A year ago I upgraded from 2013 Domane 4-series. It had given me many years and miles of pleasure. I believe it was the human engine and not the bike. My son started cycling and he got an Edmonda, I. was amazed how fast the bike rode. 2022, I upgraded to an Edmonda SL4 with etap. I’ve only changed the cassette to a 10-28. I’m grateful I found your page. I turned 61 this year and cycling has been a game changer for me.
I spent hours agonizing over the different models in the Emonda lineup before settling on the SL6 eTap. I seriously considered some of the lighter, more-expensive models, but I decided I needed to focus on the weight above the saddle before worrying about the weight below the saddle.
Great review! I currently own a Emonda SL6 Pro 2022 which I got on march this year. The bike is a beast, holds those high speed very well (I ride solo so no draft), climbs smooth and the responsiveness when I sprint on it is superb! Best purchase I have ever made. It's surprisingly comfortable than my old specialized sl4 tarmac. for reference: I'm 169cm, rides a 50cm frame with a 120mm -17 stem
I raced an SL6 in the 2019 seven-day Haute Route Pyrenees race. It was probably the best bike for the money for an event like that. And it descended like it was on rails - a very fun and intuitive ride.
Mine was 2018 and I had the same sort of experience. But I have been crippled from a collapsing carbon fork. I tried to believe that it was a manufacturer's error (which in my case it was) but then a close friend had his Colnago have the entire head tube fall off and he lost a finger. So I simply can't trust carbon fiber and I can't have fun riding while worrying all the time. Steel is real.
I have owned the sl5 with a 105 group for 8 or 9 months and I am about ready to upgrade the wheelset but in general it has been an awesome bike. as a beginner still working my up to doing 50+ mile rides it feels like the bike has a lot more performance than I can take advantage of at my current skill level. I can definitely see riding this bike for the next several years upgrading components as I go.
Yeah same as me, I just upgraded from the cheap standard wheels on my Domane SL5 after a year. I saved more then a kilo with the Shimano C36 Ultegra wheels so accelerating nad climbing is something else now. I'am really glad Trek makes these entry bikes in carbon fiber. I have 2 Domane SL and these frames are keepers. Rest of the component I like but yes. Of course a twice expensive bike is much better. But I rather anyday have a quality carbon frame then a pair of expensive wheels. It feels so solid on the road and in the first place I went with carbon cause of comfort.
First gen emonda AL owner here. I agree that trek did a fantastic job with the tube shape and invisible weld. I had it 8ish years just never got the motivation to upgrade it because it just works so well.
Nice review man. I’ve got a 2022 Emonda SL6 pro and I’ve recently bought a Domane AL5 with full bontrager mudguards as a winter/wet bike. Really enjoying both bikes after riding specialized for the past ten years.
I’m new to the cycling world but loving it. Currently riding a 2021 Domane AL4. For anyone new to cycling or just looking for a comfortable ride, I definitely recommend it. But it’s a tank lol I’ve had it about a year now. Debating between selling and changing to something lighter or start upgrading parts. Overall I really enjoy it.
If you can swing an SL go for it. I had a Trek AL before my Two SLs and the ride is so so much smoother with the carbon frames. If you don’t/can’t spend for carbon just keep What you have a upgrade components.
I just started riding road bikes (I'm 38 years old) I have a Fuji Saratoga from the 80's that I bought for $300 lol... I am for whatever reason REALLY drawn to cycling and hope to put a custom paint job and modern parts on my Saratoga, I have watched all your videos and they have fueled my new passion, taught me alot and guided me on what bike I should purchase when I am ready to upgrade 🙂
I have an Emonda SL6 AXS 2023. I ride with guys who all have Madones. It’s a fun conversation when we do hills. To cut weight use the SRAM Red. Cuts about 1.23 pounds off stock. Still heavy by standards mine stock was 19.68 pounds.
Very insightful review. I’m a little heavy at 217lbs and I’ve been eying the Emonda SL5 in a 60cm. It wasn’t the lightest carbon bike but it felt solid under my weight while sprinting and the handling was good IMO. Hope they’re still around when I’m ready to get one.
@Tom Kunich he ai t gonna break a carbon frame, real men of normal size can ride carbon bikes without fear of failure. I've seen alot bigger guys ride carbon just fine, not everyone that rides is the size of a 12 yr old girl....
I am 210lbs and 6'2", and I bought the same bize in the same size, about a year ago, and I love it... The only issue that I found was the tires that came with it... A few months after purchase I upgraded to carbon wheels and tubeless tires and it was so much lighter. You might want to try out the SL6 or another version, that comes standard with the carbon wheels vs. the cost of a later upgrade to the SL5.
I have the 2022 Emonda SL Ultegra Di2. I upgraded the wheels to Hunt 48 Limitless Aero. Very happy with this bike. Very easy to ride for hours on end. When the pace picks up, it responds without any problems. Enjoyed your comments.
Just getting to the party a couple months late but I’m gonna add my two cents. I am currently building a Trek Madone SL 5.2 from 2007 and they just don’t build them like they use to. With the cost of the bikes today I believe that you are not getting the bang for buck that we did in the old days. Don’t get me wrong that is a beautiful ride and and the components are great but old bikes just gave us so much more. Thanks for the review and have a blessed day.
You hit the nail on the head in what characteristics the rider should want in their bike. & this is real world riding for all. Unfortunately many people get submerged to thinking they must have all the latest gimmicks & trends that many new bikes have these days (& pay for it). Chasing a certain name brand, power meters, fully internal cockpit etc etc. They discount what the bike actually feels like to ride.
I've recently built a 2018 Trek Domane SLR direct rim brake, weighs 15 LBS... Absolutely love it, light weight, super comfy, responsive - stiff and looks great. What more should we desire, i was not a fan of Trek at first but I took a chance at the frame and built it up, happy I did.
I ride a 2021 Trek Domane AL3 and I absolutely love it. It's great for long rides. I haven't done any upgrades but did put on 28mm Continental Gatorskin tires.
Hello Mr. Scott I just purchased the 2024 Trek Edmonda Carbon Fiber. I love it, Its and amazing machine. its my first road bike and I'm just getting into the hobby. I pick up this bike for in between my 5K races and cycling.
My trek is the 2021 model FX2, I do a lot of city riding, sometimes the trails. This bike is solid I don't feel nervous when riding it on both street and trails it's fast coming off the red light easy to maneuver and the aluminum frame is light easy to maneuver I really enjoy it. And it is great and rain and snow.
Hi Luis. Great review. After a long wait I just got my 2023 Trek Emonda SLR 6 e-tap. Still getting used to electronic shifting and the way it handles compared to my Trek Madone. All in all a great bike and am enjoying it a lot. Just came across your channel and enjoyed the content and will check out your other videos..
Hi Dave! Thank you for watching and supporting the channel🙏🏾 Sounds like you have the hot set up. That is a great bike... hope you get joyful miles out of it👍🏾
I have a 2010 Trek 2.3 (alloy Madone!). Hydro-formed welds means you can't see 'em: beautiful. I put Mavic Ksyrium Elites on it and it was a blast. Collision in 2014, so I got a carbon Synapse and put C50s and Di2 on that (eventually!). The Trek is now my Zwift bike.
I did some upgrades to my Emonda sl6 I got a cane creek eewings crank, prestacycle uni block cassette, dura ace r9250 rear derailleur and winspace d45 hyper wheels my bike now weighs with power meter pedal and a Garmin mount 16.2 lbs
Nice review. I have the Domane SLR7 2020. Considering new Domane or Emonda, I like the simplicity of the Emonda, just concerned it is a bone cruncher or that the position is too slanted.
I also have the SLR6 - Project One - I upgraded from Rival to Force plus changed the wheels to Royal CLX Rapids (50 front 60 rear) - smoking speed and just feels lux😎
Funny enough, I’ve genuinely been trying to decide between the Emonda and Madone. I was dead set on the Emonda at first, but then came across a few cheaper priced Madones and that’s got me in a tailspin. Honestly, if money wasn’t an issue, I’d spring for an Emonda SLR 9. I’m an over thinker, so I already have a bling build in mind and a lightweight one. Bling Build: Sram red axs etap hydro shifters and front derailleur, force etap rear derailleur with ceramic speed OSPW, Hope calipers, Cannondale SiS2 cranks, CS BB, Princeton 5550 wheelset, Conti GP5000 tires, Bontrager XXX bars and stem. LW Build: Sram 11 speed etap groupset mechanical w/ TRP Spyre calipers, CS BB, Lightweight Meilenstein C wheelset. specialized Roval Alpinist cockpit bar/stem.
Emonda SLR w/Campy Record 12 Speed Mechanical Group. Compact Crank and 11/32. Bora WTO33. 16.1 lbs. Love the bike. Your review matches my sentiments so far. The SLR brought the built weight down to my Tarmac SL2 weight so very happy.
I have 2 Trek's a crossrip and a remedy. Both of these are alloy bikes. The crossrip has 40mm tyres, hydraulic brakes and I recently put clip on aero bars for triathlon. This Bike was bought as a commuter, day tourer. It goes well on dirt, gravel and green mtb trails, easy singletrack. They don't make these anymore. The remedy is a 27.5 duel sus beast with a dropper post. Goes well on jump lines and does all single track. Its old was bought in 2014 and since then geometry for MTB's has improved a lot. I love both of these bikes. I am looking forward to getting a Emonda SL5 I've put the deposit down its going to be used for triathlon with clip on aero bars. I can only imagine how much faster I will be on this. I used to do a heap of road riding on a Fondriest TR3, where I would often be at the front of a pace line. My riding is well suited to time trial. I have a firm belief that the best way to reduce the weight is to be at a good weight yourself. If you weight 5kg less then thats less weight you have to push up hill rather than losing say 1kg off your bike.
Hello Luis, I see you have videos of City Bikes Pines, that's the Local Shop I buy all my bikes / parts from. I have a 2022 Top Fuel and the Store ordered me a 2023 EMONDA SL6 soon to arrive. I live in Miramar and I am looking for groups to ride as soon as my bike arrives. Thanks for the videos.
Hi Romani! Yes, that is Citybike. There is a shop ride on Saturday morning at 7am. But I also ride Markham Park paceline Tues and Thurs at 8am. There are lots of rides on this area. Look forward to seeing you out there.👍🏾
2021 Emonda sl7 here. Got just over 3k miles spent on it. SW Florida so not much climbing. I would agree with this review. Very happy with this bike 👍🏼 (Ultegra di2 group)
Interesting review Luis. I have an Emonda SL6 from early 2020 and have put almost 9,000 miles on it. Back then, it was their lightweight climbing bike - I was surprised to hear that it felt heavy in this review but maybe there have been changes that have added weight to the Emonda since I got mine. Mine does not have the ISO Speed stuff on it. The Domaine of the same year did and I was glad the Emonda didn't because I'd expect those replacement custom elastomers to be hard to come by in a few years when they starts hardening with age. I see that Trek has removed the handlebar elastomer on one the Domane in 2023 in a bid to reduce weight. Purchase decision: I had a Lynskey GR260 fitted with 28mm road slicks and felt it handled very close to the Domaine. I didn't need two bikes that were that similar. I was surprised at how differently the Emonda handled and went with it. The Emonda was noticeably lighter and more responsive than the Domaine. The frame was stiff and I would have to work very hard to get brake rub when climbing out of the saddle. The Emonda feels "twitchy" and I'm not comfortable on it above 45 mph or in cross winds. The Lynskey I've had up near 55mph on a few occasions and it just felt fun. I'm sure the Domaine would be fun at high speed too. But not the Emonda. The geometry of the Emonda brings the front wheel in and you most likely will be dealing with toe strike. I didn't recall the Domane having that issue. Don't get me wrong, I really like my Emonda and I ride it all the time. I live in the SF Bay area and we have hills everywhere and this bike is a joy to ride on the flats and the climbs. I just need to reign it back in on the big descents. I've done four century rides on it and a decent number of 90, 80, and 70 mile rides as well. I was upgraded to Aerolus (sp?) wheels by the shop I bought it at because the Paradigm aluminum wheels it originally came with cracked on me (the rims on the drive side where the spoke nipples attached) twice. The Aerolus carbon wheels were not game changers but they did dampen the road feel a bit and they were quieter when it came to wind noise. It's good to hear that the Aerolus wheels are standard. My bike also came with the manual Ultregra group set. I had the derailuer cage swapped out so I could run a 11-32 tooth cassette. Oh, a recent discovery, I went with Continental Gran Prix 5000 and TPE plastic tubes recently (stepping away from the Bontrager R tires and butyl tubes) and what an amazing difference that combo makes!
Hi John! Thanks for sharing your experiences with your bikes. On this second gen Emonda they definitely changed the formula a bit. The SL is still a great bike though. Wheels can definitely be a big game changer👍🏾
I am considering the ALR 5 as it's weight is close to the SL and costs less. I believe the 105 groupset will be more than adequate. Thanks for the review.
Just purchased this 2023 Emonda SL6 today in the same color for a great price. I may want to change out the handlebar down the road for a better look and weight savings. Do you have any suggestion on the cheapest route to shave off some weight? I also have the Madone SLR7 (love it!) and 2021 Domane SL5. I will likely sell my Domane because it’s just to heavy. Thanks for your review.
I own a 2018 domane sl frame rim brake I built up with ultegra mechanical. I love it. I have a 2019 checkpoint sl I built up with ultegra and grx mix. Love it too. Treks sizing fits me well.
I bought a trick composite. It was great at the time. I'm writing specialized now. Still looking for. Dream fit dream ride. You have to pay for quality it's what i'm seeking
I have both the 2015 Emonda SL and 2016 ALR frames, which I have built up with Dura Ace/Ultegra components, XXX stem and bars, and Fulcrum Racing Zero wheels. Both weigh about 16lbs, and ride great. I prefer both to the current Trek Emonda SL because of weight. I could get the current SLR with about the same weight, but cannot justify the cost when my current Emondas ride just as well.
I live in Maryland. I have a 2018 SL6 pro you take that bike into the hills...that weight you speak of is nonexistent. On the flat is great but keep in mind the Emonda was created to be a climbing bike and it does that well.
Thank you for your video. I am looking at the more inexpensive aluminum Trek models, trying to go between the Emonda and the Domane. I LOVE the Emonda, but the roads around here can be pretty damn beat up (with lots of debris in the bike lanes as well), and some light gravel in between spots, which makes me want the Domane but the Emonda just seems so nice.
If you’re interested in speed, I’d go for the Emonda, hands down. The aluminum Emonda, especially the ALR5 is an awesome bike. If you’re interested in comfort however, go for the Domane. It’s like the lazy boy of road bikes, it’s so comfortable.
Although not cheap the Emonda SLR version with Shimano Dura Ace components! Can't get much better. As a Trek and Emonda fan, I completely agree with your review! Good job!
Hey man, I'm looking to buy a new bike next year so looking at this year's model of the Emonda and I just love the look, but what changes did Trek implemented to model 2023 comparing it to the model you reviewed?. With much love I own a Giant TCR Advanced II.. model year 2012. Great video and very nice Chanel maté. Greetings from the Netherlands
Hi Chris! Thank you and greetings to you. I am not aware of any changes to the frame. Some trim and spec items may have changed but not the frame of that Emonda. Domane and Madone did have changes.
@@thegoodwheel hi there, Thanks for responding, I will take a look at those models at well and also at some other brands in this category. If I will go for the Emonda it's going to be the slr 7
@@thegoodwheel at work and I'm thinking..are your able to test the slr 7 Emonda 2023..?.or maybe compare it to other possible contenders in the same prijs cartography..that would be awesome 💖
at the moment i have a specialized tarmac expert frame from 2019,cahnge frames as the first from 2013 was replaced through warranty , having the money i would possibly try the slr emonda in light weight components as i am a climber by nature ( specialized are over priced ) at the moment i run bontrager Aeolus 5 carbon wheel set , having said that ths summer i tryed a pair of winspace 45mm carbon with carbon spokes 28mm continental 5000 tires ,the difference in the wheel sets do not compare , the response and feel getting up to speed and holding that speed as well as the cornering with the windspace set was way better than the Aeolus , however the one drawback would be the harsh ride especially over the different road surfaces , on a crit good pavement would ignore the road buzz from the wheels , the one thing that would make a difference would be to run tubeless , would be faster and less harsh , climbing with them i did not have enough time to really get to feel them out , as the weather did not co-operate and i had them for just a couple of days as a tryout, on my return ride from the bike shop of 66km on a 26.1km segment had a average of 39.6 km/hr and set time of 39.45 on a 128km ride that day. my previous fastest was 42min in 2015, at 64 years young still like to compete with the youngsters , soory for the long answer .
I once got SL5 with 105 but I just sold that with a very low price😢 Anyway, Émonda is absolutely a nice road bike series and I enjoyed riding that a lot.Recently, I got my new friend - an Aethos Expert. I made this hard choice between that and an émonda SL6 eTap, happy to enjoy it remotely by your sharing!
I've had the luxury of owning a 2017 Emonda SLR6 full Dura Ace 11sp mechanical and at a size 56, it weighed just under 16lbs. The acceleration to top end and overall comfort is top notch. But now I've upgraded to a 2021 Madone SLR9 and I don't think a road bike could get much better. It's just over 17lbs but it feels much faster than the Emonda, and it actually more comfortable as well. And the Madone holds speed like it has electric assist
Hi Jerrell. I think I remember your Emonda, but don't think I have seen you on the Madone... sound like a great bike👍🏾 I appreciate you sharing your insights Brother!
2020 ALR5. Size 60CM. Trek does a great job with this bike as you say with respect to paint and welds also it comes with a full 105 groupset, the same comparable competitor bikes give you a non-105 crank which is much heavier than the 105 crankset. At time of purchase with stock severely limited across all brands and models I wanted a bike that I didn’t need to upgrade from the start. Other option available to be was a Giant Contend AR1 from same dealer. Lower end carbon Trek Emonda models didn’t justify the extra cost as an Emonda SL5 was available to me before I found the ALR5. So far the only upgrades I have made are better tires replacing the Bontrager R1 tires to Continental GP5000 & recently switching to RideNow TPU inner tubes which are a game changer in terms of ride and weight savings for the cost over butyl inner tubes. In early spring 2023 the serious upgrades planned are carbon lightweight wheels, integrated one piece carbon handlebar & a new saddle. After that possibly if I can justify the cost I would like Absolute Black chainrings paired with Ultegra Di2, but that’s something I’m still unsure about as BB compatibility may be an issue and alternate options aren’t much better than current stock BB. The one piece carbon handlebars aren’t to fully integrate the cables which isn’t possible but more to clean up the cockpit and for aesthetics of the front end of the bike with minimal weight savings. Only regret was getting the bike in a 60CM size, I think 58CM would’ve been more a dialed in for for myself and body. I’m 193cm tall or 6’3.5” in height.
Thank you for sharing that M. A. Sounds like you have a good hit list of upgrades and a well thought out plan. The wheelset upgrade should change the way the bike feels alot... as well as the other carbon bits and gping to Ultegra.👍🏾
@@thegoodwheel Thank you sir. What wheelsets do you recommend? My leaning is towards some of the Chinese brands which have been well reviewed by several TH-camr’s, those being Winspace, Elite & Magene. I think though based on the reviews I have seen combined with cost factor most likely I will go with Elite SLT 50mm carbon wheels.
@@m.a.2282 I have a 2021 SL5 and upgraded the wheels to Winspace Hyper 50 MM. I love this wheelset. it changed the dynamic of the bike. It literally jumps off the line when I apply a little torque. They are so quick to get up to speed. The stock wheels and tires this bike came with was such a disservice to this bike. I watched quite a few YT videos about the Winspace wheels. Pulled the trigger when they came out the Black Edition. I receive compliments on a regular basis. A mechanic buddy of mine was highly impressed with them. I've had them since March 2022 and can't think of a negative of owning these wheels. Using an influencers code I got 10% off. My previous bike was a 2016 ALR5. i loved that bike, rode the freakin hell out of it. Lady in a Mercedes hit me which led to the SL 5. Good luck on what ever you choose.
I ride a 2009 Trek Madone 4.7, which was not one of the higher-end Madones of the time. It weighs around 20 lbs. with its pedals, which for me is pretty lightweight, considering that my previous road and hybrid bikes both weighed 28 lbs. I have to say I'm not terribly impressed with any of the current Trek road bikes, and if I ever have to replace my Madone, I'm thinking of a custom steel bike. As far as the Emonda/Madone/Domane issue goes, I think Trek can still come up with a few more ways to arrange the same letters -- in fact, I'm hoping that someday they'll introduce the Daemon!
@@thegoodwheel I really like your videos and I have subscribed to your channel -- beautifully photographed and organized, and you speak naturally without sounding scripted or hesitant. Really well done!
Rode a Trek Emonda SL6 from 2016 some years ago, I didn't like its geometry nor its wheelset but otherwise it was a very good cIimber and fast crit race bike.On the other hand I have a 1999 Trek 2300 made of custom Alpha aluminium SLR frame which was made in the USA which will be equipped with Dura Ace and Zipp 404 wheels.
I worked at a Trek shop for a spell, I had my heart set on a Doman SLR, the in-store bike fitter turned me on to the Emonda, but due to color and sizing constraints, I ended up with Madone SLR. What a turn of events, lol
@@thegoodwheel Thank you man. By the way, I love your cycling videos and have learned a lot watching. My wife and I just started cycling last year and are loving every minute of it. We are trying to learn as much as we can to help support our new found passion for cycling!
I am coming from CAAD 10 and think about an upgrade. As you know both bikes, can you say if its worth it and what is different in riding…more comfortable? Thanks for review and cheers from an oldschool biker from germany
Hi Sven. The CAAD 10 is a better performance bike when you push it hard. Responsiveness in acceleration and turning in. The Emonda SL is what I tested, and it does everything well and feels more plush. It is a good performer. I have not ridden the Emonda SLR, but I hear it feels different in a more responsive way... racier way. I love CAAD10s but I would at least ride the SLR to see how it feels.
What would you reccomend to upgrade for the Emonda? You show a different seat post and saddle at the end of the video, but i'm new to cycling and am not sure what they are. Any tips would be appreciated :) I recentally got an Emonda, but would love to upgrade it for slightly more comfort.
I have a ‘22 version of this but w/ Ultegra groupset. Upgraded wheels to Enve 45carbon wheels and Enve 29mm tires. Seat to Aeolus pro carbon saddle, bontrager RSL carbon stem and Bontrager XXX carbon bars, along w/ composite Ultegra pedals. My setup w/o my accessories like tail light, headlight, go pro and phone holder is a hair under 17lbs. The bike is much quicker than my near stock ‘20 Emonda SL5.
I have a 18 emonda alr 4 rim brake. Great bike, simple, adjustable , affordable. Was a great modern take on time tested ways. Unfortunately it's no longer offered . I put ultegra cranks ,cassette, and a xxx bontrager seatpost on it and it's a lbs lighter than the carbon 105 disc. Bought it on sale and have $1400 into it. I wouldn't recommend buy a road bike with the current industry
Have 10 road,3 mtn. last 1 I bought is the Trek Sl6 pro,I changed the wheels to lighter carbon, tires, carbon bar & alum. stem,Fizik seatdoes everything really good,a lil over 17lbs., I dont think being any lighter does anything, too many people get hung up on weight,my other bikes weigh 16.5 & up & this does what they do even if they are a lil lighter, this is a great bike.
Hi Joe, thanks for sharing your experience. This bike as tested weight over 19 pounds... which is heavy for modern performance bikes. It will still perform, but would do so better if lighter👍🏾
Great review, I have the same bike now for nearly 2 years, I feel like it’s a little slower or maybe I haven’t figured out how to get the right seating or tires, still has original tires with carbon wheels. But I love the bike It holds speed well and once I’m up to speed I don’t loose it quickly, love that but I feel like it gets outperformed by Pinarello in terms of speed, idk!
Thank you for sharing that Clif! I appreciate your comment. I found the wheelset a bit on the heavy side even though they were carbon and that does affect initial acceleration 👍🏾
Good review - It definitely feels solid - Which gives the feeling of 'slowness' (which is certainly not the case). I have a 2021 SL6 with Mechanical Ultegra and Pro 37 wheels. Very happy with it; though I will eventually upgrade the handlebars and seat to shave some weight.
Swoon. I love this bike - Climbing and bombing the Blue Ridge Mountains on an SL6 disc pro. So stable on fast descents, hardly notice crosswinds. 🤩 I’m considering going with wider tires - my cycle friend cruises on a Domane w 32s, while I do feel every bump in the road on 25s. Probably try 28s - but some locals here are riding 30s on Emonda.
Hi Daryl, my fat fingers accidentally hit dislike on your comment and I just saw that. So I apologize. Thank you for sharing your build with us and supporting the channel👍🏾
I have made past mistakes buying bikes based on reviews then manufacturers sizing. I just had a pro bike fit then based on my physiology and geometry, selected a range of bikes that would fit me. I ended up buying a Trek Domane SL6 Di2. It is super smooth. It is a bit on the heavy side but to be honest I will sacrifice comfort over a few hours on a long ride over a kilo or so up a hill.
I think most masters cyclist should really be on endurance bikes and not on race bikes due to limited mobility. How many middle age has the flexibility, mobility, strength, endurance of a pro? None right?
I have the Trek Domane SL6 with SRAM Rival eTap AXS wireless drivetrain. I love the bike and it is comfortable and attractive. I am looking at the emonda SL6, but for now I am enjoying the Domane. I do want to get something that allows me to go faster when needed. I recently rented this bike in carbon, but the wheels were not carbon. Just the difference in frame geometry, I could climb better. I am thinking of adding a new set of carbon wheels to the Domane, which is more economical than a completely new bike.
Trek Émonda SLR RSL, Sram Red Etap 11s, Cane Creek DM G4's, HED Jet RC4/6, Conti GP5k tubeless, with the remaining budget I would get the lightest fitting kit available.
Thank you! Yeah, I didn't want to mess around too much with her front end. I did swap out her bars from the stock Bontrager 42s to alloy FSA Omega 40s and that made a huge improvement in feel.
I have the trek fx 4 carbon 2021 is there something to be gained by switching to carbon wheels the ones you have on your emonda, it's not so much the weight I'm thinking about but more how the bike feels to ride.
Hi Johnny. I am not sure how much better these are than what you currently use. Biggest benefit in wheel upgrades is the bearings... carbon can save weight for climbing.
I have an Emonda SL6 pro. It is a very comfortable bike. It is not the fastest, nor is it the lightest. I tried a Cannondale super six a couple of weeks ago. Much better in all aspects. Fast, comfortable and a bit lighter than my 2021 Emonda. Definitely I will change the handlebar and stem for integrated carbon bar/stem. The one that comes with the bike looks horrendous. Thank you for your informatives videos. Take care yourself.
If the Emonda can comfortably be ridden for 100-150 miles then I’ll go for it. Everything I research points toward the Domane but I fear the extra pounds will kill the climb and speed; and I log 1,000 ft of elevation where I live for every 10 miles I ride.
The Emonda is not Trek's "downmarket" bike. It's their climbing bike. The Domane is their endurance bike and the Madone is the aero bike. Each of these models has an SL and an SLR variant. The SL variant is the downmarket option.
I have been EXTREMELY dissatisfied with my brand new Moots Vamoots RSL. It is NOT what I thought it was going to be. To the point that just minutes ago I was looking at the Emonda SLR9 Dura Ace and honestly I think I will buy it and then sell the moots.
Given the weight of Chinese OEM frames, and the weight of the SLR version, it's an absolute disgrace how heavy the cheaper versions are. If they made all frames lighter and able to clear 32 or 34C, they would have a category killer, and I'd buy one.
After owning a used Emonda SLR from 2016 and an Emonda sl6 from 2019 - both of which were very good light weight rim-brake climbing bikes - I was very disappointed by the 22 sl6 Emonda, which I bought new thinking it will be just as good of a climber as the previous 2, but with disc brakes and an aero design. However, it turned out to be heavy (especially the wheels), beefy and - while prfeclty fine on the flats - not really a natural climber in my opinion - more like an entry level all-rounder... Switched to a Giant tcr pro and now I'm happy
Now I’m really not sure hahaha I want the Madone but I’m afraid it will not be comfortable enough to me … or a good fit for me I should say weight speed and looks matter to me comfort matter too but it comes 4th lol
Thanks for watching... I hope you continue to ride on good health👍🏾
I spent hours agonizing over the different models in the Emonda lineup before settling on the SL6 eTap. I seriously considered some of the lighter, more-expensive models, but I decided I needed to focus on the weight above the saddle before worrying about the weight below the saddle.
👍🏾very good point there Greg. Thank you for sharing your experience
@@Jacob99174 The weight of the rider counts as part of the weight of the total system.
Amen. it's a lot cheaper to lose 2lbs off my stomach than it is off my bike
Thank you! Sounds like a sweet set up the way you have it. 👍🏾
Hey Dil, I’m 172 looking to get a 52, what was the weight of your bike?
I raced an SL6 in the 2019 seven-day Haute Route Pyrenees race. It was probably the best bike for the money for an event like that. And it descended like it was on rails - a very fun and intuitive ride.
Sounds like an amazing experience👍🏾
Hi there and thanks for watching! The bike definitely has a lot of potential👍🏾
👍🏾
Nice review man. I’ve got a 2022 Emonda SL6 pro and I’ve recently bought a Domane AL5 with full bontrager mudguards as a winter/wet bike. Really enjoying both bikes after riding specialized for the past ten years.
Thank you Simon! Thanks for sharing👍🏾
Thanks for sharing that Ryan👍🏾
If you can swing an SL go for it. I had a Trek AL before my
Two SLs and the ride is so so much smoother with the carbon frames. If you don’t/can’t spend for carbon just keep
What you have a upgrade components.
Thank you Sergio! I appreciate hearing the channel is helpful. Keep riding... and update us on that build👍🏾
I am glad you found the right bike for you!
I would suggest the Trek ALR Emonda or one of the Alpha series. Loads cheaper and you don't have to worry about a carbon fiber failure.
Hi Mohawkin! Thank you for sharing that. I rode an Emonda with that Ultegra set up and found it a really good spec for the bike. Such a good bike!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and watching the video👍🏾
You hit the nail on the head in what characteristics the rider should want in their bike. & this is real world riding for all.
Unfortunately many people get submerged to thinking they must have all the latest gimmicks & trends that many new bikes have these days (& pay for it).
Chasing a certain name brand, power meters, fully internal cockpit etc etc.
They discount what the bike actually feels like to ride.
Thank you for sharing that T Man! I try to tell it like I use it. 👍🏾
Nice! Thanks for sharing👍🏾
I ride a 2021 Trek Domane AL3 and I absolutely love it. It's great for long rides. I haven't done any upgrades but did put on 28mm Continental Gatorskin tires.
Hi Aaron, thank you for sharing that. You are correct, that is a great bike for long rides. Are you planning any upgraded for it?
I'm on my 3rd Emonda and I'm a big fan. It's not a pure race machine like the Madone but it's a great combo of comfort and light(er) weight.
Hi Ed, thanks for sharing that!
Just picked this bike up, SL6 Pro. Great review!
Thank you... and Congratulations 👍🏾
Hello Mr. Scott I just purchased the 2024 Trek Edmonda Carbon Fiber. I love it, Its and amazing machine. its my first road bike and I'm just getting into the hobby. I pick up this bike for in between my 5K races and cycling.

I am glad to hear the video was helpful Paul👍🏾
My trek is the 2021 model FX2, I do a lot of city riding, sometimes the trails. This bike is solid I don't feel nervous when riding it on both street and trails it's fast coming off the red light easy to maneuver and the aluminum frame is light easy to maneuver I really enjoy it. And it is great and rain and snow.
Thank you for sharing that James! Hybrid bikes can offer some really fun experiences 👍🏾
Hi Luis. I just got the Madone SLR6 Gen 7. I’m too new to cycling to give an educated review but it rides great to me. Speedy and corners well.
Great bike! Enjoy 👍🏾
Hi Dave! Thank you for watching and supporting the channel🙏🏾
Sounds like you have the hot set up. That is a great bike... hope you get joyful miles out of it👍🏾
I just got a 2023 emonda sl6 pro with 105 di2 which will be my first electronic group set definitely looking foreward to ride . Good review
Thank you Andrew!
Thanks for sharing👍🏾
I did some upgrades to my Emonda sl6 I got a cane creek eewings crank, prestacycle uni block cassette, dura ace r9250 rear derailleur and winspace d45 hyper wheels my bike now weighs with power meter pedal and a Garmin mount 16.2 lbs
I have the SL5, and saved $ to customize the carbon wheels, tires, bar/stem, and saddle I wanted. Worth upgrading and having spares
💪🏽👍
Good choice!
Very informative video, I didn't know of so many details going into this type of road bike & performance, great knowledge to have 😀
Hello Lillian! Yes, for such a simple device a lot goes into making it feel the way it does. Thank you 👍🏾
Nice review. I have the Domane SLR7 2020. Considering new Domane or Emonda, I like the simplicity of the Emonda, just concerned it is a bone cruncher or that the position is too slanted.
Thank you Pierre! I found the ride quality very compliant. It is a robust build though. Good luck with your selection👍🏾
I also have the SLR6 - Project One - I upgraded from Rival to Force plus changed the wheels to Royal CLX Rapids (50 front 60 rear) - smoking speed and just feels lux😎
Ha ha sounds like a rocket for sure!
Hi Gene! I am liking the way you are making that SLR9 sound. Sounds like you've decided😂😂
Sounds like a fantastic build 👍🏾
Trina is an awesome bike friend! Bike is crazy looking and has landed square in the middle of my radar.
Hey Michael, thanks for sharing! That Emonda will definitely yeild an aero benefit👍🏾
I am so glad I found this site.
Hi Tom, so am I 👍🏾
Hello Luis,
I see you have videos of City Bikes Pines, that's the Local Shop I buy all my bikes / parts from.
Thanks for watching Craig! Enjoy and ride it in good health?
Thanks for the video! I would spec out the bike with a lighter groupset to lighten the load.
Great point👍🏾
2021 TREK DOMANESL6 the color MATT BLACK and it's very comfortable to ride but looking to get an EMANDA
I am considering the ALR 5 as it's weight is close to the SL and costs less. I believe the 105 groupset will be more than adequate. Thanks for the review.
The ALR is a great bike!
I have 2 trek bikes I have a domane al2 and a Emonda sl6 pro di2 I love them both
Nice stable 👍🏾
Just purchased this 2023 Emonda SL6 today in the same color for a great price. I may want to change out the handlebar down the road for a better look and weight savings. Do you have any suggestion on the cheapest route to shave off some weight? I also have the Madone SLR7 (love it!) and 2021 Domane SL5. I will likely sell my Domane because it’s just to heavy. Thanks for your review.
I put a set of zipp 720SL’s on my Emonda. Great bars.
I own a 2018 domane sl frame rim brake I built up with ultegra mechanical. I love it. I have a 2019 checkpoint sl I built up with ultegra and grx mix. Love it too. Treks sizing fits me well.

Hi Steven! Thank you for sharing that. I am seeing a lot of love for previous generation Emonda. You have some great builds👍🏾
Trina has damn good taste.
Hi Chinaski! Yes she does, Her bike stable is quiet nice👊🏾
I live in Maryland. I have a 2018 SL6 pro you take that bike into the hills...that weight you speak of is nonexistent. On the flat is great but keep in mind the Emonda was created to be a climbing bike and it does that well.
Hi pricekidd77! Thanks for sharing👍🏾
Thank you Jimmy, both great choices👍🏾
The frame adds only about 1% of the damping. The rest is the tires. Mount 28 mm tires and you can't believe how smoothly the bike will ride.
Good job!
Yes Mark! That combination is tough to beat as an overall bike👍🏾
@@thegoodwheel hi there,
Thanks for responding, I will take a look at those models at well and also at some other brands in this category.
No worries of the length Eric, I enjoyed reading it👍🏾
I've got a 2018 Emonda rim break. I love it.
Hi Scott, thank you for watching. Many people prefer the 1st gen Emonda... it's a great bike👍🏾
@@thegoodwheel yeah. It's a lighter more simple bike and essentially the same thing as the old madone.
@@scottf3456 Agreed! I rode one on a hilly course a few years back and really enjoyed it.
Thank you Chris! That Aethos should weight a lot less than the SL6. I hope you enjoy it fully! 👍🏾
Hi Jerrell. I think I remember your Emonda, but don't think I have seen you on the Madone... sound like a great bike👍🏾
I appreciate you sharing your insights Brother!
I'm trying to decide between Emonda and Madone both SL 6 Di2 2023. leaning toward Emonda - coz of the price difference.
Both great options👍🏾
Emonda SL6 Pro. The combination of aero and climbing ability makes it a good all rounder for me.
2020 ALR5.
Ah... the endless Trek alphabet soup😂
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts Tenrec👍🏾
👍🏾
Love your shoes. The yellow ones. What brand and model are they.
Thank you Barry. Thise are old Mavic... I can't recall the model name but they were carbon soled.
Usually the first recommended upgrade is wheelset. For comfort; higher volume tires at lower psi and a saddle with carbon rails will also help.👍🏾
I have a Madone and Domane. I am value-oriented so I settled for SLs. Now, I am thinking of Emonda SLR
Really good bike👍🏾
I have a ‘22 version of this but w/ Ultegra groupset. Upgraded wheels to Enve 45carbon wheels and Enve 29mm tires. Seat to Aeolus pro carbon saddle, bontrager RSL carbon stem and Bontrager XXX carbon bars, along w/ composite Ultegra pedals. My setup w/o my accessories like tail light, headlight, go pro and phone holder is a hair under 17lbs. The bike is much quicker than my near stock ‘20 Emonda SL5.
Nice👍🏾
I have the slr 9 12sp dura ace. Comes in at 15.1lbs with pedals and bottle cage. Super light and fast bike
Definitely great in that configuration 👍🏾
I have a 18 emonda alr 4 rim brake. Great bike, simple, adjustable , affordable. Was a great modern take on time tested ways. Unfortunately it's no longer offered . I put ultegra cranks ,cassette, and a xxx bontrager seatpost on it and it's a lbs lighter than the carbon 105 disc. Bought it on sale and have $1400 into it. I wouldn't recommend buy a road bike with the current industry
Thank you for sharing that. Agreed, the ALR is a great bike👍🏾
you should try get your hands on an allez sprint and/or a pre 2015 allez with nice components and see how you like it
Hi Loc! Noted, that is certainly doable and would be a good used bike alternative for a review.👍🏾
I have an Emonda SLR 9. It is an amazing bike and the weight is 15.7lbs. I am running sram red axs.
Sounds sweet!
I have an Emonda SL7, cause I love climbing! 😊
Very nice!
I'm looking at buying a Madone SL 6, don't know to much about the emonda , I ride with Metro Atlanta cycling be safe James
Hi Jim! Thanks for watching. MACC is an awesome group... love riding at your events. I hope the video helped a bit to introduce you to the Emonda 👍🏾
Thank you Deanos! I appreciate hearing your experience. The cockpit and saddle are certainly two areas to improve👍🏾
Thanks for watching. No doubt, larger volume will give a different ride👍🏾
Domane owner 2019 SL6 with Ultegra Aeolus carbon wheels, comfortable bike altogether.
Well said Petyr!
I think most masters cyclist should really be on endurance bikes and not on race bikes due to limited mobility. How many middle age has the flexibility, mobility, strength, endurance of a pro? None right?
I am thinking about this bike.
It's a good bike!
@@thegoodwheel deposit on the Emonda SL6 axe
I have the Trek Domane SL6 with SRAM Rival eTap AXS wireless drivetrain. I love the bike and it is comfortable and attractive. I am looking at the emonda SL6, but for now I am enjoying the Domane. I do want to get something that allows me to go faster when needed. I recently rented this bike in carbon, but the wheels were not carbon. Just the difference in frame geometry, I could climb better. I am thinking of adding a new set of carbon wheels to the Domane, which is more economical than a completely new bike.
Both great bikes. They just do it differently 👍🏾
Trek Émonda SLR RSL, Sram Red Etap 11s, Cane Creek DM G4's, HED Jet RC4/6, Conti GP5k tubeless, with the remaining budget I would get the lightest fitting kit available.
Thank you for sharing that COSINUS!👍🏾
Hello, have you ever ridden a Volagi bike? I currently own a 2014 model in SL steel.
Hi there! I have never ridden one and not that familiar with them either. What is your bike like?
great video again, although not a huge fan of the disc brakes, weight and that stem stack height
@@thegoodwheel Hi Luis, thanks for the reply👍
Great bike, but when I was shopping in 2020 new Emonda was not yet released. Therefore I chose Madone sl6.
Thank you for watching Stanislav👍🏾
I have an Emonda SL6 pro. It is a very comfortable bike. It is not the fastest, nor is it the lightest. I tried a Cannondale super six a couple of weeks ago. Much better in all aspects. Fast, comfortable and a bit lighter than my 2021 Emonda. Definitely I will change the handlebar and stem for integrated carbon bar/stem. The one that comes with the bike looks horrendous. Thank you for your informatives videos. Take care yourself.
Thank you Gil! Enjoy the new bike👍🏾
If the Emonda can comfortably be ridden for 100-150 miles then I’ll go for it. Everything I research points toward the Domane but I fear the extra pounds will kill the climb and speed; and I log 1,000 ft of elevation where I live for every 10 miles I ride.
I Alex, the Emonda is extremely capable all arounder👍🏾
Happy TH-cam algorithm brought me to your channel
So am I! Thanks for watching👍🏾
I wish I can attend your group rides, nothing but good vibes.
If you are ever in South Florida come on out👍🏾

Muchas gracias por tener tanta consideracion asia mi bienestar y de mi familia. Si, estamos bien. La tormenta paso por el lado oeste de el estado y estamos asia el este. Un abraso fuerte mi hermano🙏🏾
My Height is 172cm.. it will fit 52 in size?
5:21 true

The Emonda is not Trek's "downmarket" bike. It's their climbing bike. The Domane is their endurance bike and the Madone is the aero bike.
Each of these models has an SL and an SLR variant. The SL variant is the downmarket option.
I have been EXTREMELY dissatisfied with my brand new Moots Vamoots RSL. It is NOT what I thought it was going to be. To the point that just minutes ago I was looking at the Emonda SLR9 Dura Ace and honestly I think I will buy it and then sell the moots.
Wow! Sorry to hear about that experience with the Moots.
Given the weight of Chinese OEM frames, and the weight of the SLR version, it's an absolute disgrace how heavy the cheaper versions are. If they made all frames lighter and able to clear 32 or 34C, they would have a category killer, and I'd buy one.
I went from Emonda to Madone 🥳🥳
Nice👍🏾
After owning a used Emonda SLR from 2016 and an Emonda sl6 from 2019 - both of which were very good light weight rim-brake climbing bikes - I was very disappointed by the 22 sl6 Emonda, which I bought new thinking it will be just as good of a climber as the previous 2, but with disc brakes and an aero design. However, it turned out to be heavy (especially the wheels), beefy and - while prfeclty fine on the flats - not really a natural climber in my opinion - more like an entry level all-rounder... Switched to a Giant tcr pro and now I'm happy
Hi Ariel! Thank you for sharing you experience with the bike👍🏾
Now I’m really not sure hahaha I want the Madone but I’m afraid it will not be comfortable enough to me … or a good fit for me I should say weight speed and looks matter to me comfort matter too but it comes 4th lol
Decisions decisions 😂
