JELLY CUT : A CLASSIC FOR ALL TIME
Lijo Jose Pellissery does it again. JELLY CUT is a classic, a movie for all time, dealing with man's primitive instincts and primeval desires . The film depicts the massive public outcry and total chaos over the escape of a buffalo from a slaughterhouse. Life of the village is thrown out of gear as the villagers set out to hunt down the animal on the run.
At times we might wonder what the hullabaloo is all about. Along the way you can see moralists who suffer from a real lack of morality, and law-enforcers who wash their hands of emergency situations, before finally being overwhelmed by mob fury. You also see sons who think that jumping on the bandwagon is more important than caring for a dying father.
The story, an allegory of a wretched human destiny, is set in a nondecripit village by the forest, which of course could be regarded as a microcosm of human society. Despite all the accoutrements of civilization, human beings remain the same on the inside. The trappings of refinement and sophistication are just a facade. Base passions and desires break loose at the slightest provocation.
It is a world with which we are all familiar though it might at times appear a little weird. For one thing, eating and drinking seems to be the only activity that the people are interested in. This is the prime concern of the parish priest as well as the father who is getting ready for his daughter's wedding. Man has not grown up from the original hunter and food gatherer status. You never get to see a person pursuing the finer things of life, such as going to school or college, reading a book, making a speech, enjoying a movie, making friends with another, dancing, or even singing a song. You don't even see children at play. What you get to hear is a few songs sung by drunken revellers, but that only reminds you of your early ancestors. Even the heroine rejects the 'gentlemanly' overtures of the hero, and succumbs only to a violent show of animal appetite.
The whole village is engaged in a virtual hunt. In this most frantic pursuit they turn their backs on everything that makes life worthwhile. Caution is thrown to the winds, the animal wreaks havoc on the village, lives are lost, and property destroyed. For some the occasion provides an opportunity to avenge personal insults. Lawlessness prevails throughout. Violent scuffles break out between rival groups, each claiming the object of the pursuit to be their own.
The whole movie presents a scary situation. The sense of horror is heightened by reccurring images of the knife, the burning torch, the blood, the abattoir, and bloody meat being chopped. In the end it turns out that these people are never able to catch hold of what they have been seeking after all. It is significant that the movie ends before they realize the truth, because death draws the curtain, and 'the rest is silence'. The fruits of the labour put in by these people are ultimately enjoyed by some abominable creatures who, again, compete with each other for the spoils. Here the urge to compare this sorry state of affairs with the human situation is irresistible. The hunters seem to be pursuing an ILLUSION. The animal could be a symbol of religion, God, purpose of life as taught by religion, happiness, fulfilment, or whatever. The movie is a parody of what happens in the real world: People waste a whole lifetime wallowing in superstition and hoping for salvation and eternal bliss in another world, without being aware of the difference between fact and fancy. Such people behave like savages from the stone age, without being aware that they are playing into the hands of predators.
