Kind of what I was thinking. His Alcatrazz live tone was cleaner, as was his playing. Same with early RF. His tone now is sloppy and percussive, much "dirtier" sounding than it used to be... in a bad way.

The solo was only good between about 3:08-3:48. The rest is just a bunch of shred jibberish. Malmsteen can be really creative when he wants to but knows his fans mostly want a bunch of mindless shred...so he gives it to them.
1/ Take "E" harmonic minor scale 2/ Spend 8 years Just playing UP and DOWN on the neck between 7 and 15 frets 3/Again Run UP and DOWN on only 1st string. 4/ Use always Reverb if you want to hide your weaknesses. 5/ Stop asking yourself if you have to play alternate or economy picking otherwise your are in A BIG trouble, Just run UP and DOWN on the neck!!!! 6/ Finally you are a bad copy of Y.Malmsteen with white beard and With time you realize that this music is really Boring and it has a relationship with puberty but not music then you decide to play Jazz but it's too late and this is your story.
That's what generally happens in the main solo of a concert, the guitarist usually goes overboard. Keep in mind this isn't a song it's just a solo spot. He does have many great songs with melodic development and excellent rhythms.
