    Germany only fielded 20-40 armored cars in World War 1, mostly on the Eastern Front. Not much about their operational history is known but they did play an important role in the German Civil War and the Weimar Republic.

    "This killing machine of yours is sure turning some heads" -John Marston
    To me there is nothing more poetic and terrifying then early motorized warfare and machines like this. Something as simple as taking a 1910 Chevy truck and mounting a maxim gun on the back just makes my mind race with ideas and imagery that is almost H.G. Wells like.

      One of my favorite missions in gaming history.. I always thought that time period from the 1910s was so interesting.. modern technology taking over warfare.. Punitive Expedition aka the Pancho Villa Expedition.. is something like that missions.. Bandits vs the US Army with armored cars, motorcycles with machine guns.. so wild..

    I mean, if I was a rioter and saw an armoured car with machine guns ready to mow people down like in the Somme, I'd probably leave, rethink my life choices and why I live in this country.

    • @tomgjgj
      @tomgjgj 6 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      James Tang. Thing is, in those days, rioters were often ex-soldiers. They dug into entrentched positions. With machine-guns.
      www.history.com/topics/weimar-republic
      Those aren't soldiers in the barricade. They're civillian Spartacists, left-wing revolutionaries.
      They also improvised armoured trucks with machine-guns.
      c7.alamy.com/comp/ERGE6F/german-november-revolution-in-berlin-germany-1918-car-with-machine-ERGE6F.jpg
      They marched in formation and used military tactics. Definetly not the kind of riot you're probably thinking of.
      Their Right-wing equivalents were the Freikorps. They fought for the government with the same methods, alongside the downsized army.

    • @ferbthe2gadgetguy
      @ferbthe2gadgetguy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Tom J wait so you're telling everyone that riots aren't back then weren't by amateurs but ex-soldiers that are scary and has guns?
      Then why did they want water cannons?!

    • @tomgjgj
      @tomgjgj 6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      OFFICIALLY they wanted water cannons. But, like the dude said, they often just kept the machine-guns. Seriously, Google ''Spartacus Uprising''. They had to use artillery to take these ''rioters'' out.

    • @Edax_Royeaux

    Synopsis of the video: The Germans had 20 to 40 armored cars, mostly on the Eastern Front. They frequently provided security behind the German lines. During a battle with the Romanians, the Germans assembled a combined arms task force that encircled the enemy. The task force may have included one or more German armored cars. In other words, a German commander rediscovered Napoleon's combined arms army corps blending infantry, cavalry, and artillery. Let me recommend David Chandler's masterpiece book - "The Campaigns of Napoleon."

    So this scrapyard crawler saved history.. cant find these now but check the yards and backwoods, never know what's there. I found a 1920s tractors gears in a canal way. Turned out it was a pulling tractor/loght rail gauge engine used to replace horses which the pizza and bar spot down the street was the coach house for these horses. We also found a tugs engine and shaft in the same canal. Both were taken by museums in Niagara Ontario.

      Yep, it's not translated word for word but it explains better what the term means - "Schutzpolizei" (protective police, from earlier terms like Schutzmannschaft (protective force) before _police_ became an international term) was the name for the "normal" police force, as opposed to police dealing with criminal investigations (Kriminalpolizei), paramilitary organisations (Sicherheitspolizei), and others.

    A question for out of the trenches. During the second world war my grandfather, and everyone in the county, were restricted from joining any military service because they needed people to mine the coal that powered the ships. It happened in both wars. If there was some important job (for the war effort) the males were not send to the front. My grandfather, his dad and brother were working as lumberjacks in WW1 to build a bridge over the Rhine. My father was working for the railway in WW2. None of them joined the fighting forces.

      I believe Great Britain gave quite a few armored cars to Russia and their Middle Easteren allies, so the possibility is there. Then again, Romania probably wasn't as strategic important. But I do love the idea of a small country like Romania being the only ones in The Great War to challenge the Cars of The German War Machine with their own. :-D

    It is largely not stated that Germany had a civil war at the tail end and after the First World War, a struggle of ideology inspired by the Russian Revolution with Communism versus Capitalism as a simple explanation. Those armoured cars would have been very handy, Britain used light tanks in Ireland as well as Armoured Cars during ‘The Troubles’.
    The early British Armoured Cars has day wooden spoked wheels which were soon found to be useless in action if damaged, soon unrated to cast metal!

    Once again another awesome episode; however...
    ...in the last weekly episode (at 7:50), Indy said the German vehicles had steel wheels as they didn't have access to rubber And yet throughout this episode I couldn't take my eyes off the rubber wheels and the spares on the side of this car (and in all the photos).
    So I guess my question is "How did the Germans get their rubber after the war and in the early days of the Weimar Republic?"
    Loving your work and starting to feel sad that we only have 7 months to go :-(

    Nothing like the roller or the lanchester that even the Austin's nicer lol I love the mk1 Romfell that was built on a Mercedes Benz chassis it was a sport car so it was low and sleek with a back like a boat! It was redeemed to fit for use as it scared there poor horsys! Whoppy do lol couldn't believe what I was reading but then they built a mk2 Romfell based on a fiat chassis omg why!old but the Germans used them alot! My favourite being from Belgium the Armoured Minerva is my favourite and with being an armour modeller theres a high end company called copper state models who are bringing these high detailed kits out and all the history to go with them! That's the icing on the cake for me! Learning all the history as I build each of my models! Its amazing what I have learnt!

    Indy! Great video! Does the Munster museum also include WW2 vehicles? Are war museums respected or revered in Germany, considering they were on the losing end of two great wars?

      ARIXANDRE I'd say war museums are respected here, as Germany puts great importance on the education about the war (especially on the "Never again!"), but with this in mind they feel somewhat different. They are in my experience (although I haven't been to all that many non-German museums) more focused on the gritty reality of war and on disspelling the glorification than on the somewhat abstract display of the tools of war.

    What was fast food like in WWI? It existed as far back at the 19th Century in the UK with Fish and Chips, did it see any expansion or utilization during the War for civilians or soldiers?

    • @Marc83Aus
      @Marc83Aus 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fast food was when they put supplies in tanks to feed the troops whilst assault and battle was still ongoing. Outstanding stroke of genius not letting your troops starve for a few days waiting for the lines to be ties back to supply and logistics further back.
