Having been stuck in a rut of playing the same stale games for the past five to ten years, in six months you've introduced me to literally dozens of amazingly fun and amazingly affordable games. You are the best thing to happen to my life in the last half of 2021.
This is the video that gave Vampire Survivors the initial push into virality. This means Splattercat caused the Bullet Heaven game flood in the last year!
I've recently discovered this channel, and I watch way more of it than I thought I would. I mostly don't like playthroughs, but I like this dude. It's also pretty awesome how much content he has posted. There's gotta be a thousand videos...
When I started playing this game I wanted to use it as a filler for streaming, more like a game I play when I don't want to play something else or if I am waiting that I can quickly pop up and play a round. Instead, it has now become a main game for me to play and stream. I really hope they go down the route of "Ascension" type style, like clicker games, where you can reset everything to get further bonuses. The updates should definitely not be focused on that, but it would be a lot of fun to replay again back from 0 and not have max upgrades every round (sure, you can just reset skills, but if I have the ability to be stronger I want to choose that option, especially if resetting gives no benefit).
This game is the very definition of a Classic Indy Game! I'm pretty old(45). Just the kind of game I loved as a kid. If you like gameplay over graphics!
You convinced me to buy it so I will say 3 things related to the game now that I've had some time with it 1. Lack of impressive OPness can be rectified with leveling certain weapons to 8, having the weapons matching item in your inventory (any level) and grabbing a treasure chest. (Weapon evolve system) 2. Matches can go to a max of 30 minutes. 3. You can left or right click on the game to control your character (runs at the mouse) which can let you get more precise control over the knives than just the 8 directions, though no way to aim it without walking.
This game brings back memories of days sitting on the floor in front of the tv, with a sega control in hand and spending hours of endless fun. No game strategies, no stories with plot twists or super realistic graphics, just hours and hours of fun. Good choice today Splatt.
Steam reviews now have heaps of shouts out to splat-cat. You've done a great thing for these developers. But damn looks like the developers are doing a great thing in their own right, the game looks amazing!
Heh, it seems like this episode was an effective advocate for this game. A lot of people on Steam seem to be reporting that they bought the game immediately after watching the video! The great price was tough to resist after just listening to Splattercat gush.
Splat "it has like 6 reviews" Splatts community 4 days later: it now has close to 800. Really awesome to see how your video made such a huge difference for this game/team, you rock!
I've been playing this for hours now and really love the low skill ceiling and high skill floor, couple things I've found: - The knife is much better when using controller, you don't just get 8 directions you can be super accurate with it. - if you have the level 2 whip you can face the other way during between the first and second swing to get double damage on one side - Early game crowns (+10% XP) is the best set-up for a good run
Splatt' you've worked your magic again ! I don't know how you manage to find such gems but I sure am thankful, super thankful in fact. Watching you play was not far from hypnotic and seeing the power fantasy build up is a joy.
Edit : I forgot to mention that giving such publicity to the game forces respect. You help that game a lot by doing so, even more than you help us finding those rare jewels. You made me discover Battle Brothers, one of the best games I ever played. You are a f*cking hero man. I bought it and I must say it is very good indeed. Reached level 72 and really felt like an overpowered badass mage at the end. All I need now is more content. Another amazing suggestion, thanks a lot.
Addressing that 'seen everything burnout' is super valuable to me as a consumer. You guys that do this for a job hold the most vauble opinions for me as someone with much less time. The one thing I'd love to know from guys like you SplatterCat is what games have stuck with you over the years after the thousands you've played.
I saw this on my steam discover queue and dismissed it. After watching you play and talk about it for 15 mins, I just bought it. Looks super fun. Thanks again for another gem.
When you said Robotron I about lost it. That was one of the top go-to games in the 80's. I had forgot how many hours I spent on it. Definitely got this game marked down purchase. Looks really fun.
I am so thankful for this! I instantly got the game and have been playing it for the last 14h, lol. It is an amazing start and I hope it gets developed further into something even more amazing. Thank you, Splattercat!
Bought the game based upon your review. 7 hours later had all the present achievements and also a very enjoyable morning. Keep the recommendations coming.
I bought this game in April, & have kept playing this regularly. Such a surprisingly good game, and I'm saying this as someone who usually steers clear from "hardcore" leveling-bullet hell type of game. And I was pleasantly surprised to have heard that this game took off since Splatt's video!
After watching you playing this game I went and bought it the next day. I love it. It reminds me of gaming on table top games in the 80's when my parents would take us to the pub. I've already lost hours to this game. Thanks for bringing back the memories Splat. ☺️
I saw all these positive comments, but then I saw the game and I was like, "Mm, nah, looks lame." Ten minutes later and I NEED this to come to the Switch! This game looks so damn fun!! If they can really flesh it out in early access, and balance it right, I think this could be a genuine hit.
I introduced my husband to your videos today. He likes them. He suggested you make a merchandise shirt that has maxed out stats and says "Check out my OPness" 😂
Yeah well taking exp bonuses are also replacing a power or weapon that could make the difference between dying and living too, so it's not something that is a definite no-brainer. Also you have a limit to how many abilities you can have so at max level it eats up a full slot and does nothing.
I'm so glad this game absolutely blew up in popularity, streamers gave this game great exposure and it is a really addictive, fun game that is frequently getting new content
I watched this video for 10 minutes and bought the game, the next 6 hours was non stop playing! Thanks for the suggestion! Also this is my first video of yours I have watched, definitely gonna check out more of your vids now :)
ooooOOh DOUBLE TAP a few hours after initially commenting to say, hot dang! This looks like extremely my sort of thing, and for CDN$2.99 !?!? Insta-buy. Thanks again Splatty.
It's a great thing your doin with these videos. Not only for us gamers, but for the developers too. This was well worth the $3, and I would have NEVER known about it. Not to mention you probably increased sales on this game 10 fold. A winfal well deserved by whoever made this game. Hats off to you bro.
Wow. I just saw the first 5 Minutes of the video, bought it and played for 2h straight. This game just flows so well, when hundreds of enemies are on screen! Quite addictive. Sound design definitely has the now classic increasing pitch for reward pling.
This game is like arcade games I played in the 80's would have been like if they were actually cooler and prettier tbh. Really like this and had to get it to try it out. The other oldschool arcade-like game I rather like on Steam is Vectorio.
A trick with the whip is that the whip projectiles fire out one after the other, so if you turn around at exactly the right time, you can make both projectiles go in the same direction. This can be very useful to take out boss mobs, or carve through hordes. Additionally, the whip projectile behind you is slightly higher than the one in front of you, which is an important detail to figure out to be able to precisely control where you're hitting.
I love this game and am glad it's gotten attention since! It's a bit sad people still see pixel art and consider it low quality art, when this game has some nostalgic and incredibly well done pixel art, compared to most pixel art games being frankly terrible.
Instant buy! Thank you for the gameplay and impressions. This was a nice little video going back to your roots, not that I don't love all the new content as well! It's just great to have some nostalgia sometimes.
Ive not heard or read anyone say it yet, so allow me to point out the humongous amount of Castlevania easter-egging going on in this game! The book revolving around you, cross weapons, diamonds being thrown, whips, bats, skeletons throwing bones, busting candles/fire for items, etc. Very cool! This does look really fun, thanks for sharing!
Not going to lie, went and got this game Splatty and it is VERY addictive. I keep getting that "one more run" feeling and before you know it 2 hours are gone and you are like DANG! Thanks for the recommend on this one my man, you are the best!
I definitely went and immediately bought this. Played a short time, got some upgrades, bought a new character, immediately got some laughably OP build and hit lvl 60+ with 20k+ kills. Rinse, repeat, I'm hooked.
wander, theres a fun little phone game thats just like this its free to play and the way it makes money is that you watch an ad and you get to revive... kinda like adding another coin into the machine, you get to permanently skip those ads for like 2 dollars or something... first phone game i actually spent money on... and still the only one. EDIT: forgot to put the games name in here, its magic survival and it seems to have a pretty occult following
Castlevania was a huge inspiration with this game. The characters, drops and items are all inspired by Castlevania. Bible, the cash bags, dagger. ect ect.
so, it's June 2023, and i just started playing the game last week. i vaguely recall splatt doing a video in it, but i've only been watching him for a year. thought i'd go and [re?] watch the vid. considering how many VS clones have been out since- Splatt's reviewed a whole bunch, and says he gets lots more, i can't believe it's only 1-2 years old [TH-cam doesn't say when this video was posted, just that it's '1 year' old. it is funny watching splatt stumble his way thru, like how he ran from the skeleton hoard even tho he had garlic. i've only been playing a week, but when i saw that i was like, yeah, i remember when i did that.
I played a game exactly like this on my smartphone about 6 months ago. It had a lot more characters and the graphics seemed better. It was a F2P with something extra you could pay for.
I normally prefer games with fancy graphics, but you got me interested in this. I've already spent hours with it. So thanks. My mother tongue is not English, but I really enjoy how well articulated and funny you are in your videos. Keep up the good work!
You sold this game to me. Their video and screenshots didnt look like anything special but seeing it here looks like a fun callback to arcade games. Thanks for the game man.
Just wanted to comment that I really like your videos. If there is some game I really like, I watch it through, otherwise I am sleeping to your voice (no offense, its really soothing). You are actually curing my insomnia at this point. Also "They always run" and "Wanderlost" has great graphics, thank you for showing them :D Have a nice day everyone!
How to upgrade/evolve the weapons. Some of the Achievements are to upgrade some of the weapons. In order to do that you have to get them to level 8, and have the corresponding nonweapon item then kill a boss to get a chest, after meeting the criteria you'll get the upgraded weapon Axe + Candelabrador Cross + Clover Fire Wand + Spinach King Bible + Spellbinder - This is the best weapon by far Knife + Bracers Magic Wand + Empty Tome Whip + Hollow Heart
Splatty, my man! So I picked this little gem up a few days ago after watching this vid, and it is an absolute blast. The latest patch did add a fullscreen mode, via ALT+Enter or F11. Cheers!
Another game like this is on Mobile. Called Magic Survival. A little less variety in enemies but some interesting abilities and ramping difficulty. I really like it and I'm putting this title on my steam wishlist.
Spinich + Flame Wand = Meteors that pass through enemies, but limited number. Big damage but random directions. Candles + Axe = Scythes that fire out at all cardinal directions, passing through enemies. Good but questionable results. Bible+ Spellbinder = Pages that remain constant in radial distance. God Tier in damage/defenese. Requires a bit to get the Spellbinder unlocked, check Achievements. Cross + Clover = Swords that act like the Cross does. Good damage, but fiddly to target. Knife + Gloves = Knife Spam. Good damage but cause its dependant of facing its not all reliable on Forest Map. Wand + Tome = Magic Missle Spam. Great damage as it will generally target the closest enemy first. Whip + Hollow Heart = Vampire Whip, good damage and will heal on hits. The above weapons will only upgrade when they are Maxed (Lv8), have their support item and you open a chest.
@@fancifulconcept @30 minutes death spawns and kills you... while it's "possible" to stunlock him via the watch, he will just spawn again. So yes, 30 minutes is the end of the run
This reminds me of a mobile game I played alot on down time. You were a wizard and had the same mechanics and killed these blob/creeps. I can't for the life of me remember the name of it. Edit: It is called Magic Survival.
I wanted to download the game you mentioned again, so I can play it at work. If you remember the title, please respond, I too have forgotten the title of the wizard game.
This game seems heavily inspired by the old Castlevania games. The first character is obviously a Belmont with the whip as his main weapon. The powerups like the daggers, axes, holy water, cross boomerang, and ect. are all directly out of the old Castlevania games. Several of the characters seem straight out of there too. I'm not upset by this... I think it's awesome, really. I'm just saying that I saw what they did there. Even the giant library is an entire map in several of those games. If this was a spinoff of Castlevania, it wouldn't surprise me whatsoever.
26:10 "And it's really a shame that it's sitting on steam right now with like three reviews" Me: goes to a steam link, game has about 380 reviews now, and a lot of them are referencing to Splatter video, that is really nice to see
IT JUST CAME TO MOBILE LAST MONTH! I just now found out, but I can now play the actual original Vampire Survivors on mobile, and it had full controller support! I don't think all the characters are available yet, but it's all FREE so far! It's freakin awesome! This game became huge, to where like everyone knows it, and there's a TON of knockoffs on mobile. So awesome that I can now play exactly what you are playing in this vid, and it's actually the official devs that released it on mobile!
I liked the detail that all the names are Italian...Simon Belmond's original name was Simone Belmondo, but due to mistranslations his name became French. So it's interesting that a vampire horde game has, I think, brought a small homage to that little lost detail from the Castlevania series. 04:20 "Peachone" is a funny way to spell the word "piccione" which means "pigeon" in Italian, and it's the closest to how we would write it for an Anglo-speaking audience to make them understand the phonetics/how to enunciate that word.
This video is believed to be the reason that Vampire Survivors exploded in popularity overnight. And now it won Best Game at the BAFTAs. Well done!
Yeah!
I just traveled back in time to witness the moment.
The developer Lucca did a interview and credited Splattercats video by name.
Having been stuck in a rut of playing the same stale games for the past five to ten years, in six months you've introduced me to literally dozens of amazingly fun and amazingly affordable games. You are the best thing to happen to my life in the last half of 2021.

sadly nowadays we have to many lazy crap games that use lazy crap graphics like this, that its harder to find those gems.
Yup, this is a love letter to Crimsonland, from 2003, almost 20 years old now.
Yeah I bought it yesterday and it's the best 2,5$ bugs I played for a game in a long time
I totally agree. And wow, you are so old. I'm only 44.

My mother tongue is not English, but I really enjoy how well articulated and funny you are in your videos. Keep up the good work!
You sold this game to me. Their video and screenshots didnt look like anything special but seeing it here looks like a fun callback to arcade games. Thanks for the game man.
For that price I also bought it. It's addictive, nice fun for in between and a quick session too. Great recommendation!
Just wanted to comment that I really like your videos. If there is some game I really like, I watch it through, otherwise I am sleeping to your voice (no offense, its really soothing). You are actually curing my insomnia at this point.
Also "They always run" and "Wanderlost" has great graphics, thank you for showing them :D
Have a nice day everyone!
"...let's go ahead and put a little bit more ***TREASURE CHEEEEEEESST***
How to upgrade/evolve the weapons.
Some of the Achievements are to upgrade some of the weapons.
In order to do that you have to get them to level 8, and have the corresponding nonweapon item then kill a boss to get a chest, after meeting the criteria you'll get the upgraded weapon
Axe + Candelabrador
Cross + Clover
Fire Wand + Spinach
King Bible + Spellbinder - This is the best weapon by far
Knife + Bracers
Magic Wand + Empty Tome
Whip + Hollow Heart
Is it possible to make it past 30:00 or is that the current end of each map?
@@fancifulconcept @30 minutes death spawns and kills you... while it's "possible" to stunlock him via the watch, he will just spawn again. So yes, 30 minutes is the end of the run
This reminds me of a mobile game I played alot on down time. You were a wizard and had the same mechanics and killed these blob/creeps. I can't for the life of me remember the name of it.
Edit: It is called Magic Survival.
I wanted to download the game you mentioned again, so I can play it at work. If you remember the title, please respond, I too have forgotten the title of the wizard game.
@@beefsuet7529 I just found it. The game is called Magic Survival. To the mechanics and name these titles are super close 😳.
another of those games that i passed on when I saw it on steam but seeing you play it man it looks like a good time.
Really, really dig the Castlevania vibes off of this one.
The sound of the gems being collected is so satisfying.
26:10 "And it's really a shame that it's sitting on steam right now with like three reviews"
Me: goes to a steam link, game has about 380 reviews now, and a lot of them are referencing to Splatter video, that is really nice to see
Curse you SplatterCat!!! I just sunk 4 hours in this game . Honestly, it's extremely addictive. Thank you for your daily dose of wonder
Wow. You weren’t kidding. This is so much like what Robotron was like. How cool.
Thank you for trying this game out, it's the exact kind of game I love! I cannot wait to buy and play it
Their playerbase jumped from like 60 players to over 1000 since this vid dropped. Good on ya splat with the coverage.
Getting some massive Crimsonland vibes and I'm sold! Excellent, my guy!
I was about to write tha same thing. Spent days pouring into it back in 2003-4 :D
App called Magic Survival on mobile is just like this game, its fantastic.... lots of time on the toilet playing it.... XD edit: Android only
I like the casino-level celebration effects when you find something or level up lol
starry eyes, this is the most metal game we've seen in years AND it makes me nostalgic for my childhood, im in love~!!
I picked it up as soon as you told us the price. Thanks man, your pile sifting has been extremely helpful.
Well, there goes any chance of me doing anything productive today. Thanks for the reccomend. This is a freaking gem.
