I think a giveaway is a fun idea. I really wish more laptops were as up gradable as the T440P. Soldering everything to the main board just6 creates more E waste, and do we really need more ewaste? Also, I really appreciate that you've been emphasizing living smaller and simpler. I find that most of the big tech youtubers, intentionally or not, contribute to this toxic cycle of constant upgrades and make their audiences feel like they need the latest and greatest hardware when they really don't.
A year ago I needed a fairly cheap laptop for the university, that was resistant and easy to repair, because I was starting to do field practices. your video from 3 years ago was the push that made me decide for the t440p, I am totally in love with it, I have been doing the craziest mods to it, thanks for your video
When I moved due to university studies I was considering a thinkpad like this because of its upgradeability. The only reason I didn't end up with one is because I first wanted a notebook with about the same performance of my desktop, and I also wanted the upgradeability, which as you know is hard to find on a new system unless you fork up the cash for a "gaming" notebook, which is what I did. I wish more companies made actually upgradeable notebooks but I guess that's not enough stonks.

The T440p is my dream laptop because of its upgradeability, ports, etc. And since I didn't own a laptop ever in my life, I plan to earn and buy a 2nd hand of it online. What a great comparison though since the T440p still capable despite of a 10 years of age.

This is my first introduction to your videos, (thank you, TH-cam algorithm) but I suspect your audience would give your T440 a good home. I think a giveaway is a fine idea. Best of luck moving to Japan. I have visited 3 times and fell deeper in love with every visit.
Moved from Italy to Australia and watching this from my T440P - you're right: it's been tricky to carry it when moving with all my stuff but i just couldn't leave it behind! Still working fine and relying on GeForce Now so i don't have to give up on gaming :) Nice video! If T440P is ever going to fail i'm moving to T14 just like you did
The old thinkpads are fantastic. A T480 is another great option for a budget used laptop. The ram and ssd are still upgradeable and come with an 8th gen Intel processor
I really like this as a follow up as not long after 2011, Id say maybe 2013ish? I noticed laptops really started to slim down a lot at this point likely in part due to things like the removal of the CPU socket laptops commonly used to have (not exactly sure when this change began to happen) and battery packs were getting slimmer and so on. Really quite a transitional time period for laptops in general where we'd finally start to see good 1080p screens and touch capability, usb 3, ssds you name it. At this point, if you compared a 2013 laptop to your average laptop from 2008, the changes were massive.
t440p here still in 2023..:) solid notebook with good upgrade options.. use mine mostly for music editing/archive /live performance or browsing and email/open office. a bit on the heavier side, but its build like a tank!
Man, I'm still loyal to my heavily modified t440p! Mostly because I'm cheap and I like to customize my stuff. Mine has dual SSDs to dual-boot, an i7 4810mq, an extra audio dac in place of the DVD burner, plus I soldered in a USB C charging port. I really am in love with this machine and will be sad when it finally does bite the dust.
Nice comparison. I've been considering an old Thinkpad or some other laptop that's not a "soon to be e-waste" for a while. I'm in the process of configuring/building my main machine as a hypervisor, so having a laptop around helps a lot. I'd probably go with older machine, since I don't travel a lot and it wouldn't be my main machine anyway. Besides Thinkpads I also looked into laptops made by framework. They are made to be modular/repairable, basically an antithesis to Apple products. Nice taller 3:2 aspect ratio screen too. Although CPU on them is still soldered to the motherboard, MB+CPU combo upgrades are available, but somewhat expensive. They also have replaceable/customizable ports as modules and ability to buy OEM replacement parts to even different weight/resistance screen hinges! Not sure about their keyboard quality tho. But again, it's a new laptop which makes it expensive. My old ASUS died few months ago. Had really weird problems with it for the pas 4 years, where windows kernel decided that it wasn't compatible with that hardware anymore?? Some voltage regulation missing / not working, so probably a hardware failure. Worked fine with Linux, but finally died few months ago. The only windows that could potentially run on it was the version that they use in ATM's or gas pumps, but yeah, not doing that. :D I sometimes wish it made sense for companies to re-release some old models for people that would like to get them new and in spec they choose. Laptops, cars too. Would get some chunky thinkpad with all bells and whistles and a bmw e30 or such. :D
I recently bought a T450s off ebay to replace a busted chromebook. It's my first Thinkpad. I love it. I didn't know you could swap the function key like that. I need to do that, as I hit it by accident all the time! Anyhoo, a giveaway would be cool. Cheers.

Wow, I had to comment when I saw you pulling out that American Mcgee Alice game. Did not expect that while looking for info on the T14 Thinkpad. It's one of the few games from my childhood (originally bought by my dad to play) that i was able to keep in perfect condition. :)
Loving the new for me Thinkpad X270 I got off ebay. Love it so much I put my much more modern and powerful Ideapad with Ryzen 5500U in a drawer and haven't touch it since!
I ordered an X260 off of Korea's equivalent of Amazon and mistakenly received an X270 (there was a typo in the header, but the X270 was what they intended to sell). It is my first Thinkpad, but I can't imagine loving a different laptop more. The second she dies, I suspect I'll order another. Of the different bits of technology I've had over the years, it is by far my favorite and exceeded my expectations in every way. I wholeheartedly endorse this little workhorse.
Aha! I just got a T440p for about 25 bucks sold as scrap laptop. It turns out that the problem was just a blown backight fuse. Fixed that, give it a battery and an SSD. Really feel like a boss. Even cheaper than my X220 bought at about the same time, also sold as scrap laptop.
I had a chunky laptop like that once, a Dell Precision M6800. At least with a giveaway it has a better chance of not becoming e-waste and ending up in the hands of a Thinkpad enjoyer.
I love my 230x, I do wish it was more powerful because it does easily ramp up cpu usage. its capable for daily task like a chrome book is and at the time it was the better deal, but I wouldnt mind more

I also have a lenovo thinkpad T440p, but it has an i5 4200m, 4GB RAM with no M.2 SSD Card and I do not enjoy playing GTA5 on my PC and some older 3D games, the idea of a giveaway would be nice. maybe having that laptop would be a huge thank you.
There is T14 with a card reader. Like, it is literally an option on every Thinkpad since ages. (Lenovo has it as an option, I think 10$, only because of some weird governmental regulations about removable storage, so they need to have both models with and without it).
Give it away, give it away, give it away now. Also, you can pry my T430 from my cold dead hands. Yes, the display is horrible and the intel hd4000 graphics is getting old, but it works with geforce now, and with an external monitor and keyboard it makes a usable replacement for a desktop when needed. And just admit that you're jealous of my i5-3230m dual core cpu with it's 4-thread awesomeness that runs any OS pretty much still. And since it weighs 5 pounds I can use it as a weapon in an emergency. I'll probably have this thing until I die, unless I get a better one.
I'm going through the same thing with my Lenovo T420 right now. Even with a 16GB RAM upgrade and 500GB SSD, it's definitely starting to show its age. It can run some games, but Morrowind is about as heavy as it can handle. The 1366x768 screen feels abysmal now that I'm used to 1440p on my desktop, but I feel like the screen upgrade isn't really worth it just because it still won't be able to handle what I'd like it to.
Personally I don't need a new laptop but a giveaway for a community members in need would be cool. Also - what would you recommend for on the go workstation / gaming machine that can drive more demanding games?
I want to buy T14 , is the other laptop better than this on the same price ? I want to use it to install software like Windows server and kali Linux virtually and run labs for cyber security and IT training
I am about to buy a t440p or t14 and am so glad about your comparison. Still can’t say which one. I don’t habe time to play my steam games anyway and I want my kids to play the real old stuff on CD ROM. But I also start a correspondence course, so I need the cam and will work everything online. No need to travel. It’s so hard to decide 😅😢
6:30 2022 thinkpads and onwards (like your T14) have their key travel reduced to 1.5 mm from 1.8mm on older T14's / T490's from 2019-2021. your T440p has 2mm key travel I think.
i like the giveaway idea. there are some people want a laptop since they really need one but had constraint by the budget and because of that they don't care if it's hi-speed or old secondhand laptop
Owning a well cared laptop without a functional crappy trackpad (only good trackpad I’ve used is on a MacBook) sounds sick. Idk heard some guy rambling about potentially giving one away
A giveaway would be nice. My old Lenovo 17.3" laptop died. I am now on a Lenovo 10" tablet typing this. I also have a HP 11" laptop that was given to me. It has a bad switch and can't be shut off, closed, or be put to sleep so was useless to the person that gave it to me. I have a script on it to just shut off the display with a key combo. Being retired and considered disabled I'm not running out to buy anything, damn property taxes bit me this month. Some day...
I'm still on my old W520, it's lightning quick for the stuff I actually need to do on the go and the keyboard is great. It's also ungodly heavy, but luckily that's not a big problem for my purposes. It even games a bit, things like GTA V and Burnout Paradise Remastered are perfectly manageable at 1080p on the 2GB Quadro 2000M. The latter even runs at 60 fps.
Nice video, I share the same opinion about the t440p an the T14. I have a t440p and still using actively, it has the i5 CPU. If I change the i5 CPU for a i7 CPU in the same TDP (37 watts), do I need to change the AC adapter? My t440p has the 65 watts AC adapter. Thanks!!
I have the t440p fully upgraded and i bought it because its durability, easy of repair and cheap parts, after having bad experience with expansive laptops in the past. i do miss the 3k-4k displays because below those resolution im getting pain in my eyes which higher resolution don't do to me. other than that the t440p is perfect even though it's hevier and miss the thunderbolt connector
In all fairness I think Lenovo does not get enough credit for the big jump in display quality since the first gen t14 was first introduced... gone are the old days of dim, low color accuracy displays, can now work on excell, vscode and enjoy netflix on it... all t14 from gen 1 have a beautiful 500 nits 4k display option which is worth every dime imo, rivals a Mac screen but with a massive boost on built quality and ports!
Funny to find this video, was thinking of a similar upgrade, T440p to T14, though probably Gen 1 or Gen 2 as I'm going for something under $400 secondhand. Based on the CPU model number you said (6850U) I guess this is a Gen 3 (might be nice to add that to the title). The 21CF003XUS showing on Geekbench also confirms Gen 3. I should've probably taken the hint when you mentioned the 16:10 screen because I've been seeing 16:9 screens in all the T14 models I've been looking at (though I'd love 16:10, I use 16:10 external displays at my desk). For me I don't care about the weight, I want better temps (my T440p is cooking itself on a regular basis and thermal throttling pretty badly) and a bit better performance, particularly from the iGPU and for playback of modern video files (HEVC, AV1). I'm trying to figure out how much stuff from my T440p I can move over. I took the optical drive out of it and run two 2TB SATA SSDs with the OS on one and the other just for extra storage. It would be nice to at least move the storage one to the new machine even if I have to get a new M.2 drive to put the OS on. The specs on the Lenovo site don't mention anything about SATA. Gonna have to find a teardown to see what all you can connect inside I suppose.
A giveaway could be fun, but I don't really even go anywhere and take mine unless I'm flying (which I haven't done in years). My laptop just stays plugged up all the time. About the only time I ever open it is if I've already put my desktop to sleep and I need to SSH into something before bed.
Hi Logan! Do you have a list of games you like to play on laptop? Looking for something lightweight and offline that I can play on the go. (Also got a T14, coming from a xps and I love this machine).
Hi, I recently discovered your channel. I enjoy watching you talk about the t440p. I purchased mine about 4 years ago used, and I upgraded the (TouchPad)... lol, I know you loath them. Well, I'm not a "tec" guy but was able to change the pad and repair the fingerprint reader, which was not working. My point being I think this is an amazing computer for guys like me who like to fix and tinker with their own stuff. Yeah, I said Tinker, lol. You get it. Anyway, may I have your recommendation for a new screen? I do not game much. I like tetris and old school stuff but I write every day. I saw on one of your videos that it was an option to upgrade to a higher resolution. However, not knowing much about tech, I just need a point and shoot type deal. Tell me which one to get and I can replace it. I'd like to make my flat dullish screen look like yours. 👍 I would be grateful for your help. Possibly a link I can just click to and pick the one I need. I have seen a lot of different choices. I'm just not sure which to choose. Thank you! O and the entire time I've owned this computer the ONLY thing I hate is indeed the TouchPad. When I'm typing my big hands always seem to touch it and before I notice I'm typing in some random paragraph. I hate it. So I'm going with your thoughts here. I'm go to figure out how to shut it off and get a mouse. Any recommendations on that too would be great. Should I get wired or no wire 🤔 thanks and Merry Christmas to ya!!
Giveaway! So many people would appreciate such a thing. I wont be alone in saying ive come to your channel to watch videos old (ancient) and new to get into making old tech good. Started for fun but now out of necessity as things are tough in the UK atm with inflation and wages, and probably the same there too. Whoever wins it is a lucky person as the added value of having watched it on your channel and learn from it is something we cant buy.
Hi, I have the T550 and I think it might be a similar generation as your T440p.Over the many years I have had it, Ive replaced the screen with the 1080p version, the mobo with the nvidia discrete graphics version (had to get an import), upgraded the ram, and installed a sata m.2 into the spare pcie slot. I had upgraded in 2020 to a Samsung Galaxy Flex 15, super sleek, all aluminum, nvme, qled, glass touch pad, touch screen, type c power on left and right of machine. Very expensive. Broke after 1 year of normal use. Turns out the aluminum top uses a plastic frame to attach to the base... Very disappointed. Will never buy samsung again. Now I am back to the T550 which I really had no business moving from except I wanted that type c power, beatiful blacks and lightweight, low power design. Something else to consider. Windows 10 Support will End in Oct 2025. Another thing to consider: My T550 can still run Win7 and is activated in the bios. I think Framework looks attractive but I wish they had 15 inch models. Believe it or not microsoft also makes great laptops.
I got the T14 from work and overall it's a really good laptop with nice performance, battery and display the one and only problem that it has is the thermals, they are awful in my opinion, it constanly get up to 90-100c under medium load i have resorted to just use it without boost most of the time ( performance is enouth ) and only use turbo when i really need it
You Can get a portable disk drive, small and usb driven :) And adapters for sd, vga etc Choose the ryzen version for more performance myself but miss the touch and ofc no Thunderbolt for me
I have the T14 Gen2 and it's just so flimsy.. it's on it's _third_ motherboard. That's fucking pathetic. The battery life is kinda bleh. No SD card slot. And just weird body warping and twisting... At the same time it feels like no modern laptop is really worth it either
I like the Idea of a give away though I'd have to say I'd pass. I have 7 laptops sitting idle that I revived from work and I'm trying to find the right people for. So I'm good.
I dream about this laptop i definetly use linux on him dwm, will be best choice i think. Now i have dilema take t14 for work and gaming 3d becouse vega 10, but i not like touch screen in any laptop. Or bay t440p and upgrade matrice from tn to ips full hd... Used price is not so high, other choice for me is still thinkpad x1 becouse have LTE modem. Then i can have network everywhere. Cheers from Poland.
The T440p was a fantastic laptop for it's time, but I wouldn't recommend purchasing one for more than $150 nowadays, especially if it's not fully upgraded. There are too many tradeoffs compared to modern laptop; The big three being battery life, performance, and weight. One thing the T440p and all ThinkPad laptops have going for them is the fantastic keyboard and the trackpoint. I can understand not wanting to use the touchpad, but why disconnect the trackpoint? It's the best pointing device you can use on a laptop!
I hope that your still thinking about doing the giveaway! I first became interested in the thinkpad by watching your video years ago. While I have not been able to get my hands on the t440p due to financial issues, I would like to have a chance to maybe even owning one. Hopefully you see this and make the giveaway happen.
Go for the giveaway. I would be sure to enter. It would replace my 14 year old laptop with cracked screen. I put tape on the edges so shards of the glass wouldn't fall off it lol but its still chipping away
the idea of a giveaway would be sweet but also there’s no shame in getting some money for a laptop that clearly has functionality and value

Can someone explain to me the appeal of having badly chipped black nail polish??? Either have it on or don't at all,
Personally I don't need a new laptop but a giveaway for a community members in need would be cool. Also - what would you recommend for on the go workstation / gaming machine that can drive more demanding games?
I want to buy T14 , is the other laptop better than this on the same price ? I want to use it to install software like Windows server and kali Linux virtually and run labs for cyber security and IT training
me to! what did you buy?
I am about to buy a t440p or t14 and am so glad about your comparison. Still can’t say which one. I don’t habe time to play my steam games anyway and I want my kids to play the real old stuff on CD ROM. But I also start a correspondence course, so I need the cam and will work everything online. No need to travel. It’s so hard to decide 😅😢
6:30
2022 thinkpads and onwards (like your T14) have their key travel reduced to 1.5 mm from 1.8mm on older T14's / T490's from 2019-2021.
your T440p has 2mm key travel I think.
i like the giveaway idea. there are some people want a laptop since they really need one but had constraint by the budget and because of that they don't care if it's hi-speed or old secondhand laptop
I’d love to be a recipient of that T440p. Retro laptops got attitude
Owning a well cared laptop without a functional crappy trackpad (only good trackpad I’ve used is on a MacBook) sounds sick. Idk heard some guy rambling about potentially giving one away
The IBM t420 was the last with IBM design greatnes
Thanks for the video.
If you are wanting to give the t440p away it will have a great home here.
Yes a give away would be appreciated.
Some day...
Good old T440, reliable, serviceable, strong.
I am planning a T470p soon. Should I get it? i5-7440HQ 2.80GHz 16GB RAM 512GB SSD.
Yes to the Giveaway. That would a sweet gaming laptop for my firstborn.
Btw, the t440p could be lighter, if remove HDD and set an empty case instead the cd-drive, and install SSD nvme, only.
A giveaway or auction for charity would be awesome
X230 + AMD G1 T14 = chillen
I have a T440p fully moved with a dock but I also have a Lenovo Legion 5 Pro with a i9 and rtx4070
Linux and Thinkpads are amazing saved a t440 from ewaste and I am amazed at how capable it is even today
A gift would be good for someone in need, if you can
Excellent idea to do a giveaway, it is a great laptop.
I would like to have a T440.
I got the T14 from work and overall it's a really good laptop with nice performance, battery and display the one and only problem that it has is the thermals, they are awful in my opinion, it constanly get up to 90-100c under medium load i have resorted to just use it without boost most of the time ( performance is enouth ) and only use turbo when i really need it
It really sucks that laptop CPUs are no longer upgradeable and they nearly all have at least some RAM soldered. 😢
What does it mean when ram is soldered?
I still use my t440p fully molded with a dock
Can’t wait for more Japan videos ! Be a great new laptop to go write a book in a little Japanese bar
T4xx series are the best thinkpads ever.
You Can get a portable disk drive, small and usb driven :)
And adapters for sd, vga etc
Choose the ryzen version for more performance myself but miss the touch and ofc no Thunderbolt for me
I have the T14 Gen2 and it's just so flimsy.. it's on it's _third_ motherboard. That's fucking pathetic.
The battery life is kinda bleh. No SD card slot. And just weird body warping and twisting...
At the same time it feels like no modern laptop is really worth it either
I would gladly appreciate give away from Tek Syndicate, cheers.
Very interested in that laptop give away. Might be able to get something better than my e8400 core 2 duo desktop 🤞
150$ for a fully upgraded t440p? Where? And battery life is still fine, for performance, the i7 4810mq is plenty fast even by today's standards
13:52 mouse model?
Give it to me I have a 15+ years old Dell laptop!
I hope that your still thinking about doing the giveaway! I first became interested in the thinkpad by watching your video years ago. While I have not been able to get my hands on the t440p due to financial issues, I would like to have a chance to maybe even owning one. Hopefully you see this and make the giveaway happen.
I would love a give away. I am a huge Thinkpad fan, and would love to try the T440p
Go for the giveaway. I would be sure to enter. It would replace my 14 year old laptop with cracked screen. I put tape on the edges so shards of the glass wouldn't fall off it lol but its still chipping away
Yes!!! Logan!!! Please giveaway your old lenovo laptop to me! I need a backup, plsssssssssssss in Portugal hahha love u brother.
I’d be willing to sign up for a raffle.
I want your old laptop just in case you want to give it away the only thing is I'm located here in the Philippines.
windows 11 do need to be modified for old Lenovo laptop
Do a give away! I would love it! I love tinkering and I am using an old atom processor laptop from about 2017... so do a give away!
I have Lenovo Thinkpad T400 on WIN 10 x64
