Jeff and Jacob were pillars of my early days in fly fishing as a young kid, letting me borrow their rods, spending time with me at Country Sport as an annoying little dork. Love these guys.
The difference between Summer Trout in Montana and Winter Steelhead in Washington is like the difference between playing slots and counting cards. You guys are skilled!
Left home at 2.30 in the morning to fly fish in the sea for sea run char here in Hokkaido, Japan. A round trip of seven hours driving and no fish. Going again tomorrow.....:)
Stephen Asbridge you must really love fly fishing and i didnt know there was char there....i do 2 hours of bike to go fly fishing everyday in summer and 2 hours back
That's pure Beauty, the fish, the cinematography the works outstanding. The sheer work and hours of effort you guys went to, to produce such a piece of work amazing.
Excellence. I look for professionalism and this is most certainly that. Wonderful! Great to see that the dog gets to go along too; that's nice to see. Beautiful fish also. Great job!
Epic and scenographic video, it is a piece of art, conveys in words and scenes, the passion that fly fishermen feel. Thank you very much for giving us those magic minutes. From Argentina, my warm congratulations
Daaaaamn Jakob!! What a chromer on the clack!! Beautiful fish bro! Wagner!! say hi to hickman for me. and todd, and the kid, and Danno, .....and all of yours, Nick...Angela...and lil Andreas(not so lil anymore)...i miss you manno! God Bless. Awesome video!
He says there's nothing better then hooking into a giant winter steelhead. I can't say he's wrong I love steelhead, but my local trophy musky might be hard to beat. Great video
Oh very nice video! I love fish steelhead they are few and in good condition at winter! My favourite colour of fly goes of basic 3 colour for me. White/pink purple/black black/silver all flys need to have some striking point that stands out of the colour. As same goes for early season Atlantic salmon in Norway its very similar few fish but as it happens they are big 25+lbs. What its about is fly must be in the water and cast long and cross over whit a good drift and the big difference between steelhead and salmon is. The salmon hangs higher up the water depth it's a master of the stream. Steelhead you find in different places and closer to the bottom. And the best way is get a early steelhead fly fish about 1 feet over the bottom that's hard as depth change all the time in the river. This goes for our sea trout as you in US says sea one browns! They stand behind a big stone or in the deep holes as water is cold! That means you have to fish them as close to bottom but not at the bottom that's the tricky part get it to present the fly deep enough and not hung up every cast. For early season here in Scandinavia we use mostly full sinking lines at sink 3-8 skagit are used here but way less then in US. For shallow water it's as good but on our deep pools we need full sinking lines ! I would love been whit you guys 👌 nice day and snow in the air is like get close to hook a fish that's my experience and I lived several years in US and I love the over cast days ! My first fly that day would be purple/black wing and silver body whit a fluorescent yellow but ! And large size 2-3" or more depending on the current! I did appreciate this video very much 🙏 And who knows I might meet you guys up there some year ! Best regards the swed 🇸🇪 Bjorn
Inspirational. I am new to the PACNW, new to steelhead fishing, and having caught one on the Klickitat this summer on spin gear made me want to do it on fly gear. Problem is I have never fly fished before, but seeing stuff like this makes me excited for the opportunity. Great production!
Incredible video, well done! I share the same passion/obsession/disease(?) as you guys.Although my targeted species may be different(wild Atlantic Salmon) we are all "cut from the same cloth". Some people dont get what we do,or how a fish basically rules our lives and haunts our dreams. To put in the time, effort, blood sweat and tears just for that split second when that perfectly placed fly stops and you realize....game on.For me that's what it is all about.THE TUG IS THE DRUG,all the rest is just a bonus.Tight Lines from East Coast Canada.
@@CoreyGolpheneeyes the bucket brigade put some Browns in a few Streams and Lake on Vancouver Island , one of the Rivers is called the Cowichan , and a Lake called Cameron lake , but the Cowichan also have all the native species of Salmon , Steelhead, And Trout cutthroat’s and Rainbow
Jakob Lund sorry if thats the case. The line appeared to be following the fly to the mid section of the fish. I always tell my clients the fish swiped at the fly and missed it when that happens. Jury is still out for me, because I'm sure you were hoping to get that drone footage, which was sweet. -driftboatdan
I've always had trouble getting the bigger steelhead to bite even when I can actually see them. The "half pounders" are a bit more cooperative and I just accept them as a nice sized trout rather than looking at it as a little steel. California has a lot of half pounders as well as big eel river strain steelhead that reach over 10lbs
as a 30 year member of the DGA the films is elegant and moving and so perfectly balanced - by the was I've been a spey fisherman for 40 years (Ireland taught) Live on the Jeff in MT - spend Sept and Oct on the Skeena. Well don guys.
Late to the convo...but I think it’s from “Dry Line Steelhead and Other Subjects.” Very enjoyable read...you can find it used still, but it’s going to be relatively pricey.
One of the better vids I have seen for a long time. I am immensely disappointed every time I see the photo on a salmon/steelhead mag cover with the fish lifted clear of the water. Obviously, the fish is not going to be released in that situation because it is illegal (in Washington State at least) to remove the fish from the water if it is to be released. So here are all these idiots killing these beautiful unclipped fish. But you guys do it right. Cradle the fish on the surface with an ungloved hand (trying not to wipe off the protective slime), not lifting it from the water, and getting excellent photos/vid. That rocks! Wish more people would learn to take photos the right way, without hurting the fish more than it has already been hurt. Good hunting, guys….
david beckenbaugh Thanks David for the nice comments. I try to show as much respect to these animals as possible and the anglers that I shoot all feel the same. I hear you with all the terrible things you see people do out there. They just don't get it... or just don't care. Very frsuterating. I think a lot of people have learned through these videos.
Hi and thanks for watching. Yes, I am trying to figure out the right location for Summer Run. It's coming, not sure exactly when yet. Thanks very much and please share this channel with your friends!
Great video! Gets me thinking ahead to the winter. Thinking my 12' - 7 wt. might be too light for those "sea lice covered bull dogs" though. What rods were you guys fishing?
In Ontario we use roe and beads for steelhead. Some guys fly fish but don't do half as good as the guys that use roe/beads. Its actually almost rare to see a guy with a fly rod. Are flies better to use out west rather than roe?
Yet another absolutely captivating video production, well done! As a salmon fly fisherman from Scotland and never (yet) fished for steelhead can you tell me the logic for the trailing single hook on your flies please? These fresh run chrome steelhead resemble Atlantic salmon in many ways. Thanks for production and sharing!
it’s basically what we came up with as an alternative to a scandi Tube Fly, it lets you fish a very large fly with a with a hook that’s gonna penetrate and hold better, also when fishing in the winter you want to be ticking bottom, so the flies get very beat up, and replaceable hooks can be nice too.

I never get tired of rewatching Winter Run. It is a classic!!!
Are you also watching it getting pumped for this year? lol
I still come back to this! It’s 2024 and still one of the best films ever made. 🤙
the falling snow, the raindrops splashing on the water surface ... those shots were amazing ....
mobstar1187 Thanks very much! I froze capturing those shots so thanks a million for appreciating them!
CatchMagazine these productions by Todd are amazing. I have watched them 100 times. We aspire to make great videos like this! Great job.
6 years later and you're doing it!
It's always nice to see people let nice fish go!
As always, another epic adventure documented by Todd Moen as only he can do it!!!! Can’t wait to get out on the river and start swinging
I could watch this video everyday that I'm not on the river. Great camera work, and excellent presentation.
I love this video..and nothing is better than catching steelhead..its my favorite type of fishing..and catching them on a fly you tied..its magic. :)
Very cool, nothing better then catching fish with a fly-rod.

Bad ass, love the over head shots and the boat dog.
just seeing someone play out and land a steelie had me hooked for life. My biggest one was last years 16 pound beast out of the Adam river.

Making me excited to come back home to Portland for xmas break! Going to college in Bozeman has its perks but I sure do miss steelheading

Daniel Cichowski All good! Easy Mends, Jakob.
You can clearly see it's a tube fly, which is why the fly position changes. The fly itself moves freely.

Jesse K. Wright Thanks Jesse. So much time and effort in these steelhead films. Glad you liked it.
Makes me wanna go to B.C. So badly. Witch is a struggle living in Massachusetts :( great video too!
You get striper fishing, and all that fun surf fishing.
A lot of bling and shine here, makes me wonder what your really trying to catch?

Nicely done ! Ive been swinging flys for couple years but yet to land a steely . Your video gave me insight .
Thank you

Gus H have you got one yet ? I fly fish on the Cowichan River a lot for steelhead and trout. I’m heading out in the morning.

were u running a tube fly on the last fish shown, looked as if it was caught it the side

No, flys are more challenging than roe fishing, which is why less people do it. Some people think that roe is too easy, so they do flys.
+john kennedy I usually see the fly guys catch more steelhead.
If winter steelheading was easier and more productive, the fair-chase challenge would be gone. I’ll never fish with a mop-fly either.
Absolutely not, but by god when you hook into a hot one, its unbelievable, especially on a Spey rod.
What river is this, and why is it not in the description?
Which 2 people disliked the video they should see its amazing
can i ask what rivers you have been on in the areas. I live in washington
If he is on peninsula its the dungeness bogachiel elwah hoh sol duc all amazing rivers
If the water is too high to fly fish I just pull out my 10 ft g loomis throw on a slip bobber and a pink worm, that usually works
