  • Introducing the all-new Toyota Mirai. Key facts:
    • Second generation of Toyota’s ground-breaking, zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell electric saloon.
    • Built on Toyota’s modular GA-L platform, enabling improved system packaging and a more spacious, five-seat cabin.
    • New platform allows for an extra (third) hydrogen fuel tank to be added, contributing to a 30% increase in the car’s driving range to around 650km.
    • Focus on building more emotional appeal through design and driving quality, in addition to the Mirai’s eco-performance.
    • Completely redesigned fuel cell system, with significant reductions in the size and weight of all principal components.
    • Installing a fully revised fuel cell electric powertrain on the GA-L vehicle platform achieves an ideal 50:50 chassis balance.
    • Toyota targets a 10-fold increase in global Mirai sales.

    To Mr. Musk and all his following nay-sayers on the Internet: every technology deserves a spot light. This tech has vast potential! BEVs get to what they are today after numerous explosions and accidents. There will be a learning curve for fuel-cells but their starting position is even longer (700km) than what all BEVs can do best. Let the better tech win~ Better, let all potent techs have their places in market and give us less SOx, NOx, and PM to worry about.

      Hydrogen cars _are_ electric cars.

    • @Friendoo
      @Friendoo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@thethirdman225 No. You can refuel much faster. The production is due to a much smaller battery more efficient, the car reaches 550-650 km even in reality and the car doesn’t need so much Lithium as an electric Car. Let me tell you why Electric Cars are the future of the past: The production of this huge battery blocks doesn’t only need energy ( lots and lots of energy) it needs Lithium. Lithium is an ending resource and probably won’t last for every car on the street to be electric. Do you see the problem ? We’re driving in the wrong direction! In probably 10 Years half of the cars is electric and then everybody will notice: We don’t have Lithium 🤷🏻‍♂️. Basically Fuel Cell Cars are electric cars without the biggest problem of electric cars !

  • @vj.joseph
    @vj.joseph ปีที่แล้ว

    My professor in college during my engineering project had worked on a fuel cell project in india. We have some super interesting ideas on it. I did my engineering project in energy systems. I am super jazzed up see fuel cell cars becoming very common. Re utilisation of some existing oil infra for hydrogen transport can be done too. Oil pipelines like petrol and diesel pipelines can be reused after their supply is finished for hydrogen supply. Water can be given directly to everyone in the car itself,rather than just wasting it and remaining water can supplied back to filling tank through a second nozzle near the fuel nozzle in the same fuel line while refueling. A small portable electrolysis kit with solar panels can be given by the company for remote hydrogen production in emergency. This water supply for driver can be especially useful in the african countries.

    Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are the new electric car of the 1980s.
    Specifically: they are amazing tech that will be held back for 30 years until finally having their day in the sun. At some point the production of gaseous hydrogen will become trivial, but that’s a problem for the future to solve.
    It’s cool that Toyota believed in it enough to bring it to market first, but this tech isn’t going to ride the wave that electric cars currently are.

    So in order to make hydrogen, you’ll need 9 liter of water to make 1 liter of hydrogen, it takes 1279,8 liter of water to run this car for 700km!! That much water here in the Netherlands cost around €1,80 euro. This is the future of driving!!! For the same distance I paid over €100 euro in gasoline. The big obstacles we need to face are big oil’s companies like Shell that make revenue over hundreds of billions of dollars each year, they won’t easily accept hydrogen.

      Hi. Thanks for your comment. On 29th October, Teknikens Värld conducted their “Elk test” on plug-in hybrid SUVs from various manufacturers including the Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid AWD. All of them failed this specific independent test. Saying that, the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid has successfully passed all development testing and fully meets all safety regulations in force in the market on a worldwide basis. Furthermore, it also complies with Toyota internal standards, which surpass the regulatory requirements in a wide array of testing circumstances. It must also be noted that the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid is fully equipped with the most advanced version of the Toyota Safety System including a comprehensive range of the latest safety technology, among them a Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert and Vehicle Stability Control. Following Teknikens Värld’s evaluation, we have replicated their Elk test, which includes an extreme obstacle avoidance manoeuvre, and have produced similar results. As a countermeasure, we will now take steps to ensure that RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid can pass Teknikens Värld’s Elk test. In the meantime, we would like to reassure our customers that the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid remains safe to drive. However, in the spirit of continuous improvement, we will make this upgrade available to all customers who would like it within January 2021, and we will introduce the upgrade into mass production shortly afterwards. Cars for UK customers will go into production in February and we expect them to be fitted with this software update from factory. Thanks.

    The infrastructure needed for everyone to charge a car at home long term would be huge. Not to mention wires on pavements etc. Plus as no electric is created on the move a very heavy battery is needed on the vehicle to get good range.
    This solution only need the petrol pumps to instead be hydrogen pump, a much smaller battery can be on the car this overall weight should be down, even with the fuel cell to create electric I assume?
    So quick fill ups rather than long charges. Less weight overall for the vehicle and longer range. logical to keep investing and researching it, will it be the future? I don’t know 🤷‍♂️ but well done Toyota. FYI any chance of moving the hydrogen cells lower and making an estate version .

      It's true, the current refuelling network is limited, and focused around London, but that hasn't stopped the Metropolitan Police from clocking up over 250,000 miles in their fleet. Fuel providers need to see a viable product on the market before the commit to infrastructure, and that's one of the reasons we put the Mirai on sale a few years ago. Thanks.

      Hi. It may be one of the most technically advanced cars on the planet, but Mirai’s servicing needs are comparatively straightforward. A service can be accomplished by one person within a one-hour time slot. You can see how it is done here: fal.cn/3cF8Z
      In terms of pricing, servicing for the outgoing Mirai is currently included in the £750 monthly fee, along with hydrogen, so we don't really have a price. It would cost around the same as a regular vehicle though!
      Once the new Mirai is on sale, we have more information about offers. Thanks.

    electric motor ??? how does it works ?

    • @toyotauk
      @toyotauk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks for your interest in the Mirai. This is a FCEV, powered by Hydrogen. You fill up with hydrogen fuel, in the same way as you buy gasoline or diesel at a filling station. The fuel is contained in high-pressure tanks and fed into a fuel cell stack, where the hydrogen and the oxygen found naturally in the air react with each other and generate electricity. As in a petrol-electric hybrid, the electricity is boosted in voltage to drive the electric motor. Further energy is captured in a battery every time the car brakes or slows down, which contributes to even better fuel economy. Thanks.

      @@toyotauk Thanks for the reply. Just saw the video of the puncture test with the 50cal. Good stuff. Personally I would still be a bit hesitant. It would be interesting to see what it does take to have a catastrophic failure. Seeing that might point out the unlikeliness of any danger from the tanks themselves. Or at least that the tanks are the least of your problems if such forces are involved. As of right now, the placement of the tanks by the back seat would put them right below my kids. Either way, good to see electric cars evolving to address the one major problem with them.

      That's just for now. The future is probably going to involve filling stations manufacturing their own hydrogen, using renewable energy. That eliminates a lot of costs, like transportation and storage. But obviously, that kind of infrastructure takes a long time to build. Like the original big screen TVs, the whole thing is going to cost a lot less once the uptake increases.
