... peace is just a click away!

My husband and I have a luxury sports car, we’re not super rich or anything, it was years of hard work. When we go out to have dinner and we come out of the restaurant we always find someone with a fake or poor taste luxury brand clothing item taking a picture next to his car. Never fails. We don’t really post our stuff online so I find it hilarious that people use our car to fake it. It doesn’t apply to influencers, the everyday people that want to appear to have more, because they’re expected to have more do the same things.

      @malikagirl ปีที่แล้ว +63

Omg that's so cringe. I'd turn on my alarm to get them off the car 😂. On the other hand, I was at a shopping center when a guy was revving up the engine of an expensive sports car, then got out all peacocked out. I took a closer look at the car, it had a rental sticker on it 💀

    • @astridburke3616

@@tiffy3260 It’s both, you can tell someone genuinely likes the car cause they’ll talk to my husband about it, and then you can spot the photo opportunity. My point was that it’s not just “influencers” doing it, some people do it too, to imitate influencers.

Very interesting takes! I think you're right, social media is now saturated with this either completely fake, or exaggerated "aspirational" lifestyle stuff, and people are getting bored of it... it's not even mildly interesting or creative to spam people's feeds with the same rented supercar or a hundred empty designer shopping bags.

It actually seems exhausting to appear wealthy if you're not. I'd rather be a bit broke and have the freedom to just post my makeup and my girls nights out 😂 seriously though I feel like it must affect some of these people really negatively to constantly focus on the fact that they don't actually have the money they portray to have. To be reminded that they aren't wealthy and to spend so much time on something that is ultimately costing them money rather than making them money

It's crazy to me that this is what I'm seeing. I follow you and your brother. I enjoy watching you both. I was just talking about this very thing with my husband last night. I LOVE LOVE that you decided to discuss this at length. Thank you for this. It's so easy to fool people into believing you are living a life you are not. It's crazy to me. Social media has created a new level of con artists. While it may not be illegal to take pictures and misrepresent yourself, it can be VERY harmful to some who are viewing it. It causes a lot of people to over consume and become obsessed with having a life that honestly isn't attainable to most people. It's very telling.

I once was at a dinner with a senior(ish) manager from our US HQ. He spent a significant amount of time going on about his Apple shares, how much he’d made on them (we didn’t work for Apple), his vacation home, etc.
It was very tone deaf…and had the opposite effect to the one he intended. Most of us there were British or Irish and it’s extremely cringe to brag about money here!
We were all swapping side eyes 👀 and trying to stifle giggles into our wine glasses 😂

I completely agree with you. I am turned off by creators who show wealth and mindless consumption for its own sake. I laughed at the empty shopping bags, as I've seen a few acquaintances who styled their closets with them, complete with tissue paper, as if a high-end dressing room. So many follow and believe this to be aspirational, incurring debt and always feeling as if they're falling short.
I love to see personal collections that have meaning or history, usually the sort that's acquired over time, with each item having a story. (Antiques Roadshow junkie here!) I watch skincare and makeup creators to discover new things, get a sense if they'll work for me, and learn techniques, not to simply buy everything under the sun.
I went down a rabbit hole during the pandemic, watching van life channels and trying to figure out if I could afford a van big enough to fit my dogs. 😂 I began to realize that many of the fake influencers had very expensive vans, rose gold fittings, macrame plant holders, and a hat, as they drank their pour-over while watching a gazillion dollar sunrise out the back door. Completely indistinguishable from each other, and unrealistic. Some didn't even have a shower or toilet in their vans, and I can't imagine that racing to a gas station to pee and do a public bathroom sponge bath was all that glamorous. I appreciate honesty and realistic expectations. I'm thrilled for the success of the few creators I follow, and part of that is the genuine knowledge they impart, rather than meaningless consumerism for its own sake. You and Robert are among those few for me, and I appreciate how down to earth you both are.

Love this! Ps do part 2! Just bc these content farms & other *extreme* examples referenced were in China, for ex, it was used to show that these SAME things & similar tactics DO occur in the Western world; and that the SAME mindset, as well as playbook is shared by plenty of current well known/up & coming influencers on insta/tik tok… if anything, the proof is that it has trickled down into mainstream society and one starts to see the ideology affecting how, & what, popular ppl post; & also, playing a role in the content or posts of ppl you know personally- or even, ppl in your own friend group… bc everyone feels pressure or expectations to be rich & flaunt it, or they feel they need to lie/front in regards to things that reflect their wealth &/or status.
    Great job!
