As a BYU fan Utah is going to be just fine. If this is the highlight of our recruiting/portal stuff with a bunch of contributors graduating/declaring after going 10-2, we’re cooked long term.
Now a BYU fan with some common sense and honesty. If this is a genuine and sincere post, I would find it hard to root against BYU because of people like you! Be the best BYU fan us Utah fans want to be friends with!
That’s a silly statement. Someone is just bitter Arod still has a job and Gerry never got a shot. BYU got Clegg and now they got Akana as well. A 10-2 team not hitting the portal as hard as a 5-7 team… imagine that. That is reason.

As a cougar fan, I'd say we're becoming more equal with the Utes. KW is still the best head coach in the state of Utah and Utah has more talent but for sure the cougars are on the rise. Kalani has a high ceiling and could go far. For now, heading in the right direction.
First off, the kid is coming off a mission. A lot of return missionaries get sucked into the "got to go to byu" mind set. This doesn't surprise me or worry me. Why are we so worried? BYU had been mediocre since going independent and then they sucked last year. And look where they ended up this year? The sky is not falling for utah football. I'm not losing sleep over a kid who hasn't watched any football much less played a single snap in the last two years.
It’s no longer about, “I like their program/coaches/strength & conditioning/nutrition/conference affiliation”, etc. It’s ALL about who’s going to give me the most NIL. Or at least 90% of the reason players go where they go nowadays. Can’t get excited about anyone anymore, because they could up and leave, or de-commit at anytime. Thank you to those who have destroyed college sports with creating NIL and the transfer portal. Get ready, it’s going to get worse! Unless some MAJOR changes are made.
I think it’s tough to argue that Utah’s PAC12 affiliation did not swing some guys like Britain Covey at BYU’s detriment. I just don’t know that a level playing field in terms of conference membership hurts Utah as much as it helps BYU. That said, I do think Utah is in a vulnerable position with how the Pac12’s demise disrupted their recruiting pipelines. Utah seemed to benefit greatly from the California connections, and it remains to be seen how that can be maintained or replaced in the NIL era without ties to any California schools.
All this fall out we are witnessing falls on Coach Whittingham and his bumbling with the QB situation and ultimately losing 7 games in-a-row. We heard grumblings from the locker room, we seen enigmatic 'tweets' from certain players. I'm not surprised what's going on. Losing the Tulsa WR to Colorado will be more detrimental to next seasons offense then losing Clegg on defense since it just reloads. Its imperative for Coach Scalley to add DC Jay Hill for the 2026 season. Make it happen. GO UTES!
@TheViking1980 Is he supposed to say something mean about the school he's currently employed at? I mean, have you ever in your life seen a coach or manager say disparaging remarks about a school they were currently working for, I'll wait... Hilarious.
@THEeyepatch11 Yes I have. Bob Davies New Mexico, Bob Knight Indiana, Brian Flores Miami, etc. Look I am a dyed in the wool Cougar but I do hope Utah as a better season next year. Scalley as done well as DC.
I think we will be just fine losing Williams and Clegg though Williams stings. Lyons, Williams and Zipperer plus Whittemore should be fine plus our two new freshmen WR look good. I would like us to start getting bigger DE's though. Utah keeps getting small LB size DE through the portal 6'2" 230 lb and trying to play them at DE and they get mauled be 300 lb offensive tackles or not even seeing the field. We need at least Fano and Fillinger size Defensive ends if not bigger imo.
the kid that flipped to the TDS is a return missionary, if I read that right. The TDS recruits those players on their mission all the time. Not worried
Recruiting in the state was always going to even out when BYU moved up the P4 level. Also Hunter probably sees how much BYU could use pass rush and sees the opportunity
If you don't want recruits to flip to go to BYU don't let them go on missions. Every lds athlete on a mission is asked by every companion he has and every lds church member why he isn't going to BYU, only his companions or members from SLC will approve of him going to Utah. Everyone lds person outside of SLC thinks Utah is an anti- lds school.
doubt that was much of a factor tbh. It more has to do with BYU going 10-2 and Utah going 5-7. A lot of BYU kids committed to Utah because they were the better program, and now that's not necessarily the case so we are seeing those same kids flip back.
BYU's poach was a return-missionary American Fork product; tough to lose, especially with his perception that BYU is relatively better (did it become monetarily better, too?), but Utah can attract decent defensive players. Losing yet another offensive back to Arkansas (after Ja'Quinden Jackson in recent years), however, hurts a bit more. We don't want to start being an involuntary pipeline for the Razobacks. And as for Jo Williams flipping to Colorado, we don't want our players to start becoming "Prime" targets, either.

Nope, farther from the truth! Utah didn't ditch BYU, Utah was invited to the Pac12 because of their success in football. This has absolutely nothing to do with BYU and don't make it about BYU because it's not! This has everything to do with the respect Utah has earned as a solid football program. Utah won't win all the recruiting in-state battles, but they'll win the majority of them and then land some good ones outside the state.
