    Proof that a V8 doesn't need to be massive to sound fantastic! This could very well be the prettiest car in history... Alfas in general have always been fantastic but this is just a sensation

    I've had the honour to see (and hear!) one in real life, and it was darn amazing!

  • @forestghost7
    @forestghost7 9 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    I had one, a blue '73 smuggled into USA and registered as an Alfa sedan, from 1982 till '91. Sold it due to the parts supplies drying up and I wanted nothing more than to keep driving it. 25 yrs on , still sorely miss it :( Best Car I ever owned.

    • @DtRockstar1
      @DtRockstar1  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +forestghost7 It's such a shame when a car goes up in value and/or part supply dries up. You become so afraid to drive the car because if something happens to it, you're pretty much screwed.

    • @forestghost7
      @forestghost7 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +DtRockstar1 Yeah this is hitting home with me again ... I now own another classic that's rapidly appreciating and immense fun to drive, with amazing parts availability (1972 MGB GT, mint cond.) But I'm scared to use it lest I get rear-ended by some uninsured 3rd world creature, of which this city has millions, uggh. So it's restricted to road trips only (sigh)

    • @forestghost7
      @forestghost7 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +DtRockstar1 The other Montreal shame is that so many were lost to wrecks and neglect, thanks to typical exotic car owners (read IDIOTS). They were not super expensive, but super complex in the motor dept ... you had to have the mental means and resources to cope. Proud to say I did.

    • @forestghost7
      @forestghost7 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +doctor zaius Haven't seen another since mine went either. When I had mine there were 70 known in USA, 7 of em here in Fla. We got the 5 running ones together for a photoshoot in '89 (I think lol) ... priceless photos! I also made history as the youngest Mont owner ever - I was 20 when I got mine :-0 Well, they were affordable then, and I happened to be working at an Alfa shop so ... why not.

    • @doctorzaius4084
      @doctorzaius4084 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      forestghost7 You're a lucky man! I'd pay good money just to drive one around the block a few times. I'm surprised there were a whole SEVENTY of them in the U.S. at one point... seems like a lot, but then again there was still a booming grey market going in the U.S. in the '80s.
      And of course, naming only one car ever after a North American city and then NEVER selling that car here is sooooo Alfa.

I worked as a tester for classic car auction house and got to sample many unique classics like the Lancia Monte Carlo, the Ferrari Dino 246 and the Lanica Fulvia LHD - all were as good as their legends, particularly the Dino and the Fulvia.

    The car was delivered in Australia by Alfa Romeo - Australia who were located in Sydney. It was believed that only 70 went to Australia of which about 30 survived in 1985 when the car was purchased by the current owner. It was then shipped to Germany where it lived for about 7 years and then finally shipped to the USA. It just won a Ribbon at the prestigious St. John's Concours D'Elegance in Plymouth, Michigan, last week.

    The two prototypes didn't make their debut at an auto show in Montreal, they made their debut as part of an exhibit in the Man The Producer Pavilion at Expo '67 in Montreal.
    And it's not that they didn't pass North American emissions testing, it's that Alfa Romeo did not want to spend the money to bring them up to North American emissions standards - thus the decision not to even bother to try marketing them in North America.

  • @samagustini2744
    @samagustini2744 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Crazy how Alfa makes these little engines sound!!! I should know, I own a GTV with 2.5L V6 which is really a phenominal little motor! The 2.6 V8 in the Montreal was derived from the Typo 33 2 Liter racing V8 making 270 bhp @ 9600 rpm!! (imagine what THAT must sound like) The 2.6 in the Montreal got a cross-plane crankshaft and Spica mechanical fuel injection bringing 200 bhp at 6500 rpm.

    It is interesting that while it is a very rare car and the only V8 engine car made by Alfa Romeo until they did the 8C, no one knows it. Like any classic car it has it's shortcomings, but full credit must be given to Alfa Romeo for making it happen at a time when the company was quite small. Even more interesting is that the car is packed with pretty advanced componentry for when it was designed - the late 60's. Google it for a more in depth set of details: Dry Sump engine, Magnesium Valve Covers, Sump and Diff Oil Reservoir, Mechanical Fuel Injection, Close Ratio ZF 5 speed Gearbox, just to name a few...

    It did not premier at an auto show in Montreal. Here's how it got its name:
    World Fairs are usually elaborately staged commercial trade fairs (a lot of people trying to sell things to a lot of other people). Occasionally a “world-class” fair is staged. Montreal’s 1967 Man and his World was one such fair. The city worked for years to enlarge an island and build another one in the fast moving waters of the St. Lawrence River just to provide a site for the fair. When completed, those islands hosted spectacular pavilions from countries all over the world. Many were permanent structures and some remain today. The roads around the artificial island became the course for the annual Canadian Grand Prix F1 race.
    One of the “themed” pavilions was Man the Producer which featured achievements in industry and manufacturing. As a device to lead visitors through the exhibits, a fake automotive production line carried incomplete car bodies on a conveyor system throughout the exhibits. You guessed it: the car bodies were the raw shells of the Alfa Romeo Montreal. When the fair ended, many pavilions, including Man the Producer were taken down and disposed of. One can’t help wondering if the car bodies were shipped to Italy to be actually used to complete the limited number of Montreals.

    Never forget always add 1% good smokefree Api TC two stroke oil to the fuel when using modern ultra dry aggressive ethanolized pump fuels in old clasic cars, in Germany most Alfa and Ferrari drivers do so. This prevents corrosion in tank lines and carbs and lubricates the valves and top piston rings. You can minimize top piston ring wear around 40% when using a top lubricant, also two stroke oil contains anti vapor lock additives and sodium that lubricates the exhaust valves stems when using unleaded fuels on engines constructed for

    BertonE, not BertonI. Italian spelling is simple, an "E" sounds like an "E" every time you find it. Doesn't change in the middle of a word.
