Ya know Terry as much as I appreciate the girls and their hard work on the mill I always look forward to hearing you share your wisdom. Its like the icing on the cake for this channel with you spreading knowledge when you're free too so thank you for that. And it didn't surprise me seeing Jade still working hard in the background. The beginning made me laugh. Don't worry, I guarantee 100% your father doesn't think you were a mistake!! I'm sure he loves you and is extremely proud of you!!!
Hello Boss nice to hear your expertise on the logs in your yard. Well done Emerald on getting the whole family involved in your videos. Great video here beautifully edited also
As painter Bob Ross would often say "We don't make mistakes, just happy little accidents." Always wonderful watching to learn about quality logging and milling.
I really enjoy the mix of girls working and you explaining things. Everything you and the family have shown is excatly what makes American Dream so desirable. Thanks for all you all do.
I just purchased my first mill for a retirement hobby. I really enjoy the channel and seeing the young people work. The value of good hard work is lost on many. You should be very proud of your kids.
BossMan: *"I was walking around looking at all the mistakes I've made in the last 20 years"* (points to Emerald). That's some top-shelf family ribbing there😊
@@KenBreon Actually I believe quite a few of us noticed, you were skating on thin ice there for a sec. Luckily Em can take a joke, great video, thanks, Would you ever consider starting online sales of some kiln dried hardwoods? Glad the Boss has gotten more comfortable making videos, his input into the thought process of maximizing revenue from logs is very helpful. Way to go Dad! Reno
So happy for the lumber capital crew to see hardwood lumber coming into the inventory for sale! I really hope it adds to both retail sales AND the YT traffic revenue for you all. The whole family works so hard and you deserve to succeed! Can’t wait for more content!
Ha! You can see how much more relaxed Ken is on camera now. Love it. And the family resemblance with the girls is so obvious now too. Great video. Love seeing the whole family. I watch and enjoy you guys everyday.
Honestly, best video yet! Seeing Terry express his hopes and accomplishments in this video, to me he exudes a proud American living his dream not only as a logger and lumberyard owner but also a proud father. Great video!! Thank you...
I really enjoy hearing about the business side of things. The thoughtfulness and planning that goes into processing trees. Please keep these type of videos coming, when you have time, of course!
Thanks for the wisdom boss man! I have worked with wood for 40 years. I always have a great appreciation for the loggers, the mill and the people behind the scenes. Your family is amazing! 👍👌
Excellent, fascinating video. Being city born and bred I had no idea what exactly goes into running a lumber yard. Bossman, keep these coming and congratulate the girls and family for their input into the videos. I wish you every success.
Just wanted to extend kudos to Emerald for her videography. Just like in the movie "What about Bob?" She is taking "baby steps" to perfection. It takes time to become a pro, but you are on your way!
Yes it was very informative and interesting! Loved that you included how you sat down with Em to cook the new plan! :) I just love a good father who really values his kids opinions and views and really listens to them. Mutual respect! Wonderful.
As a ex ,logger, sawmill manager and uwsp forester. 12:19 I love this show. Being a Vermonter ,we had not much hardwood. We cut popple for pallet wood. Slabs were chipped for a wood fueled power plant. I was grading our lumber as I stickered off the edger. I then opened a retail store with the,,upgraded,, wood. From a $130 per thousand pallet wood, to number one ,wide pine at $3.00 bf,. Prices are from 40 years ago.lolol.

It's been happening over the last 25 years! My friends had a home built about 20 years ago. They had a hard time trying to get enough walnut for their cabinets, vanities, staircase and trim. They finally found a retired cabinet maker, who had 750 board feet of walnut in a kiln. They bought it all cheap!
Boss man you have a wonderful family. It's educational everytime you show up. Everything can be improved with time glad to see some of your goals and dreams are being met. Working in a factory, its nice to know the working man can create something for himself.
This was one of the best videos yet! Kudos to the boss and Em for putting this together. I just purchased a "hobby" sawmill and am learning so much from Ya'll!!
Ok, I will admit I enjoy watching the girls run the mill and other machines at the yard. After all you and the boss lady made some very pretty girls. But your videos are also very interesting. I look forward to seeing the next one you do.
Boss man, not only are you interesting in your explanations of various areas of the business, you clearly have the love and respect from the entire family. I hope the hardwood retail really takes off for you as the proceeds are head and shoulders above the wholesale side of the house. I wish I lived closer to your business as I'd happily take some of the cherry and walnut off of your hands. Finally, as a vet, I truly appreciate the donation you're making for a very worthy cause. I will order my hoodie tonight and hope that many other viewers are able to do the same.
I've ALWAYS wanted to do what y'all are doing. Especially as a family, that's so awesome. So I found this video very interesting and educational. Emerald teaches me something nearly every video. I also find it mesmerizing to just watch the videos of the machine doing its work on the wood. I'm a little jealous I don't have one.
I always enjoy hearing from the Boss Man. It's so good to see a man as he thinks through his business plan. I would not regard any of your efforts as being "mistakes". They are simply eliminations of various ideas. It's a refining practice if you will. Looks to me that you are on the right track.
Yes it's fun to watch the girls working together but as a business man I really enjoy your explanations of how you're trying to make your business more effective and yes, profitable. You mentioned at the beginning all of the mistakes you see when you walk around the yard. It would be interesting to have you do a video showing us the mistakes and how you would have done something different and the changes you're now making to improve on the process and the profitability. Thanks for the walk around and your explanation of the hardwood business.
I have been doing what you want to for 21 years now. I love the frugality of it. I still do production sawmill and logging and find the two businesses mesh well together. Keep in mind that other small mills around you are also a good way to procure green lumber while not having to work hard for it. Example I have 3 other sawmills cut sassafras for me whenever they get it in and I am a steady market for them . I dry it ,plane it . I don't have to log it, truck it, saw it, stack it. Good luck and stay safe.
Although I love watching your lovely daughters hard at work it is always nice to hear from the Boss. I love to hear about your reasoning behind what you cut and how it is going to be used. Your concept of as close to zero waste as possible I really appreciate that and there are so many uses for it. Doing what you love and being good at and making a comfortable living for your family is what is really important when the day is over. Having a wonderful family who love each other as your family does is the biggest payday you will ever need. Great job.

The girls doing this work is great (a) eye candy (b) to show the world that they (girls) are quite capable of doing this sort of work. I have been looking for Boss man as he has good insight as to the TOUGH end of logging. Good to see this in todays world , thank you. Even Gramps doing the sawmill maintenance .
I just really enjoy watching this family business work and evolve and thrive. When I first started watching this channel, it was because I am a woodworker from Southern Ontario and I have an interest in all aspects of woodworking; including how and where the various species of wood that I use are coming from and how they are harvested. However, I have recently come to realize that when I am watching this channel of yours, I receive the added bonus of watching a family work together on their family business and facing the challenges of making that business succeed. It is very refreshing to watch. With so many different TH-cam channels to watch out there, yours is like a breath of fresh air. Keep up the great work.
Loved this segment and being a woodworker and carver love the fact that your incorporating some fancy grades of lumber for the artistic side of the woodworking industry. Thanks for taking the time to share your insight it’s always a real treat hearing from you. Blessings!
Converting tree into produce (Fencing posts/guitar body & neck blanks) prior to extraction helps offset some of my costs through increasing the value of product at roadside. You could increase value of lumber at sawmill by creating simple design garden furniture kits for self-assembly (picnic bench/swing seats/love seat etc). Once jigs are set-up, you could make small batches when things are quiet - I'm confident that the girls could handle it! Keep loving each other
I think it's really good what your doing with hardwoods. It's also good that you show the business aspects of log yard in end it's business needs a profit. Around here we have several Amish sawmills all they cut is hardwood ties and pallet boards.
I truly enjoyed watching and listening to you explain what your business is all about. I know I see you and your girls and am fully aware that one day they will go their own way. That is just life with a young family, but just maybe they will find a good young fella that will fit you, your daughters, and the business. I sure hope so!
I have enjoyed every minute of your videos. Each one to me has been educational. I grew up in N E Penna. I live in the south now. I am familiar with the land there. The girls impress me. They have qualities unseen in todays world. May God Bless each of you in your endeavors.
I am from Iowa, I'm a wood worker. this was the best video I have seen so far. this one wants me to hook up my trailer and head your way. I do a lot of custom engravings on small pieces for now, but I am starting in the custom furniture world of wood working. I think my family and I might have to take a business training camp and visit you're lumber yard in the near future. I'm sure we wouldn't be leaving empty handed. Thanks for the awesome content. I have also done photography in the past, not sure which one does the videography, or photography but I see huge strides from one video to the next. keep up the awesome work!!!!! Dave
Always so interesting to hear the thoughts that go into a business and the things that keep you up at night wondering how to get better. If I didn’t live in western Canada I would grab that Honey Locust in a flash. Keep it up, love your channel!
Yes Bossman. In any business endeavor you gotta get every nickel and dime you can think of. So glad to see you know to pass it down too when you do. Keep it up Buddy.

Really love these type of vids, it genuinely helps me understand your business…. Along with that, the way the “Boss” explains it is trully awesome !!!! Thank you 🙏🏻
This discussion was very interesting. It reminds me of farmers and ranchers here in TX trying to calculate the mix of plants or animals that will yield the best return on their investment of time and money with the least detriment to their land. It's a delicate balancing act, and one that I'm glad my living doesn't depend on. One foot in front of another, Boss Man!
For many of my woodworking projects 4' or even 3' lengths are just fine, so my message to you is that shorter lengths of hardwoods can be just as desirable (and therefore as valuable) as longer lengths.
Thank you for your service. My hat is off to anybody who goes to work and produces a product these days. Not everybody can run a profitable business. You guys work hard to produce a renewable product, and I think that is just great. This is all very interesting.
Always great to hear from the Boss Man. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts for the future with us. Good luck with the value added products, they sound like a winner to me.
Absolutely fascinating insight into how you manage your business and are getting into an area that you've been aspiring to for so long. You are a terrific family and I wish you all the very best with your new endeavour. So interesting to learn a bit more about your business.
I’ve sen the girls run the mill and it’s been very educational. But i equally appreciate a look at the long term business strategy. What has worked, what lessons learned, how are your targets changing, what are the pitfalls that keep you up at night. FWIW
Awesome video! Back when I was selling log homes we had people who specified having blue stain pine logs. It was an upcharge because it is relatively rare. I too would wake in the night (always around 3am too) and be unable to shut my brain off thinking of all the aspects of creating and maintaining a profitable business. My family depended on my decisions. Good times those were. I love your wholesome videos and family ties. I will be buying one of the charity shirts. Keep up the good work and all the best to your family. 🙂
I agree with your assessment Boss. The future will not wait, you must seek out new and viable products to keep the public interested. Standard woods will always sell but custom and nitch products make a better income level possible. At 63 I'm as excited for you and wish you the very best.
I grew up in northern MN watching my uncles be lumberjacks and my grandfather milling his own lumber.. watching your channel brings back so many memories.. nowdays I make furniture and only wish I had a place such as yours close to me,
Your doing great , the hard work that you have put in for years is paying off. I'm a wood worker and have always found away to pursue lumber making and furniture building while holding down a job with my local public utility district , no regrets. Now lumber milling & building is my retirement, take care brother and thanks for another inspiring video.
do not know now you did it, but you and your girls are awesome and love watching you guys . Respectfully from Alabama Grijalva Camp

I like your approach to developing the business. I've met a lot of people who believed in "Get Rich Quick" and in the end 1 out of 100 people made it and everyone else burned their money. We're probably very similar in our thinking, because for me, if one day I don't have an idea to make something better, I'll give up the shop. I wish you and your wonderful family a lot of success and all the best. And I look forward to many more editions of "The Daily Dose of Lumber".
As much as it is entertaining watching the girls cut lumber it's very beneficial to listen to you and watch you explain how your business is working how you wanted to work and how harvesting lumber can be such a beneficial thing whenever it's done correctly thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy day to share this information with us it really is enriching
It's fascinating to learn more about your business approach and thought processes. I wish I lived close enough to buy some of your hardwood and support your work. 🙂
They are NOT mistakes. They are learning opportunities. When something doesn't turn out the way that you expect, figure out what went wrong and how to improve the next time. If you don't figure out how to do better, only then is it a mistake. Good job with the channel. I have learned a lot from watching. Thank you for taking the time to explain.
Ken honey locust trees in North Carolina are a big part of the deers diet in snowy winter ,,their banana shape pods turn black and melt up through the snow and the deer love them ,,they will flatten your tires with those thorns tho
I have watched other videos where people talk about firewood being saleable where in some markets the lumber may sit for years with no buyer. I don't have a market for ties, so I cut my centers into pallet stock. Great incite as to your situation.
Good job getting some higher dollar wood from the outers of that Maple. There is a whole market I need to come down and introduce you to for hardwoods while making ties. 4 cuts through the log and there is ZERO waste for you to handle. Even in the firewood logs, there is retail wood worth allot of $$$. Eventually, I'll be passing by and can show you. Peace Walter

A different industry, but same “prayers”. Thanks for the comment. Boss Man.
I like your thinking, it is always forward thinking.
Hey, thank you very much. Boss Man.
I agree with your assessment Boss.
The future will not wait, you must seek out new and viable products to keep the public interested. Standard woods will always sell but custom and nitch products make a better income level possible.
At 63 I'm as excited for you and wish you the very best.
awesome video and she was like what the heck and i saw rare smile from the both of them
I grew up in northern MN watching my uncles be lumberjacks and my grandfather milling his own lumber.. watching your channel brings back so many memories..
nowdays I make furniture and only wish I had a place such as yours close to me,
Your doing great , the hard work that you have put in for years is paying off. I'm a wood worker and have always found away to pursue lumber making and furniture building while holding down a job with my local public utility district , no regrets. Now lumber milling & building is my retirement, take care brother and thanks for another inspiring video.
Thank you for watching. Boss Man.
do not know now you did it, but you and your girls are awesome and love watching you guys .
Thank you for the comment. Boss Man.
Thanks for the comment. Boss Man.
You are exactly right…Boss Man.
The Boss is a really cool guy, that’s a guy I could sit down and have a coffee with and enjoy a conversation.
Wow great video, hope you many years of secess in your business ❤ thanks for your time and informative and entertaining video. MADE IN THE USA🇺🇸
Ken honey locust trees in North Carolina are a big part of the deers diet in snowy winter ,,their banana shape pods turn black and melt up through the snow and the deer love them ,,they will flatten your tires with those thorns tho
Good dude. True human being. Good job. thanks. I love my family too.
Thanks for the comment, Jeff. It is greatly appreciated. Boss Man.
The Boss is my Spirit animal. Coffee in one hand and Chainsaw in the other.
Love the comment. Boss Man.
Peace
Walter
Thanks for the video. I am trying to model my small operation after what y’all are doing. I am so glad the girls are doing so good with the videos. I am old enough to be there daddy, but I am learning so mush watching. I love the family working together. Keep it up!
