LOVE YOUR VIDEO! Thanks. I too am a black female who visited Italy in 2013. Experienced racism once in Rome but it was quickly eradicated by the awesomeness of the rest of the population. Rented an apartment in Venice for a week and intended to do some plein air painting but, because I took my mother with me, my plans changed to accommodate her. Ergo, no painting/art at all. Overall, AMAZING EXPERIECE and a MUST REPEAT. Hope you return and paint... paint... and paint some more. Will keep watching. LOL
I think Venice is the most beautiful place I’ve ever visited. The light is unbelievable and the color of the water just can’t be duplicated at least I can’t. Like you I took hundreds of photos. I hardly slept, went walking late at night and before the sun was up, no one around. It was a magical place and holds a special place in my heart. Thanks for sharing your trip and reminding me of mine.

A great “paintcation” location that I highly recommend is Prague!!! It’s so walkable and looks like a fairy tale! I was there two years ago and am now just getting into drawing, so I’ve been practicing my skills with my pictures! You must go!!😊

My ideal paintcation locations are several cities in Italy, Paris, France, London, England, Lagos, Nigeria, Accra, Ghana, Freetown, Sierra Leone, and Havana, Cuba. Any of those countries would be a good place for me to start.
Also thank you for sharing your experiences with us in Venice, the good and the bad. This video has been very enlightening especially since I hope to travel and take a tour of many cities in Italy one day soon.

But seriously, Italy is at the top of my list to travel to - I have never been but I've spent countless hours researching where I'd go, where I'd stay, where I'd paint...being kinda psycho about it 😆
In 2018 we had a 2 week honeymoon trip booked which never happened (Wolfy lost his job a month before we were supposed to go) so I still have the whole itinerary saved for "someday." Fly into Bologna, spend a few days there before city-hopping our way down to Amalfi coast where we have several days of bliss 😍 I'd be painting and filming nonstop too! But I think I would also be overwhelmed by the beauty. Also I would need lots of play money for gelato and coffee 😶
Thankfully, Wolfy doesn't mind when I sit and paint, he's so patient, but I still feel kinda bad. Solo traveling is wonderfully freeing. Maybe I need a mini vaca to one Italian city...

My kids usually don't have much patience for outdoor painting. So I take photos and paint when I get home currently.
@stacy s Yea it's more challenging when you travel with others..then again it's sometimes nice to focus on painting and let them make all the plans 😂

I live in Australia...when I visit family in UK I have sometimes flown via Paris, but next trip I will check fares via Venice. I went there when I was 12, now I'm 75 and have taken up watercolors again last year! Love your work!

If I went on a painting holiday it'd have to be the Canadian wilderness or somewhere with no people, so I could avoid the awkwardness of people watching me paint. :D

@@SketchesnScrubs LOL I'm a disgruntled lawyer who enjoys watching color go on paper in all sorts of ways but watercolor is my favorite - I enjoy urban sketching too - I live a about 2 miles from the NYC border so we have lots of 'urban;, not enough nature, but I'm fortunate enough to have several beautiful natural places I can visit easily [and the beach! I do have moments where I love island life]. I have terrible spatial relations in general so it's an exercise of will but the more I do it the more i learn to 'see' things as they are! I love riding along with you via youtube :)

I did a solo trip to Venice last October and it was amazing! I filled a strathmore travel sketchbook and it was such a joy to paint there. It was super fun to revisit my trip through yours!

Im actually heading on my next solo trip to Southern France in May. I’ll be in Toulouse. Im from the US and that Italy trip was my first ever solo trip. It was so scary before I went and once I did it, I realized how empowering solo traveling is.
I love this! That is so cool that we could use the pictures because I was watching them and thinking oh I’d like to try and paint that or that or that so thank you! I would be interested in the PDF of the pictures! The colors there are gorgeous! I’m in the US and have not been yet! Venice was my number 1 choice for a paint vacation. Maybe Florence.

So sorry to hear about your encounter with the shop owner who didn't want your money. I loved taking this tour of Venice with you. I would love to travel to New Zealand and paint to my heart's content. That probably won't happen since my partner doesn't understand my obsession with watercolour! 🎨🤓🦄🌈🎨 My favourite part was the admitting you like a more modern hotel experience. Hello! What a wonderful vacation and such an inspiration to just go! I really love Venice myself and haven’t been in the past 10 years. I’m certainly going back and I might do some sketching as well. By the way, as far as a recommendation my daughter does watercolor professionally and she uses water from the ocean, lake, river or whatever place she is visiting and paints with it. It’s a great way to bring more than a memory with you. Thank you for sharing your trip with us! I just can’t wait to go back! 💕

I want to paint everywhere I go now. I started sketching just a little bit before the pandemic. So I haven’t really travelled yet to sketch except for a very short weekend trip to Montréal. In October we’re going to a cabin at a provincial park which should provide fabulous autumn scenery for me to paint.
P.S. I’m glad you didn’t give that racist your money by buying from his store. And I’m also very sad that you had that experience. 😔

Venice looks beautiful. I always go on vacation by myself as I usually prefer different things to the people around me for such trips as well that I just live going by myself and doing whatever I'm in the mood for. The recent years I've taken my sketchbook along as well and with some trips I do a lot of sketching and watercolor while with others my supplies barely leave my bag.
I LOVE fancy rooms and such and almost always make sure to book a room with a tub. But I do choose a pretty view as well as close to certain must see areas over comfort. Also, prefer breakfast to be included. It forces me out of bed early and be presentable. Otherwise sleeping in with those wonderful beds is what my stupid head will do 🤣 one of the musts I find is visiting art and book stores wherever I go. And I'm so sorry you were treated that way! He certainly did not deserve your presence nor your money. More than enough other places that DO love to welcome you at their establishment.

Loved this video so much! Venice!! I've never traveled alone, but it's something I'm interested in but I'm not ashamed to admit I'm frightened to do so. My supervisor has started taking solo trips and she raves about them, and watching this video was very encouraging. I live in the states and I visited a friend some years ago, before I started back with art, and we went to the national parks. I'd love to do that again so that I could draw and paint those huge open spaces. And yes to the PDF!
What a wonderful stay you had, I LOVE Venice it is the most wonderful place in the world, the light is amazing and every corner is a painting waiting to happen. How awful that shop owner was, what a prat, I am glad you didn't buy anything from him, he did not deserve your custom. Loved the trip vlog! I have never travelled solo, but think it would be a cool experience to do something like this with another painter friend. My family tends to rush me (unintentionally) when I shop in art stores. I have one small local art store at home and one chain store that is more of a craft store with a small art section, so I really enjoy seeing your videos with full art store shelves!! I am so sorry you had such a rotten experience at your final stop. I’m glad you put everything back and didn’t support that store!! The rest of your trip sounds wonderful!
I love that you took a trip alone so you could focus on your painting. This is a master level move. Really enjoying your travel vlogs, especially the ones where you visit local art stores. I'm really sorry you had such a terrible experience in that art store, that racist shopkeeper doesn't deserve your patronage. Would you be able to share the store name so viewers can avoid it? Last year I found painting vacation in France, It's my dream summer vacation. It's rather expensive but would love to go one day.

@@SketchesnScrubs crossing my fingers for black paper! I got the clairefontaine from jackson's it's pretty cheap (like 30p a sheet?) and works fine.
Yeah, Lake District is a group or car only holiday. My partner is disabled so we can't do much hiking but you don't need to spend hours upon hours walking through mud to see beautiful views. The hotel we stayed at had the most breathtaking view of one of the lakes, with the fog floating above it. Magical. I should definitely try painting it, though painting fog sounds like a tough challenge! xxx

This video was so great, and I'm glad you had such an amazing trip!! I've been to Italy ,also before I started painting, but I have about 200000 pictures!! I would love it if you shared some Venice pictures to paint! I've been thinking it would be fun to set up some way to share my pictures with people, but I just haven't looked into the best way to do that. I'm really hoping to go on an art adventure this year- maybe just to someplace in-state, like up north in Minnesota!
I’m believe if you want to paint, you almost have to travel solo. When I travel with others, there just isn’t sufficient time to sit in one place for any length of time, and even when I do, they always want to talk to me. It is hard to get in the zone.

Last time when I was in Italy I was in boutique store. Found beautiful silk dress but it was to small on me. I did not get it. The owner was so angry and rude she told me to leave.

@@SketchesnScrubs I live in the middle of the US now - in Kansas - though I grew up on the east coast. I do watch Sarah Burns and that's probably why my dream paintcation is Scotland. 😁 But my dream list could be 100+ if I thought about it too long. I'm a painter, primarily using watercolor and acrylic, but I love dabbling in gouache and colored pencils and markers and oil pastels and and and...As for subject matter, just about anything is an option. No matter what, I love to capture calm and solitude and beauty through paint. Can't wait to see more of your videos!

I’m sorry that shop owner was so rude to you. My vengeful self couldn’t help but wish you’d taken a page out of the “Pretty Woman” script, bought bags and bags of art supplies from his competitor, then gone back to his shop and said, “ Remember me? Guess I wasn’t wasting your competitor’s time! Could’ve been your sale if you hadn’t been such a racist asshole.” But that’s just me.😂 My husband and I were engaged in Venice. Your video made me want to return and paint! Grazie!

I went to Japan in 2019 ( 3 months ).
And thought it was going to be my creative, artistic awakening but once I was there I struggled to do so.
I really wanted to paint but it didn’t happen.

Well, I grew up in the 90’s ( 86 baby ). And thus was blessed with the best outlet I could have asked for… Animes😌😌😌.
Which also fueled my artistic awakening. Guess which Magical girl I was known to draw.👦🏽👦🏽👦🏽👦🏽
So once I decided I want to travel, Japan was in the Top 3 list.
I travel to Japan every 2 years. 2015, 2017 & 2019.
2021 fell off. We know why.
So 2023 shall it be.
Thank you for sharing this video! I dream of travel. I did travel for work a little bit before the pandemic (to Munich, Germany) and my photos were of doors. Interesting doors. And building details. I dream of traveling to Greece and Italy, also Iceland, the UK, New Zealand...so many places! And I am so sorry you had a racist ass being terrible to you. He shot himself in the foot, losing a customer. I'm sorry that it was a blemish on what sounds like an otherwise LOVELY trip. I would love to hear what worked for you specifically for your travel art setup as well.

@@SketchesnScrubs yes I usually paint nature landscapes usually on beaches, I’m still new to it though it takes me a few hours to paint something 😭🤣 I’m going to Venice and lake como next year and I hope to paint then, your videos are alot of help! So Thankyou 💕

Hey what a great vlog and it looks like you had a fabulous time. I'm really disappointed but not at all surprised by what happened in the art shop. I've lived here for over 20 years and have witnessed and been on the receiving end of unacceptable racist behavior. I'm really glad you didn't give that guy a penny of your money!

I’m sorry you were treated that way. When I visited Italy in 1997 we were treated similarly in some stores. Same in Spain. I think because we were Americans 🤷🏻♀️

The art store situation was terrible ! How nasty and so sorry for this rascism (it really does sound prejudiced behaviour) BUT i loved watching this vlog it was so relaxing and your art work was beautiful ❤
