This one lady sat on a bench behind me for like an hour because her son really wanted to see me fish. so I caught a little bass and asked if she wanted to let her son release it. Biggest smile on that kids face. I'll never forget that. Makes fishing that much more worth it. He was like 4 and listened well when I showed him how to put it back softly and head first. Honestly i agree with you, that fishing is a lot of fun. But the problem i have with what you are doing is "Catch and Release".
Fish are vertebrates and it is aproved that they can feel pain similar to how we do. So from that perspective catching fish for your own satisfaction can be seen as animal cruelty.
Again i dont want to accuse you or put you in a bad light or something. I just think its important for people to be aware of what they are doing... how they will actually end up dealing with that Information is up to them.
Btw.: in this specific situation, catching and releasing a fish when the water is that cold may actually have an even higher impact on that fish, because since fish are cold-blooded (meaning they have the same temperature as the water sourounding them) they waste a lot of energie if they are stressed and forced to move quickly. And during winter its very difficult for them to gain that Energie back and they might actually end up dieing just because of that.

And they will most likely dont even get the point WHY you are insulting them. Just try convincing them... its way more effective and it wont lead to that many conflicts (and those dont make the person ur talking to chage their behaviour... on the contrary... they will just try to get away from you as soon as possible, not thinking about what you may want to tell them but simply be anoyed bythe fact that youre insulting them.

Hey, ice fisher from Sweden here. Releasing like this when ice fishing is frowned upon. The eyes of the fish freeze and they go blind. The fish is also already very low on energy and gets exhausted from the struggle of being caught. Additionally there is a rapid drop in temperature as the fish nears the surface. This is too much for a smaller fish to recover from. This individual looked poor towards the end and probably didn't make it =(

During Covid, I really got involved in my dock fishing, it was an easy way that I could seclude myself while also abiding by the rules that were in place. Long story short, I was at a private neighborhood dock of a very good friend of mine, and it was the neighborhood directly next to mine as well. I was fishing by myself, minding my business, and a group of 12 adults and eight kids came walking down the dock, all holding their shirts in front of their faces, screaming, “get out of here you’re gonna get us all sick” It was like a month into Covid but I wish I could have recorded the interaction. 😂 I left peacefully because I didn’t live in the neighborhood but it’s still comical. It’s always a stress when fishing and someone’s walking up. Stay blessed!

I found out recently that fishing is illegal in my city, $571 fine. There is some news story about it that explains that fishing damages the storm drain system somehow, and that fishing bothers pedestrians somehow. There are something like 57 stocked lakes, ponds, and waterways here. Checked after local security kicked me out of a park that didn’t have any no fishing signs.

I’ve always used ice fishing traps, which are spring loaded so when a fish bites a flag springs up. It’s a little hard to describe so just Google them, but they make it so you can have multiple holes in the ice with multiple traps while you sit back at your campsite or in your ice shed and stay a little warmer while you wait for a flag to go up

There fishing holes are actually huge help for fish. They allow for the water to be better oxygenated in winter time. Literally can suffocate fish with frozen water. Seen it happen as kid. Local authorities forbade to fish at our pond. Coming spring, the ice melted and the pond started to smell well.. like dead fish and lots of fish carcasses floating on the water.
